I don't care where it bottoms out as much as I care when it bottoms out. The sooner the market can rebound, the better off we will all be.

Let's see. The height not too long ago was a shade over 14,000. I'm gonna guess somewhere between 6500 and 7000 before it starts to pull back up. The market will correct itself...it's just a matter of time when.

Is anybody considering selling off any stock that they own? Have you thought about cashing out your 401k?

That thought actually crossed my mind this morning -- what if you had cashed out last Friday before this week's tumble?

Now is the worse time to think about selling unless you have such a poor portfolio of investments they will never recover then it might not be a bad idea.

I'm actual about to buy $15,000 in stocks today in Co's. that are strong but are getting dragged down by this mess. I'm guessing I might double my money in just a few months and wish I had more money to invest.

I agree with Beemnseven, now is not the time to start selling. If someone absolutely has to sell, I would "suggest" selling in increments with a time certain attached. For instance, I'm going to sell 10,000 of stock ABC. I would sell a specific amount over the course of five days or six days. That way if the market is starts to move higher on any one of those of six days, you're not locking in the same loss across the board.

Between the AIG stock I own and my 401k, I could honestly cry over the money I've lost recently. It's a serious kick to the groin. But, I'm certainly not going to panic and yank my money or switch it to less riskier investments. I figure I still have a good 20-25 years for it to grow. This is just a serious downtime in the cycle. My Dad on the other hand who recently just retired is sweating things a bit more.

Bargains can be had everywhere GE, MSFT, ORCL, BAC, oh my. I love it! I wish I had more money. Anyone selling their stock is a fool. If you buy established companies with good track record and are in it long term, you buy more...the more the stock falls the more you buy. If you're "timing the market" or "trying to make a quick buck" good luck, you'll need it.

I predict the lowest it will go is low to mid 7K. Anything below that is sustained for a month or two then I would worry.

It's funny you mention it. I did just that (though not because of any great foresight). I'm in the process of buying a small business and needed to cash out my stock portfolio to move into a CD to guarantee the loan. Based on the percentage drops, I saved over $ 30K. (Thank God).

Of course my 401(K) is down a great deal along with everyone else.

I call 7k.

Why? No reason. Just seems like it might hit that low, that's all.

Like others said, now is the time to buy. You buy when prices go down, not when they go up. Any other approach and you're playing a market timing game, which any sane investor will tell you is about as productive as magic beans.

this american life is an amazing show/program/whatever.

once this thing is tanked out, i'm buying in hard. citigroup is cheap, tech stocks (MS/google/intel/etc), global resources (palladium/platinum/gold/etc). just waiting to see the bottom first. I know i'm not the only one either.

there might be a lower total global de facto credit cap after this thing (more conservative use of lending money and thus less total lent value).

that said, this could just be a bear market run up with profit takers tomorrow... we'll have to see.

Well I hope I caught one stock at its lowest as I took some money and purchased few hundred shares. Right now its up about $7.00 from when I purchased.

True, but I don't ever recall seeing swings this big. We've seen 500, 700, and 900 swings and the Dow has lost 20%+ in the past two weeks.

The stock market historically has gotten extremely volatile leading up to a prolonged boom. You'll see huge swings one direction or another, but as you guys are saying, it inevitably turns back up.

When is the question. Wish I knew, because I'd have a crystal ball and would be a billionaire.

I saw something the other night that showed how wild the Dow swung during the depression. Some of the highest single day gains in history came during that time.

Excellent advice from one of the best.

It's important to keep in mind, however, that just because prices overall are down doesn't mean that your average Joe (I suppose that's Joe Plumber now) should go dropping coin willy-nilly on any stock that strikes his fancy.

I would [B]highly[/B] recommend reading [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Intelligent-Investor-Definitive-Investing-Practical/dp/0060555661/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1224252338&sr=8-1"]Benjamin Graham's [I]The Intelligent Investor[/I][/ame] if you have little experience investing. Even if you have tremendous experience I would still read it. Buffet himself claims that Graham taught him the majority of what he knows (Buffet was a student of Graham I believe at Columbia University and the only one to ever get an A in Graham's class, or so the story goes.)

Graham's method of value investing is tough to do in the modern era (even as devalued as things are lately), but his principles behind investigating a company thoroughly before investing are just as valid today as they were 30-40 years ago. His perspective on the market is fascinating too and really comforting I found given the breadth of his experience.

The distinction between investing and speculating couldn't be more important, and Graham defines it perfectly. What's going on in the markets for the the past 10 years is pure, unadulterated speculation, not "intelligent investing."

You mean Greece is having financial problems because of all their social programs? No Way. Maybe they should call Canada and get some tips. Ops, Canada is having the same problems. I know maybe we should add these same social programs so we can join them. Then when we cannot afford another thing and the goverment has to finally cut back on these programs we can get mad riot and kill people who had nothing to do with it.

Germany is a socialist country with lots of social programs, I wonder why they haven't gone under. The Greek problem is two folds, decline in world wide shipping and tourism due to United States sub-prime crisis, and [URL="http://www.businessinsider.com/henry-blodget-greece-paid-goldman-300-million-to-help-it-hide-its-ballooning-debts-2010-2"]fraud[/URL] on the part of the Greek government with the help of Goldman Sachs to mask their real debt.
