Here's my take on the game - what do you guys think?
 

Firstly, I missed the first 10 mins. live TV - Sky Sports lost the satellite feed back here (great job guys, first live game of the season and all!), but heard how it was going.

I'm breaking it down by unit first:

OL - way to go initially, but didn't stick it to the Buccs DL all game. Great 1st and 4th qtrs though. The pass blocking was excellent, although Brunell took a couple of nasty shots. Almost exactly what you want from your line. Overall 8/10

RB's - I can't blame Portis for not running all over them. The OL didn't open holes consistently and the Buccs reorganised pretty well. But overall he had a great game. Betts looked good spelling him. Heads up play from Morton on the fumble too. Overall 8/10 (I give Portis a 9 individually)

WR's - Gardner always seems to have 1 bad play for every 4 or 5 good ones. Overall he did OK, but he's got to catch more 3rd down passes. Coles was quiet, but I saw him double teamed a few times, and so much for the 5yd contact rule... Overall 6/10

TE's/FB's - Cooley looks like the real deal. Remind me a LOT of Didier. Sellers is blocking well. Looks like 1992 out there! :biggthump Overall 9/10

QB - Brunell did enough, without being spectacular. Gutsy running and scrambling, but with that much time in the pocket, should have convertedmore. Not sure he should have thrown the deep ball to Cooley - if he had time to set himself, yeah, but he didn't and was lucky it wasn't an INT. Over 50% comp. and no INT's so overall 7/10.

DL - Who said we had no pass rush? OK blitzing is obviously helping, but the run D and good pass rush won this game for us. I won't single out anyone on the line as no individual stood out for me - they were all great! Overall 9/10

LB's - Arrington and Washington were excellent, but Pierce stood out for me. And he's 2nd string! Great INT - was thrown at him but he took it at it's height and made sure he had it before he ran. Arrington's tip would have been play of the season if he'd only managed to bat it to himself for the INT - he'd have gone all the way. Overall 9/10

Secondary - Not exactly shutdown, but virtually eliminated the deep ball. Smoot was a monster and Springs worrked away nicely on the other side. Safety play was, well, simply brilliant. Bowen may have found out how to play. Heads up for the FF and a great sack. Taylor needs work but he has time to learn - he took a bad angle on Galloway, but nearly caught him anyway. Lott stepped in nicely. Overall 9/10

ST - Tupa was booming them out there. Pinned them back enough times to help the D. Hall only just missed the 50 yarder and otherwise did as asked. Coverage needs work but we only gave up one real big gain. Overall 7/10 (kickers push the score up here.

Coach - 20/10 :)

The Buccs are no slouches and their D adjustments showed that (Kiffen is the 2nd best D coach in the league - you know who's #1! ;) ). I think the coaches kept cool (except for Williams celebrations) and that kept the team confident. The D looks scary and the running game is doing what it should. Brunell gave me enough to feel confident the passing game will improve, and if Ramsey learns from this guy, I can see Gibbs getting 2 more SB's with different QB's. :biggthump

I'd give the whole team 8/10, but we need this to be a start, not a blip, so they better not forget it's only game 1. With JG, I doubt that will happen.

one thing I noticed was the amount of zip brunnel had on the ball. nice to see he still has it.
also, it was awesome that the line did'nt give up a sack; but even though portis had over 140 yards it still seems they could improve on run blocking: or maybe it was that the buc's d-line ws alot better that expected, what do you think?

Only thing I would sya is that Portis did run all over them.

29 carries, 146 yards (longest 64) 1TD.

They won't want to see him again for a while.

If I'd recorded the game (except the first 10 mins! >:) I'd check out the run plays again. We negated them at the LOS, so we only had a couple of negative runs, but we didn't get enough push consistently. Still 149 yards is not to be sniffed at.

Brunell does have zip left (no reason to belive he shouldn't have as he's had virtually a season's rest) but he was lucky on 2 throws not to be picked off. He needs to guage his deep throws better - he could have had Coles and Cooley for TD's.

