We need competition for Suisham
I cant understand why we didnt get any compitition for Suisham. i mean last night he missed yet another field goal. I can say his kickoffs were much improved but his accuracy is just not quite there. You would think after a full year as kicker last year his accuracy would have improved but it seems to be the same old problem with kickers we always have. i guess we will have to wait and see what happens. Hopefully not to many games will come down to his leg and we can get more TDs from Campbell and crew!!!
Hail skins!! |
re: We need competition for Suisham
It's the 80 man roster limit. Two kickers would take up too much space. Back in the day ( a year or so ago), he would definitely be competing for a job.
|
re: We need competition for Suisham
Suisham's fine. He just missed 1 kick!!! Granted it was a chip shot but you cant bring in competiton just after 1 miss. If he continues to miss kicks then bring someone in but not now.
|
re: We need competition for Suisham
Still, he has missed easy field goals in his last two games, if you include the loss to Seattle. I know this was the first game, but it'd be terrible to see him miss another chip shot.
|
re: We need competition for Suisham
I am sure he is on a close watch. Kickers get cut all the time. If he slips up too much he will be gone.
|
re: We need competition for Suisham
I heard Doc Walker say that teams like to have at least two kickers in training camp to make sure your main guy doesn't wear his leg out before the end of August.
But yes, in my mind, Suisham shouldn't be regarded so highly to the point that he's somehow above competition. Mark Mosley had competition for crying out loud. |
re: We need competition for Suisham
I was surprised to see a couple kickoffs make it to the Goal line. Also remeber that Suisham was working with a new holder (Brooks).
|
re: We need competition for Suisham
I also would not mind seeing competition for Suisham, and he might just get some. He has to be solid this season, we can't be coming away with a blank inside the 40, those should be automatic.
I'm sure his comfort level isn't that high at this moment. He did in fairness do well on kickoffs, has to improve his consistency on field goals. Those three's are crucial! I'm sure the coaching staff will be keeping a very close eye on his performance this pre-season, hopefully he will step it up and do fine....we'll see. |
Re: We need competition for Suisham
He was pretty solid last year. I think he's going to be fine.
|
Re: We need competition for Suisham
I have been an advocate for Suisham for a long time and think he is a solid kicker. However, everytime he gets on the field I definitely get a nervous feeling in gut. It wouldn't be a bad idea to go a head and bring in a kicker to compete just to put a little pressure on him.
Lets see how Frost does in the next game and if he tanks, cut him, give the job to Brooks and bring in a FG kicker to compete. Or cut devine...he serves no purpose on this team. What would guys think if they contact vanderjackt? Maybe he isn't a head case anymore. |
Re: We need competition for Suisham
"Shazaam" will be fine. Brooks had a bad hold the other night.
|
Re: We need competition for Suisham
anyone have the stats from last year? i thought Suisham was more then adequate last season

LACES OUT!!! |
Re: We need competition for Suisham
ha! even if Brooks wasnt at fault I still blame the rookie.
|
Re: We need competition for Suisham
He was 29/35...not too shabby!
|
Re: We need competition for Suisham
Durant Brooks is the reason there is no competition for Suisham in camp. No reason to have 2 Punters and 2 Kickers taking up space on the 80 man roster.
Anyways, Suisham will be fine. He missed one kick, in the 1st preseason game. Why is it that every time a kicker misses one FG, there is a lynch mob waiting to take care of business? |
Re: We need competition for Suisham
Wonder if Brooks can do kickoffs... :D

But you are absolutely right, no way can you have 2 punters and and 2 kickers taking up space. Maybe if the Brooks Frost story ends early well see something. There's a big GT fan I work with and he says Travis Bell was awsome too. When reading about Brooks you hear his name, as the 2 formed the best kicking duo in college. Maybe well give him a look if Durant can end this thing early. |
Re: We need competition for Suisham
I wouldn't be surprised if Frost is cut very soon. I think Zorn wanted to see Brooks kick in an actual game to make sure he didn't freeze up and he was obviously fine the other night. He was booming them in pre-game warmups too.
|
Re: We need competition for Suisham
If Suish misses one or two more, we'll see them bring in some competition, IMO. But as of yet, there's not enough data. He was good for us last year, but that miss in Seattle hurt, and kicking is a very mental thing. So he's got to show he's back to the level.
Hopefully, he'll get on track and this will be a non-issue. |
Re: We need competition for Suisham
I like Suisham alot. But, let's face it, he is not in any way in the upper tier of NFL kickers. That is precisely why I was kind of surprised he came into camp with no competition.

