Redskins Insider: Draft Review
More of the same from the ever growing Skins wet blanket.

Re: Redskins Insider: Draft Review
Dudes, Jason LaConfora is the most negative dude in the world. I like him most of the time, but he pisses me off with posts like that. Let's see how it unfolds before you bring up your conspiracy theories about falling recievers on certain peoples draft boards.

Re: Redskins Insider: Draft Review
Malcolm Kelly looks like a player to me. From the limited stuff I've seen on him I don't think the Skins were merely pulling stuff out of thin air here. Fred Davis also looks like a player, though this pick is probably the one to watch. If Calais Campbell is a beast it might get tough to justify this pick, even if Davis is productive. If Campbell isn't all that great then passing on him might look better.
Another spin JLC could have put on this would be to compare it to the 2002 Eagles draft where they got Lito Sheppard, Michael Lewis, and Sheldon Brown in the first two rounds even though they still had a couple of Pro Bowlers at corner. Many have long said that the Eagles are one of the franchises that 'does things right' and they got those guys in there, moved out higher priced players in subsequent seasons, and reloaded their roster. Since the Redskins are only going to be paying these guys 2nd round money they are really going to be coming in on the cheap. They will also have some time to develop behind some proven starters, which is imperative for most young WRs. I do think the Philadelphia example is apt, though, and it might also be worth mentioning that among those WRs that Snyder 'coveted', Moss and Braylon Edwards and probably Calvin Johnson all have turned out to be pretty good players. |
Re: Redskins Insider: Draft Review
Wet blanket is right.
JLC has jumped the shark big time. |
Re: Redskins Insider: Draft Review
His column should have read like this...
"Draft Review Anyone who tries to tell you they can judge a draft immediately is full on bunk. So I'll shut up now." And that's it. Like I said last week, I heard a rumor that he'll be gone as RI in the next couple of months. I really really hope that rumor is true. Maybe he can go get a job as Earnest Byner's cabana boy. |

Re: Redskins Insider: Draft Review
I agree. I'll value Mel Kiper Jr opinion and his 30 years of draft coverage and researsh before JLC throws the front office under the bus for this past weekend. Kiper gave us a B+ grade, second only to the 'A' earned by the Chiefs which I think everyone would agree had the best draft, at least the best Day 1

Re: Redskins Insider: Draft Review
Bottom line...
If the Redskins do not score 30 points a game EVERY game, this draft will be completely fruitless. Lets look at this from an offensive standpoint for a second... They LOVE Lorenzo Alexander, Stephon Heyer, and now have a solid RG-RT from the draft. They still have Clinton Portis and Ledell Betts. Now, they have one of the best TE's in the draft, arguably the best game changing receiver and KR threat, and another big body in Malcolm Kelly. ARE wont be around come 2011, and Moss may be on his way out as well. This was a great pickup, with SUPERIOR pass catchers the west coast offense can flourish. I can only imagine set running plays with Mix, Kelly, Cooley and Davis all at wing spots within the lineup. We can become highly dynamic, and possibly turn into the greatest show on grass. Lets face it, Tryon has the attitude and strength to become a strong defensive playmaker. Kareem Moore can easily beat out Doughty. I think Caleb Campbell, Craig Steltz or Jonathan Hefney would have been better pickups, but I trust Blache. I hope Erin Henderson is within our RFA group and maybe Erik Ainge and Jamar Adams... All in all I think Rob Jackson could be a poor man's justin tuck, and I truly love the Fred Davis pick... |
Re: Redskins Insider: Draft Review
Man, he really has a bug up his ass for DS and VC. It seems like they can do no right. Part of me hopes the WR's and TE burn it up just watch him twist. I got no feelings one way or another for the guy but some of his ill-will seems a little over the top. There are some legitimate criticisms but, jeez, it's not like this wasn't an area of need where top talent was available.
Yes. They took a bit of a gamble - gambles have down sides, deal with it. Should we have spent more on defense, I dunno we have been pretty defensive oriented the last few drafts and, as a result, offensive depth has suffered. |

