Cooley, our answer to Jeremy Shockey

I really like this guy. He caught 2 passes in the first series of the Atlanta game.

It took 3 or more guys to taclkle him.

Now I can't dicide whether to get a Coles Jersey , a Cooley Jersey or a Sean Taylor Jersey.

illdefined 09-08-2004 02:40 PM

be the first to rock a Cooley jersey!

Big C 09-08-2004 03:01 PM

lol not many ppl outside the utah and redskins viewing area will know who he is, but i hope that will change

sonny-j-no9 09-08-2004 03:25 PM

go with a sonny j jersey, dont have to worry about him changing teams. :)

offiss 09-08-2004 03:28 PM

When we drafted him and I saw the highlight's of him, I thought he was much better than people where giving him credit for, take a look at all the h-back's / TE's, and this kid win's the starting job, if he stay's healthy he will be the kind of player that other teams hate, because he will be a clutch player, I disagree with the Shockey comparison though, he's much smarter.

bridaman51 09-08-2004 03:30 PM

I have looked for a Cooley Jersey (espcially when he ran plum over that falcon) and I am not able to find one.

PSUskinsfan11 09-08-2004 03:35 PM

I don't know if Cooley is our Shockey. I hate Shockey but he is top 3 in the league and I don't know if I see Cooley reaching that level.

Big C 09-08-2004 03:58 PM

shockey is much, much faster than cooley

MTK 09-08-2004 04:08 PM

Cooley doesn't have the same skills as Shockey, let's face it when Shockey is healthy he's a freak, the only TE's that are in the same boat are Heap, Gonzalez and most likely KWII will join them. Cooley won't be featured in this offense like those guys are, if he sees 30 catches and 4 TD's that will be a quality season for him.

That being said, Cooley looks like he's going to be a great fit for this offense. He can block, he's smart, he can catch and make some things happen after the catch.

Gibbs knows TE's and H-backs. He obviously saw something in Cooley that made him feel comfortable enough to pass on a monster like KWII, take Taylor instead and trade up to grab Cooley later on.

i seem to be disagreeing with you the past few posts ive seen that you made. NO WAY HE'S TOP 3. cant be possible cause he cant stay on the field.

no particular order:

tony g
mcmichael
boo williams
crumpler
bubba franks
heap
billy miller
freddie jones

just to name a few i think are the same caliber and some much better based on blocking, recieving and last but not least DURABILITY

jrocx69 09-08-2004 04:21 PM

shockey = media hype

Big C 09-08-2004 04:34 PM

um, i recall shockey burning the hell out of us. he has the big play potential that only gonzalez and heap have.

lol, youre crazy if you think Shockey is just media hype. When has the media ever said one good thing about shockey. They jsut talk aobut his love for boobs and how he runs his mouth. But you cant argue with the fact that he pushed linebackers down like they were stickfigures and makes plays happen. Hes had the injury bug ever since he was in the NFL but ify ou think he is overrated and not that good then you need to start watching football more, then make an assesment.

amen

SmootSmack 09-08-2004 06:04 PM

Shockey is a fine player but I don't think the fact that he plays in New York should be overlooked. Maybe it's not media hype per se but he definitely gets more attention playing in New York than he would in Seattle for example

Daseal 09-08-2004 06:04 PM

Shockey is a gifted player, as much as I hate him. Cooley will be a great player for us and I think was the right decesion. He fits into our offense perfectly!

That Guy 09-08-2004 06:32 PM

cooley would be different... by year's end there'll be millions of ST jerseys floating around.

SKINSnCANES 09-08-2004 06:33 PM

He was the right decision because Cooley can play hback the way Gibbs wants an hback to play. Its almost better for us that people will over look cooley and not worry as much about him. It will be easier for him to get screen or go out for passes since teams wont be eyeing him. plus I dont think anyone is upset about our pick of taylor, heh

That Guy 09-08-2004 06:35 PM

cooley is a blocker and safety valve, heap and shockey are more like having extra receivers...

joecrisp 09-08-2004 06:40 PM

Cooley's tackle-busting performance against Atlanta aside, he's not the same kind of player that Shockey is, in several respects.

Cooley's very much a Joe Gibbs kind of player-- very humble and hardworking; selfless in the idea that he will eagerly do whatever is asked of him, for the benefit of the team. He's the kind of lunchpail, blue-collar player whose love for the game far exceeds his hunger for fame or stardom. Take all of the trite and cliche'ed expressions that describe "throwback" players, roll them into one wide-eyed country boy from Logan, Utah, and you've got Chris Cooley-- so prototypically the Gibbs player that he certainly must've sprung into creation from the Hall of Fame coach's idealistic vision of what constitutes a "Redskin".

Shockey, on the other hand, was born of the arrogance and hubris of the Miami program: a supremely gifted athlete with a hyperbolic sense of self. While his toughness and grit recall visions of Mackey and Bavaro, those admirable qualities are often overshadowed by Shockey's pervasively obnoxious and inflated sense of self-worth. Along with Owens, Keyshawn and fellow Hurricane Kellen Winslow II, Shockey has come to represent all that is wrong with today's "bling-oriented", me-first NFL player.

