Predict the Opening Day Roster

Now that the draft is complete, we have a pretty good sense of our team. So, while it's early, predict the 53-man opening day roster for the 2008 Washington Redskins. Please note this is opening day (hence why you don't see Carlos Rogers on my roster below).

This isn't necessarily who you want to make the opening day roster, just who you think will make it. You can add practice squad players if you want. I didn't (though I am suspecting guys like Tryon, Mason, and Jackson make that roster)

Here's my roster (some surprises, but that always happens with final rosters)

QB: Jason Campbell, Todd Collins, Colt Brennan

RB: Clinton Portis, Ladell Betts, Rock Cartwright, Eric Shelton

FB: Mike Sellers

TE: Fred Davis, Chris Cooley, Todd Yoder

WR: Santana Moss, Antwaan Randle El, Malcolm Kelly, Devin Thomas, Anthony Mix, Burl Toler

OL: Chris Samuels, Pete Kendall, Casey Rabach, Randy Thomas, Jon Jansen, Lorenzo Alexander, Chad Rinehart, Stephen Heyer, Jason Fabini

K: Shaun Suisham

DL: Phillip Daniels, Cornelius Griffin, Anthony Montgomery, Andre Carter, Alex Buzbee, Demetric Evans, Chris Wilson, Matthias Askew, Kedrick Golston

CB: Shawn Springs, Fred Smoot, Leigh Torrence, Cedrick Holt, Byron Westbrook

S: Reed Doughty, LaRon Landry, Vernon Fox, Chris Horton

LB: Rocky McIntosh, London Fletcher, Marcus Washington, HB Blades, Curtis Gatewood, Khary Campbell

P: Durant Brooks

LS: Ethan Albright

Obviously, since last year, hopefully they will keep a couple extra O-linemen as I did.

No Moore or Tyron?

SmootSmack 05-01-2008 09:53 AM

Re: Predict the Opening Day Roster

Well I'm not sure what Moore's status is with his upcoming surgery, so for now I kept him off the opening day roster.

As for Tyron, I decided that Holt and Westbrook would beat out Eubanks and Tyron for the final CB spots with Tyron going to the practice squad and Eubanks getting cut.

He was the punter / place holder for GT in collage. So to answer your question yes.

Re: Predict the Opening Day Roster

I think both Tryon and Moore stick.

JLC had the Skins pegged for being in love with Moore, I can't see them letting him go. They wouldn't have picked him if they were concerned about injury stuff. He'd beat out Vernon Fox and Chris Horton for a roster spot, if it came down to it. I think he'll also challenge Doughty for a starting job before the season is over.

As for Tryon, he's got a lot more speed than the other CBs fighting for a spot, and he's been a very physical CB in college. He's exactly the kind of CB that Blache will love. He'll be our nickel until Rogers comes back.

Schneed10 05-01-2008 11:42 AM

Re: Predict the Opening Day Roster

And Frost is definitely a goner. This kid Brooks can really hit it.

Frost's numbers haven't been half bad the last few years, but I mean God, how many times did he friggin shank it and just get absolutely lucky on the roll? Seems like every short shanker ended up rolling another 20 yards. I can't remember one of those little shankers bouncing back against the Skins' favor. Frost's numbers could easily have been worse, he's too inconsistent. Brooks will beat him out.

skinsfan242 05-01-2008 11:45 AM

Re: Predict the Opening Day Roster

I like SeanTaylor21's roster except I think Frost is definetly gone. Also I think Yoder and Thrash are going to need to battle a FB for the last spot. I don't think we are going to keep 6 WR's, 3TE's, and ONE FB. I see Thrash not making the team this year since having three TE's seems more logical than 6 WR's, I think MIX will take Thrash's ST's spot.

skinsfan242 05-01-2008 11:49 AM

Re: Predict the Opening Day Roster

Also, I could see Godfrey coming back one more season and Gatweood on the practice squad.