The Skins 'aint going to score over 30 points a game next year. That would probably be the biggest offensive turn around in history if it happens. They undoubtedly added some very important pieces to the puzzle this weekend, as you've noted, but that would be a big jump. Hey at first glance your screen name looks like another dude that comes around here every now and then. His name is Schneed. |
Re: Redskins Insider: Draft Review
agree they will not score 30 points/game next year but YOU CANNOT DENY the fact that everything they have done from the moment Gibbs retired to the present time has been focused to jumpstart the offense. From the firing of Saunders and the hiring of Zorn, the the proclomation that Campbell is the starter and bringing in all those offensive draftees. I know the defensive is getting old but lets cmon they were solid last year, really no chnage in philosophy and we did strenghten the secondary.
I do think that 2008 will be an improvement in the offense but it will take at least a full year for the team to digest the new offense and for the new kids to get their feet wet. |
Re: Redskins Insider: Draft Review
I was debating whether to create another thread with this but it seems like the best forum for it right here. I felt the same way about the JLC blog post this morning when I read it so I sent him an e-mail. He's always been cool about replying to my e-mails so I figured I'd give it a shot.. Here's what I sent and I italicized his response. Despite how you feel about his writing or stance, he's a stand-up dude IMO.
JLC- First of all, thanks for all that you do and the diligent work that you put in to keep us informed year round on all things Redskins! I do however have to point out that I’ve been troubled by your tone on your recent posts. While you aren’t a fan (nor should you be as a journalist) there is a decidedly more negative/bitter tone towards many things in your blog since the coaching search. I’m not deluded enough to think that Danny and Vinny are above reproach or are right all or even most of the time, but I’m willing to let this play out with Zorn without the gloom and doom that accompanies your recent postings. My concern is that people will stop reading the blog because they don’t want to always read the negative tone and the Post will eliminate it for lack of traffic. I’ll continue to tune in to the blog postings and thanks again for all of your efforts!! Hail. JLC Response: Thanks so much for taking the time to write, John. Awesome of you to do so. I'm just trying to hold them accountable and see if their words match their deeds, as they ask the fans to pay gobs of money for this product but are generally less than forthcoming or truthful to these same fans. When they do something positive - lkike trading down, etc - I'm never shy to say so. And if they make puzzling and unusual moves - which pretty much defines the last 4 months - then I detail why succesful front offices and people around the league found those moves odd and potentially troubling to the fans here. Lately, the weird has outweighed all else and without gibbs there and just snyder and cerrato running the show they are going to be evaluated every so closely. Neither has anything close to a sparkling track record, and in my opinion warrant a critical look as they make major decisions that will shape the franchise. Thanks again for reading the blog and sending the email. I will definitely keep your words in mind. Cheers |
Re: Redskins Insider: Draft Review
He is a standup guy and will respond to most emails. I just wish he could outline what he did like about the Redskins draft. It just seems odd when most draft experts are giving the Redskins a good grade and here's JLC tearing them a new one.

Re: Redskins Insider: Draft Review
the skins having a wr rated so high they couldnt pass on him even though they had other needs . . sounds like when we drafted taylor jacobs instead of mike doss, "we were just so surprised he was still there we had to do it!!"
go skins! |
Re: Redskins Insider: Draft Review
This guy is kind of turning into a gas bag who doesn't provide any real info. I mean, I'm not going to sit here and say the skins are going 13-3 this year...but one can at least be positive. This was a GOOD draft...we got three players with first round grades, and then proceeded to shore up some holes for depth. Initially, I didn't like passing on DL, but I think we did a good job, and I'll wait till after June 1st to make any judgments.

Re: Redskins Insider: Draft Review
I call BS on the "being honest with fans" crap. What I infer from that is "being honest with journalists so when we write what they tell us we don't look like idiots after they do something different". I mean really how are they not being honest with fans? That doesn't even make sense. He just seem slightly bitter that his contacts are gone and he is left with the people he just doesn't like and can't get much info from.

go skins!
For the record, Mike Doss hasn't been a player either and is now a reserve with the Vikings (i.e. not the team that drafted him). Historical analogies are pretty slippery, and not all that useful, when it comes to the draft IMO. |

go skins!
So the Skins are supposed to say to themselves "Say, look who's available. A player rated far and away better than anyone else on our board. Ohhh, but he is a WR and I remembr a couple years ago we drafted a WR in a very similar situation and it didn't work out. We better pass on the guy since we blew this once before." Is that what you are saying? |