Not great numbers. |
Re: We need competition for Suisham
When Suisham keeps missing chip shots in preseason then you bring in competition, but its way too early to start bringing in people to compete with Suisham.

Why? Everyone else on the roster has competition. |
Re: We need competition for Suisham
29/35 for the year and he only missed 1 kick in the HOF game. Yeah it was a chip shot but who else would you get to compete with?
|

How about someone that has the leg to kick a FG from 50 or more. (0 50+ attempts last year, and only 1 fg from 50+ in his short career) |
Re: We need competition for Suisham
Ok so where's this competition supposed to come from?
And I don't want to hear Vanderjagt. |

There was just a bunch of college kickers not drafted across the country, and there was a bunch last year too, and the year before etc....are you seriously saying that there are no kickers out there??? Last I checked, we are not experts on kickers...nor are we scouts...but last I checked, the Redskins employs alot of scouts...ask them where we could find a few. Anyone will work. No one is saying to get a hall of famer to compete, just competition. Competition has never been a bad thing...ever. |

We can't have our kicker miss chip shots, and last season that FG that Suisham missed could have changed the game. Maybe give him another shot...but if he misses another get some competition. I mean how much of a non-pressure situation was that field goal he missed during the HOF game? |
Re: We need competition for Suisham
Suisham is fine I just wish we could get someone to drive the kickoffs into the end zone consistently. Too many of his balls last year only made it to the 10 yard line.

Who's out there that could potentially come in and take the job?? Because with such a limited roster now you can't afford to just have competitions for the heck of it. |

Suisham really needed some competition. |

Who should we have cut at the begining of camp to make space for a mock competition? |
Re: We need competition for Suisham
Suisham and I exchanged some emails after the season ended and we talked about him doing a chat with us. We were all set to chat right after the draft. And then I never heard from him. Haven't heard from him since. So yeah, the punk's gotta go :)
Anyhow, I think he'll be fine this year. But there are times where he needs to step it up to near exceptional. |

lol a mock competition. Zorn: Hey Shaun we're going to bring in another kicker for camp. SS: Ok coach, guess I need to step it up to win the job. Zorn: Nah, this is just a mock competition. In fact we're bringing in a trained donkey, because any competition is better than no competition. We're also thinking of bringing in a different fan each day to compete with you, since anybody will do. :silly: |
Re: We need competition for Suisham
kickers are so important in this league. they are the highest scorers on their teams yet the skins have paid little attention to addressing our need for an nfl leg. dont throw stats at me, we all know shazaam needs to add some consistent length to his kickoffs and he is not reliable past the 40 and we dont even attempt 50 yarders with him.
we are not a 13-3 team that can ignore the importance of a good kicker. we are a team that is one win or loss away from making the playoffs and a kicker determines at least 1 game a year. atleast once or twice this year a game will come down to whether shazaam makes or misses a kick with less than a minute to go, i just hope its inside the 40. i wonder if the skins figured they couldnt make roster space to have a competition for both kicker and punter so after review decided punter was the spot that needed competition? either way, shazaam isnt horrible but thats about as big a compliment as i can give him right now. as long as all our field goals to win it are inside the 40, we should be alright. go skins! |

Here are a few contenders we can bring into camp:

come on now...there are plenty of players we could have cut first. How about when Daniels went down DAY 1, he CREATED a spot by his injury. Hmmm, should I go on? I'll keep going cause you guys clearly don't get it. How about the fact that we have 3 FB's on the roster right now (Sellers, Broughton, and Schmitt)? Yeah they are more important. How about Chris Horton? Or Kevin Huntley who will NEVER see the field? Or Patrick Ghee? There are 5 for instances. You are seriously saying that 1- competition is bad, 2- Suisham has done well enough to deserve no competition, and 3- no one out there could possibly be better even though Suisham sucks on kickoffs, and can't hit from 50+! If any position needs competition it's kicker. To assume there is no one to cut...well that's just the definition of close minded. Obviously by bringing in no competition the SKins feel they have the answer at kicker. Some of us feel otherwise. I hope suisham proves us wrong. Suisham is not Vinateiri, or a top 10 kicker, even a top 15 kicker, possibly not even a top 20-25 kicker. So why did he not deserve competition? ps- just cause matty makes a comment, doesn't make it gold, you don't have to be a sheep and follow his every word. baaaaaah. |

He was definitely in the top 15 in most categories.
