"Unable to sign Adewale Ogunleye to a long-term contract, the Dolphins have begun to gauge trade interest from other NFL clubs for the Pro Bowl defensive end, according to the Miami Herald.

The Redskins already have shown an interest in Ogunleye, offering Miami a first-round pick in exchange for the 26-year-old earlier this summer, according to league sources. If the Dolphins do shop around the premier pass rusher, he likely would draw a hefty asking price. ... "

To quote a famous movie line... "So you're telling me there's a chance!!" I have to say though... if they want MORE than a first round pick... I'd almost say "no-go"

I am one of those guys who says we DO have enough depth at WR to put a package together that involves Rod Gardner... like a Gardner, Ladell Betts (or Rock Cartwright) and a 4th round pick package or something like that. McCants is proving he can be just as valuable as Gardner as the no. 2 receiver. Jacobs and Thrash are more than capable of handling the no. 3 & 4 spots. I'd like to hold on to our 1st round pick next year so we can get a young impact d-lineman...


Also, as a side note... the Atlanta Falcons released CB Derek Ross yesterday. As far as I remember, this is a young (he's 24), and pretty talented (?) ex-Cowgirl. In 2002, in only 9 starts he had 56 tackles and 5 INT's. Once you get past Smoot and Springs on our depth chart... things get a little... weak (Ade Jimoh).... I definitely think he's worth a look at the very least... what do you guys think????

yeah and yeah, but gardner and betts are simply too crappy to get AO... betts rides the bench while gardner drops that crucial pass, AND he's coming off a bad year (for him).

i agree 100%. although since we already offered miami a 1st rounder, we won't be able to reneg. i to think a 1st rounder is to valuable at this point, we do need to look to future somtimes.

In that case how about Ramsey for AO? Although Ramsey has looked terrible this preseason and his value has probably dropped.

Regarding CB Derek Ross, it seems like he might not have the speed to be an NFL cornerback. I know he is tough hitter, maybe a switch to safety might work. Or be a special teams kamikazi.

McCants hasn't proved anything except that he's still too inconsistent.

The thing that concerns me is the big contract he'll be looking for.

also, our pass rush in the pre season thus far has been pretty successful, our defense is looking strong.
and concerning our "lack of depth" at CB, i think we have a lot of depth
Springs, Smoot, Harris (who practiced according to the WP, or will practice very soon), Bauman, Ralph Brown, THEN Ade, but he wont be here much longer.

Well, we've been through this discussion in 3 previous threads, and I still maintain the same thing I have since his name first came up. Gardner and a pick!! Good for us, and they will probably bite. I've heard how they would never want Gardner, we can't give up Gardner, Gardner should be enough, and even that we don't have cap room. None of those are on target. Now I hear we should just offer a draft pick. Well, they won't return the call on that one. Wannstadt wants help NOW. His job is on the line this year. No one is going to give a top WR, so they would be interested in Gardner. Betts could be a throw-in, but it will still require a pick to even it out. I still think (as I have maintained in the other threads):

1. We have a great shot with this type of offer

2. The trade will release room under the cap

3. We NEED a quality pass rusher (not ONE expert will argue this one!)

4. We can afford Gardner, because he will be catching splinters by week 4 if not before the season starts.

5. We may lose out to another team's offer, but don't be surprised if we get him!!

First of all.....Let's give Ramsey a shot. Just because he looked horrible the first two games doesn't mean that he's lost any value. He still has a canon and I think he's still considered a rookie. He's only played 16 games so far in his 2 year career, so let's give him a chance to prove himself. I bet you if Ramsey would've thrown that touchdown pass to McCants no one would be mentioning his name for trades.

Gardner (50-50) needs to have a break out season this year and under Gibbs system, I believe he can. Hopefully with guys like McCants and Thrash pushing for the #2 spot will motivate him a little. As far as our DB's...I think we have pretty good depth to survive this season.

Ogun is asking for a hefty contract, and we all know the Redskins salary cap situation. Smoot, and Gardner are on their contract years so look for them to step up this season.

I know it would be hard... but we could offer up either McCants or Thrash plus a mid-round pick. That would end the 3 WR competition.

Well I am in total disagreement with this statement. He has proved he can score. He had one bad play 2 years ago when he fumbled the ball on his way to the endzone. He also gave up a big payday this year so he could resign with the Skins, knowing that Gibbs was back. This has been widely reported in the media and also the statement was made by Mccants himself. Plus there is no attitude from him, just the will to win.

Trade Jacobs and a pick for the Miami monster. But watching the way the d-line played Saturday, I would give it another week to see if what we saw was not a illusion.

Who is going to want Betts as a major part of a deal? He hasn't done jack in his career so far and surprise, surprise, he's been dinged up all of camp so far. Same for Jacobs.

I voted we're fine without him.

For the kind of $$ he's looking for and this late in camp, I say let him go elsewhere.

Matty, correct me if I'm wrong, but this "Ogun on the block" story is a fake - there's no such story in the Washington times. Even the Miami herald has no such story - all the Herald says is that he remains unsigned.

I was just kidding about trading Ramsey. I was just trying to point out how quickly some folks want to trade away Mark Brunell or Rod Gardner, but are more than willing to give Ramsey all the time he needs to get better. Rod Gardner has proved (2002) that he is an NFL caliber receiver and will get back to great play now that we are playing a pro system again. Brunell's career speaks for itself.
Plus, the replacements for Brunell and Gardner are not ready for primetime.
I don't think either player has the trade value some here are trying imply. It will take at least a 1st round pick to get AO. Including a player would be pointless, because they add very little value to the deal.

