People dumping in community?
OK, so I live in a small community that is under construction at the moment having trim work on all units repaired, yet some people feel it's their right to dump whatever they wish into the construction dumpsters. Today I saw furniture, a whole living room set, sitting next to the dumpster... this is not allowed by the association, but people do it anyway! It looks like a land fill out there!! Is there anything I can do to stop it legally??

Re: People dumping in community?
Catch them in the act and report them to the HOA. Short of that, probably not.

Um, I'm HOA.. and have been trying to catch them, but what do I do with the damn furniture in the mean time... ??? Wish I could dust for prints.. !!! |
Re: People dumping in community?
lol - I wouldn't touch a couch left at a dumpster for a million bucks. Not even with rubber gloves and a 10 foot brush.
Get a time-lapse camera. Of course, they are probably doing it at night, so you are SOL there. I had this happen to me when we did work on our house. Pissed me off to no end, but there was nothing I could do, because I couldn't be at the house 24/7. |

Re: People dumping in community?
If you have a real HOA then they can impose fines. Otherwise the contruction company will need to catch them and have them remove the trash or face paying for the dumpster by a judge's rule. Other than that I would simply put up some signs that kindly reminds residents that such activity is not allowed and anyone caught will face penalty.

Re: People dumping in community?
they are still building in my neighborhood. so those dumpsters are still here. i see people putting stuff in them all the time. to me, not a big deal. but to lay stuff outside of them, well.... are you sure its coming from the residents?
|
Re: People dumping in community?
can the dumpsters be locked?
|
Re: People dumping in community?
My dad is a production manager for a large home builder in the area and I know he has trouble with this on almost every job site. If he's working in a neighborhood that has a lot of people already living it he practically needs to hire a guard to watch his dumpsters at night.
His other problem is that contractors will sometime steal stuff and hide it in the dumpsters so that they can come back for it later. You wouldn't believe the kind of stuff that gets stolen from construction sites: granite counter tops; custom staircases; sod; sinks; etc. |

If the waste company can't come to empty them more often you get a ton of trash overflowing, or piled up next to the dumpster like Hess said, and eventually ending up all over the neighborhood.

Re: People dumping in community?
This is an entire living room set.. just sitting in the grass next to the dumpster. Too much furniture to lift into dumpster.. And I heard a person just pulled up his truck, unloaded it, and drove off.. GRRRRR!

After reading the thread title, I thought you were talking about a bunch of hippies pooping in the woods together.

I thought this was about low prices of imported goods, that are hurting local businesses. |

It is against the law to dump your trash in a dumpster that does not belong to you. In Virginia this carries up to a $5000 fine and/or up to a 2 year jail sentence, I think. But, unless a cop rolls up on the person in the act, it's a hard one to enforce. But on the bright side, at least they're not burning their old furniture in the front yard as is the practice in some areas of the country. |

While it may be illegal to tape someone without their knowledge(See post above i.e. Trail Cameras) there is nothing that says you can't put a sign up that tells people they are being video taped and violaters will be fined. A giant sign with a camera and red letters will cut down on dumping 50% I bet. |
Re: People dumping in community?
I'd be pretty pissed if someone was constantly dumping in my community!
|
Re: People dumping in community?
Anyone in need of a living room set? ... How the heck am I going to get rid of this stuff? I cannot tell you how much it fires me up to pull into my neighborhood and right smack in front of me is an old couch, chairs, cushions..etc.. sitting on the nice lawn right next to the community mailboxes… ugh!

See...if you had a pic of ....."your" new dining set, I could check it out to see if I like it |
Re: People dumping in community?
Just found this: Illegal Dumping Hotline: 240.777.DUMP . They will actually investigate.. so I put a call in and reported it. Oh, and I'll take a pic of the furniture tonight to those that might be interested.. LOL

Look at that, I remembered something from my social research class in college! |
Re: People dumping in community?
I have to do something... there was a mattress on top of the furniture this morning when I left. I really want to fry someone for this!! GRRRR!
|
Re: People dumping in community?
Where did you say this was located?? I got some things in my garage I need to..........., and a dump friendly enviroment
|
Re: People dumping in community?
panties in a twist over some old junk? why not call to have the dumpster emptied? then, in the very least, if they dont take the furniture, you will have room to get it into the dumpster( assuming its a big construction dumpster) otherwise, why not look into seeing if you can have it moved.

If it were your community and someone was dumping their shi+ all over it you would get your tighty whities is a twist too. I already asked the construction people and they will not remove it, or let me put it into the dumpster, and I've yet to be able to find someone to haul it away that won't cost me money. Having yet another person add the mattress onto the furniture this morning made me angry - not surprising. |
Re: People dumping in community?
I'd say hessy has a valid point in being upset.
|
Re: People dumping in community?
Just set the contents of the dumpster on fire.
The dumpster itself should survive to repeat tomorrow. |
Re: People dumping in community?
hessy, i was joking with you
|
Re: People dumping in community?
Hessy, you need some (cough*cough) help moving all that heavy furniture?
|
Re: People dumping in community?
and we have the dumpsters in my development. but the job foreman keeps them empty. and keeps moving them. so they don't bother people for too long
|
Re: People dumping in community?
I put a FREE sign on it today hoping someone will just take it...... maybe I should put a FOR SALE sign on it when I get home, because then I’m sure it will disappear over night....
Anyway, looks like the end result is the funds will come out of the HOA community fees to have it hauled away. We really have no other choice.... …… That ends our lesson on illegal dumping in MD. |
