PFT: Raiders shopping Michael Huff
ProFootballTalk.com -- The Best Pro Football Scoop on the Internet
Depending on what the Raiders are asking for I think we should make a run for this kid. Huff was the 7th pick in 2006, in his two seasons he has started every game for the Raiders. Huff hasn't been overly productive with only one interception in his two seasons, but I think he has huge potential especially if we pair him up with an elite safety like Landry. IMO Huff would be a significant upgrade over Doughty. Whether we look at Huff or not the safety position needs to be addressed this offseason. |
Re: PFT: Raiders shopping Michael Huff
the skins may upgrade the safety position but i don't think it's as important as the o-line or the d-line. really, i don't think it's even as important as adding another wr,maybe a cb and maybe another lb. i think reed doughty did a fine job and he consistantly got better as the season went on.

Re: PFT: Raiders shopping Michael Huff
I loved this guy at Texas, always around the ball - great athlete. I thought & still think he'll be a good one. However, the point in the article about the raiders spending too much on db's might say it all for us too.
Of course, w/ST & Landry we were paying 2 safeties big $, but both were game changers. If Huff is not on that level then he's not worth that big #7 pick contract, so my guess is we won't try & make any deal here. |
Re: PFT: Raiders shopping Michael Huff
Please find another source. I don't trust PFT for anything. Mainly becasue the amount of rumors they've put out that were way off base makes the chances of this being true minimal. PFT reminds me of those magazines you see at the checkout lines in grocery stores with stories like "Satans face spoted over Capital Building" or "Donald Trumps Gay Affair."
Also Freddyg12 your forgetting that if Huff screws up we can release him without any cap penelty since the Raiders will get charged for the signing bonus. Making us responsible only for his base salary. Yet still, please find another source. |
Re: PFT: Raiders shopping Michael Huff
I would love to bring him in for a late round pick or such, he hasn't been that impressive in Oakland but if we were able to coach him up and make him into a productive starter we could still have a great safety tandem for years.
|
Re: PFT: Raiders shopping Michael Huff
If Oakland is ready to give up on him after 2 seasons I say no thanks
|
Re: PFT: Raiders shopping Michael Huff
every time I seen zorn he speaks about replacing Sean. If this is the case getting Huff would be good for the team. Plus you know raiders would do a redskin friendly trade
|
Re: PFT: Raiders shopping Michael Huff
It would be nice to see Huff in a Redskin jersey but we don't have the cap room for him. He's one of the highest paid safeties in the league. If we were to get him it would probably be for our 2nd round draft pick which we need to keep to build our future. Reed Doughty also deserves a chance prove himself. For the few games he's been in he's shown everyone he's actually pretty decent and might have some potential to develop into a dependable starter like Michael Huff.
|
Re: PFT: Raiders shopping Michael Huff
we can get a upgrade in the 3rd round. not worth it.
|
Re: PFT: Raiders shopping Michael Huff
I say we go with Reed and see how it works out.
|
I say we go with Reed and see how it works out.
I agree with this - we gotta give Reed a chance to prove himself.. He did great playing SS last few games.. However this is very tempting, Huff did not really shine like he was supposed to.. Coming here, could be a good change.. I would not mind if we go after him but only for a round for 2nd day of draft.. |
Re: PFT: Raiders shopping Michael Huff
i thought Doughty played well enough last season to at least have a shot. i say no to Huff.
|
Re: PFT: Raiders shopping Michael Huff
yeah I like Doughty.I think we need to stick with him. Can't afford Huff anyway.Might not be bad to pick up somebody late in the draft though.