Cooley counters Shockey's shockingly absurd pomposity with an understated, intelligent and endearingly simplistic approach to both life and the game he loves. You won't see many flags being thrown in Cooley's direction for bone-headed penalties like personal fouls or taunting. Nor will you hear him making a fool of himself off the field. Like Shockey, Cooley possesses a youthful exuberance for the game, but unlike "The Hotheaded One", Cooley also possesses tremendous respect for the game, for his fellow players and coaches, and for the fans. Redskins fans will take pride in Cooley, not only for his performance on the field, but also for his conduct both on and off of it.

Cooley won't likely catch 50 or 60 passes a year, but his impact on the field will most assuredly be felt, and defenses that fail to account for his abilities as a blocker and as a receiver will most certainly regret it. Coach Gibbs will employ Cooley's versatile talents in ways that lesser coaches would never have imagined, and while he will never garner the kind of attention that teammates like Portis and Coles draw from defenses and the media, he will be every bit the workhorse that draws this offense forward. It will be Cooley's blocks that spring Portis for extra yardage, his subtle exploitation of holes in coverage that frees up Coles for the game-breaking reception, and his grinding, tackle-busting runs after the catch that breaks the will of defenders...

...and he'll do it with that self-effacing grin that tells you he's just as surprised by it all as everybody else is.

I like Chris Cooley. He's a good guy.

Jeremy Shockey can kiss my Redskin-lovin' ass!

see the whole playin in ny argument doesnt really work for me, since its usually the good teams that gt the hype, and the giants havent been good since hes been there...
see the whole playin in ny argument doesnt really work for me, since its usually the good teams that gt the hype, and the giants havent been good since hes been there...
when were the giants bad last before last year? 2000 they were in the superbowl. Thats close enough to make yoru argument invalid. The giants were picked by many to go to the superbowl last year but had almost every start injured during the season. NY gets hype because its NY, and the media in NY will make a story out of anything.

Big C 09-08-2004 07:22 PM

2000??? wow thats a long time ago. no1 has talked about the giants ina while. on espn, they rarely mentioned the giants until they got manning...

SKINSnCANES 09-08-2004 07:28 PM

four seasons ago ?!?!? youre basing an argument about how the Giants havent had a good team in forever on how logn then? Do you consider one year a long time.

SKINSnCANES 09-08-2004 07:31 PM

they were 10-6 the yera before last.

SmootSmack 09-08-2004 07:40 PM

Eli Manning is a big story because of his bloodlines and because of the fact that he demanded a trade. But do you think it would be as big a story if he had demanded a trade to Cleveland for example. And do you think the chance to play in New York didn't play a big factor in his family's decision to demand a trade?

Big C 09-08-2004 08:00 PM

when did i say they havent been good in forever? they havent been a good team since shockey was on the team...meaning the hype isnt on ny as much as usual

MTK 09-08-2004 08:02 PM

Cooley definitely has the potential to be one of those 'true Redskins' that Gibbs speaks of.

oldswill 09-08-2004 08:05 PM

shocky is'nt the save all that the giant girls made him out to be early on. but he is certainly top five

Daseal 09-08-2004 08:07 PM

Manning didn't demand a trade, behind closed doors he quietly asked that the Chargers not draft him, I certainly don't blame him.

Dirtbag 09-08-2004 08:32 PM

Cooley vs Taylor jerseys

My custom-made Sean Taylor jersey arrived two weeks ago, and I must say it looks sweet. (Of course, it would look better on me if I was 6'2 and wore a visor, but hey, I digress.) I ordered it because I think Taylor is going to be a fearsome DB for the Skins for a long, long time and I want to be able to say "I got his jersey before he even played a down for us."

A Cooley jersey would be awesome, too. I think he'll turn into a modern-day Clint Didier.

jrocx69 09-08-2004 09:09 PM
Hes had the injury bug ever since he was in the NFL but ify ou think he is overrated and not that good then you need to start watching football more, then make an assesment.
i was thinking the same thing about you. anyways, his blocking is suspect, durability is a horrible issue for his so called "toughness", and if you dont know the names i put up earlier, then you dont know what a TE is. more then half of their job is blocking. and being that im from NY, you cant tell me anything. Ive seen more of what the media dont show of him. with the skins,, i believe terrell was crunched more than our linebackers were.

That Guy 09-08-2004 09:44 PM

i'd trust cooley to block over shockey or KWII...

love them hogs 09-08-2004 10:46 PM

I really like what little I have seen of Cooley so far.I believe that Gibbs has found himself a diamond in the rough and isnt trying to let on.

Big C 09-08-2004 11:35 PM

love them hogs, thats a funny name, it make me laff, i like

SKINSnCANES 09-08-2004 11:48 PM
i'd trust cooley to block over shockey or KWII...
Shockey is a great blocker. Hes huge and bullies people around

im4skins 09-09-2004 12:11 AM

Cooley is a typical role player. Smart kid that works hard and tries his best to stay on the same page as the rest of the team. He doesn't believe he is bigger than the game. He will be the type of player that stays in the league for a long time and be productive for whatever team he plays for. I'd take him on my team over shockey anyday, except on fantasy draft day.