Is that what you are saying?
What I believe he is saying is we have heard this story before, the justification of the picking of a player that is not a big need position, but he is picked any way because management is in love with skill players rather than a much less sexier pick but more of a need and core pick in linemen. In other words just because he was rated as a top pick on our board doesn't mean he was on anyone Else's. Jason Campbell is another example of that he was a mid to late 2nd round pick at best and we turned him into a #1. As JLC pointed out it really doesn't matter how many WR's you have if you can't block or pass protect they will never see the ball, and he's right we had opportunity to address plenty of other needs especially with an ageing O-line and still get any WR they wanted, and could have thrown Calias Campbell or another D-lineman in with that group. Can someone explain even if all these receivers turn out to be good NFL players [which I believe they will] how are we going to keep them all happy, there is only one ball to go around and 3 pro bowlers sitting in front of these kids? |

Sometimes the "herd" (if one actually exists) is wrong and sometimes it is right. You are under the mistaken impression that, by disagreeing with nearly every front office move and coaching decision, you are somehow more astute and objective than the rest of us. By reacting in such a knee-jerk fashion to nearly everything that happens at Redskins Park and FedEx Field, you are actually showing that you are totally incapable of viewing things objectively. You are absolutely incapable of seeing the good and the bad. |
Re: Redskins Insider: Draft Review
I remember taking a bunch of grief around here when I spoke up about my dislike for JLC. Now he is just making it too easy for Redskin fans to ignore him. I still say much of the core issue is the fact that Dan Snyder and the The Washington Post straight up hate one another.

I think you are seeing it the wrong way. You said I disagree with nearly every move which means I agree with some, which I do. I can hardly think of anyone on this site besides myself that ever says anything negative about the Skins. In fact the way most talk on this board one would think the Skins are the 10 time defending Super Bowl champs instead of barely sniffing the playoffs in the past 15 years. In reality I am much more objective than 99% of the "knowledgeable" fans on this site. I am certain that if you look back at the past posts you will see that anyone that says the Skins are great and making all the right moves is very astute and knowledgeable while anyone that utters a negative word is labeled as anti-redskin or not objective. |

If you really need me to, I'll go searching for evidence. I was critical of our failure to get help along the lines in the draft, notwithstanding our "BPA" philosophy. I was extremely critical of the attempt to trade for Chad Johnson. Skinsfan69 has been critical of a fair number of moves. I could go on and on. As for your posts, I don't think I've EVER seen you say anything positive. You usually pop up when things go wrong and disappear when things are going well. IMO, you've taken things to extreme and go out of your way to complain about the state of the team. You rarely, if ever, talk about the bad AND the good. |

Re: Redskins Insider: Draft Review
Problem that is that when irish decides to focus on something negative, he'll spin things every way he can to keep it negative. First we're not keeping our own key players he says, then as we start to notice a definite trend that way (Jansen, Betts, Sellers, Cooley) he say it's not enough. Then when we re-sign Cartwright, it's why are we keeping this guy?
He can call it "keeping it real" but as I said in another thread a while back, being "real" is recognizing positive change, it's not all about the negative. Skinsfan69 can annoy me sometimes (as I'm sure, I do him). But give me his posts and analysis 10 times out of 10 over irish's. |
Re: Redskins Insider: Draft Review
irish was positive about Todd Collins, if nothing else.

From JLC's article: "No team can go four wide receivers and two tight ends all the time. Just can't be done. Unless they plan on running a whole lot of empty backfield, it's going to be tricky utilizing all of these guys and the existing one. Yes, they certainly have great depth at pass catcher now, but at the expense of how much else?" I tend not to listen to sportswriters (and fans who think they are "more correct than not") who don't have a clue.... JLC is correct, you can't run four WRs & two TEs. It requires 12 players, or an illegal formation. JLCs credibility (and yours) just went out the window. JLC is the main Washington Post writer for the Redskins and he doesn't know enough about football to know the VERY basics. Embarrassing! HS players know this stuff. |

It's quite obvious what JLC's point is that there is only room for so many of the same skill players. So lets throw out the 4-2 analogy and explain how you would use Moss, El, Cooley, Davis, Kelly, Sellars, Thomas, and lets throw Portis in that mix? Keep in mind these players were not drafted to be backup's in this league. When you finish lets compare there possible production to other needs at other positions. |
Re: Redskins Insider: Draft Review
can you tell me the last time a team has picked two WR's and a TE in a draft and all of them were ready to go by or even productive in their first year? I really doubt that we're gonna have a problem choosing how to field all the receivers because I doubt all will be healthy or productive at the same time. If they are all healthy and productive and we have to choose who plays I personally think that's a good problem to have.

