Deion making a comeback?

I'm surprised no one here has jumped on the report today that Deion Sanders might like to make a comeback as a nickel back for the Ravens.

Normally, any mention of his name in the news generates a lot of venom here. Why is everyone so quiet? Is this the "Forgiving Season"? Did I miss a memo somewhere?

RedskinRat 08-16-2004 03:36 PM

I was busy puking after I read the report.....

cpayne5 08-16-2004 03:55 PM

Do we still have rights to him?

EEich 08-16-2004 03:57 PM

I think we waived them last year.

SmootSmack 08-16-2004 03:58 PM

This is the first I heard of it, is this because of Dale Carter? Was there actually any indication that there is actual discussion or is he just saying that he'd like to play for them. Who are your sources? C'mon Curmudgeon! Don't give us a half-ass post like that, you know better!....I'm just messin' wit' ya
I think we waived them last year.
Crap. I wish we had the power to keep him out of the league.

Bergman14 08-16-2004 04:07 PM

Well I do too, but of course when Deion bitched about Shottenheimer, then retired, only to want to play again for the Raiders, Dan let him out of the contract, another to add to the list of things Dan has done to piss me off. We wasted so much money on that guy, and you are going to just let him go? Not that I would ever play him, as Dan did in the first place, but thats another story

MTK 08-16-2004 04:12 PM

SD last had rights to him, not sure what his situation is now.

oldswill 08-16-2004 04:43 PM

shouldn't have had the rights to the ex cowpie in the first place, thanks danny!

Drift Reality 08-16-2004 05:07 PM

Best Case Scenario - Deion Sanders goes to play for the Ravens this season, who we play on October 10th.

In the first quarter, Gibbs decides to make Deion look like the moron he is and inserts Pita Elisara at H-Back. Elisara runs a slant and since he is such a pimp he makes a cut and Deion Sanders breaks his ankle trying to cover him. Then Deion lies on the ground like a bitch and starts crying.

Hasselbeck (who is starting by now) throws a bullet to Elisara who catches the ball one-handed, and then picks up Deion with his other hand and swings him around like a club, knocking defenders away while he sprints to the endzone.

Touchdown.

I would bet on the latter. Kinda like when he decided he wanted to be a head coach (was it Atlanta he was going to coach??) LOL LOL LOL

That Guy 08-16-2004 05:43 PM

i'm NOT A FAN. sorry deion.

Daseal 08-16-2004 06:06 PM

Trash him all you like, but in his hay day one of the best CBs of all time. I don't agree with what he did to the skins, but he was one hell of a player in his day.

In closing - Give it up. You make a ton of money announcing and you don't have to work near as hard.

MTK 08-16-2004 06:42 PM

Pita = Pimp

LOL

aehs77 08-16-2004 10:44 PM

what makes him think he could make a decent comeback now. the only football he has played in the last three years was in the rock n jock on mtv. and nelly was giving him trouble.

SUNRA 08-16-2004 10:48 PM

Deion must be in the need for some neion like in money because he demanded a raise on CBS before being fired. My take on him is once a Cowboy, always a Cowboy.

aehs77 08-16-2004 10:52 PM

i dont know what he is thinking, the only football he has played in the last 3 years was in the rock'n jock superbowl. and nelly was giving all he could handle.

Daseal 08-16-2004 11:08 PM

If you do remember our own Daryll Green played at this age. I think he wants another ring more than anything.

Anyhow, I say stick to something besides football.

That Guy 08-16-2004 11:43 PM

i'd rather watch him hired as the head coach of the atlanta falcon's... that would have been awesome... just like watching a train wreck in slow-motion... no one would be able to look away.

raleighskinsfan 08-17-2004 09:40 AM

Hope he comes back

I hope he comes back to the Ravens. Because we play them this year. I would love to see Deion try to match up with Darnerian McCants in the Red Zone. Watching Clinton Portis run over him would also be fun...

biggirl 08-17-2004 10:32 AM

Dion

As big a fan as I am of the 'Skins, I am an even bigger UN-fan of Dion :tongue
My favorite play of his Redskin career was watching him do his little dance while waiting for a ball to come down for a return...and it hitting him in the facemask. Oh, how I laughed! I couldn't help but root against him, even when he was in the burgundy and gold. I should say when he soiled the burgundy and gold. I wish he would just go away...

