Jason Taylor to have second surgery on Monday on calf

Posted by Josh Alper on October 24, 2008, 5:38 p.m. On Thursday, Redskins defensive end Jason Taylor said his surgically repaired left calf was about “60 percent” healed. On Friday, though, coach Jim Zorn said Taylor would have a minor procedure on the calf Monday. “He’s trying to play football on it, but that may not be allowing it to heal fast enough,” Zorn said. Taylor seemed a bit unsure about just what was going to happen on Monday. “There has been talk about it, but to be honest, I don’t even know what the gameplan is right now. I’m going to the hospital now to find out what we’re going to do. The only thing I’m really focusing on right now is hopefully playing the game on Sunday and try to help this team beat the Lions. The rest of it doesn’t really matter right now. I’ve been hurt for a month and it hasn’t changed. There’s been a slight change and that’s part of the reason why we’re doing all this talking. I really don’t know any details.” Taylor suffered the injury on September 21 against the Cardinals and missed the next two games recovering from surgery. He hasn’t practiced this week and is listed as questionable on the Redskin injury report. He didn’t practice last week either but played 48 snaps against the Browns. He didn’t have a tackle but knocked down a pair of passes. Taylor's Calf Injury Still a Concern |
Re: Jason Taylor to have second surgery on Monday on calf
damn. Jason better play next season.
|
Re: Jason Taylor to have second surgery on Monday on calf
Key word Minor
|
Re: Jason Taylor to have second surgery on Monday on calf
He should play next year regardless. They gave up a lot to get him and haven't gotten much production in return. I gotta think that he would want to considering that the skins are legitimate contenders.
|
Re: Jason Taylor to have second surgery on Monday on calf
I hope it is minor, and that he is ok. Seems like he really wants to play, so I have no doubt that if he can he will, especially next year.
|
Re: Jason Taylor to have second surgery on Monday on calf
Having JT play next year would be great for the defense and great for getting the value of the draft pick which we traded for him.
However, for this year there is still hope that he can heal and come back strong for the stretch run and the possible playoffs. |
Re: Jason Taylor to have second surgery on Monday on calf
Ahhhh shit. Oh well. Maybe he can take the next few weeks off and come back after the bye. That's really the best case from it sounds like. Bummer.
|
Re: Jason Taylor to have second surgery on Monday on calf
zorn said on tv that all that was gonna happen monday is,"a very minor lance"on jason's calf.then, during the bye week,it's gonna be reevaluated.
|
Re: Jason Taylor to have second surgery on Monday on calf
Sit down, let that calf heal, then come back full strength. I know it's hard, but a full strength Taylor can help us way more down the stretch than a 60-70% Jason Taylor for the rest of the year.
|
Re: Jason Taylor to have second surgery on Monday on calf
Shut him down until after the bye, we need him healthy for the stretch run
|
Re: Jason Taylor to have second surgery on Monday on calf
Get the needed rest and then help finish the year strong!
|
Re: Jason Taylor to have second surgery on Monday on calf
I say do the procedure today and let him rest the Detroit, Pittsburgh and Bye week so he's ready for Dallas.
|
Re: Jason Taylor to have second surgery on Monday on calf
We gave up a 2nd rounder next year and a 6th in 2010 to get him, he takes up $8m cap space this year and $8.5m next, we put a lot of our eggs in this old basket. He better produce. We could get several good players with that $8.5M in cap space next year he is taking up.
At least Shawn Springs who also takes up a lot of cap space produces when he is on the field. |
Re: Jason Taylor to have second surgery on Monday on calf
A week or two ago Taylor said the calf is the most swollen and painful right after a game. I say definitely shut him down this weekend and probably next weekend. Besides, I'd say a 100% Demetric Evans has been better than a 60% Jason Taylor thus far.
Being healthy for the last 7 games after the bye should be his focus. I'd love to see him come out 100% guns blazing in the Week 11 Dallas game and crush Romo a few times. I'm not worried about what we'll get from him when he's healthy. IMO injuries are the only reason he's not pro-bowl quality right now. |
Re: Jason Taylor to have second surgery on Monday on calf
yeah i agree with you all, shut him down for a stretch, even until the last few games of the reg season if thats what it takes. i was looking forward to seeing what he could do this year, alil disappointed but thats how football goes sometimes.
go skins!! |
Re: Jason Taylor to have second surgery on Monday on calf
shut him down .. one thing about taylor I love is his ability to knock passes down at the line of scrimmage in key situations ... it's happened about 3-4 times this year where he has knocked down a ball on 3rd down or key situations ... if he can be 90-100% healthy for the stretch run ( beginning vs Dallas ) I think that can really catapolt (sp) us deep into the playoffs .. how about erasmus james ?? where is that guy !

