The Redskins strike it big by moving back and still picking up the dynamic receiver they coveted. Devin Thomas was considered the top receiver in the draft by several teams, and adding his explosive skills to the Redskins' lineup should improve their passing game. Thomas should compete for playing time immediately as the Redskins' third receiver, and could supplant Antwaan Randle-El as the split end in Jim Zorn's new offense.

The Redskins land arguably the most complete tight end in the draft. Fred Davis was regarded by most scouts as the top tight end, and pairing him with Chris Cooley gives the Redskins a formidable tandem at the position. The Redskins have done a nice job of upgrading their passing game with their first few picks of the day.

OKLAHOMA - HT: 6-3.5 WT: 224 - SI GRADE: 3.88

The Redskins continue their terrific draft by picking up another prospect that carried a first round grade for most of the season. Malcolm Kelly adds size, playmaking and toughness to the Redskins, and gives Jim Zorn all the ingredients to implement more four-receiver sets next season. Much has been made of Kelly's speed deficiencies, but he is an ideal slot receiver in the Redskins' zebra and eagle packages.

Washington's patience pays off, trading back and getting the top wideout on most teams' boards at 34th overall. Thomas has size, a rarity for Redskins wideouts, and can likely play right away. At 6'2, he's a great target for Jason Campbell.

48. Redskins Fred Davis TE 6-4 250 USC
Fred Davis was actually my top-rated tight end, and will work with Chris Cooley at the TE spot in Washington. The Mackey Award winner led the Trojans in receptions last season.

51. Redskins Malcolm Kelly WR 6-3 219 Oklahoma
Another guy who slipped. Kelly had a curious Pro Day in early April, blaming the Oklahoma facilities for his mediocre performance. He can play, though, and some had him going at No. 11 to Buffalo prior to the draft. With Thomas, the tight end Davis, and Kelly, Jason Campbell picks up a bunch of targets.

3. Washington (from Oakland though Atlanta) select: Devin Thomas
Comment: The Redskins' pick of Devin Thomas was a no-brainer, and they'll be sure to send a fruit basket to the Rams. Thomas has size and speed, which the Redskins need badly. It might take 2/3rds of the season, but Thomas should do well in the Redskins' West-Coast offense.

17. Washington (from Houston through Atlanta) select: Fred Davis, TE, Southern California
Comment: Fred Davis is a player I watched a lot of in college. He reminds me of Alge Crumpler, which is why I am surprised that the Redskins would take him when they have a guy BETTER than Crumpler at tight end in Chris Cooley. No doubt, Davis is a terrific West-Coast Offense tight end, but I don't know how he'll fit into Washington's plans.

20. Washington Redskins select: Malcolm Kelly, WR, Oklahoma
Comment: Suddenly, Washington's receiving corps got a lot bigger. Between Devin Thomas and Kelly, the average size of their receiving corps went up three inches. Kelly appears to be a quality possession-type receiver with good hands and decent speed. He might take a little while to develop, but he should be fine in the long run. Washington's WR corps is really intriguing now.

Nice to read but did they see our line work last season? Did they see the Super Bowl with a great QB not getting the time to throw? The Skins have a older line with little back up. That is not even talking about the D line or LB or S and CB short falls! Then again maybe this is a two draft fix or more?

Wow, you guys are bitter. We got 3 first round talents in the second round and added enough youth to our passing game so that, hopefully, it will be secure for several years to come.

It's easy to say, yeah, we should have addressed the lines but if you look at the players that were available versus who we chose I think it's tough to whine too much.

Reading the initial post it seems that even the anti-Redskins media has to admit we did ok.

My initial thought on Davis was we need defensive help to bad however if we can get some gem in the latter rounds we should be ok also the will be undrafted free agents and June 1 cuts we also can sift through

It is ironic that the media thinks we had a pretty darn good draft but people on the board are up in arms. I would like to reiterate that there is a whole SECOND day of the draft and we have 6 picks today and after that, we can sign undrafted FAs. Amazing! There is a lot of depth in this draft. Lets see how today works before we declare that the sky is falling

Mel Kiper picked us to spotlight, saying that we had an excellent draft. I was also listening to Sirius NFL radio, and they said "Watch out for the new Redskins weapons" and said we had a great draft.

I would agree! There are two days to the Draft so lets all take a deep breath and chill. No one is more awared of what they need to take care of then the Redskins.

I've heard nothing but praise for what we did so far. Two of the top WRs and one of the top TEs. Hard to hate on that. Campbell will now have a full compliment of weapons at his disposal.

I think our draft will be defined by the 2nd day players; namely the quality and holes that the next 2 picks fill.

So far so good. Now if we can find a few gems in the 2nd day, and no more WR's.....that would be great. I'm hoping for a OL, DB, DE, DT, LB and QB in day two and hope half or better of these picks turn into players down the road.

How quickly we forget how our inept our offense was last year. All the crying last year, if we had a big Red Zone target for J.C., if only Moss could stay healthy, Cooley needs some help and so on....boy, memories sure are short around here.

The Skins are giving every chance for JC to become a pro bowler...unlike other QB prospects we have had. Yes I like the Draft picks but I was Surprised we did not get a DE but the TE pick allows us to line up in two TE sets and go down the field or run.

I think there is no need to question our moves. We have done well for ourselves! Now that being said if the second day of drafting we select more WR's then I would worry.

I would like to see us pick up Jason Taylor who would be available for a 3rd or 4th pick as was said by the experts. He could play for a couple of years and give us time to get a young DE to learn from the past Defensive MVP!

And didn't we go half way through last season with no TDs for our WRs?

It's funny, at the end of last season a lot of people agreed we needed a serious upgrade at the WR spot and more weapons for JC in general. Moss hasn't done much since 2005 and ARE while solid doesn't exactly scare anyone on a consistent basis. Fast forward to this weekend and it seems that most people have forgotten about how mediocre our WRs were. For some strange reason people have convinced themselves the defense was the problem last year.

I honestly think our offense is going to run a lot better now with a bigger target at WR. I also think Devin Thomas is going to help Randle El be more of a factor on punt returns and let him get a breather every once in a while. A luxury ARE didn't have last year.

Their probably fixated on splash but you have to admit that JC held on to the ball to long. Your right we had pit falls on the line but every team does if you expect it to block for more then 7 sec. We needed some threats. Big tall threats. Randel El and Thrash are not real threats. Moss is our only player besides Cooley teams worry about in the WR corpse. So they stacked the line (again and again) challenging us to throw to who? Double Moss and we were screwed.

There are some people who need to be called down from the ledge here. This isn't going to be our last draft for life. I'm sure there plans to implement these guys into our offense. Also free agency and the draft take place every year. We can always use our draft next year to shore up the O-line.

I can't complain with how the draft turned out. I'm pleased with the picks. Sounds like we got some great new talents
