Do you have a ballpark dollar "limit" for what we can spend in FA this year? I'm guessing we need to go out and get either a starting OLB or starting strong side DE and possibly a starting o-lineman. Does it look as though we'll have the cash?

Man looking at the numbers if we restructure Springs even for half what he's currently due, that dude better play close to 16 games next year (and beyond). He's been spoiled rotten IMO and somehow would almost rather just see him cut. Nobody going to pay him close to what he's made here.

The story of the plan laid out is basically this:

- The Skins are $3.0 million over the cap, with 46 players under contract.

- Because I'm assuming the 30% Rule is in effect, the Skins can only clear about $2 million in space with contract restructures.

- They can then cut Marcus Washington to clear $4.5.

- They can extend or cut Springs and Jason Taylor to clear more space. Cutting them clears the most, but from everything I hear and read, Springs is still viewed as an intregal component of the defense, and last year Vinny said Jason Taylor would be around more than one season.

- They will have about $10 million in space to sign players. But they need a kicker, and then they need to tender Golston, Montgomery, and Doughty. Then they need to get Albright and Demetric Evans resigned. Then they need to plan on an amount to sign rookies, and I'm assuming they want to resign Hall. They also need to replace Kendall. In the end, I expect them to eat up all $10 million just from resigning their own guys and draft picks.

I don't see them having space to buy any free agents, unless they make deeper roster cuts than what I'm predicting here, or unless they choose to forego DeAngelo Hall.

Much can change over the coming weeks, so CC and me will keep this thread updated. The purpose of this thread is to educate the community, so feel free to ask questions.

Yeah man good point, it's his information I'm using (and I should note one more time, his sheets are exactly what drew me to this site).

Digging into the information and comparing to other Salary Cap info around the web on the Skins, I can tell you that CC's information is crazy accurate, even more accurate than the source JLC quotes on Redskins Insider. Whatever you're paying CC, it ain't enough! He's the man.

If we cut Marcus but can't replace him in FA it's either Blades or a rookie starting right? That doesn't sound good. Blades can probably handle it but we def need another solid backup (maybe they see progress in Fincher).

I hear what is being said about Springs importance to the D but jeez he is expensive and if we sign Hall... just a lot of talent in the secondary when the LB corp looks pretty shallow. I'm trying to be objective but have to admit I like Marcus' character over Springs from what I know of the two guys. This is just seems like a bummer situation...

That was the hard part of laying out this scenario, ultimately I don't know who the Skins will decide to part with. It could be Washington, it could be Taylor, it could be Springs, it could be all three.

So it's hard to tell, I'm just going on my best guess.

But if anything, this shows how tight things will be for the 'Skins if we don't get a new CBA. They'll be limited in free agency, and forced to make some tough roster decisions.

Spot on. My only point is this: an increase in the Salary Cap by $7 million implys that defined gross revenues for the NFL increased by 5 to 6 percent over 2007.

But since the economy crashed in September, is that even a reasonable assumption? I mean, you have the TV deals, and the season ticket sales were already wrapped up at that point, but the single game ticket sales and merchandise revenue had to drop a little bit from last year.

Basically, I think that the cap projection of 123 mil that was made prior to the economic downturn probably affected gross league revenues, and I would be surprised if the cap pushed north of 119 mil.

And if this can be construed as an excuse for getting rid of Casey Rabach, then count me in.

LOL at the Rabach comment.

You're absolutely right, the $123 million cap limit is a preliminary projection at this point. The NFL will publish the actual cap limit in the coming weeks. The economic downturn could indeed result in a lower number than previously expected.

Faced with the decision with signing DeAngelo Hall, or some other free agent who is actually good, I say: that I wish Hall wasn't a local boy.

But yeah, this actually shows why it's even more insane to worry about the contracts of Rogers and Campbell right now, when we have to decide right here and right now which direction the team is going to go in the future, and player movement figures to be restricted in the future.

Should have gotten Jeff Faine last year, and then we wouldn't be in this situation now.

It's not expected to be radically different from the already projected $123 million, could actually be a bit higher at around $124 million. That's the last I've heard at least.

I think the entire offseason plan can be summed up by one boolean dualism: EITHER the veterans OR younger free agents.

You have your Shawn Springs, but you also have Dunta Robinson out there.
You have your Jason Taylor, but you also have Julius Peppers out there.
You have your Phillip Daniels, but you also have Terrell Suggs out there.
You have your Marcus Washington, but you also have Karlos Dansby out there.
You have your Casey Rabach, but you also have Jason Brown out there.
You have your DeAngelo Hall, but you also have Nnamdi Asomugha out there.

And some tough choices will have to be made for sure. I have to say, the cut the older guys and go with the top free agents looks really nice on paper, but it's tough to say for sure which players are critical for our success in the future, and who we would just be overpaying. Which is why GMs get paid what they do.

For the first time in memory, we wont be able to have our cake and eat it too. We have to choose our own veterans vs. the far risker, but potentially more rewarding FA route.

Something tells me we're going to be fairly aggressive in free agency. Not quite like some of the spending sprees we've seen in the past, but I could definitely see us signing 2-3 top guys.

I think that's certainly possible, but for that to happen we're either saying peace out DeAngelo Hall, or we're saying bye bye to Taylor and/or Springs.

Or a CBA gets struck and we get everything we want!

Before all the enlightenment on salary cap status I voted yes to bringing Taylor back on a restructured deal ($4 mill/year or something). Less enthused about him now. I think it's safe to say JT is not the answer @ strong side end. Either Daniels returns to swap w/ Evans (who we ought to bring back) or Daniels is gone and we go get someone else. (Just curious what Peppers is likely to command for salary?) Anyway, Taylor seems like something of a luxury looking ahead being that AC is here to stay and probably as effective as Taylor in our defense at other end position.

