Using a high pick on QB.
I heard that during the combine Cerrato interviewed QB Joe Flacco and some other DEs and DTs.
It hasn't been talked about much on Warpath but what do you think the feasibility is of drafting a young QB early this year to develop under our QB groomer, Zorn, and having a failsafe if Campbell can't make the throws that are necessary in the West Coast Offense? I'm not totally against it and understand the concern if that is done this year. Just for the measure, I am a Campbell fan. |
Re: Using a high pick on QB.
I think we'll use a 2nd day pick on a QB. I think Cerrato has already mentioned this as a likely possibility.
|
Re: Using a high pick on QB.
I was thinking along the lines of our 5th round pick in that neighbor hood if they decide to use this draft to address QB needs. But this could change if the best player available happens to be a QB in an earlier round, IMO.
|
Re: Using a high pick on QB.
I' all for it because I do not believe that Campbell is the right fit for our offense but I could be wrong. I think Campbell is very talented just not for what are about to do on offense.
|
Re: Using a high pick on QB.
Good question. I think the possibility has been discussed about a late round draft pick, but a 2nd or 3rd round pick on a Qb? I wouldn't be against it. Sometimes you want to take the best overall player and it might be a qb. While i don't think we'll use a 2nd, you never know.

Well he won't all that last year in AS system so if he does not fit into a WC system whats left? |
Re: Using a high pick on QB.
Check the tape of the Skins-Lions game last year. We ran a quick hitting style of passing game that to me could have passed for a WCO scheme and JC had the best game of his career. I don't know why some people are so convinced that he can't run this offense before even seeing him on the field. Give him a chance.
|
Re: Using a high pick on QB.
If the right guy were there in the 3rd round it would be worth it, but I can't see going any higher than that. remember mcnabb's reaction when philly used a 2nd rounder last year on a qb? It wouldn't be good for JC.
Arguably you could say the same about a 3rd round pick, since it's still a high percentage pick, but I think if the guy that's there is better value than anyone else on the board, you have to consider it. I figure it will come down to how many picks we have. If we get the comp. picks there's a chance to draft a qb earlier in the 2nd day. If we can get someone to trade down with & acquire picks, I could definitely see Vinny using a 3rd or 4th (if we got one). |
Re: Using a high pick on QB.
VC has identified QB as a possibility, just where in the draft one will be selected is yet to be determined.
We still have Sam Hollenbach on the roster, and Z-man might want to see where he fits in, if at all. He has not had much of an opportunity here mainly because of the competition ahead of him. A developmental QB will in all probability be selected somewhere between 4 & 7. |

good point, I would also say the first dallas game as I recall had a lot of such plays & JC had a great game till the int. at the end. |

Campbells senior year, Auburn ran a variation of the west coast offense. and Campbell enjoyed his finest season as a college starter. i expect him to have a breakout year |

You must remember that the hiring of Jim Zorn as OC was with JC in mind. I don't think he would have been so willing to take on the challenge of working with Campbell if he didn't feel he was capable of doing what he want's to get done. The safe approach here is to let the situation play it'self out before we begin to make any type of predictions as to success or failure. |

We're all going to kick back and watch the fireworks when September comes around but do you think our QB situation warrants a selection of a QB early? |
Re: Using a high pick on QB.
We have too many other needs, drafting what would amount to a #3 QB with one of our top 3 picks would be dumb IMO.

We're all going to kick back and watch the fireworks when September comes around but do you think our QB situation warrants a selection of a QB early?[/QUOTE] TBH, I think we have more pressing needs at other positions that need to be addressed immediately, more so than QB. We're talking about a 3rd QB here, one that's not likely to see action for a long while, if at all, considering JC is our projected future. Any QB selected at whatever round in the draft we decide to do so, will be a project, simular to last years selection of Jordan Palmer. If we're drafting for need, then both O & D lines, CB, S, and WR should be our first priorities, not saying QB is not important, but not in the first three rounds. |
Re: Using a high pick on QB.
IMO the folks saying JC 'won't fit' with Zorn's offense either don't have a very sophisticated understanding of football or have not spent much time watching Campbell play on tape - or both. I also agree that given the Redskins needs it wouldn't make sense to take a QB until the 4th or 5th round at the earliest. That being said, QBs are currency in the NFL and it isn't always a bad thing to get a guy, if only to trade him down the road (Schaub, Rob Johnson, even Sage Rosenfels - who the Skins drafted in the 4th round years ago - was drawing trade interest this offseason).
|
Re: Using a high pick on QB.
I wouldn't pick one any higher than the 4th round. In a perfect world, we draft a QB in the 6th or so, JC burns up the league, draftee plays a few snaps looks good and we trade him for high picks.
If you HAVE a good QB, investing low round draft picks in back-ups can turn out quite lucrative (e.g. Brett Farve -Mark Brunnell, Matt Hassleback, more recently Matt Shaub) |

I agree for the most part unless the best player happens to be a QB and falls in our lap in the 3rd or so, then who knows? Don't forget we have no 4th that goes to Denver for the last installment for the Duckett trade. But hopefully we will have the comp. 3rd round pick which will make two 3rd round picks and also the two 7th round comp. picks. |
Re: Using a high pick on QB.
I agree we have too many other pressing needs to be taking a QB in the first 3 rounds.I figure we'll probably take one in 5th or 6th rd.I would be stoked if Colt Brennan is there but would be happy with Kevin O'Connell,Bernard Morris or maybe Matt Flynn.

Re: Using a high pick on QB.
I would not be surprised at all to see the Skins draft a QB. I am not convinced that Zorn & Co. really believe that JC will end up being their QB.

