Chris Cooley Blog Update - Poker night, whiskey, cigars, and Bon Jovi
Cooley's latest blog update is once again friggin hilarious. Cigars, whiskey, gambling, singing "Living on a Prayer" at the top of his lungs...
I'm a little worried though. His blog is very candid, and he makes no effort to hide his love of the sauce. Don't get me wrong, by reading his blogs I think he and I are pretty similar dudes- work hard play hard- but I really hope his mouth doesn't get him in trouble. He talks about high stakes gambling in casinos with Ryan Boschetti, heavy alcohol consumption, and even throws a little profanity in there. Again, I personally have NO issue whatsoever with what he's doing, and he's breaking no laws, but he's a pro-bowler now, and has a $30M contract. He's under a microscope, and I just don't want to see him catch any heat from the media, which is bound to happen if he keeps it up. Likes to chill, have a cigar, a few beers..He's not out breaking the law, he's having a good time with the boys, nothing wrong with that at all. |
Re: Chris Cooley Blog Update - Poker night, whiskey, cigars, and Bon Jovi
That's gotta be an awesome time. I'm liking him more and more with this blog he's got. I like being able to relate to him. I'm having to fight tooth and nail for my man room. My wife's a huge football fan too, and I've only got a 3 bedroom house. And I'll be damn, if I'm going to have a man room with Dolphins crap hanging on the wall.

Re: Chris Cooley Blog Update - Poker night, whiskey, cigars, and Bon Jovi
I'd be upset if he was drinking heavily during the season, and especially upset if he were doing it the night before games. But in the offseason he should get time to himself to do whatever.
I remember hearing that Riggins used to show up hung over as all get out on Sunday, and then roll out there and kill the other team. If you can perform well in that state, then I guess I can't find a whole lot of fault, except in the back of my head I'll always wonder if you could be performing even better. But until I hear Cooley isn't taking care of his body during the season, I got no beef. |

These guys are allowed to have lives and as we can see they're not much different than your average joe, they just have more money to gamble with. ;) |

Yeah, like I said, if you are hungover and you still perform great, it's kind of hard to have a problem with it, because the bottom line is performance. Of course, keep in mind Portis was 21 in his rookie season. I remember when I was 21 I drank 14 beers the night before a swim meet and went out and blew Old Dominion's sprinters out of the water the next day. When you're 21 it's a lot easier to recover than when you're 28 (my current age)! But hey, as long as the Skins are winning, these guys can do whatever they want. And even if they're losing every game, they can still booze as much as they want in the offseason, as far as I'm concerned. |
Re: Chris Cooley Blog Update - Poker night, whiskey, cigars, and Bon Jovi
This is just an everyday guy having fun. He is a prime example for all NFL players. No one is saying you cant drink and have fun. Just make sure you are somewhere safe with freinds, leave the assault rifle in the closet, and for God sakes if you are out, CALL A CAB!!!. Cooley is a top notch, mostly responsible player and should be used as a role model.

I remember seeing that too. Something to do with a rookie hazing I think. |
Re: Chris Cooley Blog Update - Poker night, whiskey, cigars, and Bon Jovi
I don't think this is wrong at all. I don't see him using a beer bong with a bunch of teenage girls.

Yeah I don't think anyone here thinks he's "wrong." My only concern is that the media is gonna end up ripping him for it. I can just hear Jim Rome "burning" him about late night drinking/poker parties. Fortunately since he's such a likable dude, never gets in any trouble, and performs at a high level, they'll let him have his fun. His latest "Cooley Zone" blog on yahoo sports was pretty good this week (it comes out every Wed.) Don't get me wrong, I love reading it, but it is absolutely foolish for him to be publicly publishing that. All it takes is for him to report to camp 5 pounds over weight, have a few unproductive games, pull a hammy, and he will be crucified for what he wrote. There's no reason for him to be writing it other than to say, "hey everybody, look how cool I am." Does make you wonder where his priorities lie. |
Re: Chris Cooley Blog Update - Poker night, whiskey, cigars, and Bon Jovi
I think Cooley is an established enough of a player where we can be pretty sure he's not going to slack off. He's one of the better TEs in the league, and to date there has been zero questions regarding his work ethic or on the field production. If anyone has a problem with his blog you must be really bored, uptight, or out of touch with reality. A guy is playing cards, smoking stoagies, and having a few pops with his buddies during the offseason. God forbid.

