Most Talented Redskin Team You Have Seen?

What team is the most talented, not neccessarily results, but talented team you have seen as a Redskins fan? I have been a fan since '81 and my top 3 are the '82 team that lost to the Raiders in the Super Bowl, the '00 team that completely crapped the bed and went 8-8 and this year's team. All teams have holes (the Pats and Panthers certainly did last year) and that's where coaching and talent make up the gap.. If things come together, it could be special here this year or next.. Thoughts?

aehs77 09-07-2004 02:43 PM

the 99 team definately could have taken it all

Redskins_P 09-07-2004 02:53 PM

the 91 team was by far the most talented. we went 14-2, had top ranked offense and defense. remember the capital defense?

ChounsMan 09-07-2004 03:12 PM

The team that Rypien QB'd.

You had the posse & a D that was down right evil!

Wilbur Marshall was a head hunter :dallas:

MTK 09-07-2004 03:18 PM

The '91 team had 8 pro bowlers I think, and probably could have had a few more.

I still can't believe that team was left off ESPN's top 25 teams of the last 25 years. What a crime.

JWsleep 09-07-2004 03:28 PM

Agreed. 1991. (Though the team that lost to the Raiders had a great year.)

If I recall, Wilbur Marshall didn't even make the pro-bowl. Yeah, ESPN was lame there. Where is the respect?

Redskins_P 09-07-2004 03:46 PM

Amen.

Beemnseven 09-07-2004 03:53 PM

The '83 team went 14-2. The two losses were by a combined 2 points.

31-30 to Dallas, and 48-47 to Green Bay.

Of course, we all know what happened against the Raiders. How did they ever lose that game especially considering how great the Skins were that season?

jbcjr14 09-07-2004 04:01 PM

The 91 team was the best overall team ever fielded. They were almost unbeatable.

BIGREDSKINFAN63 09-07-2004 04:22 PM

the best redskins teams i ever saw were the 91 team, which could have easily went 16-0 had they really wanted to,the 83 team they had the huge brain fart in the super bowl to the raiders, and most of you guys can't remember this team but the 72 team that lose to the dolphins in the superbowl was damn good.kilmer, curt knight, larry brown, charley taylor, jack pardee, richie petibone, pat fisher, chris hanburger, and diron talbert played their asses off all year long.not to mention jerry smith(rip) and mike bass.the 82 team that beat the dolphins was pretty good too.if the 1999 team would have had a coach that had guts they would have won a few more games.

REDSKIN2 09-07-2004 04:35 PM

I think that the 83 team that lost to the Raiders in terms of on paper talent was not only the best team in Redskins history but maybe NFL History more so than the 1984 49ers who went 15-1. In my over 20 years of watching NFL football, I just don't remember a team that was so explosive and loaded and deep on both the offensive and defensive and special teams sides of the ball. It's too bad they totally came undone in SB 18.

But I think the official title of the Skins best team ever goes to the 91 team. In the end they got it done and the 83 team didn't. On paper talent alone doesn't get it done.

Very simple our secondary was horrible, Green was in his first year and still learning, the rest of the guy's couldn't cover if their lives depended on it, we just out scored every one that year.

I think this year's team over all, could be as talented as any team Gibb's has coached.

itvnetop 09-07-2004 05:08 PM

the 91 team dominated in every facet of the game!

SKINSnCANES 09-07-2004 05:21 PM

I think you could argue the 91 team was one of the best ever for any team.

I watched a special on the NFL network on them and I forgot how dominating they were. Didnt they shut out the other team for like 6 or 8 weeks? That either half the season, or nearly half went by without the other team even scoring on them.

SmootSmack 09-07-2004 05:46 PM

A couple of stats about that 1983 team that I don't think have been mentioned here and are truly jaw dropping stats-first of all they scored well over 500 points. It might still be a record, unless the Rams broke it recently. And the other amazing stat is a +43 turnover ratio. Think about that. +43! That's just sick

Paintrain 09-07-2004 05:58 PM

My bad, I "forgot" about the '91 team.. I don't consider Rypien supremely talented, he was just amazing that year so that's why I ignored them.. That was a great team though..