Based on what exactly? |
Re: Using a high pick on QB.
They were speaking with Xavier Lee the other day apparently
|
Re: Using a high pick on QB.
I don't see it happening. I think we are trying to structure our offense around JC the correct way now. I'm sure the proper amount of research was done before they even hired Zorn to determine if him and JC could coexist. Drafting a QB in any round before the 6-7th, wouldn't be a wise move on our part. The only way I could see it happening, is if someone really good (Haven't seen one yet this year) fell to the later rounds.

Re: Using a high pick on QB.
Anyone think that Campbell is a little on the delicate side?
His knee dislocation at the Bears game aside. He went out for a snap or two earlier in that game and seems to go out a lot when he gets a minor rattling. I feel for that reason looking into a QB isn't the worst of ideas, especially if we have Zorn teach this guy and get the early learning out of the way. Let me reiterate, I'm a Campbell fan. |

Which one.... For me the proof was in many games but the one that stands out loud and very clear was 2006 last game in DC and of our season (the almost new years eve game 12/30/06) against the giants. He all but got killed out there and you could not keep the young man off the field. One shot he took we thought he was going off the field in a cart straight to the hospital, next thing you know JC is right back out there moving the ball.....west coast style. We came so close to winning that game it was unreal. The giants went on to a wild card with an 8-8 record. |

If I recall correctly he took a good shot to his elbow or arm and didn't have much feeling in it for a few minutes. Other than that when else has he come out of a game? |

Re: Using a high pick on QB.
Collins didn't take any snaps until the Chicago game, so JC couldn't have missed any time before that.

This system is similar if not identical to the system he played in his last year at Auburn. I read it in an article recently, but hell, I have read alot of stuff recently. If I can come across the link again I will post it for you. |

Based on a lot of the same stuff I noticed with Gibbs & Ramsey. Zorn & Co. have talked him up a good bit and stressed that he is the starting QB. IMO, if they gotta stress that they are either trying to convince themselves or us. We wont know for sure until they start playing but this is JC's last chance, if he doesnt do it now he wont be the starter next year. |
Re: Using a high pick on QB.
You hit it Mattyk72.When we played the Lions,Al and the gang called short plays (slants, curls, etc.)to exploit the lack of speed in the middle of the Lions defense.Jason looked great, mostly because Moss,Cooley,ARE can produce after the catch.I think the reason that they havent gone after a WR in free agency is because they are strong there. They need a tall strong receiver to block and be a threat inside the 20.Cambell will have a breakout year.Look at his stats his senior year.Dont forget that Portis was a star in this style for Denver, and to get pressure off the QB(blocking, dump offs, and draws)is where hes one of the best. The only problem i see,is health of the line.

Zorn simply named him the starter to squash any talk of a potential QB controversey coming off of Collins' playoff run. Not sure what's wrong with that and I don't think it should be read into much further than that. What does JC have to do this year in your opinion? Personally I think the Skins will be much more patient with him than some fans seem to think. |
Re: Using a high pick on QB.
JC played very well in the WC offense in college. Why the assumptions that he will fail? If he struggles at first it is because he is still adjusting to the NFL game, not because the WC offense does not suit him. JC is a good athlete and with time he will do well.
I have not seen Joe Flacco play in a real game, but sounds like the hype is getting larger than life. Has anybody seen him play in college? Is he a gamer or is a work out freak that has a strong arm and all the numbers (height, weight, speed)? Mr Cerrato, I do not want a good practice and work out player. I want a FOOTBALL player that proves it on the field not a work out freak. At this time of year some people (I am being nice by calling them people) look at the combine numbers and get excited. But the numbers never tell the whole story, remember guys like Mike Mamula that elevated themselves high in the draft because of an off the chart work out at the combine. Recently in 2005, Matt Jones from Arkansas blew everyone away at the combine 6'6' 230 pounds and ran a 4.3 in the 40. In three years he has five starts, with 101 catches. Smells like a bust. You can not measure the intangibles. |

By that I mean become much more accurate on short & mid range passes. I also think he needs to become much faster in his tempo and decision making and stop throwing those bad interceptions that lose games. As for his buggy whip delivery, hopefully Zorn & Co will try improve his mechanics. JC has a lot of room to improve. Actually I think the Skins have been immensely patient with JC. They spent 3 picks on this guy and now 4 years down the road he is still barely developed beyond a rookie. IMO you just dont spend 3 picks on a project. |
Re: Using a high pick on QB.
Barely developed? I dunno, I just don't see it. I thought he played very well in the 2nd half of the year and showed signs that he was close to turning the corner.
Of course he has room to improve but I don't think he's so far off that this season is a make or break year for him. |
Re: Using a high pick on QB.
The Redskins have a lot of needs but I don't think quarterback is high on that list. A third string quarterback, that most likely will not see the playing field this year, should not warrant a high draft pick. The Skins need a corner back, safety, wide receiver, offensive and defensive line depth. I would address all those needs first. With their long list of needs and draft position, the Skins will be in a position to draft the best player available.

These are new coaches that didnt draft JC and IMO that makes a huge difference (much like Gibbs didnt draft PR, I really think it made a difference to Gibbs). JC is not terrible by any means but he is nowhere close to being worth the 3 draft picks the Skins gave up for him 4 years ago. That said I dont think the Skins are in "need a QB" mode yet but by the end of the season we will know. |
Re: Using a high pick on QB.
We have 2 QB's that could start on this team,we don't need another. Here is a list of positions we need:CB,OL,DE,DT,WR,LB,S,P in that order.
