Strahan Retires.................
Coming Off Super Bowl Win, Strahan To Retire
by Jay Glazer Jay Glazer is a Senior NFL Writer for FOXSports.com on MSN and also appears every week on FOX NFL Sunday as the network's NFL Insider. Updated: June 9, 2008, 10:17 AM EST The New York Giants will begin their road to a defense of their Super Bowl title when mini-camp begins on Wednesday. That defense, however, will be attempted without the services of their team leader Michael Strahan. After a lengthy and — for Strahan — up-and-down decision-making process, Strahan said he's hanging up the cleats and wanted to finalize a decision before his teammates gathered for their mini-camp. For months fans, other players and his own teammates have wondered whether he would return or not. |
Re: Strahan Retires.................
Good for him. He went out on top. And I'm glad we don't have to face him twice a year anymore.
|
Re: Strahan Retires.................
Was expecting this!
|
Re: Strahan Retires.................
Strahan was a great player. Hands down hall of famer and seemingly a pretty good guy.
We'll be seeing him on TV shortly. |
Re: Strahan Retires.................
Good call on his part.
He's got a ring and a Hall of Fame resume. No sense in riding it out any further. |
Re: Strahan Retires.................
He had a really good season last year and the giants won the SB. Couldn't think of a better way to call it quits.
Glad we don't have to deal with him anymore. That does leave a pretty big void at DE for the giants, who's next in line? |
Re: Strahan Retires.................
He knew he wouldn't be able to beat out Wynn in camp :)

Yea good point no way MS could have beat out RW or Tuck........:goodjob: ESPN - Giants DE Strahan to retire after 15 years, seven Pro Bowls - NFL |
Re: Strahan Retires.................
Good for him. I guess Fox made him a pretty decent offer.
|
Re: Strahan Retires.................
I think he changes his mind after training camp is just about over and comes back for another season and another 6 to 8 mill. If I'm corect he is still hurting a little for cash after his wife got most of his in their div. and he still has something left in his tank. He just does not want to spend the time in camp and playing those waist of time preseason games (thats is a waist of time for a vet D lineman). I've been wrong before.
|
Re: Strahan Retires.................
I'll be glad to see him on Fox or CBS but I won't believe it till September 4 and I don't see him out there
|
Re: Strahan Retires.................
I'm sure we'll be seeing him on t.v. this year, possibly Fox because Fox handles all the NFC battles. Speaking of battles he used to have some epic ones back in the day with Jansen when Jansen was healthy. I'm glad we don't have to face him twice a year anymore too. He's easily a HOFer in my book and he'll just be solidifying that with his career in t.v. lol.
|
Re: Strahan Retires.................
I agree w/those that said he got a good offer from fox or cbs. Maybe he was negotiating w/them last year & the deal wasn't good enough so he came back & played?
Good decision IMO, get out on top w/your health. He had a great career, but Jansen did usually get the best of him. I really don't remember him coming close to wreaking havoc on us the way LT did. Nonetheless, at the least, his presence on that team will be missed & that's good for us. This is just the beginning of what will be a rough 08 for the g men! |
Re: Strahan Retires.................
Thank God. I was hoping he would after finally winning A SB.

On a side note isn't he dating Eddie Murphy's ex wife?? I keep seeing him with her on TV. She is smokin. |

yeah,,,,I was thinking the same thing!:laughing2:food-smil |
Re: Strahan Retires.................
I hope we don't see more of him on TV...I personally thought that he would stay on and keep playing for the Giants for two reasons...
1) NFL Dental Plan 2) Child Support Payments Zing! I'm out bitches... |
Re: Strahan Retires.................
Good for him. I'm glad we're not going to face him again, but the Giants still have Umenyiora, Tuck, and Kiwanuka. That's a nice trio of ends (although I'm not sure if Kiwanuka will line up at LB or DE).

Re: Strahan Retires.................
EGG'Z AND GRIT'Z AH!!!! Hellava player, he will be missed by some. But, I'm glad he's not on the G-men's squad anymore.

