Packers, Rodgers Agree on Contract Extension
 

The Green Bay Packers signed first-year starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers to a contract extension through the 2014 season on Friday.

The deal is in the range of Tony Romo's, who signed a six-year, $67.5 million contract last season with the Dallas Cowboys, a source told ESPN.com's John Clayton.

Don't believe anything Vinny says. It's his job to lie. He probably went from the broadcast room straight to the negotiating table immediately after the show.

I don't think it would necessarily be a mistake to wait until the offseason or even the start of next season to re-sign JC. What's the upside of signing him right now? We lock him up? As Vinny pointed out, he's under contract for two years. What's the downside of signing him right now? Probably around $20M of cap room if he gets seriously hurt between now and 2010.

There's always the possibility of injury. But let's suppose Jason finishes this season with no interceptions and a great playoff run. (Hey, it could happen)Wouldn't they be paying a premium on his contract? I would think if we get the deal done now it would come with a little bit of a discount.

I don't think Jason wants to leave and I don't think Snyder would have any problem paying him what he's worth. The truth is, alot can happen between now and when his contract runs out. Remember how bad it looked last year when he got hurt? I see no problem with waiting a while. Hell, it was'nt even that long ago people were questioning whether he was even qualified to be a starter. I think Jason has a great future ahead of him and I'm glad he's our quarterback, I just don't see any good reason to rush getting him signed when he's already tied to us for 2 more years. Fortunately the F.O. does'nt make decisions at the whim of fans, or J.C. may have already been cut before he had a chance to show what he could do this year. We could sign him to a big contract after 1 great year like Seattle did with Alexander. I can't remember, how'd that work out?:) Hopefully he finishes strong and gets a good contract. What's the rush?

If we were smart, we'd take Jason while he's hot and still has some value, and see if we could'nt trade him and Rock Cartwright to the Jets for Marcus Mason and an as-yet-to-be-determined-over-rated-preseason-player-to-be-named-later. Third string running backs who would barely get off the bench and can't play special teams are at a premium in this league. That's what I think......yeah..........dude.

No way JC signs an extension during this season.

Reason #1 The Front Office needs to see him finish this season the way he started so that they can justify giving him franchise QB money.

It doesn't suck at all, the market is what it is. JC will just reap the benefits of his great play with a big check (soon), as any other QB of his talent level which happens to be much higher than rodgers. Just like the unproven knucklehead in the thread title getting that kinda cash. JC should do much better than that with his new contract, no discounts. You have to pay the man market value.

This is one of the best things thats ever happened on Dans watch, hes found a QB after looking high and low for 10 years. For the Redskins to finally have a franchise QB they can build this team around, now Danny boy will simply have to pull out that checkbook.

I think Tuesday is the deadline to sign extensions that increase salary for this current season. It would be pretty cool to beat Pittsburgh and then send JC into the bye week with a nice fat wallet. I don't think it will be a distraction at all. He deserves it, mid-season extensions happen all the time, just pay him. LaCanfora thinks he's gonna get Big Ben type money, or more. In the $40M guaranteed range with a max value around $100M. Sounds like Vinny has no interest in paying him until after the season:

WOW good article GM . . . unless JC leads the skins to a SB win or atleast a 12-4 season with a SB appearance i dont think he should get big ben 100M money. But, like the article says, Eli is going to sign a whooper of a contract and JC and segal could def argue they are in that range and not aaron rodgers value.

I say wait till the offseason, if JC continues to do well but we dont put it all together this year give him rodgers type money; if he leads us to a SB appearance with great play then give him eli/big ben money.

I am really scared to see what the giants are going to overpay for eli.

Jason will get a big contract because he deserves one. If it becomes a cap problem, I would'nt be surprised to see them rework it. Jason seems like the kind of guy who would go for that to help the team. I think Cooley did the same thing did'nt he? Either way I think you have to see how the season ends before you make an offer.

Well to be more specific this is the part of the good thing that sucks. I'm certain that the rest of you don't think that I thought Jason Campbell playing well was a bad thing :) I don't know though, I mean part of me is a little worried about the fact that we might have to choose between Grif, Washington, and Springs next year as well as the fact that we have the whole labor union debacle going on. However by no means am I against paying Campbell what he's worth, instead I'm just bummed that we might not be able to have it all, I mean what happens when I play as the Redskins on Madden next year?

If the Skins make a deep playoff run, he will definitely be able to demand more than Romo or Rogers, epecially if Romo still doesn't have a playoff victory.

The fact that it [URL="http://blogs.nfl.com/2008/11/04/contract-deadline-passes-with-no-deals-done"]didn’t show up on a computer system[/URL] available to teams prompted some to conclude that the deal wasn’t completed before the November 3 deadline for counting 2008 salary increases against the 2008 salary cap.
So the [URL="http://www.profootballtalk.com/category/rumor-mill/#"]Packers[/URL] were able to take advantage of this tweak in the rules.
And did they ever.
Rodgers’ 2008 base salary was increase from $680,000 to a whopping $23.7 million. Since half the 2008 season is over, he’ll receive [URL="http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/ic/blogs/insider/index.shtml"]$12.9 million in total 2008 base salary[/URL]. (The numbers were first reported by Rob Demovsky of the [I]Green Bay Press-Gazette[/I].)
Rodgers also is due to receive a $7.42 million roster bonus in early 2009, which as we’re told is fully guaranteed for skill and injury.
Per Demovsky, the deal includes non-guaranteed base salaries of $680,000 in 2009, $6 million in 2010, $7.25 million in 2011, $8 million in 2012, $9.25 million in 2013, and $10.5 million in 2014.
In the end, Rodgers’ cap number for 2008 went from $1.7 million to $13.9 million. And this means that the Packers are now well above the spending minimum — and that they still have more than $8 million or so to spend in 2008, if they so choose.
