Post your cold remedies
So of course there's no cure or quick fix to the common cold.
But right now, I have the worse head cold and being that I go to school full time and work part time, I don't really have any downtime. That being said, I've caught a cold, its not terrible but its enough to make me wanna say eff it, and just not go to class or work. And for someone who hasn't missed a day of work in almost 2 years, its out of my character to feel this way. So I figured, there are a lot of people here who come from different walks of life... Why not post what you do when you catch a cold/flu? If people post some good stuff, I'll try it out and also I figured it's helpful for anyone else who might be/get sick in the future. :) |

I'm old school (tea with honey and lemon...chased with a shot of rum)
I miss canthetuna, that was a great name (plus your explanation for how you got it was priceless)...I like the new name though |
Re: Post your cold remedies
Hot showers and humidifiers. When I get a cold I take 4 or 5 hot showers throughout the day and sleep with the humidifier next to me. I drink a ton of hot chocolate and eat saltine crackers. I rarely take any medicine unless my congestion is really bad, then I take some generic sudafed stuff.

Personally, I prefer a shot of Jameson, but I'm sure 151 would work fine for killing whatever is living in your throat. Also, thera flu is the most disgusting thing in the world but it does a pretty good job of lessening your symptoms. |
Re: Post your cold remedies
A shot of so-co and lime will clear me up pretty quick...it only lasts about 10 mintues before I feel like hell again, but after 3-4, I feel pretty good.

I miss canthetuna, that was a great name (plus your explanation for how you got it was priceless)...I like the new name though
thanks, I debated changing it since parcell's retirement, and since ST passed, I thought I'd pay tribute. Been thinking about it for a while now and thought it may be time... It is really weird, though to change it. |
Re: Post your cold remedies
if i get the flu I sit in bed and sedate myself until I feel better upon awakening (or at least try to) If I get a head cold or something I try to take cold eze early on and maybe some tylenol sinus occasionally.
|
Re: Post your cold remedies
I believe in being very proactive with things like this. The second I feel strange, I start cranking the airborne and halls vitamin C drops (they have 100% daily vit C and taste great!). If it gets much worse from that, I try to take extra time to sleep and get charged up. I figure spending time immediately will save me twice the time if I get full blown sick.
If it's already hit -- drink lots of fluids. Teas and water seem to be the best, flush it out of your system -- and Nyquil / booze to make sure you sleep well. |
Re: Post your cold remedies
My renedy is odd I guess. Whenever I feel one coming I go into uber exercise mode. The exercise helps keep my blood flowing and keep congestion down. I have no idea why it works for me but it really does seem to work.

Re: Post your cold remedies
And tuna how the heck did you change your name? Didn't even know that could be done.

I hear ya with the exercise thing. I'm a total gym rat as it is (6 days a week religiously), but sometimes you just get to sick to go. I felt a cold coming on a few weeks ago and worked out for two days despite knowing I was getting sick. Turns out I got the flu and was in bed for literally 4 days straight. Ugh. As far as cold remedies- Zicam rapid melts are very good for easing symptoms and shortening the length of your cold. It's homepathic- no drugs- but really works well. Also, I swear by Airborne (those effervescent tablets). They have tons of antioxidants and really boost your immune system. I basically do a cocktail of multivitamins, zicam, airborne, and echinacea. I really don't like taking medicine during the day b/c I HATE the feeling of "medicine head." Also, you gotta take NyQuil (liquid, not gel tabs) at night. Sleep is one of the body's best ways of recovery and recuperation. NyQuil clears up cough and congestion and knocks you out. Love the stuff. |

I assume this remedy came from your Mothers side of the family ;) |
Re: Post your cold remedies
First, this is a great idea to post! Especially since I seem to get about 10 colds a year, at least when I lived in Nashville. My remedy recently has been pretty much just like GMScud's....Zicam as soon as I feel funny (I like the nasal swabs), Nyquil liquid at night (if it looks like it's getting bad), and drink liquids all day....water, gatorade, tea, and maybe a couple of red bull and vodka's ;)