And if anyone thinks they are going to get a first round pick (Huff), for a late round pick, you need to change drugs. They are clouding your common sense thinking! This is an unsubstantiated rumor, nothing more. I can't see anything that would make the Raiders WANT to get rid of Huff. |
Re: PFT: Raiders shopping Michael Huff
In 32 games with the Raiders Huff has 165 tackles, 1 pick (last year), 1 sack (last year), and in 06' only 1 pass defended but last year 11.
If he is available he's definately worth a long hard look. Seems like we could coach him up and make him better, look what we did for Doughty! |
Re: PFT: Raiders shopping Michael Huff
why does everyone think we cant afford huff, did anyone say 'we cant afford taylor'?
Taylor was the 5th pick the year before huff was the 7th, so they are probably similar money, if anythign taylor was a little bit more. And the 3rd year of a rookie contract, it cant be that bad. anyone have the figures? and im not saying huff is better than taylor, im speaking purely about the fact that the skins as a team value paying two top safeties |
Re: PFT: Raiders shopping Michael Huff
If Oakland is ready to give up on him after 2 seasons I say no thanks
I am in no way advocating dealing for Huff but I don't think that Oakland's personnel evaluation is exactly "world class." Honestly, I think I'd be more inclined to take a chance on a player discarded by an organization with such a shoddy history of personnel evaluation as opposed to a castoff from a team like the patriots. If the pats let someone go, there's probably something wrong with them or they want way too much money. The raiders are just incompetent. (isn't great to have a team like the Raiders in the league so we can feel better about the skins!) |
Re: PFT: Raiders shopping Michael Huff
I remember him from the Texas v. USC title game, he is definitely a good player but why are they getting rid of him so early? First warning sign, although it is the Raiders. I think we have to ideal safeties right now. Reed seems to me like what they thought Archulata was suppose to be, but without the heavy contract. I think we go with something in another post, get a savvy veteran to use in nickel and dime situations who may also tutor the Landry and Doughty. Just my opinion.

I think Landry proved the only tutor he needed was Taylor and his coaches. He had a great rookie season and if healty I expect: 100+ tackles, 5+ picks, 5+ sacks, 10+ pd, PRO BOWL in 08'. |

Then again, it's Al Davis & he's getting crazier, e.g., writing a resignation letter for his coach. As for the cap hit, I think you're right that all of Huff's bonus would accelerate to the Raiders cap as dead money, but I don't know that we wouldn't take any cap hit by cutting him. If we inherit the contract & he's due a roster bonus, we'd have to pay him or cut him & take the same dead money cap hit. It all depends on his contract & the deal the two teams work out, but to my knowledge I don't think there's much chance that you could acquire Huff w/out having a significant cap impact. |
Re: PFT: Raiders shopping Michael Huff
Oh my god, am I the only one who thinks we need to find a way to take Kenny Phillips with #21? He even looks like ST. It's an omen. He's from Miami, he's the same size, and faster. I think he could be even better. THE U is starting to try to emulate that style of FS, and thats what I'm talking about. LaRon Landry, and Kenny Philips. WTF is wrong with that? Trade next years second round, and maybe a third round just to make it a done deal, and get Roy Williams. WR problems done. Second round take a cb if we must, or whatever. third and later rounds get some DL and OL help. You can draft a GREAT offensive unit in the later rounds. Two GREAT safeties would take some coverage pressure off Smoot, and Rogers. We don't need a CB. WR, and another breaout safety, we'll be set.

Can't argue w/Phillips' talent & he's one of many on the draft wish list, but I would hope that they don't get phillips. IF he's there at #21 it might be too good to pass up. He's the only impact safety in the draft by most rankings, so he's not likely to be there. I think Doughty showed he can play SS & is a good in the box safety. I think a vet. or a late round guy that excels in coverage is needed. I would like to see Prioleau come back too. |
Re: PFT: Raiders shopping Michael Huff
safety is not a huge priority.
DE, WR, OL, & CB are our hig priority targets. I thought we all knew that. Taking anything ther than those positions in the 1st round would be counter productive. |

First of all (this is something I believe I need to emphasize on), nobody and I mean NOBODY could ever be better than Sean Taylor.. He was one of a kind, a size of LB and speed of CB.. All WRs including TO and Randy Moss were afraid of Sean.. Second, I just watched Kenny Phillips' highlights.. He looks good, I have to admit.. But to tell you truth, I would prefer if we go after Brandon Flowers.. He really impressed me.. But I would not mind if we go after Phillips too, only if Flowers is taken before us.. Third, Rogers won't be ready until maybe middle of Sept - depends on his recover progressing. So, unless we sign a nickel back through free agency, we need to draft a CB.. Especially when Springs might not be back for 2009 season.. For those people who wants to see Kenny Phillips' highlights or Brandon Flowers'.. They compare him to both Sean Taylor and Ed Reed. They say he has the awareness, hitting ability and size of Taylor, and the quickness and coverage skills of Reed. Dynamite player. I never said he WAS better than ST, I'm just saying he might be something close, or even as good. Maybe coached to be a little better. |
Re: PFT: Raiders shopping Michael Huff
Also, after Sweed re-inventing himself at the Combine, I'm not too sold on Campbell. We should go after Sweed if Vinny has something to do with it. He's young, and I'm sure that wrist is fine. He ran super at the combine. He got moved up from early second round, to middle first. Limas Sweed baby!