For the most part I agree with you, but I think that the Special Teams may have been 5/10. Big improvements in DL, OL pass protection, QB and TACKLING.

Great work by the OL (except for a couple of miscues on the handoff) some great running by Portis, we need more Cooley, ....Burnell showed leadership, can still scramble....GREAT EFFORT!!!! GOOD WORK COACHES AND TEAM!!!!!!!!

I bet qb and c are going to be working on their snaps together next week. also, st deserves a 5/10 especially on blocking and tackling

joe gibbs showed us all why he's won in everything he's done,he's well prepared for whatever he does.as soon as he got through with the post game speech his mind was on the ny giants.i thought the whole team played good,the special teams gets a c though.they have a lot to work on imo.i'd give the team an 85 out of 90.a lot of the bad throws and drops were first game nerves.it should be better next week against the nyg.the giants are being thrown all over the place by the iggles.

My random thoughts on the game:

-Brunell still has plenty left in his tank, he managed the game and that's exactly what Gibbs wants from him.

-Portis, wow. 64 yarder right off the bat set the tone. The guy is the most dynamic playmaker Gibbs has ever had and he's going to put him to good use.

-Nice to see Rod Gardner step up, he did have a couple of drops though, he's got to kill that nasty habit already.

-HUGE props to the offensive line (that includes the TE's and h-backs of course). No sacks allowed, NONE. What a difference a year makes, huh?! Brunell had all freakin' day to throw at times. He did get hit pretty hard twice, but all in all a super solid job by this unit and they're only going to improve as the season wears on.

-More HUGE props to Gregg Williams and the rest of the defensive staff. We finally have an aggressive [u]and[/u] smart defensive attack. When guys blitzed there were always guys in the right place in coverage. The D was gang tackling all over the place and they played with an energy and enthusiasm I haven't see from a Skins D in a very, very long time. I know there's a lot of football to be played, but the D answered a bunch of questions out there today.

-Anybody wanna cut Matt Bowen now?? We can't deny he's got skills, seems that all he needed was a coaching staff to harness those skills. He was a terror on the safety blitzes.

-Gibbs really should have challenged that Brunell scramble, that wasn't even close, it was clearly a first down. Whoever is advising him in the booth didn't earn their paycheck today.

-Did you see Gibbs' reaction when the Bucs scooped up the fumble for the TD?! It didn't even faze him and that definitely rubbed off on the rest of the team.

-All in all a great day, it's been a long time since I could honestly say I had a blast watching the Skins. Smashmouth football, aggressive D and a smart team that won't beat itself... that's Gibbs, that's Redskins football!!

THREE hand off errors, horrible ST play (not hall/tupa), and bowen got TWO sacks, not one ;) that's pretty good for a safety.

I can only imagine what this defensive scheme would do with the Giants. I will not downplay the coaching process. I am sure that the giants will practice all week to shut down Portis. We may need to see more from Brunell and Gardner. If the league is going to cover Coles as they did today, Gardner and Cooley will have great opportunities in weeks to come. Gardner will need to catch the ball, and now the secret is out on Cooley.

Coaching...coaching...coaching is the biggest difference for us compared to last year. Especially on defense. Defense led the win...not Portis. Defense did not give up a TD! Salavea and Pierce are major surprises. Barrow might be expendable.?.?
I have to give BIG props to M. Bowen, he played great. I have been bad mouthing him all preseason and he came to play today...FINALLY!

AnonEmouse- the only one of your observations I have to disagree with you is Rod Gardner. He played a little better than OK. I saw only one drop and it was on a very low/bad pass from Brunnell. He made some clutch 3rd down catches. His size allowed him to catch a few short passes and run over his DB and make the first down. If I can admit my bad about Bowen, you might be able to say Gardner played better than OK......maybe?

Mike Sellers had two great pancake blocks.
Andre Lott had a key third down play.

