Brooks/Frost Update 8-9-08

Frost - 4 punts, 34 yd. avg.

Good placement from what I did see, however.

A 45 yd punt return probably did not help. STs need some work!

Bills have good specials, for what it's worth.

Frosty didn't impress, but it's early yet.

Thats the thing, look beyond the average, Frost didn't do that bad. BUT, I still say, you use a draft pick on a Punter, that is your punter.

Exactly, that is why I think Brooks is going to get the job in the end.
Frost didn't do bad, but he didn't really impress either. I think he is going to have to show the coaches something if he wants to be this team's punter.

From what I had heard, they were really hoping Frost could improve his hangtime. Seems like he did okay with that last night.

Frosts punt was for 40 yards and was returned for 45 yards. Where was this hangtime because i didnt see any on that play. Hello Brooks

Yes, the Bills' broadcasters said Frost didn't give his 'Teams' guys enough time to get down the field because there was no hangtime on his punt.

8/16 - Brooks 6 punts for 43 yds.

One thing I def. have noticed is Brooks' hang time.

He's consistently floating them up there, and that's something we've been missing for quite some time. Good punters are huge in those close games...

I'll be shocked if Brooks doesn't win the punting job. He is consistently booming them high and deep. We know a shank is right around the corner for Frost.

Re: Brooks/Frost Update 8-9-08

The question to me is, is the difference between Frost and the new guy worth a draft pick? We could of drafted some defense with that pick. Of course we could have drafted some defense with two picks we used on the two WRs who haven't caught a ball yet. I hear next year we're looking to draft Ethan Albright's replacement.

A good punter can get you out of a bad situation if your offense doesn't do the job, and Frost has not been doing well. I think if you read this thread you'll see that Brooks is doing better with his punts, especially the hangtime (which helps the special teams get downt he field)

Re: Brooks/Frost Update 8-9-08

I have no issue with drafting a punter in the 6th Round. Historically, that is one of the safest bets in a draft lottery.

As someone else posted in another thread, the majority of punters are "just a guy" and Frost is clearly "just a guy". Fairly often, drafted punters turn into something other than just another punter. In light of that, the importance of good field position, and the crapshoot involved at any other position, I would suggest that - Yes. "the difference between Frost and the new guy" IS "worth a draft pick[.]"

I sure hope Brooks gets the job.. screw frost.. we act like someone is going to pick him up if we drop him... pshttt Ill tell you what, some team in the NFl is just WAITING for us to release Brooks.. I will be PISSED.. Durant is that dude, frost is not.

Re: Brooks/Frost Update 8-9-08

Off topic, I know, but rather than a fight for the punter position I would liked to have seen a battle at the kicker position. To me Suisham just doesn't cut it sometimes, when for the most part Frost does cut it.

Re: Brooks/Frost Update 8-9-08

It's not like we spent a 1st or 2nd rounder on a kicker (Janikowski and Nugent), the odds of you getting a decent player in the 6th round aren't very high. I'd gladly have the Ray Guy award winner over some practice squad bum with that pick.

There is a telling sign to me that Brooks is our guy. I have a Cowboys fan friend that came up to me and said, "Hey, the new punter you drafted looks like a huge upgrade from the guy last year." Obviously I don't watch preseason, so I don't know any better...but if he noticed it, that's enough evidence for me that Brooks is the man.

To me there is no questions.

Brooks ---> draft pick spent

Brooks ---> punted in the Meadowlands, which just happens to be where we are playing game one of the season (Coincidence?)

Brooks ---> has done nothing but show he is better so far in pre-season.

Re: Brooks/Frost Update 8-9-08

not only that, but a rookie that is the same in stats to a 4 year vet, then to me, the rookie has more promise and we should go with him..

To be ideal, if every rookie that came in to the league could compete or possibly pass a vet on the depth chart because of skills, you would have as many of those rookies on your roster, because that means your team will be good, and young, for a longg time.

the fact that Brooks is even in the same league as Frost as this point shows the promise of the kid, and he hasnt even had the experience like Frost has.

When the young player s start outplaying the vets, that's when you have to start getting rid of the old guys, not matter what they did for your team in the past.

Brooks is going to be the guy barring a major screwup. Frost is just sticking around for now as an insurance policy.

4thGenRedskin21 08-19-2008 01:30 PM

Re: Brooks/Frost Update 8-9-08

The only way Frost makes the team is if he somehow becomes the best punter in the league.. IM sorry, but we used a draft pick on this kid, he's younger, and looks more promising. Don't let the door hit you where the good lord split ya frost.
You really don't watch the Redskins at all in the preseason?
Well, first off, I live in New Mexico (aka: shitland), so the games aren't televised here anyway. But I did catch the first quarter of the first game. If the game is on, I will catch a few plays here and there, but I purposely tell myself not to watch it. I don't want to get excited about things that don't deserve excitement. Like Brennan for instance. I love the guy and the pick, but him doing well in preseason doesn't deserve my attention. Wuerffel did VERY well in the preseason, but he sucked.
This is probably the only thing in my life that I show extreme patience. I am certainly jonesing for Redskins football, but I will wait patiently for the season. I already took off Sept. 4th to watch the game!

Im in Redskins territory here in Va and I STILL have DirectTV so I dont miss any of our division rivals games either. I would shoot myself if I wasnt able to watch the redskins in preseason, because your preseason says alot on how you do during the regular season. remember in 06?? we lost alllll our preseason games I believe?? we were like "it's only preseason" but yea right, it was a precursor of what was to come. We went 5-11.

The preseason DESERVES attention.

I live in Pa and I've watched all 3 preseason games. And if it wouldn't have been for Farve the game i would of missed the Jets game. All of the games have been on Nationwide Stations Ala NFL network. Thank God for that otherwise id be subject to replays after the Eagles were done playing.

What would make you think that other than the one year you are speaking of?
For instance, the Patriots were 1-3 in 04, and went on to win the super bowl losing only 2 games all season.

I am going to sound like a broken record, but Spurrier's first season, we went 4-1 and scored the most points in the history of preseason, only to go 7-9 and ranked 25th out of 32 teams in offense.
A lot of us don't want to recall that season, but we had some horrendous games, week 2 losing to the eagles 37-7. Losing to the Saints, 43-27. Losing to the packers 30-9. Losing to the Jags 26-7.

Here is a list of recent preseason vs regular season stats.

2007 preseason, 2-2 (28th in points for)
2007 reg season, 9-7 (18th in points for)

2006 preseason, 0-4 (worst, 32nd in points for)
2006 reg season, 5-11 (19th points for)

2005 preseason, 1-3 (25th in points allowed)
2005 reg season, 10-6 (9th in points allowed)

2004 preseason, 3-2 (nothing notable, middle of pack in pf and pa)
2004 reg season, 6-10 (31st in PF, 5th in PA)

2003 preseason, 1-3 (29th in points)
2003 reg season, 5-11 (21st in points)

2002 preseason, 4-1 (set record for most points 164, and was 57 points better than the 2nd best team...dead last, 32nd in points allowed)
2002 reg season, 7-9 (25th in points, 22nd in points allowed)

2001 preseason, 1-3 (tied for worst in the NFL in points allowed)
2001 reg. season, 8-8 (13th in point allowed)

I also can't prove this cause I can't find preseason stats for our super bowl runs, but i am fairly certain we went winless in the preseason on one of our SB championships. Also, I am fairly certain the Cowboys went winless in the preseason and went on to win it all at least once.

So with the exception of 03, there is not a whole lot of similarity. In fact, those stats prove that preseason usually has little to no effect on the regular season.