He put up decent numbers and played the pass much better last year. Landry looked better at Free so not sure if Huff is a good fit at strong for us. He seems to not have a physical presence needed for strong according to the Raiders. Doughty solid against the run last year. We would have to give up too much here lets pass! |

Let's take a look at the Safeties we currently have on our roster: LaRon Landry- We all know this kid is going to be good for years to come. After Landry the talent drastically drops.... Reed Doughty- Showed some promise last year, but I am not sold on him being a starter. I think Doughty is more suited for a backup role. Vernon Fox- Career special teams player. Decent backup safety. Pierson Prioleau- Free Agent that will probably follow GW to Jacksonville. Omar Stoutmire- Free Agent who is 33 years old, and likely to be gone. So if Prioleau, and Stoutmire depart that leaves us with 3 safeties two of whom (Doughty,Fox) probably are not starting caliber safeties in this leauge. Even if Doughty was able to prove himself and start this year we would still need to add at least one more safety for depth. So I think either way you look at it we need to address the safety position. |

All of our starters are over 30 and we'll likely need 2 new starters within the next year or so. The D-line is also an issue, with Daniels getting into his mid-30s and Griffin on the decline. We also have needs at WR, LB and CB. I'd love a nice new safety, but we have needs at other positions of greater importance. |

I never said that Safety is our greatest need of importance, but I do think it's a pretty big need that will need to addressed. After FA we're going to be carrying 3 safeties one of whom (Fox) is a career special teamer, and Doughty is unproven as a full time starter. This reminds me of last year, before we drafted Landry, when everyone thought Pierson Prioleau was the answer at SS, and I think we all know how that would've turned out. I see the same thing with Doughty, he's a good backup nothing more. I do agree with you that O-line/D-line should be our top priorites this offseason, but after that I think we really need to look at the Safety/CB positions. |

Yeah, but I think we should draft ol and dl in later rounds if Phillips falls to us magically like I think he is. Forget OL and DL in the first round. You know... 80 percent of the Hogs were undrafted? You can build an offensive and defensive line in 2 years with the later rounds of the draft. If Phillips is available, take him. It'd be almost too omniscent with the #21 pick. "PICK PHILLIPS" is coming from up above. Jesus Christ, they say Joe Jacoby is the best offensive lineman EVER to be signed as an undrafted rookie. Look at our de's. Andre Carter is a little better than mediocre. He had 10 or 10 1/2 sacks. He's getting better, and eventhough Philip Daniels is old, he is a good run stopper. I don't see anything but DEPTH that we need at those positions. OL is a different story. I see us using 2nd and 3rd for OL help. I think I make a valid point though. Unless you are ZERO at depth for a position, you don't draft for depth in the first round. lol... IMPACT players come with the first pick. Basically.. I think.... #21 - Either (if either one is still available) Kenny Phillips, or Brandon Flowers. Later rounds... 2nd-OL/OG 3rd-WR/CB 5th-P/K 6th-ol/og depth 7th-ol/og depth CB- CB is an issue, but like I said, with two blistering safeties, I think that would lighten coverages. You wont see many teams going deep as often with LL and KP back there. Either way, Phillips or Flowers are golden. WR- I think Anthony Mix is going to be our new Red Zone threat, so we REALLY DON'T need a WR in the draft. Period. We have WAY too much money tied up on Brandon Lloyd. Reche, Santana, Randle El, Mix. If he doesn't retire, Keenan for real vet leadership. Linebackers.... H.B. Blades is good. Damn good. Give him time to develop. Whenever Rocky comes back, it won't be like he never left, it's going to take time for him to make his full recovery... (if it ever happens). Fletcher has 2 years left. We have decent players on the defensive side, but I agree we need a playmaker closer to the ball. Andre is good. Depth at isn't as crucial as all these other needs. You can go after DL in FA. |

what are you people talking aboug "we can't afford him" ??????? WE ALWAYS have salary cap issues and we ALWAYS get over them.. every year.. we are under the cap and will be 20mil under the cap after brunell adn a few others are cut and such.. We may not b the smartest with what we do with our money but we are MASTERS at managing our cap. We can sign any player we want, but it seems that Dan is refraining from having to be the highest bidder... IT looks like they will make a decent offer and if it's turned down, then on they go.. But really, I dont understand why people are always talking about "we are in cap trouble" and al ltaht crap... Let me ask you this... Did you just start bein a redskins fan? because as long as I can remember for the past 10 years we've always been in 'cap hell' but somehow always find a way to sign whoeer we want.... THINK BEFORE YOU POST hahaah |
