Bears cut Adam Archuleta

This guys career has crashed and burned. Who's next Lloyd?

The Chicago Bears announced today that they have released safety Adam Archuleta after one year with the team.
Last March the Bears traded their 2007 sixth-round draft pick to the Redskins in exchange for Archuleta, who had just finished a disappointing season in Washington. He played in 15 games for the Bears, starting 10. (The Redskins used the pick to draft quarterback Jordan Palmer.)
Archuleta had his best seasons with the Rams from 2001 to 2005, with Lovie Smith, now the Bears’ head coach, as his defensive coordinator. When Archuleta signed with Chicago, it looked like reuniting with Smith would make it the right fit.
But the Bears apparently felt that Archuleta was expendable because they like the other safeties on the roster, including Mike Brown, Brandon McGowan, Danieal Manning, Kevin Payne and rookie fourth-round draft choice Craig Steltz.
The 30-year-old Archuleta will now be an unrestricted free agent.

Sounds like a great idea, let's bring back the one player most responsible for our deplorable 2006 defense.

Has anyone been paying any attention to doman29's posts?

Let's run through some of the opinions he posted since joining

-Bring Adam Archuleta back to compete for a safety spot

-Trade Betts to Detroit. Pick up Shaun Alexander or Kevin Jones

-Goof Ball Gibbs ruined this team (along with Spurrier) trading for useless players such as...Adam Archuleta

-Give LaVar a camp invite

-Why not LeMar Marshall too

-While we're at it, sign Trotter to a vet min deal or give him a 2 year deal

Fascinating

Dude can't play in the NFL anymore. Time to hang it up.

Re: Bears cut Adam Archuleta

I can see him in Arena Football. Dude can hit, but he cant run. If he was about 100lbs heavier he would be a decent linebacker. Maybe with a shorter feild we wont have to run as fast or he can play Jack LB. Those guys play horizontally instead of vertically. He could be good at that.

Didn't the also pick up his 6mil. contract and saved us from taking the hit on our cap? For once we got the better of the deal in a trade.

Yeah they did take a big hit off our hands. It was $5 mil, but who's counting. That deal was a friggin coup for us.

Good guy, but time to hang it up. And, I don't remember who said it, but we do not need to bring him back here. I think our special teams is just fine without him. We don't need to spend a bunch of money on a guy to play special teams again. Good luck finding a new team, Archuleta.

Fascinating? That's a generous adjective for his posts.

I wonder if he'll suggest Jesse Armstead next. Bring back the 2001 linebacking corps... LOL!

Re: Bears cut Adam Archuleta

Archuleta is not a starting caliber safety, but he's still a serviceable backup. I would guess that Chicago cut Arch for two reasons (1) he isn't a starter and (2) he was being paid like a starter. My guess is he lands somewhere as a #2 SS at the vet. min.

Re: Bears cut Adam Archuleta

Arch is one of my top suspects as a player who was on the juice until he got his big contract and then figured why chance it and stopped sprinkling HGH in his scrambled eggs. Just a hunch, but can anyone else explain why he went from very fast when he was drafted all the way to the opposite end of the spectrum of being too slow to be a full time starter?

I think Archuleta had decent speed, he just wasn't very agile and his read and react cover skills were less than spectacular. Remember when Witten burned him in 2006 at FedEx in the closing seconds of the game? Archuleta bit on a move, got spun around and couldn't catch up to Witten. I think it's safe to say Arch is faster than Witten, but Witten just juked his ass and got by him.

I thought he had a back injury or back problems before we got him.

Re: Bears cut Adam Archuleta

Arch's problem his entire career has been speed, or lack thereof. He's constantly getting burned and always has been. He shoulda swallowed his pride, bulked up a bit, and played OLB. I think this way he would have had a lot more success in this league.

The funny thing is the Bears cut him to make room for the next Archuleta, S Craig Steltz from LSU.

that's true. i really don't know what the bears are doing. i scratched my head at just about every draft pick they made. it's hard to knock them, being that they just went to the superbowl 2 years ago with virtually the same team they had this past season. but they seem like the raiders after they lost the big game to the bucs. like they over-achieved and now they can't remember how.

SAY NO TO THE VET MIN FOR EVERY AVAILABLE PLAYER!!! WHY AM I TYPING IN ALL CAPS? WHY ARE THEIR TWO GREEN LIGHTS ON THE TOP RIGHT PORTION OF THE KEYBOARD?

In all seriousness we frown on people suggesting the veteran minimum. Especially considering that

1) Archuletta is set for life in terms of money

2) Archuletta has a strained relationship with the franchise that would take some major butt kissing to repair. IE Washington is the last place he would sign.

3) Maybe you already up to speed and the vet min comment was a joke and in that case I look like a complete jackass.

See that is what some people think, but it's just not the case. Archuleta ran a 4.37 at his pro day and did 32 reps at 225 at the combine. He literaly blew people away and went from a third round projection to a first round pick. Arch ran around a 4.4 several other times. That is crazy fast for a safety(Laron Landry ran a 4.35 and is considered the fastest safety in the league). It seems that Archuleta left all his speed in St Louis becasue when he got here he looked slow. What's up with that is what I've been saying ever since I saw him in a Redskin or Bears uniform. How can one account for such a dramatic dropoff?

Here is a link for Arch's pro day and combine results.

Well, regardless of his combine numbers, it IS the case. The guy has never been a very good safety. 40 yard dash speed doesn't necessarily translate to football speed. Maybe his lateral speed isn't good. Maybe he isn't as fast in pads. Maybe he has poor reaction time to passes or isn't good at reading the QB. Any way you slice it, he ALWAYS seemed two steps behind every stinkin pass play. So his despite fancy combine numbers, speed is his problem.

I seem to remember everyone raving about his workout prowess when we signed him (me included). That prowess never translated to success on Sunday's for him.

Hey I was just trying to make my point that Archuleta seemingly went from a very fast human being to an average Joe. That makes me feel like he was on performance enhancing something. He was a pretty good safety in St Louis, but at some point his performance level just evaporated even before he ever hit his prime years. It's fishy.

Wasn't trying to jump down your throat, sorry if it came off that way.

He was decent in St. Louis, but certainly not worthy of the biggest contract ever given to a safety (at that time), which we gave him. That further raised the expectations of a guy who was a beast in the weight room and on the track, and average on the field. I wouldn't be surprised if he was juicing as well.
