Redskins sign second year safety Justin Hamilton

I don't know anything about this guy, other than what I read and he didn't play last year. But it appears depth at the safety position is something we are actively pursuing. And I do agree with the search we need to find solid depth at the safety position.

Interesting....who did we let go to pick him up?

It is in the article who was released.

To make room for Hamilton on the roster, the Redskins released defensive back Stephen Tate, an undrafted rookie.

"Hamilton is expected to be on hand as the Redskins resume OTAs on June 2."
I thought the last line in this article was amusing. I'm glad he was just signed and expected to show up in 3 days. I don't know anything about him but why was he out last year? Injuries or just the fact that the Browns secondary was crappy in 05? Anyone? Happy for the depth and bring on OTAs and Training Camp then Canton. Im ready.

Re: Redskins sign second year safety Justin Hamilton

I dont understand why they signed this guy, when Doss and Schweigert are out there. Vinny Cerrato already said that we are not interested in Doss. His reasoning was that we have two draft choices that are safties and we wont be able to take all the safties on the roster to camp.

Re: Redskins sign second year safety Justin Hamilton

Hamilton is big 6-3 and 222 pounds. Looks like they are trying to add someone with size. Doss is small for a safety. Doughty is good but kind of skinny. I do not think this guy will beat out Reed Doughty for a starting position, but he is a change of pace.

I'm going to say that this guy won't make the roster, but there's no harm in bringing in a guy to push Chris Horton a little to earn his roster spot.

here's the link to his full stats:

1 year as a nothing, 1 year as a part time WR, 1 year as a part time RB, 1 year as a part time DB... nothing impressive besides his size i guess. doesn't really seem like a guy worth writing a press release about.

What a freakin joke. Another great pickup by the current front office/talent evaluators. This is pathetic. Players continue to be selected the way, which is by an incompetent committee who considers draft picks to be irrelevant. Doesn't seem like anything is gonna change in the FO.

Okay, sarcasm font off.

For the record, the above comments were made about the signing of Chris Wilson:

He's a warm body, but don't see him making final roster. Only way he makes the team is if he excels on special teams in preseason.

Re: Redskins sign second year safety Justin Hamilton

Interesting pickup. He was really highly regarded as a RB when he first came to VT. If I had to say one thing about him is that he had good overall football skills. The coaches moved him to WR to get him playing time due to a crowded RB backfield. He moved to safety the next year due to inexperience at that position. Basically, he's a good enough athlete to play where the team needs him most. He may not have put up the amazing eyepopping stats that most people covet but he did play solid and selflessly when called upon. A good team-first guy to have...if he can play at the pro level which I have no idea.

its gotten to a point that if the redskins listened to people around here, they would only sign washed up 30 something year olds. of course, at the vet minimum

Re: Redskins sign second year safety Justin Hamilton

I love this signing!

If you do a search you'll find that a few of us discussed him as a potential late round pick a couple years ago.

724 summed up most of his college career, this guy is a great athlete & team player. Very smart & well spoken as well. The coaches at VT were always looking for a spot where he could get playing time. They probably made a mistake by trying to play him as a rb right out of high school as he was tall & ran too straight up, but was no Eddie George. He was a decent wr, but when they moved him to safety he cracked the starting lineup as a senior.

That might not sound too impressive to the avg. fan, but think about it. How many players can play only 1 year at a position in college & still get an nfl job as a rookie at that position? I know he didn't play last year, don't know why. Probably wasn't picked up by anybody.

I think his range in coverage is going to be his problem, unless he's improved greatly. He's no lock to make the team by any means, but one thing is for sure, he can play special teams. The same has been said about K. Moore too. Actually the two of these guys have a lot in common it sounds like, only Hamilton is bigger.

He'll be hungry, so there will be good competition at safety in camp.

Re: Redskins sign second year safety Justin Hamilton

I really think the reason they picked him up is because he has NFL experience...outside of our starting safetys....who only have 1 year experience....we've got no experience with our safety depth.

This guy played several games and knows the speed of the NFL...rookies dont know that yet, and they are lower draft picks to boot. We really should have an experienced backup safety on the final roster....I think maybe this is what they are trying to do...but this guy is a stretch at that attempt.

He was released late preseason last year....he had an ankle injury.
He was likely average at best.

I wouldn't be suprised if they continue to keep their eyes open for an aging vet to get cut late in preseason for safety....and of course, LB, CB, Dline too.

Very true dmek. I'm glad you didn't leave out the 'vet minimum' as thats very important.

honestly, i do remember mentioning him (i think) in his draft season. there's a good chance he can plays teams for us, but i don't think he'll be playing too much on normal downs...

Out of our 2008 Undrafted free agent class of 13 players. We picked up two linebackers, both with good size.

Curtis Gatewood OLB, 6'3" 248lbs, Vanderbilt
Bryan Wilson LB, 6'3" 250lbs, Morgan State

Tear yourself away from the computer, too much searching for arcane bits of knowledge and scraps of informations leads to impotency (or is it celibacy?).

SS is a great value pickup. he's a suitable, but not great, starter. more of a tackler than a coverage guy, but he's better than doughty right now... same sort of player though (and at 26, he can give us at least 3 good years).

the fact that landry can cover the entire deep field solo means that working with a limited coverage safety really isn't a big deal at all.

Skins sign rookie safety Chris Horton. Release Justin Hamilton, that was short lived.

Redskins Sign Seventh-Round Pick Horton
By Gary Fitzgerald
Redskins.com
June 12, 2008

The Redskins have signed rookie safety Chris Horton, the team announced on Thursday. Horton was the Redskins' seventh-round draft pick in last April's NFL Draft.

To make room for Horton on the roster, the Redskins released safety Justin Hamilton.

Horton, who played college football at UCLA under former Redskins defensive backs coach DeWayne Walker, was the 249th overall selection in the draft.

The 6-1, 216-pounder started every game the past two seasons at UCLA. He finished his college career with 238 tackles (160 solo), three sacks, four interceptions and three forced fumbles.

As a senior last year, Horton finished second on UCLA's defense with 90 tackles (64 solo). In 2006, he led the defense with 95 tackles (64 solo).

Horton grew up in New Orleans.
