With Gibbs out of the picture who is now the face of the Redskins' franchise?

re: With Gibbs out of the picture who is now the face of the Redskins' franchise?
I kind of still think Joe Gibbs is still the face of the franchise... and will be for the foreseeable future.
I guess it all depends on your definition of what the face of the franchise actually is. I kind of take it is the first person you think of when you here the word "Redskins". As far as an active person, I'd go with Dan Snyder. I think the Sean Taylor tragedy kind of reinforced that notion. |
re: With Gibbs out of the picture who is now the face of the Redskins' franchise?
I think Gibbs is who people most often relate to the franchise, I remember in one of these posts, counting down the best franchises in the NFL, they said the face of our franchise was Gibbs. However, now that he's gone, I think CP is trying to solidify his place as that new beacon. I believe the FO wants him there too. By asking him to stay and work over the entire offseason, and be the team leader, as well as his constant appearances on Eastern Motors commercials and the spot he did on NFL Network last night. It just seems that the new face is CP

re: With Gibbs out of the picture who is now the face of the Redskins' franchise?
I went with CP. he seems to have embraced that role this offseason. Last night on TA he even mentioned playing in the preseason  and seemed ok with that.
|
re: With Gibbs out of the picture who is now the face of the Redskins' franchise?
I'm going with Portis too. He seems to have matured a bit and has taken on the responsibility of being more of a team leader.
|
re: With Gibbs out of the picture who is now the face of the Redskins' franchise?
I put Cooley. He's on the upswing of his career, and he's a unique and charismatic guy. I would love to say Campbell, but he seems so uncomfortable in front of the camera.
|
re: With Gibbs out of the picture who is now the face of the Redskins' franchise?
Portis is the best known active Redskins player, but I think Snyder is the person most younger people think of when they hear about our team. Think of it, how many times have you read an article that said something like, "Although Snyder is known for wild free agent spending sprees, this offseason...." Snyder is the official whipping boy of most league observers.

Don't forget Joe Gibbs is still on as a consultant -- a role that will likely increase dramatically when the season gets going. |
Don't forget Joe Gibbs is still on as a consultant -- a role that will likely increase dramatically when the season gets going.
Don't kid yourself. Gibbs is no more of a consultant than you or I.
|
re: With Gibbs out of the picture who is now the face of the Redskins' franchise?
I don't see Gibbs playing much of a significant role as a "consultant". I think he'll always be there for Snyder as a resource, but I seriously doubt that his role is very in depth or involved.

re: With Gibbs out of the picture who is now the face of the Redskins' franchise?
As high profile as the owner is, he's never going to get the type of air time or respect that the players will.
Portis is currently the face of the franchise. That might change within a year, but there's no doubt in my mind that right now, no player is more identifiable with Washington football then Clinton Portis. I was watching a replay of the Wild Card Colts-Broncos from 2003, and it seemed almost weird to see Portis playing for someone else. |
re: With Gibbs out of the picture who is now the face of the Redskins' franchise?
Portis is the face of the franchise. He's the engine that makes the offense go, he's the person that most commentators refer to when talking about the key players, he's the main interview that networks want when doing something referring to the Redskins.
Campbell could be the guy, but he's not camera comfortable yet. Cooley is too goofy and not controversial. Zorn hasn't proven anything yet. Snyder has too much 'stink' on him to be the face of the franchise. |
re: With Gibbs out of the picture who is now the face of the Redskins' franchise?
To us it may be Portis, but by definition the face of the franchise is who any typical American would think of when the current skins are brought up.
That face is Danny. |
re: With Gibbs out of the picture who is now the face of the Redskins' franchise?
IMO the face of the franchise has got to be Clinton Portis. He's regarded as the best and most popular player on the team.
|
re: With Gibbs out of the picture who is now the face of the Redskins' franchise?
I don't think it's one person, but three.
Portis, Cooley, and Campbell. I think they respectively contribute to the team's public imagine in very different, yet almost equal ways. Each brings a different slice of persona to the Redskins as an organization. All three are very visible players, and while Campbell isn't as vocal as Cooley or Portis, clearly the franchise falls or rises with Campbell's fortunes this year. |

That face is Danny.
I agree. If I didn't know the Redskins very well, I'd think of the name I hear in the news that's most often associated with the Skins; and that's more than likely Dan Snyder. (Now that Gibbs is gone) |
re: With Gibbs out of the picture who is now the face of the Redskins' franchise?
During the offseason its Danny, but during the season its Portis.
I'm going to throw a wrench in there and say that this coming year Cooley will be play more of a part in the face of the franchise. With his blog and other activities this offseason I'm starting to hear about him on national news services. Yahoo posts every new blog that he writes on the front page of their NFL tab. Cooley seems as if he's going to play a bigger part as Redskins spokesman this year. |
re: With Gibbs out of the picture who is now the face of the Redskins' franchise?
come on the face is Danny Boy hands down...Anyone who knows football knows who Dan Snyder is. Portis is a close second.
|
re: With Gibbs out of the picture who is now the face of the Redskins' franchise?
I think we would all like to have it as Portis, but it's Snyder. The face of a franchise goes beyond the field. Portis is great, but he's not a top 3 RB, therefore he is not the face.
I don't like that it's Snyder, but it is. Someone mentioned that it's still Gibbs, and I can go with that. Gibbs has the best reputation of any redskin, and that should remain for a while. |