The only part of the game and team of concern is center. There were a couple of mis-snaps that looked like the centers fault. but I might be wrong.

they were somebody's fault, missed exchanges shouldn't happen.

1. The defense was very impressive.

2. Matt Bowen looked good today with 2 sacks, 1 FF, and 9 total tackles.

3. The defensive line held up great against the run.

4. Special teams kick and punt coverage needs to improve considerably.

5. I was really impressed with the pass protection.

6. I was not so impressed with the run-blocking. Tampa's got a great defense, but stopping the run isn't their forte.

7. Brunell was decent, although I think our offense left the field during the 2nd and 3rd quarters.

8. Coles needs to be more involved in our offense.

9. Chris Cooley is a very impressive H-back.

10. A good win, but not a smashing debut.

RF, I think you're underestimating what happened today. You say not a smashing debut, I really beg to differ.

The Bucs aren't a pushover, they're very well coached and they always come to play.

Considering how far this team has come from just a year ago, and I couldn't be happier with today's win. And they're only going to get better as the season goes on.

Lets take a win and go now to the Giants. We should critque so we know what are faults are and RF pretty much hit them on the head :thumb:

Yeah, and Gibbs was asked about that during his press conference. He made a good point... with halftime now only 12 minutes, he has to go in quickly make any adjustments he wants... he can't waste time standing on the field answering these asine questions by the media.

Some quick thoughts I had....

1. What a pleasure seeing the Skins actually looking organize and playing with some sort of plan.

2. Portis is going to make Skins fans forget about Bailey real quick...

3. Big play nobody is talking about... Cooley's reception for a 1st down on 3rd down in 2nd half. Huge play that slowed the Bucs momentum.

4. STs have to get better. Would have allowed that other big runback if not called back by penalty.

5. Brunnell looked really good, even without the big numbers. That one early pass he threw on the rope had a lot of zip. He looks like he knows exactly what to do out there.

6. Now won't everybody shut up about Bowen!! He is a gamer and hustles 100%... he may get burned some but it's not for him not hustling. Great game.

7. Bucs only get 30 yards rushing in a close game! This defense will without doubt be one of the best in the league. Williams already has them playing as a unit.

8. Game was not nearly as close as the score. Without a few bad calls and that fumble, the score could have easily been something like 24-3.

9. Skins offense did pretty darn good against a very good Bucs defense. Offense couldn't do much in the 3rd qtr but when it counted in the 4th, everyone came thru.

I was impressed with our pass protection, excellent, the buc's will bring many look's, and for the most part we handled them all no prob. Defense, 1 word, outstanding! We handled the run better than anyone could have hoped, we do have to keep in mind that the Buc's are a horrible rushing team over the last couple of year's, this D will get better as player's become more comfortable with the new system, and teammates, as well. Offense, Portis after the big run had to tough it out, but the Buc's are tough against the run, Gibb's has never had a back who could turn the corner like Portis, [ not even J. Washington] I defiently think Portis was worn out heading into the forth quarter, he should be ready to go 4 quater's next week, he's still rounding into game shape.

Brunnell, was ok, he did what Gibb's wanted, manage the game, and don't do anything stupid, and he did, Gardner continues to irritate me, he makes a great play, and then drop's a simple one, he's a guy I don't want the ball thrown at when the game is on the line, to unreliable, cooley look's to be one of these guy's with fly paper for hand's, and he can block, Morton isn't impressing me with his return's, he can't power his way up the gut when the big play isn't there, to often he does nothing, great job with the penalties, it's been a while since we see a flag on the ground and it's not on us, it's a nice feeling, great job by the fan's, over 90,000 tremendous, although I don't feel that fed ex will ever intimidate like RFK, looking forward to next week!

Biggest plus was the disciplined play. Few penalties, and few mistakes. Brunell's underthrown pass to Cooley early on was an exception, as was the botched handoff that led to TB's only touchdown. Brunell should have fallen on the ball and taken the loss. Our defense has shown their ability to hold, so there is really no cause to force plays on offense.