Love how this thread is filled with people wanting him back in if he were 70-80% earlier in the year. Rushed him back and just slowed down his progression.

When you say "earlier in the year," do you mean right after the calf injury or before? |
Re: Jason Taylor to have second surgery on Monday on calf
Right after, when there was a rumor he could come back.

Taylor Headed for Hospital Tonight Steve Yanda reports: Defensive end Jason Taylor said after the game that he planned to go to the hospital Sunday night after the team returned to Washington to have his injured left calf examined. Taylor was scheduled to have the calf drained Monday morning, but he indicated he might not wait to have the procedure done. He said he would stay at the hospital overnight regardless of when the procedure took place. "We're going to go in tonight and try to fix it again and see where we're at," he said. "We're going in tonight. I think we're doing it tomorrow, but I'm going in tonight." Taylor, who underwent emergency surgery to relieve acute compartment syndrome on his left calf earlier this season, said he would stay at the hospital overnight regardless of when the procedure took place. The calf has healed more slowly than expected, and Taylor confirmed he was not close to being at full strength during Sunday's game. "It felt like it has the last few weeks; it's not right," said Taylor, who recorded one tackle against the Lions. "I'm nowhere near myself, but I'm trying to give what I have and help this team, and as long as we keep winning that's all that matters." |

He'll be back for the playoffs. ;)

According to JZ Press conf. going on now, he's out until after the bye

I just was listening to the zorn presser. He stated there was a little skin infection, and that JT would be off his feet for the next three days. And he does not expect JT to be involved Monday at all. Yes, he is out until after bye week zorn stated! |

And he does next expect JT to be involved Monday at all.
I know tht JT is dinged up (and has been for the season -- first getting in to game shape and then with the calf problem), but the reality is we're close to last in sacks this year. Our D has been great regardless, but I would really like to see the Skins pressuring more -- with their line -- on defense. I wonder whether Chris Wilson (who has crazy speed for a DE) can make more of an impact. We have to have guys step up and provide more pressure in the second half of the season. It puts a real strain on our secondary when opposing QBs have time to look at multiple options, and while our secondary has arisen to the challenge, we still will have real tests this season against the Giants, Dallas, and Eagles, among others. |
Re: Jason Taylor to have second surgery on Monday on calf
Sidenote, off thread topic: From what zorn just said Samuels is going to need some repairs on his knee. Not sure how soon. They hope to have him for Monday?
But the repairs could come before seasons end....? |
Re: Jason Taylor to have second surgery on Monday on calf
Although they did not say, they imply that he might be out a couple of weeks as well
|
Re: Jason Taylor to have second surgery on Monday on calf
Thanks. Didn't see the presser
|
Re: Jason Taylor to have second surgery on Monday on calf
I'm all for keeping him out until after the bye. Let him rest and not do any kind of football activities. We need JT at 100%. Plus, its not like Demetric Evans is a bum. That dude has been playing really well all year. He deserves some more PT.

I agree 100%. We beat Dallas and Philly without JT. Get him his rest so he'll be good to go for our stretch run. Evans has played really well. Plus he's good against the run and the Steelers will have Willie Parker back next Monday. |

I agree. Right now he's doing us any good playing at 60%. |
Re: Jason Taylor to have second surgery on Monday on calf
i second that. we need him healthy for the end
|
Re: Jason Taylor to have second surgery on Monday on calf
Evans has stepped up and played real well. But what is going on with James, I have not even seen him in the rotation?
|
Re: Jason Taylor to have second surgery on Monday on calf
i dont know..THAT is a good question
|
Re: Jason Taylor to have second surgery on Monday on calf
E. James was on the field quite a bit yesterday and even drew a holding call.

Thanks for the info. I'll have to go back and watch the DVR. I did not catch him one time, and did not see a holding call on him. I was in and out a little bit, but I didn't miss much maybe a couple minutes of game time. He must not have done anything or got to much playtime? |

Just looking at the game stats James recorded no tackles and that was a Defensive offside, penalty which was declined in the 4th quarter. No wonder I didn't see him he wasn't out there much and didn't do anything when he was. It was in the 4th quarter I believe. |
Re: Jason Taylor to have second surgery on Monday on calf
That is fine, I am all for letting Taylor get his surgery and rest.... The more pressing issue here is Springs will miss the Mon night game as well. While Rogers and Smoot are playing very well.... the Steelers have more than a couple pretty good receivers. Not to mention a QB that will pick you apart if given time. Our pass rush is not even close to the Giants'.
