Reputation system: stay or go

Lately this stuff is more of a headache than it's worth IMO. So let's have a vote. Majority wins. Personally I don't care either way and I think too much is made of it but I'll roll with whatever the majority says.

I like it, but I'm not really married to it. Not that being married to it would be a deal breaker for getting rid of it either.

I don't really care what others think of my, or someone else's, posts. Keep it, junk it, modify it......I don't care.

Re: Reputation system: stay or go

Only time I ever use it is if a post is really bad, so it should probably go.

Personally, I think it's underused. I say this because I only have two green rectangles, and I crap gold.

I think its pretty much worthless. I think Ive only used it 3 times but thats just my opinion.

Re: Reputation system: stay or go

Rep points and post counts mean so little that starting a poll and a thread is already expending way too much energy on the subject. I'd just leave it and if people whine, turn a deaf ear.

Hasn't added anything to my experience of this site. Seems like a waste of time to me.

You're just copying and reposting now, huh? NEGATIVE REP POINTS FOR YOU!

j/k

Re: Reputation system: stay or go

Keep it. Let others worry about it and actually expand energy whining if they want but now having a poll and discussing it is actually making it worse. It deserves to exist but be allowed to fester irrelevantly in perpitude.

I use it as measure of how good a member is as opposed to just how many posts that they have.

Now that's the most insightful comment yet. I think you should be awarded positive rep points for that.

I really enjoy this board. Just been too busy to have the chance to post.
I'd recommend doing what is makes life easier for the mods. Either way
won't cause any heartburn.

Re: Reputation system: stay or go

I've never used it, which means keeping it is fine by me. I keep track of my own reputation system when I peruse The Warpath. Consistently good posters, not the Pam Anderson type, leave a much larger literary imprint in my mind than the not-so-good-posters but I still read everybody's post regardless...except Smootsmack's 'cuz he's a meanie.

Re: Reputation system: stay or go

I use it but I really wouldn't care if it stayed or went, there are both positives and negatives for both options but it's really not that big of a deal since most of the "best" posters know each other anyways.

Some people use it but some don't. If it's a headache to the mods then take it away, since it's not really benefiting us that much anyways. It's a nice way to recognize someone for how much they contribute to the site but it's not gonna matter if we don't use it.

Re: Reputation system: stay or go

I'm not sure its purpose is fully understood. Or even that people know how to use it. I've gotten negative rep points with a comment saying "Great job. I totally agree" and positive ones saying "You're a jerk" (Herschel Walker gives me rep points :) )

That said, I say keep it. We just need a better understanding of how/why to use it

yeah, i never really use it or look at it so i say it may as well go, but its not big for me either way

Junk it. If you give neg rep points for crappy posts, the d-bags just give them right back for no reason. What's the point?

Nuts. Apparently I have run out of positive rep points to give out. I'm willing to concede that it's possible I don't understand how this all works.

I like the rep system. I've never actually heard anyone but SBF REALLY have something to say about it.

I feel like most people are really indifferent towards the whole system. They could live with or without it.

So much for these being private. :)

Yeah in retrospect I probably didn't need to give you negative rep points on that. I didn't care for the comment and didn't think it added anything but I can understand the case for it not to be given

Negative rep points for calling me out :)

That happened to me the other day. If it happens again, I've decided I'm just going to neg rep them back with a big "FAIL" in the comments. ;)

That happened to me today, i got neg repped and the comment was "a very good post" lolol. That makes me an advocate of the "I believe we should teach people how to use the rep" system.

I got neg. rep points for having my location say inside your girlfriend LOL and the guy called me fat it was a trumatic experience LOL

Dirtbag59 04-24-2008 11:34 PM

Re: Reputation system: stay or go

I think the rep system is actually pretty good. It discourages flaming and as others have alluded to it makes people focus on quality rather then quanity when it comes to posting. As with the flaming I'll argue that the guys over at ES, who don't have a rep system, flame a lot. Of course the mods don't stop the guys over there from creating pointless threads, and as expected people get annoyed so I guess a rep system isn't really the saving grace, but then again maybe it prevents people from being dicks over here for no good reason.

I also like how the people who give rep points remain anonymous since the whole point of a rep system is to reward people, not reward yourself. I mean sometimes you can tell, but very rarely have I ever rewarded someone with rep just because they gave me a few points.

And I mean it's not like it prevents people from disagreeing on points and debating, in fact the only time I've seen people get bad rep points is when they come in and say or do something that is so utterly stupid that it's just beyond reasoning.

So I say keep the rep system, I mean it's not the most important thing but I believe it does it's part in keeping the peace around here.

Edit: Another good thing about the system is that so far I've only seen one or two people asking for rep points, which is a miracle compared to other places with the same system.

Its true what the genius says. He has crapped gold. Human nature will never allow him to get his due because he avoids controversy and is not perceived as a power player so no one kisses up to him.

Re: Reputation system: stay or go

I say get rid of it because it will never be used properly. However, if there are those who wish to keep it, then give the rep power solely to the mods. That way retaliation is prevented when 2 people get into a disagreement. If an opinionated moderator is in a heated discussion (not solely referring to Matty), then he or she can not dish out negative rep to the antagonist. It would have to be a Mod not participating in the discussion and the negative rep must be warranted.

This way all rep is dealt out fairly from the visionaries and moderators of the board. Isn't that part of a moderator’s job anyway?

Hog1 04-25-2008 07:56 AM

Re: Reputation system: stay or go

Because we are having to deal with threads to defend or condemn it, to often, I think it has become a distraction

I agree -that's probably the best scenario. It's also gives the mods power to discipline smaller offenses without threatening a suspension or ban.

I also don't get the "You must spread reputation around" thing. I tried to give him +rep for that post I quoted, and it won't let me. What's the deal with that?

Well we have the infraction system for that too.