I agree. Didn't Gardner have his best year playing Marty-Ball? Maybe Gardner wasn't utilized correctly under the chuck-n-duck. I think this will be one of his best years though (it better be, because he's a starter on my fantasy team!). Like I said this is his contract year so it's obvious that he's going to step up.

Ogun's price is way too high, and for some reason I'm really excited about the defense we have already. Everyone is sleeping on them.

gardner had his best season when he was the number 1 option, now coles is and gardner's production will suffer, but he is still a good compliment to coles. if he was number one still, hed probably put up 1k yards again.

Another school of thought is Rod Gardner will have a better year than 2002, because Coles will draw the double team and will leave Gardner open. If you look at the other receivers in 2002 we had:
Derrius Thompson
Darnerien McCants
Kevin Lockett
Jacquez Green
None of those guys strike fear in a secondary and their stats in 2002 reflected it. Rod Gardner was basically a one man show that year. He did well despite defensive secondary's geared to stop him.
I am looking for Rod Gardner to have a good year this year in the Art Monk role of Joe Gibbs offense.

as Big C points out, Gardner's numbers dropped when Coles became the number one option. With fewer passes thrown in his direction that's to be expected. I'm not looking for a monster season statistically from Gardner. What I'm looking for is a receiver who can command enough respect that opposing defenses aren't constantly double-temaing Coles or putting eight in the box. That make any sense?

Gardner will have a big year in the Monk-possession reciever role. I think Brunell hooks with him well. McCants will come in in the red zone and score TDs. Thrash will be the official #3, given his work ethic, veteran leadership, etc. But they'll rotate the others in as well, especially DMac. Jacobs will have to impress to get time, and he's got to get healthy!

As for Ogunleye, I'd instantly take him for a 1st round pick. What d-lineman in the draft this year (or next?) is up to that level? Miami will only take it to avoid a holdout, and they might want a receiver or an RB thrown in to cover the ricky/boston fiasco. Keep Coles, Gardner, and Portis. Everyone else is up for discussion. Why not?

As for the cash, just leave that to Danny boy and the accountants. When has the cap ever stopped us before? Canuck, are you out there? Can we find the cash money?

I don't think RG was used very well last year. It seemed like he was always catching screens and short dink and dunk stuff. Those are the kind of routes that are better for guys with good quickness and speed, not a physical possession guy. Let him work down the field and be physical with the DB's.

He's shown that he can be a 1000 yard guy in this league. It's a matter of the system he's in using him properly. Spurrier got too caught up in working the ball to Coles all the time.

I think Rod will rebound under Gibbs and put up some good numbers.

I tell you to pound sand up your fundamental orifice because I want to see how far you will go to get a player from me who can do something that none of your DL have shown any great ability to do - - rush the passer.

Now we can get down to something interesting. And by interesting I do not mean Patrick Ramsey. I already have two relatively young QBs that need time and development and I do not need a third one thank you very much.

As the Dolphins GM, I KNOW the team is going to struggle this year and may stink like a skunk's butt. (I can't tell the fans this because Dolphins games don't always sell out and we don't need everyone dumping tix before the season starts.) So, I want your first round pick next year to go along with my own because mine will be an early pick and yours should be in the late-teens to mid-twenties.

But since AO will draw interest from other teams, I want a pot sweetener or I'm going to lose your phone # and be too busy to take any more calls from you. So, how about

a. one of your tight ends (you tell me which one) and your fourth round pick next year.

b. your third round pick next year.

c. Chad Morton and your fourth round pick next year.

What scares me about Ogunleye is that he played opposite of Jason Taylor in Miami who received much of the attention. In DC he would be the main pass rush DL guy and likely be double teamed on every pass play. I have a friend who is a big Miami fan who does not think this guy is worth what they are asking for him.

Also trading away future 1st round picks is never a good idea.

i really dont think it would be wise to bring him in this late in camp, and this far behind in learning the playbook and such, he would not be nearly as effective. keep the pick and see how it goes.

Curmudgeon, all that rationale may sound good to YOU, but it is a sure-fire job termination letter for Wannstadt. The kind of deal you are suggesting is the last thing Miami will do. Forget the QB's, forget the KR's, forget the TE's. AO is not going anywhere unless they get a WR better than their #2 guy and/or a RB better than Minor. The draft picks can be used for pot-sweeteners, but Ricky did not leave enough weed behind for them to deal AO for a #1 and leftover bodies. It would take a boxcar load.

our defenes has done well in preseason, but mainly because of linebackers. I think the Wale would get double teamed, and thus create even more pressure by our linebackers. Teams are going to learn real quick that we blitz linebackers, so they are going to account for it (unless you are spurrier......). But if we have a big threat on the dline, to go with griffin, then they cant just single coverage the dline and throw a back and te on the linebackers. Our defense is good, but he really could make us have an elite defense next yera.

I saw offer a first round pick, Wanstant gave up his GM right last year I think so it isnt up to him. If you are the dolfins front office you gotta take another first for next year and have two picks to go with your new head coach.

I say offer Betts and a #1 for A-gun. If the dolphins dont take it, the hell with it. I really dont think we should give up any big peice of our team ( I.e: Ramsey , Gardner, Samuels or any names that have been thrown around). I think its draft picks and Betts, who lets face it, isnt doing much for us, and see if they take it.

Otherwise, the hell with the Dolphins.

I don't like the idea of trading Gardner -- especially with Coles's health up in the air like it is. If Rod leaves town, and Coles goes down with this injury --we've just shot ourselves in the foot.
