Defensive Report Card (Bucs game)

vote and discuss

SUNRA 09-13-2004 12:19 PM

I give the defense an F. I mean this a no brainer.

Ade Jimoh Fan Club 09-13-2004 12:23 PM

Yes - definitely a no-brainer. It was a great showing of Washington's new triple-threat: Bowen, Pierce, and Jimoh.

I thought all of the off-season acqisitions played a real solid game.

Redskins_P 09-13-2004 12:24 PM

I voted an A. If we had A+, I would've voted that. I can't remember the last time I saw a redskins defense dominate like that.

MTK 09-13-2004 12:26 PM

'A' all the way no question.

4 sacks, tons of pressure, only 30 yards on the ground, guys flying all over, huge thumbs up to the D staff and the players of course.

kingerock 09-13-2004 12:28 PM

I gave them a "B" as we were playing a suspect offense and did, at times, seem to miss assignments in the secondary. Bowen gets an "A+" as any defensive mis-cues he covered and more than redeemed with his very agressive play at the line and in the backfield. I've always felt he would play well in the box as he's a quick player and hard hitter.

JWsleep 09-13-2004 12:30 PM

A. Williams really exposed the bucs, and fully controlled the game. Great blitzes and solid run stopping. And good tackling all around. Very agressive.

I think the bucs made it easy (their 1st team offense didn't score in the preseason, and didn't score yesterday. And they were without Pittman, and Galloway for most of it); still, the tone is set.

SmootSmack 09-13-2004 12:34 PM

Absolutely an "A". Granted this Bucs offense isn't anything great but still the Skins defense needed a confidence boost to kick start the season. Maybe not a confidence boost per se, but a chance to show that they're capable of being aggressive and smart

The only person whose name I didn't hear mentioned at all was Phillip Daniels. I loved seeing Bowen playing he was like Ronnie Lott, heck I loved Andre Lott playing like he was Ronnie Lott. Walt Harris is a definite upgrade over Bauman at nickel back-at least in my opinion. Smoooooottttt! The linebackers were aggressive from start to finish. And all of this was in no small part due to the presence of Griffin, Salavea, Noble, and Haley in the trenches

Oh and let's give some props to Ade and his special teams play.

bridaman51 09-13-2004 12:36 PM

Defiantely an A. This defense did not give up a point. here is why the field goal was a gift by the special teams, after that return TB did nothing with the ball (victory D). there only other score came against the offense. Defense played lights out i dont care what kind of offense that was that was dominant.

jbcjr14 09-13-2004 12:48 PM

Just perfection and intensity from start to finish.

That Guy 09-13-2004 12:57 PM

B, it was great, but it was great against a bad O... the giants will be a better test, but the real tests are dallas and more importantly, the eagles.

Big C 09-13-2004 01:19 PM

A, our defense was flying all over the place, and if it wasnt for the fumble, and the kick return, i have no doubt that it would have been a shutout. we got turnovers, and drove bj crazy.

CrazyCanuck 09-13-2004 01:29 PM

I give them a A. They played fantastic and Williams had them pumped.

I'd like to see how they look against a real offense.

saden1 09-13-2004 01:54 PM

I give them an A- because dump off passes were there quite a few times. I think next week we'll see the Giants trying to take advantage of that. Expect lots of screens and dump off passes to Barber.

I thought the idea was to rate our team and not determine what and who the opponet is. It was a A performance, no question. And please do not even say the Giants will be a better test. Did you watch the game yesterday in Phillly. The only thing better on the Giants team is the backfield of Dayne and Barber who most certainly will give us a test. Philly wiill be A versus A. Yesterday was A versus D

LRT 09-13-2004 03:33 PM

The defense gave an A performance. The last time I remember seeing the Skins put that much pressure on the offense, the opponent was the Eagles and their QB was Ron Jaworski. I really liked the play calling. Twelve seconds to play - leading 16 to 10 - most defensive coordinators go into the prevent. But, Williams sends in the blitz, puts the pressure on the D and they respond. Aggresive play calling. Well executed. Definately an A. I hope to see more of it.

SmootSmack 09-13-2004 03:36 PM

LRT, welcome to the board! Wow Latvia! How did you become a Redskins fan?

Thanks smootsmack. Actually, I'm a DC area native - my work brought me to Latvia.

skinsguy 09-13-2004 04:59 PM

Clearly the best Redskins defense I have witnesses in a LONG time! They held the Buc's offense to the one field goal, which The Bucs probably would not have gotten if it wasn't for that great kick return. The score really should have been Redskins 21 - Bucs 3.

drew54 09-13-2004 05:22 PM

My grade was a B, although it is a high B. There is still some room for improvment, but compared to what we have seen in the past they played out of this world.

