What's with the Ref. in the booth
The skins hired a retired referee to assist coach gibbs in challenging bad calls. What was his problem when Brunell got the first down on the one yard line?
|
yeah I reall thought he would challenge that. It was so clear, I hope he does better as the season goes on.
|
For whatever reason he advised Gibbs to not challenge it. Maybe he didn't have the same angle that we saw on TV, that's about the only reason I can think of because it was pretty clear that it was a first down all the way.
What was up with that spot from the refs anyway?? Just horrible. |
yeah the refs were not ontop of that one for sure. So he did advise them not to challenge it. I was thinking maybe he did not really see it and said nothing at all (well atleast that is what i was hoping)
|
i dont know how many challenges we will see from gibbs this year, for some reason ithink he wont want to risk losing the timeout, unless its really, really evident or in the 4th quarter and is desperately needed.
|
At the time (not knowing what the final result was going to be) did you guys think maybe we should have gone for it anyway on 4th down? I guess you always want to go for the sure points but I like the idea of sending a message with a "bold" decision like that
|
I liked the decision to take the points.
God forbid they went for it and got stopped, that could have really changed the momentum of the game. |

I think you're right. Gibbs doesn't want to loose any timeouts. |
Also, I have read - on the Bucs forum for what it's worth - that Brunnell's elbow hit the turf with the ball short of the first down (in which case he is down). Did the TV replay show this?
As I was 4 rows from the top of the stadium, I don't think I had the best angle. |
I'm pretty sure the replay showed his elbow hit the turf well past the marker.
|
it defenitely did not hit the turf. I had a non redskin fan watching the game with me and even admitted that was horrible.
|
Taking the points was classic Gibbs in this situation. He was not going to take a chance for a momentum shift when he knew they were pounding the crap out of them.
|
i wish we would've gone for it! c'mon, we were at the two, behind the dirtbags..... c'mon GO FOR IT!
|
I don't know if hiring a x-ref is a good thing, #1, half these guy's are blind to begin with while they are active, I really don't want to know what the guy's vision is like after he retires?????
#2, I wonder if he would have some reservation's about alway's second guessing his buddies? Knowing the rules isn't really a big deal in the replay booth, being able to see is, anyone can watch a replay, it's not rocket science, the fact that he didn't challenge that spot at the goal line on the run by Brunnell, put's a red flag up for me, even if your not sure, challenge it any way, it's the first half take a shot, we could have overturned 2 play's, instead are inablity to get the call right, really helped the Buc's stay in the game, this can't happen again, hopefully Gibb's read's this guy the riot act. |

Guess you weren't around for Gibbs I. NEVER TAKE POINTS OFF THE BOARD. This is so ingrained in the regulars that you did not hear one boo nor one chant to go for it. I agree. But the mark was bad and the challenge should have happened. So lesson one for the rookies of Gibbs II DON'T TAKE POINTS OFF THE BOARD!!! |
But you might also think if he doesn't get it by going on 4th down we have them pinned deep on the one with loud fans and a vicious defense. If you remember the special teams gave up a long one after the field goal. But if they goo 99 yards and score we lose momentum and most likely the game. So good decsion.
|
Yeah I was around for Gibbs the first time around. I seem to remember him going for it on 4th and 1 in a certain Super Bowl. Or how about 1989 (or was it 90?) when he went for it on 4th and 4 or 5 against the Chargers and got a TD to Gary Clark? Granted the circumstances weren't exactly the same, and I had no problem at all with taking the field goal yesterday, I was just curious what people on this board thought of the decision
|
Gibb's was playing it safe, he will become more aggresive as he get's a better handle on his personel, and feel's more comfortable out there, I was out of the const. buis. for 10 year's, when I went back a couple of year's ago, I couldn't believe how hard it was to remember how to do thing's that were at the time second nature, win, or lose, it's going to take Gibb's some time to become acclamated.
|
And I think back in 1985, on Monday Night against St. Louis they had a 4th down at around the 10 yard line. They went for it, Gifford confidently said the ball will go to Riggins and sure enough it went to....Theismann on a bootleg for a touchdown
But anyway, I think Offiss' post was dead-on! |
I just hope they pay this guy (in the booth) on results, he'd be handing over some cash today. The Brunell dive was clearly good for a 1st down, I expect an apology from the league to be at Redskins Park this afternoon.
|
Yeah, god forbid we woulda been short one of the three remaining first half timeouts. If it were second half I may buy that argument. Even with timeouts we killed the clock at the end of the half.
In the first half, challenge anything remotely questionable. The 2nd half is a different story. Either way I thought that replay would have been clear. Gibbs is a smart man, he'll see the film and realize what he has to do to improve. I have faith in that. |
I pretty much agree with all the posts; we should have challenged the spot and would have had a first down. Failing that I really did want Coach Gibbs to go for it, but I'll accept his decision.
As for CRT3's comment about never take points off the board, we hadn't put the points on the board yet!!!! That usually refers to making a field goal and having a penalty on the play that would give you a first down. Then you usually don't take the points off the board!!!! |

Guess being in Arizona you never got to listen to Frank, Sam and Sonny. Easy chip shots are what you call don't take points off the board. And Daesal do you rember the spot of the ball when he went for it on 4th down back in the day. To far for a field goal and the momentum of the game was already with the other team. So make sure you use those intanglbles to. |
Remember that John Hall had just missed a FG on the previous possession. If Gibbs had decided to go for it, even that close to the end zone, many would have considered in a vote of "no confidence" in Hall. Letting him kick the FG was A) guaranteed points, and B) a reminder that he's an important weapon.
I like that argument. Good point. |

He missed from 50 but had plenty of leg. Don't think they were to worried about his confidence from 3 yards out |
Oops Brud! I meant to quote your comment about a possible no confidence vote, not edit it.
Damn You Alcohol!!!!!!!! |

One thing I will credit him with was not challenging the Gardner play when he dropped the 3rd down pass, and started yelling for the coaches to throw the flag, and they didn't, he did get that one right, Gardner, what an moron. |
The WP article has a pretty good explanation of the reason behind not challenging it, guess it had to do with the poor angles Larry Hill had to look at in the booth, he thought it wasn't conclusive. He also mentions that you can't rely on the first down stripe on TV, says it's off by a good half yard.
Pretty interesting article actually. The Skins are the only team that employs a ref to advise on challenges and it also mentions that Gibbs was the first coach to have refs that regularly worked their practices. Larry Hill also oversees all the Skins practices where he keeps track of all penalties called so they can track player tendencies. Amazing how Gibbs leaves no stone unturned!!
1st half, under those type of circumstances, I throw the flag.
good thing you're not the coach.
J/K :D :D... i would have thrown it too, there's just not much to lose in that situation. |
It will come in time. They have to get used to the speed of the game. After this week, I bet Larry will be a bit more on the ball. I also like it that Gibbs brought in a ref. More proof that "the game has passed him by." NOT.
Damn You Alcohol!!!!!!!!
How dare you say such a thing about the cause of and the solution to all of life's problems! :cheeky-sm |