Speaking of the defense, that has to be the second biggest bright spot of the game. They only allowed a single field goal, and even that should be blamed more on the poor special teams play leading to great field position for TB.

Portis also had a great game. It seemed to me that this was often in spite of the OL's play, not because of it. The bigger plays were the result of Portis' improvisation, cutting back against the grain instead of running into holes that should have been there, but were not. In the OL's defense, they did not give up any sacks. That has to be worth something. But I just can't get over the picture of Randy Thomas getting sat on his can, and the resulting penetration stopping Portis for a loss in the backfield. That kind of thing needs to be fixed, and I've no doubt that Bugel will be taking them to task.

In some respects, I'm glad the game wasn't the blowout that it could have (should have?) been. There are things that the team obviously still needs to learn and to work on, and squeaking one out this way gives Gibbs and co. a teaching opportunity without having to pay for it with a loss.

I thought the game was an ugly one from an offensive point of view (except for the first drive). Defensively, it was good but they will definitely have to improve. I just got done watching the Eagles game and let me tell you, they are going to be tough. Thankfully, we won't have to face them to the second half of the season.

No sacks allowed, as far as I can remember just one holding penalty-and that was Kenyatta preventing a safety. All preseason long these guys have looked sharp. The gave Brunell plenty of time to make throws. It all starts here in the trenches and the Dirtbags are a definite postive for the team right now

[I]Clinton Portis:[/I]
Even with the big holes the line gave him, he added a few yards to several plays. And he played some really smart football-for example, staying inbounds near the end of the game even though he may have gotten a few more yards had he taken it outside. He got a lot of carries today. I'll be anxious to see how that holds up. I think Betts would have seen more carries if the score wasn't close toward the end of the game

[I]Matt Bowen:[/I]
Aggressive, hard-hitting (and not on his own teammates!). And give credit to guys like Cornelius Griffin who occupied blockers clear a path for Bowen to go untouched to the QB. Heck the whole defense played great but Bowen stood out-maybe because of low expectations. And how about Walt Harris! Broke up a potential first down pass, apparently he didn't need any preseason

[B]Lowlights[/B]

[I]Special Teams:[/I]
The coverage unit continues to be a big problem for this team. Something needs to be done or someone going to bust loose for a TD against the Skins. And Special Teams TDs can be demoralizing

[I]Rod Gardner:[/I]
First play of the game-drop. Key third down-drop. He has to be consistent. Brunell needs him to be the guy he can depend on whenever the Skins need a tough third-down.

Skins blitz last play of the game. no prevent d, just keep doing what only allowed 3 offensive points all day!
THIS WAS EXACLTY WHAT THE SKINS NEEDED.
Obviously getting Gibbs is the big difference but Williams had the d flying all over the field. Remains to be seen what they will do against a real #1 receiver.

Was it just my imagination or did I not hear Shawn Springs' name mentioned during the entire game? Yeah, he didn't make that many plays, but that was because TB wasn't throwing at him, right? That was nice, reminded me of Champ. Just line him up and we never hear from the receiver he's covering.

Yeah, but after that play, they had three more plays and had to punt. Nice catch, but it was part of a drive that went nowhere, and it wasn't crucial to the outcome of the game.

Actually, he dropped the third down pass that was low, but still catch-able, AND he had another drop on the very first play of the game -- a wideout screen. Hit him right in the hands and he dropped it.

Apart from those two plays, Gardner was serviceable. With Coles being blanketed, I was actually hoping for more from the passing game. He's the one who has to step up and pick up the slack when Coles is being doubled. Sometimes he does, sometimes he doesn't.

I agree that he will be a decent game manager for the Skins... but I don't think he will be able to step up and win a game for them if they need him to. I think Ramsey has the potential to be a game winner and I wouldn't be surprised if he got a few extra snaps with the first team this week.

You totally lost me with your OL and RB analysis, so I did not bother reading any farther. To make negative comments about the running game that netted 148 yards for Portis alone (more TOTAL rushing yards), shows me your expectations were higher than any team could live up to - especially against a quality defense like this one.