Davnpurt 08-17-2004 10:41 AM

I think he is just trying to drum up some attention. This guy believes he is some sort of Americana-iconic figure in the American sports psyche. Truth of the matter is he is three full years removed from the most physically intensive sport in the world. If he were to come back he would surely find that his physical gifts have eroded to the point of embarassment. Chris Mortensen keeps saying how he beat out Fuller and R. Lewis in a foot race across the street. Big Deal. Deion was great, I will acquiesce that. However, his strength lied in his foot speed and coverage skills which I hasten to think still persist. His tackling was always sub-par. This is a circus act to plug himself back into the forefront of US sports.

Skins fan 44 08-17-2004 11:34 AM

Would love to see him come back only to get burnt so many times that he is cut bye mid season. But I would not want to bet against him doing well.

kingerock 08-17-2004 12:25 PM

I think the biggest thing to me is that the Ravens is a defense that hits very, very hard. Deion is not known for hitting, actually to the contrary. His strength was stoping the play before it starting with INTs and swatting, and of course punt returns. If the WR already had the ball the best he could do is push him out of bounds.

sportscurmudgeon 08-17-2004 01:31 PM

Noiw there's the venomous Deion hate-mail I expected to see here. You all just needed something to get you jump-started...

MTK 08-17-2004 01:42 PM

I think he could still be effective in a limited role.

I know we all hated the hell out of him when he was here but he wasn't horrible. He wasn't the Deion of old and he clearly had lost a step, but he was still better than most corners in the league.

Hogskin 08-17-2004 04:32 PM

It seemed to me when he was here, he did very well on deep coverages, but was beaten like a drum on crossing patterns. It didn't take defenses any time at all to figure out how to attack him. He may be able to help as a nickle back, but he better be on outside coverage...

With Ohalete being cut, Baltimore might be interesed in picking him up rather than the neion man.

Matty is correct, he was not the deion of old with the skins but he was not too shabby either. Prime time wont even think about suiting up for balt until about mid oct. That will give him time to get in shape and make sure that the ravens are in a position to make a super bowl run. If the ravens start out 1-7 I doubt he will play for them.

sportscurmudgeon 08-18-2004 10:03 PM

irish:

Here are the Ravens' first 8 games:

at Cleveland
vs Pitts
at Cincy
vs KC
at Washington
bye week
vs. Buffalo
at Philly
vs Cleveland

If Baltimore starts out 1-7 against that schedule there will be a lot more hell to pay than not having Deion coming to play for the team. How would you like to be the guy who gets to interview Ray Lewis about why the team is taking so much gas after that 2nd Cleveland game? I think that reporter should get danger pay.

MTK 08-18-2004 10:32 PM

If our own Darrell Green could play into his 40's, I don't see why Deion can't come back at 37 in a similar role.
With Ohalete being cut, Baltimore might be interesed in picking him up rather than the neion man.
hahahaha, not a chance in hell would any team take iffy over sanders. Denion is still a playmaker and a gifted athlete. He was still good as a skin, not as good as he was in previous years, but still made plays. And he doesnt have much expected of him if he goes to the ravens, he would be a nickel back, not a starting corner.

irish 08-19-2004 08:59 AM

Sports, i doubt balt will start out 1-7 but my point was deion will not play in sept but will wait to make sure they are really in the playoff race before suiting up.

MTK 08-19-2004 09:15 AM

He worked out with the Texas Rangers yesterday and was elusive with questions about him coming back to the NFL, so who knows what's going on with him. Could be just a publicity stunt.
