Portis unlikely to play sunday,BETTS to start?

got this off the NFL NETWORK website.check if you wish.
it's by the AP.

[I] "I was hoping today that there would be a little more optimism, and there's not," coach Jim Zorn said. "He's still questionable. I would say there's no change today. I was looking for another jump, but there wasn't."

Portis sprained his left knee in the 23-6 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers before last week's bye.

With Portis ailing, Ladell Betts appears set to start Sunday. Betts has missed the last three games with a sprained knee, but he was on the field in steady rain for Thursday's practice.

"Betts looked good," Zorn said. "He's got a brace on, but made some cuts. That was encouraging."

Shaun Alexander would start if both Portis and Betts are unable to play.

Zorn also said he doesn't expect defensive tackle Anthony Montgomery (Achilles) to play, and was pessimistic about Marcus Washington (shoulder). He also said he expects Shawn Springs (calf) to be available, but Springs did not practice and said he doesn't expect to practice again Friday. If Springs doesn't play, new signing DeAngelo Hall would have a greater role in his Redskins debut.

Devin Thomas missed practice with an illness. Fellow rookie receiver Malcolm Kelly, who has been battling knee problems all season, practiced but probably won't play Sunday.

"I don't believe I'm going to activate him," Zorn said. "He's so far behind. I'm just glad he's out there

Good info.

I think we should merge all these injury/Portis/Alexander/Betts threads into one. There are like 4 or 5 threads open right now discussing essentially the same thing.

Interesting in the thread title you have a ? at the end, but it doesn't show up, on the thread title list page(or whatever the heck you call it) so it looks like you are making a statement that Betts is starting.
Clearly Betts is still questionable too, and I hope that the game planning is based on SA with heavy doses of Rock

This sucks! Portis owns that team in texas AND I got him on my fantasy team.............I'm even playing for the division lead in this game and now my best player can't go! This really really sucks!

who knows?a miracle could always happen and CP may get to play.
think positive!

With LB, SA, Rock, and Sellers we should have plenty of talent to run the ball.

Man I really tought you guys scored in the draft with Kelly and Thomas but so far it hasn't been good... Thomas has shown some flashes but kelly hasn't seen the field

Well it ended up another wasted draft for us for the most part with regards to the offense. All I keep thinking about is Taylor Jacobs and how we kept him around and I think he only played in like what 4-5 games for us? It probably was more, but not much more than that. Our Wr corp minus Moss has been somewhat of a disappointment this season.

Re: Portis unlikely to play sunday,BETTS to start

I think Betts can/will have a good day. Let's not forget how well he played a couple of years ago when Portis was out for an extended period. It's also important to note that Zorn kept the run blocking as it was under Gibbs so his absence this year shouldn't hurt him too much regarding the new offense. Then there is Shaun Alexander who has had some HUGE games playing in prime time during his career and he definitely has something to prove. I hate having Portis out, but I really like our depth at RB (Cartwright can't be forgotten either...dude runs hard as hell). I think the Skins hopes really rest on Campbell and Moss getting back on track (and a Cooley sighting would be nice too).

HAIL!!

Betts has at least one more 100 yarder in his career, although I'm not sure it's going to be Sunday.

Re: Portis unlikely to play sunday,BETTS to start

hmmmm...I hope Betts can carry the load, if he's heathly. Lets not forget a few years back Betts had a thousdand yard season when Portis was out. While i would love to have CP out there sunday, i dont want to risk is health. We are going to need him for home strecth of our season if we want a shot at the playoffs.....SO i believe it gona to have to be up to Campbell to lead us to victory

Re: Portis unlikely to play sunday,BETTS to start

I think that if CP can't go and Betts is coming off injury, Alexander could have his time to shine in 08 .. i'm sure he's chomping at the bit to have a monster game on Sunday night and prove he has some gas left in the tank .. don't get me wrong i'd love to have CP play, but it's looking worse each day. We have depth, that's why we have all those RB's .. let's see if it can pay off for us !!

Cooley needs some red zone TD's .. i'm thinking 2 would be nice

I think we're going to see a RB by committee....if Betts was 100% he'd be the main back, but he prob won't be.

man.. dang

hopefully we can still attack, maybe have a bit more of an electric offense, let the pass open up the run for betts and crew

Re: Portis unlikely to play sunday,BETTS to start

listen carefully. Portis will not miss this game. They are going to have to put him in restraints to keep from getting in the game. If he's hurting that bad, I don't want him playing. On the other hand, I really don't like our chances without him.

30 degrees in DC at game time? BAD Hammy weather

Re: Portis unlikely to play sunday,BETTS to start

I honestly think that Alexander should start because he might have a breakout game, and he finally has a chance to be a starter again. With betts coming off an injury, this could be out best option.

As crazy as this idea seems, it may be one that the Skins should consider.
True, Alexander hasn't done jack...but that is coming off the bench.
Is Betts better?...of course.
But if Betts is injured and can have a setback....we may have to deal with Alexander running the ball the rest of the year.
We need to have either Betts or Portis available long term and if it is only 1 game to fix Betts up to be the man...we should consider it...."CRINGE'

WTF is wrong with the Redskins trainers? We had two weeks and it seems according to the wires that they are hurtin more than they were after that beatdown. I don't know the Dallas Cryboys are a depserate wounded animal so if we don't come with our A game, I can't see us coming out on top come Sunday nite.

How can I say this without being a complete asshole...

Nothing is wrong with the trainers. You can have the best trainers in the World working in a world-class facility, and still have lingering issues like these. That is simply the hazards of playing the game.

Re: Portis unlikely to play sunday,BETTS to start

The only reason we are "worse" is because of Portis' injury. Santana, JT, LB, and I am sure ALOT of other players who were feeling burned are recharged and ready to go. Football, especially the way Portis plays it, is a violent sport, we will see a refreshed team coming out Sunday night. (of course the same holds true for the cowboys...)

IS Santana going to play? I don't hear jack up here in Detroit, but last I heard he was questionable. I guess I have to get on NFL.com.

From the interview I saw in the last day or so with Tana. He is slowly recovering from the hammy pull. But is ready to go and will be the #1 wide out Sunday to light up the girls.

BTW--I really hope Betts is ready. He's had some big late season games for us. Now would be a great time to get him back.