Actually the viking's broke it.

Gmanc711 09-07-2004 06:27 PM

1991 or 1999 teams are the only ones I have seen. I was still like 6 in 91 so I didnt really understand.

monk81 09-07-2004 06:58 PM

Although personality wise the 82 were my favorite, the 91 team was no slouch either.
I have the SuperBowl Program (no I didn't go to the game, I ordered it from the NFL)
pretty remarkable.....Ernest Byner was the Redskin's primary ball carrir and gained 1,048 yds for the 3rd time in his 8 year career and was selected to his second pro-bowl. Then comes Ricky Ervins, Ervins led all NFC rookie running backs with 680 yds. In short yardage the Skins relied on Riggs, usally supported by a trio of tight ends. Riggs in the warhead in the Skins Jumbo set. The tight ends, Don Warren, Ron Middleton, Terry Orr, and James Jenkins figure prominetly in the Redskins blocking scheme. Of Orr's 10 receptions 4 were for touchdowns. Because of the protection Rypien receives he is rarely flushed from the pocket. The Redskins vertical passing attack includes deep pass patterns, frequently on play-action, set up by a numbing ball control ground game. The primary WR targets Art Monk and Gary Clark who combined for 141 catches and 18 touchdowns in the 91 season. When the Skins go in a 3rd receive set the 2 are joined by Ricky Sanders, a sure handed veteran who contributed 45 receptions and 5 touchdowns in the regular season. Rypien enjoys the best pass protection in the NFL. He was sacked only 7 times all season. Rypien blossomed in 91 when he fully embraced the disciplined system of head coach Joe Gibbs. He quit forcing passes into double coverage and threw the ball away in the face of a heavy rush. The Redskins defense ranked 3rd in the NFL against the run.The D line was a solid group-Charles Mann, Fred Stokes, Eric Williams, and Tim Johnson. LBs-Andre Collins and Wilber Marshall. Danny Copeland and Brad Edwards were the pair of free agent safeties, both sure tacklers, who aggressively come up and support the run defense. Special teams-like a fine wine Chip Lohmiller gets better each year, he lad the NFC in scorring and field goals in 1990, in 1991 shared the field goal lead with Miami's Pete Stoyanovich. Brian Mitchell was 2nd in the league on punt returns, and 8th in the NFC in kickoff returns. Gibbs and his superb coaching staff (Richie Petitbon deserves special mention on defense) have taken these disparate parts and made them into a powerful force. This is a team that plays even better than the sum of it's considerable parts because it plays together, because it is always well prepared, because it almost never makes costly errors.
MY NOTE--Let's hope Gibbs, coaching staff, and team do it again like they did in 91...
:D :httr:

You're right. I knew it was one of them dome teams. Has anyone topped the +43 turnover ratio?

Riggo44 09-07-2004 09:34 PM

I would have to go with the 91' team. I watched the Playyoffs and Super Bowls in 82'&83' but was in 2nd and 3rd grade so I really didn't appreciate how great they were at the time. The 91' season was awsome.
I can remember the season starting out with an absolute ass kickin of Detroit. And it didn't seem to stop untill we got to Minnesota. The lose to the Cowboys was the only real lose all season! And it figures it was to a Cowboy team that won like 3 games! When we lost to Philly it was the last game of the season and we had allready clinched home feild thru out the playoffs and were resting alot of are starters.
I got to see that team beat up on the L.A Lams here is Anaheim that year. That was the last time I saw Gibbs on the sideline in person. I can't wait untill Sep 27th. To see him down on the sidelines again! D.C here I come.

91' team

The 91 team hands down.