Schneed - I think it will be all 3 - why not clear as much space as we can now and make a run at bolstering the lines with young guys? Maybe 1 on the offensive line and one on the defensive line and than draft a couple of lineman and a linebacker. The more you look at the situation the more it seems likely the Skins should cut all 3 as the injuries and age are big time negatives as no other team in the leagus would pay them this type of money. I also say no to restructures on these 3 - lets stop mortgaging the future cap space and get some youth injected into the team.

It makes the most sense to junk Taylor and his $8M. Injuries aside Springs is still pretty valuable at corner and is versatile enough to play safety.

I don't get the boner that some have over Hall, I'd rather keep Springs and Rogers and look at a free agent like Asomugha if the Raiders can't keep him. He won't come cheap but I think he would be worth it.

I get the logic, and if I were running the show I'd probably go this route or something very similar to it.

But Vinny's running it, and based on what I've heard and seen, he likes JT for more than a year, and the team still loves Springs.

Maybe Vinny will surprise us and do the right thing by cutting Taylor.

Put a different way, I think they'll have $10 million in cap room to sign various players. One will need to be a kicker, one will need to be a long snapper, one will need to be a guard if they let Kendall go, they'll need D Linemen if they decide to let Monty, Golston and Evans walk. The one extravagant signing I have in here is Hall. If they decide to let him go they can use that money for somebody else.

CBA no CBA. I guess I'm confused even after all the banter about it. I thought if the CBA was going by the way side then we would have only one year, 2010 to worry about. Then in 2011 all teams could spend as much money as they liked due to no CBA anymore. It was my understanding that if we could make it past the 2010 year we would be good.

You've got the concept right, you're just off by a year.

The CBA is set to expire in 2010, which would mean 2010 would have no salary cap at all and we'd be free to have as much salary on the books as we wanted.

But that means 2009 becomes the Final Capped Season, and as such specific rules governing contracts and cap allocation methodology are in effect.

Great thread Schneed. My sheets are ok but it's your analysis that really gives them value. Thanks for all the hard work.

My personal view is that:

- Taylor is gone or severly restructured (minimum salary and a very small signing bonus and/or incentives)

- Potential cuts: Washington, Griffin, Rabach, Daniels are all cut candidates. Doubt all would go but if the Skins do commit to some kind of youth movement (stop laughing) they are all candidates.

- Springs - the guy breaks my heart. One of the best corners in the NFL but he just doesn't play enough. I gave him a pass last year on some of the lesser games (Det, etc.) but he's gotta be in that 2nd Dallas game. He is definitely looking for one more significant deal which may explain his propensity for sitting out games. One bad injury and he would never play again. It seems like he plays just enough to show other teams he can still play but not enough to risk injury.

Maybe if we give him a decent deal he will finish his career here and actually play all the games, but it doesn't seem likely. The right move for the future might just be to let him go...

Also I think Jansen will stay but he would have been a perfect June 1 cut.

Thanks for all the cap info. Does anyone know if the players we draft in April effect our cap number for next year ?

Yes. If you look at the "Cap Summary" sheet there is a line at the bottom called "Rookie Pool".

- The rookie pool is the max cap space a team can spend on signing draft picks and undrafted free agents. A team's rookie pool is based on the number and position of draft picks, with teams holding higher picks being allocated more dollars per pick than teams holding lower picks. Great analysis of the Salary Cap.

Personally I, think that we should definetly cut Griffin, Washington, and Daniels. They are dinosaurs on our team who either can't stay healty or don't produce. Washington and Daniels have not played a full season in about 3 years, and as far as Griffin goes, I just think that position needs a serious up grade.

I would try to restructure Taylor and Springs, but if one has to go it would be Springs. I just have a feeling that Taylor will play with a chip on his shoulder next season, you could see how disappointed he was at him self at the end of the year.

Sign Hall and re-sign Rogers to a long term contract. Youth in the backfield.

Address the other areas of the team via the draft and free agency.

For Goodness sakes get a CAPABLE KICKER!!!!!!!!!!!

Put a different way, I think they'll have $10 million in cap room to sign various players. One will need to be a kicker, one will need to be a long snapper, one will need to be a guard if they let Kendall go, they'll need D Linemen if they decide to let Monty, Golston and Evans walk. The one extravagant signing I have in here is Hall. If they decide to let him go they can use that money for somebody else.[/quote]

Thanks for this thread Schneed. I must admist that I haven't been very knowledgable about the salary cap and how it effects the roster. This thread has helped me considerably with everyone's questions.

I would say if the 'Skins really really wanted to get it done, yes they are both tradeable. But doing so would come at a cost.

Moss is easier to move than Rogers. Trading Moss would cost us half a million in cap space. My math in the first post is showing that filling the roster without cutting all three of Springs, Washington, and Taylor is very tight. But to move Moss, you basically need to find another $500K in space somewhere else. You could forego a DeAngelo Hall resigning, you could find a player who will take a paycut, you could get rid of an extra player like Phillip Daniels, or you could decide to let Jason Taylor (or Springs) go along with Marcus Washington. So the short answer is yes, Moss is very tradeable, IF you can get comfortable with the opportunity cost.

With Rogers, the opportunity cost is greater. Sending him away in a trade would cost us $1.5 million in cap space. That of course means finding even more room than you would need for Moss. Is it doable? Absolutely. But again, it means getting rid of veterans who you'd otherwise keep, foregoing DeAngelo Hall or Pete Kendall, or finding someone to take a paycut.

In my opinion, trading either one would make the team worse, because the opportunity cost of doing so outweighs the value they'd bring back in a trade. But if Vinny and company disagreed with me on that point, they could get it done.
