The 5-foot-7, 210-pounder is coming off a solid season as fullback and short-yardage specialist. He also started three games at tailback because of injuries to Trung Canidate and Ladell Betts and finished with a career-high 411 rushing yards and a team-high four rushing touchdowns on 107 carries.
However, fullbacks are rarely used in Coach Joe Gibbs's two-tight end offense. So the 5-foot-7 Cartwright has shed weight, from 223 to 210, while attempting to make the roster as a tailback.

Cartwright could be a reserve tailback utilized in short-yardage and goal-line situations. Cartwright feels that he's a natural tailback after playing the position at Trinity Valley Community College before transferring to Kansas State, where he switched to fullback.

"I've run the ball my whole life," he said. "Once I got to college they started playing me at fullback and a little bit of running back. I'm not unfamiliar with the position."

How is Cartwright selling himself to Gibbs?

"I'm a versatile back and I'm able to do more than one thing," Cartwright responded. "I'm able to run the ball, I'm able to block. I pretty much can do anything they need me to do. I think last year, I proved that I can play running back at this level of football."

Memo to Rock:

If you want to stay in DC, focus on special teams play.

If you want to carry the ball, the way to get to Arizona is to head to Las Vegas and make a left...

Even if Rock doesn't make the team, I'm sure someone will pick him up. I think Simon and Mccullough have both moved ahead of him in the roster.....but that's just me. I know some of you guys will argue that...

I think Rock and Simon will make the team thanks to their special teams play.

At this point who do you cut, Rock who has busted his tail or Betts who is yet again nursing another injury?

Gibbs hinted that he wants durable guys, so I think Betts getting cut is a real possibility.

You've got to take Betts over Cartwright if we're comparing pure skills and potential, but who's been on the field more?

Was it yesterday's Washington Post that said Byner expects the Skins will only keep four backs? Portis and Morton are locks. So two more have to be cut.

I think Simon is probably gone. He's really worked hard to be on this team, but they didn't really invest anything in him to compel them to keep him. And Sultan looks like he could be prime practice squad material, yet again.

When all is said and done it wouldn't surprise me if they held on to both Rock and Ladell.

Betts - If he plays Friday and doesn't suck (or get re-injured), he's in. He is more of your proto-typical RB in terms of size, and has the most natural talent/potential of them.
Cartwright - Has shown that he can play, and is the "biggest" of them, per inch that is...even at 210 lbs. (210 at 5' 7" is more solid than Simon and McCullough are at around 205 and 5' 11"). Plus, he has proven that he can get the tough yards in short yardage and goal line.
McCullough - Has that break-away speed, but is too much like a "poor man's Portis". Too similar of a style, and he hasn't proven that he can get the tough yards like Portis can.
Simon - The guy most people had written off, but he has shown that he can play and has impressed, especially on ST. He could steal the spot away from Betts or Rock.

All that said, I think it will end up being Betts and Rock backing up Portis, with Morton used occasionally on 3rd down, and possibly keeping Sultan on the practice squad. I think Simon will be one of the tougher cuts they have to make, but will be picked up by another team.

i would be pleased if we cut mccolough and PSed Simon, hes not exactly old

rock simon if i could vote ;) betts cant stay healthy and mcollough aint no good in m eyes (not that my opinion really has any bearing on the matter).

We should keep Simon and Cartwright. Betts is not a good football player. He finds holes, but I cannot recall EVER seeing him break a tackle. Not one in his entire NFL career. Everytime I turn around he's injured and you all are screaming about his potential everytime I come to this site. Personally, I think he has less potential than Rock; he's been a very good back and Byner has said that he has quickly picked up the offense and has done everything that has been asked of him. In addition, I believe Rock would be much more helpful on special teams, you all said Betts returned kicks...so did Rock, but so what? That's Morton's job. Why should we keep an off injured scat back that can't play on special teams? If we keep Simon, Morton, Portis, and Betts what will they do in short yardage situations? Rock can hit the edge as well as hammer out tough yards, he did it rather well last season.

Keep Cartwright and Simon.

i'm not sure we can PS simon... if you're active for 10 games or have been on a PS for two years, thats it, no more PS for you... how many games has simon been on an active roster or taken a down in?

You hit the nail on the head here. Basically, if Betts is able to play against St. Louis and Atlanta, and doesn't fumble, then I would be really surprised if he gets cut.

It's not that I agree or anything, I just think that's the way it will be. He will get a pass simply because we gave up a 2nd round pick to get him. The one who gets the shaft will be either Simon or McCollough, and McCollough seems to be a lock for the practice squad.

Cartwright has done enough in my mind to make the roster. Then again, as Matty said in another thread, my name doesn't start with "coach".

I forgot there was rules for practice squad...hmm. Are those the rules, 10 games or two years?

Being on a PS for as little as 3 weeks in a season counts as a year...

its not a safety net, welfare type deal, its a transition (unemployment) period... and anyone can raid your PS at any time and sign those players to their active rosters... PS'ing simon (if it were possible) would mean he'd be gone in two seconds...

Betts is very likely not going to be cut - because he will be traded. Betts has talent and there will be a back hungry team out there who will feel Betts will be able to stay healthy for them and play quality ball. He won't be kept on the team unless he tears the field up in the last games of the preseason - and he probably won't even play vs. St. Louis. You can't keep Betts otherwise without sending a message that hard work with results doesn't count - its how high you get drafted, even if you're injured.

Portis will probably make the team, though he could go to the practice squad.

McCullough will be kept, because he is going to be the backup to Portis. He has the explosion and talent to do it all. Coach Byner was talking about how they wanted him to run with more authority into the holes and that he has been doing it. He has the electricity.

Morton is there.

So John Simon and Rock Cartwright are the guys who will battle it out for the last spot. At this point the most important thing will be short yardage ability, and second to that is how they play on special teams. We need a short yardage guy. Right now my thought is that Simon will make it, and Rock will play for another team.

i disagree though, i think it'll be simon over mcollough, mcollough has only looked good on the 3rd stringers...

I'm not sure who would trade for damaged goods, unless Betts shows something these last two preseason games. Even then we'd be lucky to get a 4th or a 5th rounder for him.

Betts doesn't show something in next 2 games maybe even just this StLouis game I think he's gone. Doesn't seem to have the attitude of a Gibbs Redskin. Cartwright does. Betts probably gone, hopefully we can get a reserve DL or OL for him. McCoullough and Simon will be the decision, but Gibbs may find a way to keep both. We'll see how many TE's are released.
