Landry is at it again
 

For those of you who are interested, Laron Landry was supposed to be at the Collector's Showcase in Chantilly today. He did his normal blow of the fans thing.

Please, someone correct me if I am wrong, but I believe he is 2 for 8 on these things now.:benched:

I don't collect the current players. They are to expensive and alot of times in just a couple of years, they are pretty much worthless (Heath, Westbrook etc).

I just can't believe the stores and other places are still booking him. He is actually scheduled to do another appearance in Virginia Beach in a few weeks... they same people he has stood up several times. I just can't believe they are trying it again.

I was visiting DC for a weekend earlier this Christmas break and I was randomly walking around in Tyson's Coner mall and saw him at Gordon Bierch. I got his autograph on my Redskins hat, which I wear all the time here in Florida. I guess i'm just lucky though because I also saw Cooley and Smoot that week. :)

The thing that I wonder about this is how honnest the organizers are being . It may be they are booking him in good faith and doing everything right but he is just being an ass, OR there is a problem with the booking company in that they are not providing what is promised or not paying what is promised which and there is a genunie beef going on and rather than be adults about it and discuss the situation privatly they go running to the fans post anonomously on a message board bad mouthing the players character .

There is a reason that most players avoid these public signing events and I am sure it isn't due to a general disrespect for the fans ...

Actually, most players do these events.. at least a majority of the one's with names.

I would agree with your post if it were not that Landry has done this to multiple places on multiple occassions. I believe Tidewater Sports several times, PS Game Gear twice, Collector's Showcase twice. I also think there is one other place. Of course, these stores/promoters bear some responsibility at this point, since Landry has a history of doing this, why do they keep booking him? I believe he has only shown up twice, both times to PS Game Gear.... after blowing of the original schedule without letting them know ahead of time.

You are right, of course, and some of the comments - especially the characteristically banal ES thread - just don't make sense to me. I don't know how much you want to blame the promoters here. I've dealt with PSGameGear and they are good people and a whole bunch of players have signed there (Cooley, Monk, Portis, Sean Taylor, etc etc). CSA is tops among autograph shows and the list of guys who have signed there is longer than you can mention. They are acting rationally (to a point) since Landry is a draw and the point for them is to make money. If Landry doesn't want to sign then he should just stop signing on to these things, or tell his people to stop signing him on. He doesn't need the money (though it would seem like a pretty easy gig; sign your name for 250 people at $35 per and that is $9000 in a fairly short period of time and you probably end up with a nice portion of that but whatever, he doesn't need it) so if you don't want to do it don't say you will.

I've never tried to get a Landry autograph, but if I had I would be pretty upset. He certainly doesn't owe it to anyone to show up and sign autographs, but if you say you are going to do a signing and sign on to do so, allow the business to promote the signing and then just don't show up, that is pretty indefensible. Once would be one thing, but this is more than five times. I find it hard to believe that he had really legitimate reasons for blowing off events that he knew about months in advance on so many occasions.

It's really simple calculus. He is wrong for doing that, just as it would be wrong if anyone of us made multiple commitments and then failed to follow through. I don't know why anyone would bother defending that sort of action. He's a good player, and I don't really care if he signs or not, but don't say you will and then not follow through. It is disrespectful to the fans and its not like he is doing these signings out of charity, there is serious money involved.

It's not really my thing but it means a lot to a lot of people, especially kids. When I was a kid I used to love going with my brother and dad to Woodward and Lothrop's and getting autographs from guys like Mosely, Theismann, Riggins, Joe Washington. As I've gotten older and because of the work I do, I prefer a handshake and a few minutes of conversation.

But LaRon hasn't shown to be reliable anywhere but on the field. Ultimately, I suppose that's all that should matter.

First of all when you are getting an autograph, it isn't about just getting them sign something, you actually get to talk to the players and ask them questions and what not. Yesterday at that show was a great experience! Pat Fischer, Ron McDole, Mike Nelms, Mark May, George Starke, and Bill Brundige couldn't have been nicer! I talked to them asked them questions about games and football and they were really affable. Pat Fischer and McDole were really funny. Fischer was talking trash to this guy in a Riggins jersey saying he would take him down right here and right now. Fischer was kidding me about signing his autograph. He said to me, how do you spell Theismann? He was funny, McDole was funny as well. Mike Nelms let put on his Super Bowl Ring and he was kidding me about trying to take his ring out of the building. Mark May was cool, he and I talked about Notre Dame football and what he thought the chances of getting above .500. Basically, the overall message here is that it isn't about just getting a signature, but it is an opportunity to talk to the players you respect. If people don't like getting autographs, then you don't have to bother. Laron, if you don't like money from the fans and making them angry that you don't show, then don't bother signing the contract. I wouldn't get a modern player's signature because I would be afraid that they wouldn't be here that long. I do think that Laron should man up and follow through on his obligations. He is starting his career out here very similar to how Sean Taylor did.

Respectfully, I disagree. I'm in the same boat you are as far as autographs are concerned. I could care less if I have the dude's name written on piece of paper or photograph - like you I'd rather a handshake and conversation. But this shows his arrogance and lack of humility. I know he's still young, and hopefully he'll learn to respect and appreciate the fans as time goes on.

I'll say that his on-field reliability IS all that matters to the Redskins as far as wins and losses. But it's not all that SHOULD matter. Missing an autograph event(s) isn't against the law or against team or league rules. But it lets down fans, most of whom are little kids. It's a shame that guys have the arrogance to think they are too good for the rabid fan base that ultimately helps them get so rich in the first place. Maybe his absurd athletic ability outweighed his iffy "character" when Gibbs was evaluating him.