OUR "D" ONLY GAVE UP 3 POINTS, and the offense ate up a ton of clock. That was the story of the game. And, of course, the OL was EXCELLENT. With a decent spot on Brunell's run, we get more points. Without a bad call on another play we get more points. Without ANOTHER key 3rd down DROP by Gardner, we get more points.

Basically, we outplayed the hell out of them in spite of the score.

Gardner cannot be blamed entirley for the third down drop that was to the floor the ball was never really to him, I seem to rember him making a spectacular leaping catch to convert key third down at one point. I didn't see all the game in the Uk as the satalite feed was poor but one thing I did see was nearly every time Brunell threw the ball it was a gamble he was lucky not to be picked off quite a few times.

Also special teams need more work on the 54 kick return which lead to the bucs first points the first guy to get a hand on thier returner was Hall.

The game plan on defence was fantastic taking away the 5-8 yard underneath area Brad likes so much taking away his game as if he was allowed to get going he could have dinked and doinked us to death. But in the second half the Bucs started exploiting the D agressiveness as Washington and Arrington seemed to make a habit of running right by the play in an attempt to nail the QB.

Overall though I think we got it done against a quality opponent Gruden and Kiffen are always ready to play and esentially Gibbs and Williams were more than a amatch for them . Someone should really explain the challenge system to Gibbs though because we had some awful calls against us incluing the Brunell spot inside the two.

A few (too many!) observations:

Portis is the real deal. The TD was a thing of beauty: He made those CBs look like they were wading through mud. But I thought that 3rd down play right before the 2-minute warning was almost as big. He cut right, made a guy miss, and got the crucial first down that basically iced it.

Betts played well as a backup. Hope he stays healty.

I loved that Cooley catch, ragardless of when it happened. What hands! And he had a great block or two. Very nice.

The o-line protected well. The run game sputtered in the middle of the game, but Kiffen was putting 8-9 guys in the box. I thought Brunnell wasn't bad, but wasn't great. His deep throws hung up, and he didn't spred the ball around that much. But he did what he had to do for the win. Still, that fumble almost lost it for us! Come on, man! Eat it on that play! I think the O will only improve as Gibbs and co get everyone all on the same page, and the timing and chemistry kick in. Given the way TB was crowding the line, I'm surprised we didn't get a big paly action pass. It'll come.

Bowen. Wow. Who is that guy in Bowen's uniform??? Hope he sticks around!

Antonio Pierce. Awesome game tackling, covering, INT, and special teams. Lavar and Washington played well too. This is a good D for LBs, and we've got some good LBs!

Sean Taylor got burnt by Galloway, who then droped the ball and pulled a muscle. Someone up there likes this kid! As my old coach used to say: He learned an expensive lesson cheaply.

SMOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT! Great game. Great heart. Great leadership.

Coach Willliams: What a fuc*ing bad ass! Blitzing on the last play?!?! Right on! He is a great play caller. That second Bowen sack was just perfect. And he pulled back and covered at the right times as well. Sure, TB's offense is weak, but talk about setting a tone. Basically, it was a shutout: an offense TO and a special teams gaff led to the points.

The bottom line: a very nice win. Just think of last year when we'd go into the foruth with a lead. What an amazing difference. And that's becuase of Gibbs. As much as anything, he controls the clock. If you can't get on the field, you can't win. This offense is only going to get better. The D looks strong. And remember, defense wins championships!

PS: Philly looks very good. TO is for real. Still, the Giants gained like 170 yards rushing on them. The gints had their moments, especially on offense, but I think we can knock Warner back into the stone age. And Vinny too. Those old, immobile QBs better watch it. Let's just ball-control McNabb and TO off the field. The Vikes look very good. The Browns look good. Couldn't tell about Detroit and Chicago; they were playing each other. Cinncy has a decnt O and a terrible D. Curtis Martin shreaded them. Portis is licking his chops. Do the ravens even know how to play offense at all?

oh yeah, the ravens are a great offense... for the other team. Those picks helped give clevland the game. I got curtis is 2 leagues (went low cause 1300yds but only 2 tds last year), so i'm happy to see him shred the bengals. jamal on the other hand is killing me :(... both daunte and mcnabb are going to get their owners like 35+ points this week lol.