CBS TO MAKE A BIG PUSH FOR STRAHAN? Posted by Mike Florio on June 10, 2008, 10:12 a.m. At a time when many assume that Giants defensive end Michael Strahan will land with FOX, a media source has shared with us rumors that CBS wants Strahan badly. At CBS, Strahan would join the pregame show, and he likewise would also be a fixture on Inside the NFL, which will be produced by CBS Sports and which will air on CBS-owned Showtime. The thinking is that Strahan, James Brown, and Phil Simms would be the primary lineup on Inside the NFL. As to the CBS pregame gig, the person who should be the most nervous is Shannon Sharpe, who clearly is the weakest link in that specific chain. If Strahan supplants Sharpe, he’d be the second former Giant to send one of the Sharpes into unemployment. A year ago, Tiki Barber’s arrival on NBC’s Football Night in America resulted in Sterling Sharpe being displaced. Meanwhile, another source with a certain amount of reliable knowledge regarding the situation tells us that our speculation regarding the possibility that Strahan would return to the Giants is on the mark. “If they were to pay him, he would go back,” the source said. “Their idea of taking care of him was $6 million. That wasn’t his idea of it.” This thing would get very interesting if the Giants were to make a run at Strahan after he strikes a deal with CBS, FOX, or some other media company. |

Fear not, you now have Umenyiora, Tuck (the REAL MVP if XLII), and Kiwanuka to give you nightmares!!!!!! My two best Strahan memories happened during his last game. During a pre-game team huddle he gave a little pep talk, "Everybody is talking about their dynasty. Well, OUR DYNASTY STARTS TONIGHT!!!!!" After New England went up 14-10, he was on the sidelines talking to the OLine, "The final score is going to be 17-14. Ya' hear me? SEVENTEEN FOURTEEN!" |
Re: Strahan Retires.................
Tuck is a dominant pass rushing end, and we all know how good Uminoyra is doing. I think the Giants will miss Strahan, but even without him, I still think they have the best defense in the NFL, fwiw.
I do think it will be their offense and special teams that will prevent them from repeating as SB Champs. |

Re: Strahan Retires.................
I find it hard to say the Giants have the best D in the league considering their secondary. Top 10 D no doubt, but tops in the league?
In terms of yards given up the Giants were just slightly better than the Redskins last year (305 - 305.3), and they were actually worse in terms of points given up per game (21.9 - 19.4). |

The Giants had a bad secondary through most of last year, but outside of Sam Madison (who is probably a liability at this point), they were a young, vastly improved team in the playoffs. Based on what I know about young defensive players, the Giants are very likely to carry that performance into this season. Undoubtably, they performed better than any other defense in the playoffs last season, so thats my basis for thinking they are the best team this year. Anyway, Eli's maturity is probably for real, but even so, it's hard not to think that he was playing totally over his head in the playoffs. He'll be better, but I don't think the Giants will seperate from the pack offensively. |

The Giants had a great playoff run, mostly due to Eli not turning the ball over. Playing the Bucs - no offense, Cowboys - 2nd year of playoff chokes or Jessica's Curse, Packers - Favre back to his old "INTs in critical situations" ways, and Pats - NY played a great game. Statistically NY was pedestrian or worse last season in Pts Allowed, Yards Allowed, Yards per Play, Turnovers, Passing TDs (12th not bad), Rushing TDs. They were first in sacks, but don't underestimate the attention Strahan brought, allowing Osi & Tuck to get favorable match ups. With Strahan's retirement, I guarantee the sack production falls out of the top ten. What has NY done to get better in the off-season on defense? They drafted Kenny Phillips who will take a year or two to learn the NFL, another DB in the second and a couple of LBs. No major FAs unless I am missing someone. Strahan is now gone, Madison is a year older and slowing down. Without digging through depth charts and stats, here are a few teams that are outright better on D than NY: Steelers, Bucs, Patriots, Chargers, Cowboys, Packers, Eagles, Jaguars, Colts. |
I'm with him,how come?
Because I am the greatest. As for the Giants D. In their first 2 1/2 games, they were God-Awful. They tightened up during the 2nd half of the first 'skins game. Then they were inconsistent the rest of the way until the Buffalo game in week 16. They started poorly, were down 14-0, then blew them out. Should have beaten New England in week 17 and just turned it up in the play-offs. They started making the big play, ie key interceptions, getting off the field on 3rd down, which was their BIGGEST problem the past 3 years. Gave up WAAAAAY too many 3rd and Long's. The goal has to be to win 10 games, get in the play-offs and defend the title from there. |
