Defensive line..Who should be cut?

Looking at the other teams in the NFC East I must say that their D-Lines are impressive. Something we have lacked since forever. We get no pash rush and something has to change. The addition of Jason Taylor and Andre Carter elevating his game brings optimism. But to be honest. We need some new blood in here.

We must stop our man crushes on guys that aren't producing. IF they can't stop the run or rush the passer effectively they need to go. No matter if they are the topic of man crushes for unknown reasons. What i've seen of Rob Jackson he should make the team. Hopefully Erasmus James can show some flashes of pass rushing ability if he gets in this preseason. In an interveiw he also said he can play against the run also which is yet to be seen... saying that. The guys that have been on this team. Who have been a part of a line that has been at the bottom of the NFL as far as sacks need to go. Because obviosuly they are not producing. If anything needs to be tweaked in the pass rushing schemes on defense. That needs to happen also. But if players are not producing we need to find players who do or give one of these new guys a chance.

The Giants defense line helped them win a Superbowl. Because a pass rusher breathing down your neck is a solid equalizer to a pro-bowl QB..Ask Tom Brady...

Re: Defensive line..Stop the man crushes..

Who exactly are you talking about? You do realize we gave up less than 3 yards per carry on Sat. night? The D-line played great against the Jets and Bills. The Colts game left alot to be desired but since then they have really picked up.

Re: Defensive line..Stop the man crushes..

The skins finally did something along the Dline. Lets wait till the regular season gets going to say we have no rush. Jason Taylor is a bit older but still an absolute stud.

Re: Defensive line..Stop the man crushes..

It's preseason guys. Let's wait until Game 1 when Blache unleashes hell. Jason Taylor is still trying to find his way in our system. Let's be patient. My biggest concern right now is situational play calling on offense. That's been this teams achilles heel over the last 2-3 seasons but that's not the topic so I'll stop there. The Defense is going to be straight nasty this year and it starts with the d-line...collectively as a UNIT!

HAIL!!

This is like saying "buy low... sell high".

Yes, if it were that easy everyone would do it. We can get rid of guys that are not producing. That is easy. Now replacing them with better guys... how exactly do we do that with our salary cap? Do you have some defensive studs identified that we can grab?

Maybe what your saying was relevant on draft day. Or maybe its groundhog day....

Wait... I'm supposed buy low, sell high?? I thought it was buy low, get high?? Wow... No wonder all my investments are in the snack food industry.

Seriously, what man-crushes are we talking about? I thought it was confined to Brennan and Mason (ohhh, I am all atwitter at the mention of their names!!). I haven't heard an inordinate amount of praise for anyone along the line. In fact, I thought it was one of the more heavily criticized units in the offseason.

Re: Defensive line..Stop the man crushes..

I've been watching Taylor and so far I haven't seen much. I would say that even with the addition of Taylor, we are not going to have the pass rush that the Giants do. The Giants just abused a very good Cleveland offensive line last night.

Re: Defensive line..Stop the man crushes..

Just one note,
on one of the sacks Saturday, where we did blitz, Taylor was being double team, Carter was coming off the edge. This defensive front, once they start playing packages and with gameplans is going to be our best in years. What change, that is plausible, would you want to make?

I'm not sure exactly what D line man crushes you are refering to because I haven't heard any. Looking at the past few games, the D line has appeared to step up. Granted you can't expect JT and AC to be in for 2 series and make 37 and a half sacks, but the D line has looked improved. For instance, against the scrubs, Ryan Boschetti knocked down several passes. Last year, that wasn't happening at all. I have to believe that it has to do with an increased interest in the 'Skins D line improving.

Plus its just preseason. Lighten up DMV baby

Our DLine is sooo sick. We're gonna steamroll the competition. It's the best DLine in the history of the NFL. All our guys are HoF bound. I predict 100 sacks this year!

Re: Defensive line..Stop the man crushes..

If anything we've had an overachieving d-line for 3 of the last 4 years. I credit GW w/getting the most out of an avg. unit.