Re: Chris Cooley Blog Update - Poker night, whiskey, cigars, and Bon Jovi
I just hope that Cooley takes care of himself. He has been a thrill to watch and we all want him to play as long as he possibly can. I know that he's not the first pro athlete to get loaded, but advertising it is a bit amateur. I love the story about the Hogs and Riggo meeting up in a shed after practice and throwin a few back. I love it even more how Theismann wasn't allowed to be there. I've also heard that John Riggins could be found at the Vienna Inn, well past midnight on gameday!! It seems like all of the old baseball players were drunks and many of them played drunk from time to time. Vlade Divac supposedly smoked close to a pack a day during his playing days in the NBA. I guess lungs aren't really that important when it comes to basketball! The most incredible story has to be Dock Ellis pitching a no-hitter on LSD: LSD and the No-Hitter . While this kind of stuff is fun to talk about, it's probably not a good idea for Cooley to promote it himself, since he makes a ton of money to stay in excellent shape and play football. If he keeps playing like he has though, I won't jump on him for it. Oh yeah, he shouldn't let it be known that "Captain Chaos" listens to Bon Jovi either.

Then again, it may be a good idea for Cooley, as he is drawing an awful lot of attention to himself and is suddenly becoming a fan favorite outside of DC. This will certainly help sell a lot of Cooley jerseys. You can almost imagine his agent writing it for him... |
Re: Chris Cooley Blog Update - Poker night, whiskey, cigars, and Bon Jovi
Cooley cracks me up, going all in with a Jack/9. The whiskey had nothing to do with that ;-)

Re: Chris Cooley Blog Update - Poker night, whiskey, cigars, and Bon Jovi
I am very concerned about the Bon Jovi. SLAYER! SLAYER! SLAYER! He's a pro bowler now, he needs to hard core it up!

Re: Chris Cooley Blog Update - Poker night, whiskey, cigars, and Bon Jovi
Some of you are being ridiculous about this. No where in the blog does it say anything about getting wasted, hammered, sloshed or any other synonyms for drunk. Chris is just telling a stories of his life and just the mention of whisky or beer means he's now a drunk? Ya'll sound like a bunch of mormans from Utah on here. Give it a break. It is fun, real, and if you didn't notice, Chris is still working his ass off in the weight room. Watch the videos.

Exactly. Cooley has never shown any indication that he isn't a hard worker. He's entitled to have his fun. |

Yeah I actually watched those. Inspired me to do a brutal leg workout today at the gym. I'll be feeling it tomorrow fo sho. I don't think anyone said he's a drunk. Hell, I love to tip a few more than occasionally and I certainly don't consider myself a drunk. The blog does mention "inebriation" a few times, which is in fact a synonym for being wasted. Pretty much everyone on here has no problem with what he's doing. I just don't want to see the media rip the guy. He and Sellers have become my favorite Redskins (RIP Sean). I didn't start this thread to rag on Cools, I just know how the media loves to tear up athletes, and I don't want that to happen to Chris. |

I never quite got how athletes could/would do that before a game. |

stick around here long enough and you'll see that people make big deals out of nothing all the time. |

Well said. It's funny, you can clearly see people fishing for an argument that isn't here. Cooley is everyone's favorite Redskin. It is just clear that this will someday be used against him. |

Cooley rocks. Work hard, play hard. After all these self-righteous athletes (Clemens, i.e) BSing about their lives, it's refreshing to hear one tell the truth.
Keep rocking, Captain Chaos. |