If he's going to make a point in a major media outlet, get your facts straight. Don't blow this off, how can you write opinions about the Redskins, say the Front Office screwed up, and not understand something so basic as this? You wouldn't use any of those players in his scenario because it would be going back 5 yds every time you line up. To your point, Kelly and Thomas will probably not both be ready as a # 1 & #2 WR on day one, they will need to develop and learn the NFL and WCO. Here's what I envision this year as a few personnel packages: I-Form: Moss - Z, Thomas - X, Cooley TE, Sellars FB, Portis will be RB is all formations. I-Form or Split-Back (hands): same as above with Davis / Cooley at FB & TE, not sure who is where depends on what Zorn wants to do. 3WR: Moss - Z, Thomas - X, ARE - Slot, Sellars or Cooley FB 3WR (Singleback): same as above Cooley at TE Singleback, 2TE - Moss - Z, Thomas - X, Davis & Cooley TEs Singleback, 2TE wide - same as above with Davis & Cooley either wide or in the slots 4WR - Moss, ARE, Kelly, Thomas. 4WR, TE - add Cooley to above Moss will probably not get through the year healthy. ARE is a good slot WR, not much more. Cooley & Davis can create a lot of mismatches unless a team has very good coverage LBs. If a D brings in a nickle package against a 2TE formation for coverage they will get smashed on a run. If a D stays with LB coverage they better have some good cover LBs to account for Cooley & Davis. Sellars will be a traditional blocking FB. The 2nd round picks are going to be very "cap friendly" for at least three years. By 2010 Moss & ARE will be able to be released and will probably not be effective at that point anyway. From a skill player perspective we are set at WR, TE, RB for at least 3 years. These guys give Zorn many formations to go to and many potential mismatches against the D to exploit. Kelly and Thomas are also bigger WRs, gives Campbell bigger targets as he develops his accuracy. Now how about you come up with a point better than: They should've gotten OL / DL or Campbell won't be able to throw if he doesn't have time. |

Re: Redskins Insider: Draft Review
I'd like to see some evidence that Malcolm Kelly was falling down others teams' draft boards. Somehow I don't think he would have lasted much longer than where we picked him. As for La Canfora's point of a 'self-fulfilling prophecy', all teams have their own draft boards and they rank players where they think they should be. Sometimes they're wrong, sometimes they're right.
Some of you know that I've been very critical of Cerrato and Snyder over the years, but based on the pre-draft information available to everyone leading up to Saturday, it looks like we got some top-rated guys much later than they were expected to go. And when you can pick up extra selections in the process, then I must give credit where credit is due and say bravo to Vinny. I also like the mentality of restocking the wideout department. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if both Moss and Randle El aren't here in 2009 unless cap constraints make it impossible for that to happen. But just like any other draft, you can't possibly address all your needs on one April weekend. This offense simply doesn't score enough points. Overhauling the receivers was something this team was going to have to do at some point. They will have to rebuild the foundation of the offensive line too, no doubt. But it's not like it's falling apart before our eyes. If these guys can get us into the endzone more often this season, nobody will be complaining. |
Re: Redskins Insider: Draft Review
I know how we all love to speculate about the upcoming season and wait in earnest for September to roll around so we can see a glimpse of greatness from recent draft picks and free agent pickups. All I want to say is it is impossible to accurately assess how the Skins will fair each season because we have two morons at the head of our organization. Snyder and Cerratto have been a plague to this team for as long as I can remember. Blown draft picks and absurb free agent signings are a common phenomenon in this town. Just rattling off a few names: Adam Archuleta, Brandon Lloyd, TJ Duckett, Bruce Smith, and Ade Jimoh. All these players with the exception of Jimoh were given enormous salaries and bonuses and yielded little or no production. They actually in reality hurt us. Duckett was famous for losing yards, any deep ball would fly over Jimoh's head, Archuleta couldnt cover a cripple, and Lloyd has about 20 catches in 3 years...
I have been a fan of this team for 20 years and I love them to death. I just want people to understand that in D.C. no one can know how each season will pan out... On a good note, our draft was relatively successful. We could have used an aggressive, quick, strong DE but you can never get what you want with the team all the time. |