I don't like that it's Snyder, but it is.
Another reason why it's probably Danny is the amount of turnover that we have in our coaching ranks, players and otherwise. It pretty much makes him the only constant as far as the franchise goes. |
re: With Gibbs out of the picture who is now the face of the Redskins' franchise?
CP is pretty popular...but I think that Cooley has more potential to have the impact that John Riggins would of had if he were more vocal like Cooley is. Cooley will become more and more popular because he is a likable cat. Plus his blog and writing for Yahoo. What more can you want?
...besides his smokin hot wife. |
re: With Gibbs out of the picture who is now the face of the Redskins' franchise?
It's Clinton Portis. No doubt. Zorn and Co. basically asked him to play that role in the offseason. Team leader very often equals face of the franchise. And the past few days he's been co-hosting on NFL Network, debuting 4 new characters and talking on the phone with Chad Johnson. I think he's primed for a very big year, and the Redskins and media seem to think so as well.

HA!) |
re: With Gibbs out of the picture who is now the face of the Redskins' franchise?
I think for anyone living outside DC and not really a Skins fan the face of the team is Snyder. They might have a vague clue who plays QB or some other position but they all know that Snyder owns the team. Like it or not, he's the face of the franchise.

I think an argument can be made that the face of the franchise, particularly to the lay fan, is Sean Taylor. |
re: With Gibbs out of the picture who is now the face of the Redskins' franchise?
I voted Dan Snyder. When the media talks about the Redskins, it's obviously Dan Snyder's team. Portis is the most marketable player on the team but when you talk about the Redskins, you can't do so without mentioning Dan Snyder. He is as recognizable as Jerry Jones of the Cowboys and Al Davis of the Raiders.

I just dont see the lay fan accepting a dead player as the face of the franchise. I'm not even certain the lay fan remembers ST's name let alone what team he played for. They remember a player was murdered last season but I suspect they have only a hazy recollection of his name. |
re: With Gibbs out of the picture who is now the face of the Redskins' franchise?
Taylor was a pretty well known player, I really doubt that his name has already been forgotten by the common fan.

To be clear, when I say "lay fan" I'm talking more so about NFL fans that aren't diehard Redskins fans. I'm sure any NFL fan still remembers Sean Taylor. |

Just an FYI, there have been a few customers that came into my store to buy some jerseys (dallas / arizona and Pittsburgh jerseys to be exact) and when they knew I was a Skins fan they asked, "hey wasn't that guy that was killed on the skins?" I said yeah, but not a one said his name. I think a lot of Redskins fans underestimate the fact that Redskins fans are often NFL fans and know a lot of the players. Other teams fans seem to be more focused on their own team and often could care less what other teams do. In short, NFL fans likely know who Taylor was since he was a pro bowler, but the average fan very likely doesn't remember him cause they didn't follow football very well. Especially considering he was a defensive player, and the common fans know the main offensive players (QB, RB, WR). Keep in mind, most of you live in a football town. The majority of the country does not. |

Very true, and look at how the media reacted to Snyder's think first approach to the offseason! I have heard many times how the free agent market is usually where Dan Snyder likes to play, but he chose not to this year. They expect Snyder to make moves. You can always see the face of the organization when the season is not going on. |

If we're talking about the casual fan type who might watch a game here and there, then yeah he/she might not know Taylor by name. If we're talking about a passionate NFL fan regardless of team I find it hard to believe they wouldn't know him by name. |

I was definitely thinking the same thing, but I'm gonna label him as the guardian angel of the franchise. So many little things happened on the field after he passed away- random gusts of wind, winning by 21 in our last game against Dallas, and our winning streak just to make the playoffs to name a few- that convinced me he's watching over the team. |

A passionate nfl fan is not average. |

So do you think the majority of NFL fans are just the casual type who don't follow it all that closely? If so I'd really have to disagree with that. I think most NFL fans are pretty passionate and the casual types are more in the minority. |

If so I'd really have to disagree with that. I think most NFL fans are pretty passionate and the casual types are more in the minority.
IMO, passionate fans buy lots of gear, and never miss a game no matter what. IMO, the fan buys gear once in awhile and watches most of the games but if something better comes up will go and do it. IMO, the casual fan almost never buys gear and watches games if the game is getting buzz but otherwise doesnt really watch. By those definitions I believe the fan is in the majority, the casual fan is next. I think passionate fans get most of the photos and coverage but in the big picture are in the minority. |

I think most football fans probably know who Taylor was and probably more so since his death. |
re: With Gibbs out of the picture who is now the face of the Redskins' franchise?
What are we asking when we say "face of the franchise" Is it the person who we want to represent the team, is it who the most well known person is? There is a difference. On the one hand, a fan (average or not) might associate Chad Johnson with the Bengals, but the Bengals themselves and their fans might say "No, Carson Palmer is the face of this franchise. He represents who we truly are"