I gave them both 8/10? Not bad first game! My criticism is that the OL wasn't consistent. The 2nd and 3rd qtrs were weak, and they didn't pick it up again until the 4th. If we played 4 qtrs like we played 1 & 4, we'd have had over 200 yds rushing. I'm not complaining, merely pointing out that there's still a bit of work to do.

As for the backs, Portis too kind of went to sleep in the 2nd. He looked more lively in the 3rd, but the holes weren't there because the Buccs stepped it up and the OL didn't adjust quick enough. The adjustments in the 4th allowed him to pick it up again a little. Betts was fine in relief, and that juking run he made for the 1st down was excellent. Like I said 8/10.

If we get 9/10 from both OL and backs next week, expect the Giants to get run over like a 200mph bulldozer hit them. :biggthump

It's still too early to write off Brunell as a guy who can't make big plays for us. As he gets more comfortable working in this offense and with the WR's he's only going to improve.

Folks, we better fix the special teams!!!! If we don't, it will cost us at least 1 game this year!!!!

JG said, he will take a look at the film and already knew they have a problem. Imagine they will work hard on that this week.

yeah the Special Teams almost killed us, but again the defense bailed us out. Also the QB center exchange needs a good looking at. But I would not right Brunell off, He showed veteran leadership yesterday and kept that offense together, he showed some durability to he got knocked down a few times but popped right up (of course with the OL help). I think he will chuck it deep like he did with Jimmy Smith in Jax, give him some time he will find Coles deep.

yeah ST was awful, so were the center exchanges... and the QB/WR chemistry and run blocking need some work... playbooks a little super-conservative (on offense) too right now.

as long as we don't doze off during the gints game, we have plenty of time to rev up our weak spots.

I agree with all the positives already mentioned, but one thing I'd like to see is more plays running Portis outside the tackles, rather than up the middle, using that awesome mobility of his.

How many times did we see the counter tray yesterday? I dont remember many. I would like to see that reverse we saw during the Atlanta game also.

yeah, he does a lot better on screens and running around the corner...

My comments:

- Seeing Gibbs back on the sideline is really a dream come true. Always calm, always in control, always planning. Unlike Spurrier...

- Defense looked great. I love all the different blitz packages we brought. It was impossible to tell who was coming on any given play. Great job by G.Williams!

- Would like to see Taylor eventually claim Bowen's role as the blitzing safety. I'll never forget what Roy Williams did to us last year, and I think Taylor could cause similar havoc. Great job by Bowen though, he looked great.

- The offense was extremely conservative (Gibbs trademark), but I would like to see a few more shots downfield. Coles is too good and should be getting more touches. I think Gardner can have a huge year if he holds onto the ball. Gibbs loves to use the "possession receiver" (see Art Monk) and Gardner fits the mold perfectly.

- Great display by Portis. His speed is awesome and he seems to be able to grind it out just as easily. Personally I'd like to see Betts get more carries to take some of the load of Portis. Especially on those drives where Gibbs is just grinding clock and running between the tackles. No need for Portis to get beat up when we're grinding for 2-3 yards.

- Special teams were a little shaky especially on coverage. Also, I wasn't too impressed with Morton back there, he seemed a little sluggish. I would have liked to see a little more of what Gari Scott could do especially on punt returns. He seemed very quick in the preseason.

- Both lines played well. Props to the OL. It was a pleasure to see our QB upright for the whole game.

All in all a very solid performance. Great work by Gibbs, the staff, and the players. It was the first time in a while that we looked like one cohesive unit (ie a TEAM)!
