Takeo Spikes -- Should we?

Hey Guys,

Takeo Spikes got released earlier and I think he's an interesting name for us. With the questions surrounding rocky and Washington, I think he might be worth a contract to be solid depth / linebacker if Rocky/Washington can't come back on time/get injured.

I know he's a bit older, but he still has some gas in the tank, and as of this moment Im not horribly confident in our linebacking corps.

I don't see why we shouldn't go after him but you know what 45% of the people on this thread are gonna say.

Re: Takeo Spikes -- Should we?

Like anything else, depends on the price. For a reasonable amount, I wouldn't have a problem with it as short term insurance.

Re: Takeo Spikes -- Should we?

Im all for it, assuming hes not looking for anything big. Guys a beast and can still play. Not what he used to be. we have some young guys at backup, but washington is getting older and more fragile, mcintosh is coming off surguy, and fletcher is old (even though he hastn had a problem yet, and I hope he doesnt). this could be a great depth move

What'chu talkin' 'bout no Tatino Spikes?!?!?!

Ok, I should explain that: back when I was in college there was a brief time that Spikes (while with the bengals) tried to start up a rivalry with Ray Lewis, who was in his prime. Spikes said something like Lewis was overrated and that he was better and when a reporter told Lewis this his response was What'chu talkin' 'bout no Tatino Spikes?!?!?!. For some reason it killed me, and to this day I say it everytime I hear the man's name.
For that reason, plus the fact that he's older (but he'd probably be a good backup), I don't want him anywhere near the Skins.

Re: Takeo Spikes -- Should we?

now is the time to sign somebody given the injuries to rocky we need someone to play with fletcher and marcus, off course we could negotiate so that his price will not sky high, but this guy has still some years left playing at high level.

Re: Takeo Spikes -- Should we?

I think Mr. Spikes would be a good pick up as he has run the defense we ran don,t know how different it will be this year. Just think about Flecher same questions and he is stud....of course depends on the price! I can't believe the Skins are now considered to be frugal!!! Great! Keep this up and there wont be very many things on this message board to talk grip about as they have in the past!

solid depth of course would be nice and he is that. but I am going to take the opportunity to be the first person in this thread to say:

"no thanks"

now, all 300 others who are going to say it, let it be known i was first. mwahahahaha.

All depends on price, he can play we know that but how much does he want?

Re: Takeo Spikes -- Should we?

I'd love to bring this guy in for depth or as a potential starter if Rocky or Marcus can't go at the start of the season. I can't imagine he'd ask too much (age and just getting cut), and he's a solid locker room guy.

Of course.

He doesn't have the speed to play OLB in my opinion. He's been an MLB his entire career, and he's become very injury prone the past few years. Fletcher will be solid at MLB for us for another 2 seasons or so I would imagine, and in the meantime HB Blades will continue to develop as his eventual replacement. Chances are someone will be interested in Spikes as a starter. I doubt he comes here to play out of position as a reserve.

Re: Takeo Spikes -- Should we?

if the guy could still play, he would still be in Philly. their linebackers are a mess. and spikes didnt make alot of money. i say thanks, but no thanks. only a shell of the former all star

He made pretty good money considering age/injury issues. They saved $5M off this year's cap by cutting him today.

Do you think Blades will get a look at outside due to our thin depth at this point? Spikes could be a reserve for us.

We are probably going to lose (he aleady is a UFA) Godfrey. I don't see any reason why Spikes can't just step into his spot for a reasonable price.

Re: Takeo Spikes -- Should we?

I'd take Colvin over Spikes (though neither may even stay healthy enough to last past the first month)

Re: Takeo Spikes -- Should we?

We dont need an injuried guy over 30 with a big name to ride the bench behind a starter over 30.
If we're gunna pick up depth at MLB...it should be with youth.
If we're gunna pick up a short term starter at OLB...then we should look elsewhere.
I dont see Spikes as an OLB at this point

Blades did play some outside last year when Rocky got hurt. He can play OLB, but I think he's better suited as a MLB. Apparently Rocky's rehab is going very well, but we'll need some depth, especially with Godfrey most likely going to another team or back into retirement. I'm very wary of Spikes though.

In case anyone is curious, some other FA LB's still on the market, in order of their perceived value by Sporting News (I didn't include Karlos Dansby b/c he's been franchised):

Michael Boley, Falcons, (Restricted) Age: 25, 6-3, 236lbs

Clark Haggans, Pitt, Age: 31, 6-4, 243lbs

Landon Johnson, Cincy, Age: 26, 6-2, 232lbs

Boss Bailey, Det, Age: 28, 6-3, 235lbs

Brandon Chillar, St. Louis, Age: 25, 6-3, 242lbs

Victor Hobson, NYJ, Age: 28, 6-0, 252

Scratch Boss Bailey off that list. He's going to Denver.

Chillar might be headed to the Packers

I heard the Broncos were considering Bailey, never heard that it was official. Haggans is 31, but he could be interesting. He had a few huge games for Pitt last year, and he plays OLB, albeit in a 3-4.

Re: Takeo Spikes -- Should we?

ESPN says that Spikes played WLB, so I guess he could come as insurance policy for Rocky, if the price is right. Although with the team conservative approach to free agency, who knows. I'd like to throw out a name for the team to consider during the draft given that we're talking about LBs....Erin Henderson.

I mean, look at that neck. It actually has to taper back down into his shoulders.

Re: Takeo Spikes -- Should we?

We need depth, not a starter. Takeo is a starter and probably wouldn't accecpt a backup role or a small contract. Cincinnati has a bigger need than we do for a LB. I see that as a better all around situation for him.

I think Haggans is the best guy available.

Anyone know the extent of Spikes & Colvin's injuries? I know Spikes had shoulder surgery last year, but is it expected to be a slow recovery?

Both of these guys may have a couple of good years left.

That was back when Cincy really sucked. They just had a bad season last year because they had alot of injuries on defense.

Hell yes we should take him! The man logged in 139 tackles last year for the eagles! He also played along side Fletcher! With those 2 and Washington or Rocky. We have solid backups to fill in too. Blades is young and could use the veteran mentorship. He is also a kick butt defender and speedy.

I say we take him.

Has anyone heard anything about Lemar Marshall? according to redskins.com he a an available UFA. He spent several seasons with the Skins and has worked extensively with Blache. He could provide the depth we need at an affordable price.

now Lamar Marshall is someone i would be interested in bringing in. knows the system, and wouldn't command an outrageous salary
