I'll be the first to admit that he has a right to say whatever he wants, including this B.S.

So do I and let me exercise that right by saying, fuck josh howard.

I understand (but do not condone) where he's coming from.

With that said, I would NEVER say something like that personally and come on dude, just put your hand over your damn heart. Or at least keep your mouth shut and at least LOOK respectful. How hard is that?

What does being black have to do with the star spangled banner? Maybe I am missing something here, but is howard really smart enough to know that many black slaves fought for the British in promise of freedom?

If he did, then sure great. But I think Josh is just an idiot who ties the anthem with white people, and dislikes it for that fact.

Apparently the whole tone of the day on that video was one of "F Authority. We Gangstas Here"

He has the right to speak his mind, but I think a good point was made here at work. Why has he never indicated anything of this nature in all his years in the NBA. He's never attempted to take any sort of stand when the anthem is played at every game. Now he's suddenly Black and won't do it? "Don't be Black when it's comfortable"

You should know by now, that there's still a generation of Blacks bitter over Civil Rights and slavery and all that bullshit. Civil Rights I can get. Slavery? No way.

Let's see.... you make millions of dollars in game checks and endorsements to play a child's game. And your response to is to be disrespectful of the country that makes that possible? If you're really that committed to this point of view, whatever the fuck justifies it in your mind, go play ball overseas, get paid in euros or rial or renminbi and keep it real. In the mean time, shut the fuck up.

The part that has me so pissed off is that he's not bad mouthing the current leaders of our nation or any specific facet. When you disrespect the anthem or the flag you are disrespecting all of the people who gave their lives so that you can live in a country where you're free to do whatever you like. Even if that means spitting in their faces with your clown ass behavior. No excuse for this level of ignorance. None.

He gets to enjoy the benefits of this nation, but doesn't have respect for it? Makes no sense.

Re: F... Josh Howard

Colin Cowherd's point earlier today on this was; dumb people say dumb things. While I often dislike Cowherd, I think he's right on here.

In the YouTube/Cell phone camera age, any high-profile person should approach everything they say in public (and unfortunately private also) as if it would be plastered all over the Internet. To think the way Howard does is wrong and dumb IMO, to say it in front of a camera is beyond stupid or he's just a disrespectful punk (probably a combination of both).

I'm sure he didnt think about the many thousands of black people who sacrificed, suffered, fought and died for this country's freedom. He also didn't think about the thousands that sacrificed, suffered, fought and died for civil rights. He should also pause and think about the lives lead by billions of people in third-world countries and thank God that he lives in the U.S. and has the lifestyle he has.

Right I know that, but we are talking about the star spangled banner, written in 1814, and Civil war and Civil rights movement were alot later.

I guess I can see the song represents America, and it was white run at the time, but again I ask, did Josh howard protest for that reason? I think not. SS seems right that he thought it's gangsta he is not listening to authority.

Ask Obama.

Funny how people are pissed at a spoiled athlete, but look the other direction when a presidential candidate doesn't put his hand over his heart.

note- not saying you are saying that, just making the observation.

The U.S. Flag Code clearly states that during the national anthem, non-military citizens should face the flag and put their right hand over their hearts....or stomach.

EDIT: This is a joke and an attempt to point out that it's unreasonable to jump on Obama because he doesn't always put his hand on his heart during the anthem. Just look around at any sporting event and many people don't have their hands over their hearts, it's not because they're disrespectful they just don't know.

Note the word "should". There's no law which requires citizens to do anything during the anthem or the pledge of allegiance. Quakers and others have religous doctorines which do not allow them to swear allegiance to governments or countries or to 'respect' idols of any kind.

That's the way it should be. When the police or any government agency can haul you away because you don't salute der fuhrer or stand to respect the flag of the motherland or fatherland, then this country has truly reached a sorry state.

saden1 09-19-2008 08:35 AM

Re: F... Josh Howard

There's a law that says put your hand on your heart but due to the first amendment it's not enforceable. And the stomach doesn't qualify as the heart.

2- If they do not know, they are pretty damn stupid. I don't know about you, but in elementary school, I was taught this.
3- there is a SPECIFIC reason as to why Obama did it, don't be fooled.

That being said, Josh Howard lost a ton of respect from me. I am disgusted at his lack of respect for the country that is making him rich.

1. Obama should be more aware of the image he is portraying, absolutely.
2. I wasn't taught this in school, and I'm sure many others aren't either. The only way I knew it is from my parents and being in the military. I can promise you the public school system (at least in Virginia Beach) is not spending any time teaching the US Flag Code.
3. I don't believe that.

You've read several of my other posts, you know I am diametrically opposed to Obama on most issues. But that's the point, I disagree with him philosophically and on issues, not because he didn't put his hand on his heart during the National Anthem a few times. That was my point of posting the Bush picture, what was his hidden agenda by putting his hand on his stomach? None, just a camera on a guy 24x7 and he got lazy for a few moments. Is he not patriotic now?

I guess I'm just fed up with the trash that both sides have put out in election, after election, after election, and it seems to get worse every year.

Something that made me think (which is one of the reasons I enjoy this site, the diverse viewpoints), I was looking at a post saden made a while ago stating his positions on major issues and about 70-80% of his positions were things I agreed with. You would never think that possible if you just looked at the positions he and I take in arguing left vs. right issues (it surprised me).

My point is, it sure would be nice if the folks we send to Congress and the White House could focus on staightening out the 70-80% of things a vast majority of us agree on and work/compromise on the other stuff, rather than the constant partisan bickering and neither side wanting to give an inch on anything because it may affect a special interest contribution or come back to haunt them in a future election.

Okay. Thanks for clearing that up. I didn't watch the video and thus didn't know. :)

I still hold to the point that most of the people that talk shit like that, never end up voting anyway. Voter turnout is always so low in the inner city because (from the people I've talked to, who actually know something about politics) they feel like no matter who gets in office, they'll just end up getting shafted anyway, so they feel like why should they bother?

But I don't want people to think that because one douchebag says some dumb shit that it could possibly represent the way an entire group feels.

Thanks SmootSmack for helping to make my point.

And D, all I said that if Obama had a "vast amount" of supporters who felt that way, not "all". I know that he doesn't have everybody feeling that way that support him.

I'm going to try not to get too emotional here, but this kind of crap just gets my blood boiling. But, Howard felt damn comfortable "thug muging" in front of the camera with his boys, and showing his ass. If he or anybody else feel that strongly about this country, then please do us all a favor and just leave. Just get your unhappy, disrespectful ass out of our country. It is called a visa Howard, and I would even help to pay for it.

All this talk about Obama not wanting to wear a flag pin, and not putting his hand over is heart (or stomach) during the National Anthem should give us all a little pause for concern. He is a freaking U.S. Senator. And this man wants to be our president. Not if I have anything to say about it.

Like I've said in privious threads, this man Obama has questionable people that he associates with, and who support him.

Totally agree. Good post.

Howard is a disgrace the way he went around and made an ass of himself.

About Obama, I just find it odd that this is a senator not following the code.
http://www.stpeteblue.com/Flagcode.htm
"During rendition of the national anthem when the flag is displayed, all present except those in uniform should stand at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. Men not in uniform should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Persons in uniform should render the military salute at the first note of the anthem and retain this position until the last note. When the flag is not displayed, those present should face toward the music and act in the same manner they would if the flag were displayed there."

So he's either really stupid, or really ignorant. How can you run for president and do such a thing?
Although his stance on 3rd term abortion is even a stronger reason not to vote for him.