Don't get me wrong, I'm THRILLED Landry is a Redskin. I just hope he gets his head out of the clouds.

All I was trying to get at was would we rather have a hard-hitting, flying free safety who helps us win games on the field but continuously breaks commitments to fans and the media (and in turn the fans again), or a malcontent WR that doesn't take the field but writes cool training camp blogs? I mean if we have to sacrifice something about Landry, I'd rather it be this.

But you're right though, he certainly should have a bit more respect for the fans. And for me, I think respect could be as simple as just saying "You know what, this isn't my thing. I don't feel comfortable with it so don't ask me to do these" I think people would rather hear that than "Yeah, yeah sure I'll be there....Oh, sorry. Something came up"

Well put. As long as his transgressions don't go beyond missing autograph signings, I'm fine. But you're right, he should come out say it's not his thing rather than commit and no-show.

I'll tell you one thing that I'll never ever forget about ST. I go out to Ashburn every training camp. Only about a 20 min drive from my house. ST dissed the reporters but he'd sit there after practice and sign every single autograph request. He'd sit there and sign and take pictures with the fans and the kids it seemed for hours. Not a side many people got to see but I'll never forget it. Landry may or may not do this but remember he is just a kid himself. Let him grow up a little and I think in time he'll come around.

Here's what I don't get. The attitude that "I don't collect autographs, ergo everyone that collects autographs is incomprehensible to me." The point that everyone has made here, is just that if you don't want to sign then don't say you will. If you make a commitment then follow through. That is not really a difficult concept, I think its just being a decent person. Clearly no one is saying, Landry didn't show to the signing he should get cut, the point is just that if you make a commitment in life you should follow through.

I also don't think that getting an autograph on a piece of paper or photograph makes a whole lot of sense, but getting some equipment signed (i.e. authentic jersey or Proline helmet) makes a great display and conversation piece. I wouldn't think that would be such an odd thing for a sports fan to understand. For instance, I love my Chris Cooley Proline Revolution helmet and I bet if I were to offer it to you you wouldn't mind having it either ... come on. I was really joking about men getting other men's autographs. Its really quite normal for another guy to follow another guy around until he signs his name to something. I was at Bass Proshop in December and there sat Mosley so I walked up and got his autograph for my kid of course. I did not have to wait in line so that does not qualify as a wierd thing to do. Now if I waited in line for over five minutes thats when it starts getting wierd.

LOL!!!! I agree it is weird. I determined this at a young age. My best friend's dad was big into baseball cards and autographs. So we go to this show one day and he is like saying "Hi Mr. Elway" or "Mr. Boggs" ETC...

So I am thinking my buddies dad is 45 years old and these guys are a bunch of kids (at the time), seems weird he is calling them Mr.

I like sports and root for my team and their players but I have never been awe struck to want anything from them other then WINS!

I with you 100%. Landry SHOULD NOT blow off the fans. But as I said he's just a kid himself and I'm sure it's something he'll regret when he's older. I'm not making excuses for him but how old is the guy 23 or 24? He's probably enjoying his 1st off season as a pro, he's got $ in his pocket and the last thing he probably wants to do is sign autographs.

That's a nice helmet and it you'd offer it to me I'd take it in a hearbeat. Would I pay $100 for it? No. I have a ton of Skins stuff that isn't signed. My favorite is an old Sonny Jurgenson picture of him in the pocket throwing a pass. It just a great photo but I've never felt the need to go and try to get him to sign it. I understand why people like signitures on jersey's, pics and so on but it's just not my thing.

I was at the show, didn't try to get LaRon because I'd rather spend money on players that have accomplished something (for instance Hall of Famers Wes Unseld and Elvin Hayes were $15 less than Landry, Earnest Byner and Monte Coleman were half his price)

It was funny, as I was leaving, I commented to my girlfriend that there was actually another young guy there that dragged his girlfriend there (as opposed to the average 300 pound card dealer with a zubaz hat and fupa) and it turned out to be Chris Cooley and his hot girlfriend/wife/whatever she is just walking around checking out all the booths.

Well over the past 10 years or so autographs have been easier to get than wins. So did that guys dad talk about how cool it was to get the person autograph and just go on and on about untill it kind of got scarry.

It doesn't look very good, but unless your one of the ones who waited for him then i am guessing your not going to be bothered by it. Pesronally I can't figure out why anyone would pay for Laron landry's autograph anyway...shouldn't he accomplish something before there is a market for his autograph?

I went to the first PSGameGear signing with laron. Unlike some of you guys I think it is cool to have a helmet signed by a player. I have a Sammy Baugh auto'd helmet that will be around much longer than he is unfortunately. It is a link to the heroes of the past even after they are long gone. Any way Laron didn't show and basically wasted a day of mine as I traveled a considerable amount of time and stood in line only to stand in line more so i could return the prepaid autograph tickets when he did not show. I just wanted a personalized helmet for my brother's 30th b-day since Laron is # 30. I wanted "the dirty 30" on it. But he stood me and a bunch of other fans up who are not fat collector types. Anyway like everyone else has said don't sign up for this shit if you are not going to show up Laron. Laron was quickly becoming my favorite Redskin and now I think he is a pompous asshole because of his inability to show up to be paid thousands of dollars for 2 hours of work with the fans.

Well if a person gets paid to sign stuff is he really doing it for the fans in the first place? Thats what I don't get about this signing stuff. He gets paid to sign your stuff, the person who sells the tickets makes money doing this stuff and the fan feels like the player did them a favor by sign something for them.

My guess is chances are good he will show at Patrick Henry Mall on April 5th. Reason is that his brother is suppose to appear as well. Supposedly those who bought tickets for
Landry's last no show here will get a private and informal session.