I think if they keep improving and attacking like they did against the Buccs, it could be a great season.

Hail!

so, you're saying the 270 passing yards NY put up is worse than the 170 BJ did? or those has been WRS are better than NY's WR/TEs?? not to mention the running game. yes, the giants WILL be a better test of our DEFENSE. they put up 440 yards of offense, don't even try to tell me thats not as good as the sub 200 yards the bucs put up. I DID watch the game, and if you didn't seen their O or the score, that's not my problem.

Daseal 09-13-2004 06:19 PM

We played extremely well on defense and there is very little to complain about.

Smoot played fantastic. I'm guessing Springs did great too since he didn't get a ball his way. Our safeties played well except on the should have TD galloway dropped. Our defensive line was impressive considering how weak I expected it to be, and our linebackers played suberb football. Definitely something I like to see.

We saw enough Prevent defense last year to hold us over for a lifetime. Bring the pain!

1st of all remember the Eagles secondary could be conisdered weak as they lost some major players back there. There linebackers are not that fast or did you forget that JErmiah went back. Who's Oline is worse Giants or Bucs. Experience goes to the Bucs even though they could not pick up a blitz. The G-man recievers in case you hadn't checked are weak. The TE's when Shockey is healthy are great but otherwise suck. Kurt Warner? Don't even try with that one.

That Guy 09-14-2004 03:28 AM

trotter is a back up who only plays on special teams, and if you think NY WRs are worse than those guys in bucland, i'm sorry, that's crap. and they got a running game that actually works, i don't know how you can possible think tampa's offensive threat is even close.

NY O-line is definately worse (i never said it wasn't), but even with kearse rushing, they still put up massive yards.

OK with the Trotter statement, your right, sorry. But I disagree with you on the Giants WRs, sorry about that to. Also please refer back to each of my comments in this thread where I clearly say Dayne and Barber will be tougher then Tampa. In case you didn't know who they were they are the Giants running backs. I see you agree with me on the Oline and no comment on the TE I would assume you are in agreeement and quarterback as we both know is not even a question. So how are the Giants better on offense then? Also lets not forget the coaches. Coughlin already has a major problem in the locker room. He is finning people for showing up early to meetings. :laughing-

That Guy 09-14-2004 08:12 AM

so your saying the RBs are better, but they're not? and yes, the QBs will put up more yards, so apparently it is a question :P sorry you don't feel like i should be able to have my own opinion, but again, that's not my fault.

Maybe you misunerstood so I will put it in plain language.

The Giants Running Backs of Dayne and Barber are BETTER then the Bucs Running Backs of Garner and Pittman.

Are you saying they are not?

Also nobody said you weren't entilted to a opinion thats what this board is set up for last time I checked. I was disagreeing with you. You still have not given me a concrete reason why you think the Giants Offense is a better test then the Tampa Offense. Your thought process seems to be because they put up a ton of passing yards on the Eagles. And I said the Eagles secondary is suspect based on the losses they had in free agency (Vincent and Taylor) If you think the Giants put up a lot of yards on the Eagles wait till this weekend when the Eagles play the Vikings. I think they might double up that number.

I still also think(my opinion) that the Redskins played a A game no matter who they had faced. Can you find a weakness they had during the game. Seems to me they pitched a shut out. Special Teams allowed the Bucs to get deep into our territory, which the d held and only allowed a field goal. Drive Chart from the Game showes
Time of Possesion - 1:35
Start of Play after the returned Kickoff - WAS 34
Numberr of Plays including Field Goal - 4
Total YArds Gained on Drive - 5
Field Goal

Other points scored came from the Offense. So they pitched a shut out and that deserves a A. Plus a positive turnover ratio and 4 sacks, how can you argue.

That Guy 09-14-2004 10:44 AM

440 yrds to 199 yds is how i can argue, the eagles aren't the bucs, but they aren't horrible either. the bucs O is very slow and the skins had been planning that game for 5 months. other teams are capable of rolling out and beating blitzes more effectively then gruden/BJ, and until we play one of them, its hard to say we have an A rated defense for sure. this performance was very good, but the competition wasn't. Just because we shut them down doesn't mean that they don't suck.

and the NY RBs are better, you keep saying they're not going to be a better test though, even though they're better, that's what i was commenting on... those statements conflict a bit.

SkinsRock 09-14-2004 02:11 PM

Duh: A No question.

This is a grade of how they performed against the Bucs. Yes, other teams may be more of a challenge for them, but that will be a different poll. It is a grade of this particular performance, not of the Redskins D in general. They shut them down, so they deserve an A.