Eric Shelton was picked by the Panthers in the 2nd round a few years ago. He's a big back, but he also looks like a big bust.

Yeah I was going back and forth on that one. I don't think Godfrey is back, but at the same time Gatewood isn't really a viable replacement if you're looking for a run stuffer. Makes more sense to keep Khary Campbell.

But either way, I threw some twists in the roster just to keep things interesting

I think it may actually be minicamp that Moore will miss, not training camp now that I think about it.

By the way, I certainly hope Mason beats out Shelton for a final roster spot at the RB position

Didn't we also pick up J.Mathis the kick returner from the Texans . So unfortunately i don't see Thrash or Mix making the team. Which will be a shame , Thrash is good on special teams and Mix was ok and extremely cheap.

DE: Carter, Daniels, C Wilson, D Evans, Dorian Smith
DT: Griffin, Montgomery, Golston, Boschetti
LB: Fletcher, Washington, McIntosh, Blades, K Campbell, Bryan Wilson, C Gatewood
CB: Springs, Smoot, Rogers, Tryon, L Torrence
S: Landry, Doughty, Moore, Fox

K: Suisham
P: D Brooks
LS: Red Snapper

We keep 6 WRs in lieu of a 4th RB, and Mathis is not one of the WRs. Boschetti makes it because Blache hearts him big time. Dorian Smith makes it as an up-and-coming situational pass rusher. Both Bryan Wilson and Gatewood make it as LBs for depth behind Rocky and Marcus. Frost is history.

This only works if Rinehart works out in camp as an adequate backup at C. If not, probably say goodbye to the 6th WR or one of the UDFA rookie LBs for someone who can back up Rabach.

Re: Predict the Opening Day Roster

With the draft we had, the most interesting position battle will be at wr. I think the coaches will have a hard time deciding whether to keep 6 wr's or 5. Given the WCO & the use of spread formations, plus injuries, 6 wr's might be viable. I hope so, cause I'd hate to see Thrash go.

Other than that, LB will be interesting to watch. They've got to sign some depth IMO.

No Zorn liked his footwork so they're moving him to QB. In all honesty no one knows where Alexander is going to play next year. You ask five different Redskin fans and you'll get five different answers.

So far I've heard G/C/TE/DT/DE

I think Mathis makes the team and Cartwright & Thrash get cut. At this point Rock is a special teams player, not even on the radar as a RB and Thrash was a Gibbs guy and is up there in years. It's time for Mason, Westbrook and Mix to become the ST studs. Mathis is a Pro Bowler with blazing speed (assuming he's healthy) so he will be the primary KR and backup ARE at PR.

Rogers will be on the PUP list for the first 6 weeks then he will take Westbrooks spot. Thrash gets cut unfortunately in favor of Mix who can do everything he can but is younger and can be a viable receving threat. Schmitt makes it as Sellers backup. We sign a veteran LB before camp. Horton and Moore both make it ahead of Fox. We have 9 picks make the team, the only one who doesn't is the DEnd we drafted, he will make the practice squad.

I predict Alex Buzbee has a phenomenal offseason and is Daniel's or Carter's primary backup. Also, I hope we sign a FA CB b/c I am not comfortable with the current corps we have. Also, Blades emerges as a solid LB in place of McIntosh at first, then the eventual replacement to aging Marcus Washington.

Re: Predict the Opening Day Roster

Here's a pretty good read relating to roster hopefulls.

Im honestly pulling for Jerome Mathis. I like Thrash but I dont see this team doing anything special this year, so Id rather take a chance with a guy thats young and could be a solid return man for us for years to come, then a vetren who provides a little stability. Espicailly considering its a new offense for both.

I imagine Mix making it just because of his special teams play. He always seems to be in the right place

Fox at saftey and Thrash at wr seem like hardest decisions to make for Zorn, imo.

We have the chance to be serisouly young at every position but LB, O line, cornor, and rb if we keep most our rookies/signings. Got to wonder if that will have any influence on making the final roster selection. Wernt we the oldest team last year?