Now, after bemoaning that no high round picks were used on the line in the draft, we managed to trade for a vet who still has something left & a young guy that might be able to rescue his career & get close to his potential. In addition, Rob Jackson at least looks like he can play in the nfl. Will he be a starter one day? who knows, but for a 7th round pick, making the team is an accoplishment.

The DE position is now pretty crowded & Wilson is in serious jeopardy of being cut. If you want to complain about any position I think it'd be the lack of proven depth at LB given the age & health of the starters.

NO I am talking about older playrs that haven't produced and other players that haven't produced. Theydid good against the run but we also need to touch a QB every now and then. Daniels is hurt so I wont comment on him.

Montgomery has played well and has a lot of potential and upside. Alexander is a baller.

The rook Rob Jackson needs to make this team. Eventhough we have only played preseason. He is getting more sacks than the veterans on the D-Line..regardless of competition level. If Erasmus James shows anything we need to keep him also. so whoever is the ODD man out..The young DT have played decent. But you have to be versatile. You need to be able to stop the run and rush the passer. Its still early and like I said. Andre and Jason are going to show up. But we can't let go guys that have potential for older guys younger guys/rooks that can be our future or contribute. Those that have had their opportunity and haven't taken advantage of it are obvisouly not hungry enough or dont ahve the skills. We were near the bottom in sacks last year. If we dont touch the QB we will get eaten up. Even by mediocre QBs. You saw how easily Brett picked us apart. You remember the thrashing we took by the Patriots. Now saying that. You see what the Giants did to the Patriorts in the SuperBowl and there previous game against the Patriots? they ahve a beastly D-Line. Subpar D-Lines are not going to cut it..That's th eonly thing the Giants have over us. You see how they stock D-Lineman and draft quality D-lineman. SO its either time for thos eon the D-Line that haven't stepped up on the D-Line the past few years to step up or they need to find somoen who can do the job.

I think you might need some perspective on Rob Jackson. While he's flashed some promise he's still a very green rookie. The practice squad for him isn't that outrageous of a thought.

I agree. Both he & the team would be elated if he makes the PS. if he's really that good, somebody will snag him. Making the practice squad as a 7th rounder & being available if somebody gets hurt would be ideal though.

Well atleast he can touch a QB in a game. Preseason or not. I am talking abotu some of these older guys. Its really to late to do anything now. But Our DBs get more sacks than out D-Line. I am glad we got Jason Taylor and have Andre Carter. I like the kid Montgomery. But I am talking about Pass rushers for the future and back-ups. Maybe man crushes was the wrong word. I actually hate that word myself..sounds kinda..but anyways..familiarity or seniority. How many games have you watched were we barely touch the Qb and his jersey is extra clean..?

Green? Rob Jackson is a rookie but he is getting sacks..NFL Stats: by Player Category

How fucking hard is it to just name the players you're talking about? This is so unbelievably ridiculous. Is it so damn hard to just name the effin players instead of being so freakin' cryptic? Are you talking about Griffin, Boschetti, Evans (those are the only veterans left that I can think of), are you talking about all of them, one of them, two of them? Put some friggin' meat on the bones of your thread. Goodness if this is the crap you're going to offer, I can see why ES didn't want you around.

Re: Defensive line..Stop the man crushes..

Well, I certainly like this defensive line, much better than the last three. Taylor and Carter on the ends both have the potential and did it last year in racking up double digit sacks. The key in the middle is Grif AND health of Grif. With both Montgomery and Golston doing extremely well, Grif should be able to stay healthy and fresh.

Here's some good stats regarding defensive lines:

FOOTBALL OUTSIDERS: Football analysis and NFL stats for the Moneyball era - Authors of Pro Football Prospectus 2008

GTripp will be able to explain these stats better than me ... I know he frequents this site.

Anyways, the data shows our defensive line was ranked 17th last year overall. That puts us above NE, SD, GB, JAX, and DEN, as well as others.

Interestingly enough, those stats rank us #1 last year in the 10+ category -- a measure of LB performance.

Yes, he has made a sack or 2 against non NFL players...but besides the highlight reel...not much stands out.
To me...he is the ideal practice squad guy.

I doubt we would lose him to another team...they usually don't go picking squads for 7th round DEs on teams notorious for having a DE problem