Still had the hogs
Solid WR's in the Posse
Great blocking TE in Donnie Warren
Great Solid QB and RB's
Solid D'line, CB's and LB's

But there is one thing that we had and for the past 11 years we were missing, a solid Saftey, in 91 we had Brad Edwards a monster saftey.

GoSkins! 09-07-2004 09:41 PM

The offensive line for the 91 team was unbelievable. The guys played together as a unit in a way that has never been duplicated. Rypien was not a great quarterback. Gibbs created a situation where Rypien could set back in the pocket and survey the field and pick it apart without having to consider the pass rush. Like Gibbs said, there are about 4 or 5 guys out there that can play QB in the NFL if you can't protect them... but if you do protect them there are about 40 or 50 guys!
Just think... we have the Gibbs protection schemes and a vet, mobile, effiecint QB in Brunnel. This year or next could end up being a very special year for the Redskins! :grouphug:

Best Team - '83
Team that was most successful - '91
My Favorite - '72-'73 The cast of characters "The Over the Hill Gang" Sonny, Billy, Larry Brown, Charlie Haraway, Charlie Taylor, Roy Jefferson, Len HAuss, Chrish Hamburger, Mo Pottios, Ron McDole, Jack PArdee, Pat Fisher, Ken Houston, Brig Owens, Bragg, Knight, Malanchuck. These are just a few names I could go on and on. This team in my opinion was awsome.

If you can't name the players please don't list your favorite team based on their record alone. The most talented team Joe Gibbs has ever coached was the 1982 team. Look at this line-up: (The Hogs) Joe Jacoby, Russ Grimm, Jeff Bostic, George Starke and Mark Murphy. DT ( The Gently Giant) Dave Butz. DE's Dexter Manley and Darryl Grant. ( The Smurfs) Alvin Garrett, Virgil Seay and Charlie Brown. (THE ART MONK) TE's Clint Didier , Don Warren and Rick Walker Seconday(The Pearl Harbor Crew) Vernon Dean, Tony Peters, Barry Wilburn and Mark Murphy. (The Diesel) John Riggins. HB Joe Washington LB's Rich Milot, Neal Olkewicz and Monte Coleman And last but not least the most talented punt/kick off returner I have ever seen, 7-time pro bowler Mike Nelms. Show a Redskins team with this line-up. Remember, this team won the our first Superbowl and it was Joe Gibbs's second season as Head Coach.

I beg your pardon. Before Brad Edwards there was Mark Murphy (No.29). This Safety could bring the wood. He was the mentor to Darrell Green in the the 1983 season.

OK then please follow suit. If you can't name the players don't say anything. Pearl Harbor crew started with 3 safties, Mark Murphy, Curtis Jordon and Ken Coffey and that was from '84-'86 and not '82. In fact they really weren't called the Pearl Harbor till '85 when Rapheal Cherry and Curtis Jordan were our deep links. Coffey had snorted his way out of the league by then. Dean and Wilburn were corners along with D. Green. Curtis Jordan was the one who came up with the monikor.

So lets get facts straight if you are going to make a statement like this.

MTK 09-08-2004 08:50 AM

Brad Edwards wasn't what I would call a monster safety, but he fit the scheme well and played smart. He wasn't a bad hitter either, remember that pop he had on Don Bebbe in the SB? He jarred loose a sure TD catch.

OK guy's sombody has to straighten the both of you out, Murphy was a skin from 77, to 84, dean, and coffey, were both drafted in 82, Peter's played with us from 79, to 82, then again in 84, and 85, Jeris White was with us from 80, to 82, Wilburn wasen't drafted till 85, Cutris Jordan played with us from 81, to 86.

The starting lineup in SB 82 in the defensive backfield was, Dean, and White, at corner's, and Murphy, and Peter's, at saftey, I hope this help's. :argue:

I agree but the statement was about the Pearl Harbor Crew of '82. It didn't exist untill '85. Cherry, Jordan, Dean, Willbon, and Green Tony Peters did not play as far as I remember in '84 and '85. He also snorted his way out of the league. Am I wrong??