Re: Post your cold remedies
Alcohol definitely makes you sleep better (or at least fall asleep faster), but as far as the immune system is concerned- stay away while you're sick. Not to mention if you're taking other medicines, since mixing them with alcohol is so so so bad for your liver and kidneys.
Look, I'll be the first one at the bar to tip a few when I'm feeling well, but if it's night time and you're sick and feel like shit, just take a dose and a half of nyquil and you'll be out like a light. No need to drink. That is, unless you don't have nyquil in the house but you do have booze. If that's the case, take 2-3 shots and call it a night! |

Re: Post your cold remedies
Basically there is no miracle cure. Nothing beats getting plenty of rest and fluids and some good ol' chicken soup.

Re: Post your cold remedies
I remember in college when I would get a headcold I would down a pitcher of OJ in the course of about an hour. I doubt it actually did anything to get rid of the cold but it usually had a nice placebo effect.
Hot showers are also a must. |
Re: Post your cold remedies
Hot showers, hot liquids, nyquil and plenty of rest.

I've probably bought 20 or so sleeves of that stuff. At $6 - $7 a sleeve, I want my money back!! Unbelievable. Thanks for posting that, otherwise I would have continued to waste my money on a hoax. |
Re: Post your cold remedies
I'm bumping this thread again for a few reasons:
1) because it's Cold/Flu season again 2) We have new members since this original post who may have their own holistic/home remedies and I'm always willing to try new things (as long as they don't cost an arm and a leg) 3) Because I swear to God I have the swine flu. :Smoker: |

One thing to do -- cut down on sugar intake. Sugar depresses the immune system. (something to keep in mind as flu season arrives)

Re: Post your cold remedies
I used to just keep enough alcohol in my body so that nothing else could possibly live there and I would never get sick; unfortunately, it was getting to the point where I couldn't live there either.

Re: Post your cold remedies
I had a summer cold a few weeks back and I slept it away. At least 12 hours a night and you're good to go in no time.

Re: Post your cold remedies
Drink a lot of water and I mean a lot. Before you sleep cut a potato in half and put them in your socks, cut side on your skin. This will suck out the sickness while you sleep.
Sleep as much as possible by drinking large amounts of Nyquill. Don't overdue it or you might wake up dead. In your waking hours, I suggest Southern Comfort or bong hits. Get some Vicks vapor rub and smear it into your beard. I have a beard, so that's what I do. If not just cram a hefty amount into your nostrils. You can also smear a can of Icy Hot all over your body when you get out of the shower too. Avoid the genitals. Wash that sickness off of your body. Oh yeah, don't go to work either. Sit around the house watching endless hours of television, napping, and cleaning. You have to wash the sickness out of your house too. Bleach works well on everything. This will also help your head to clear up. Make sure you get a lot of sex, with a woman. Eat a lot too. Mexican has a high content of fat, which studies have shown, fights sickness. Get the especial, which is basically one of everything. Eddy's Peanut Butter Swirl ice cream has all kinds of nutrients your body needs. Scoff that down too. If you don't feel better after that you'll need a testosterone injection. |
Re: Post your cold remedies
Consume a phall curry, imbibe enough vodka to make walking difficult followed by a 64oz pitcher of iced water and then sleep.

Yeah, I can't really say that I follow this advice. The other day I went to the grocery store to get a dozen glazed donuts for breakfast for my kids. I wound up eating half the box myself. That's okay though -- I won't have anymore donuts for at least 3 or 4 months. |

Men really do have an excuse for suffering terribly with so-called ‘minor’ coughs and colds - their immune systems are not as strong as women’s, research suggests. A Canadian study indicates that the female sex hormone oestrogen not only makes them weepy and overly emotional, it also gives women’s immune systems added bite when it comes to fighting off infection. “I fucking KNEW it,” said one man-flu sufferer this morning. “You wait till she hears about this. My genuine suffering is now certified by the whole of science!” With man-flu now a fully fledged scientific and medical fact, the number of sufferers previously diagnosed as malingering hypochondriacs is expected to rise significantly. |
