Updated: Daschle Withdraws; Didn't these guys have to fill out an application?
Much was made of Obama's extensive job application. White House job application leaves no stone unturned - CNN.com
I guess it only applies to the peons and not cabinet level posts. So I'm just going to wait and see what happens. During the campaign Obama said he'd name names when pork was inserted into bills. There's so much pork in this new bill you can put cole slaw on top of it. We'll just have to wait and see. |
re: Updated: Daschle Withdraws; Didn't these guys have to fill out an application?
I, like TTE am observing the process.....for the moment. Much was made during the campaign of Immediate and Sweeping Positive change.
I wish him luck |
re: Updated: Daschle Withdraws; Didn't these guys have to fill out an application?
Don't you all realize by pointing out lack of change you are only contributing to the non-change? You aren't allowed to do that. You're "part of the problem".

The one guy was voted to head the treasury dept which was the same dept he was ripping off. Figure that.

Well he wasn't ripping it off but his lack of oversight over his own personal issues doesn't bode well for his attentivenees to detail. Why he thought the IMF would deduct his payroll taxes for him and why he apparently never even looked at his paycheck is beyond me. |
re: Updated: Daschle Withdraws; Didn't these guys have to fill out an application?
No one said you couldn't lie on the application. The sense of entitlement in some of these guys is unbelievable. Obama should drop Daschle down an elevator shaft and find himself a better replacement.

Sorry but I do not buy any of that and feel he is lying and yes, by not paying his taxes he was ripping off the IRS. |
re: Updated: Daschle Withdraws; Didn't these guys have to fill out an application?
I don't understand why all of these apointments have to be political ones? Why can't they find people who can just do the job?

Tim Geithner failed to pay Social Security and Medicare taxes (he paid his income tax) and when he was told by the Obama people that he owed 25K he paid it with interest on top of it. I don't see how he ripped off the IRS, he paid them with fines on top of it. Even Mark Rich didn't ripoff the IRS. Wesley Snipes thought he could ripoff the IRS. You really can't ripoff the IRS. |

Why would he lie about it? He was paying his other taxes. I can see a completely reasonable situation where this could happen. I just don't think he was out to avade taxes. He made a dumb mistake. The kind that would preclude me from hiring him simply based on demonstrated idiocy but nefarious it was not. My biggest problem is that once this was found Obama should have dropped him. If he really is about change he should have dropped him before it was even news. Forget politics. How about getting people who are competent? Bush got railed (rightfully so) for having a incompetent boob in charge when Katrina came around. Well now we are faced with an economic Katrina and we have a guy in charge of the Treasurery (and IRS) who screwed up his taxes royally and his excuse was "Gee man I didn't really pay any attention." Color me just as unimpressed by him as I am aboiut Brown. |

I totally agree. The only Fed agency that does it's job well is the IRS. They are the shining example of how a gov't agency should run. |
re: Updated: Daschle Withdraws; Didn't these guys have to fill out an application?
Is there a perfect job candidate out there? Are you a perfect candidate for a job you've applied for? If you were employer would you wait for the perfect job candidate?
Tim Geithner was a harmless failure that can be overlooked. Daschle's failure to pay taxes was a blatant and loathsome.
Daschle recently filed amended tax returns to report $128,203 in back taxes and $11,964 in interest. The amended returns reflect additional income for consulting work, the use of a car service and reduced deductions for charitable contributions.
|

Thats true for 2001 and 2002. He was also audited for 2003 and 2004 and failed to disclose other income for those years. He has a history of failing to pay taxes and now he is going to run the IRS. |

Go back and listen to the debates. They both said it. If McCain had been the only one to say it then so what? It's still pork. |
re: Updated: Daschle Withdraws; Didn't these guys have to fill out an application?
oh, i agree. pork is pork. but i wish the knew the last time ANY bill was passed without any pork. probably never

Re: Updated: Daschle Withdraws; Didn't these guys have to fill out an application?
I'm really bothered by all of this quite frankly. You're damned if you do and damned if you don't.
I'm just glad he stepped down. I hate to say, but I think we're about to see more public officials, not cabinet per se, who have "fudged" their taxes. The spotlight is on this administration like no other. But deservedly so. I think the President should make some kind of statement accounting for his choices in these two (three) instances. Even if he's not entirely at fault or was in the dark. I bet everyone's scrambling like crazy right now at the White House making sure another shoe doesn't drop. I will see it's good to get this out of the way right now. |

Its what they do when they find out these things that concerns me. I always wondered why Dem's thought it was OK to over tax the rich because most of them are also rich and now I know. They just cheat on their taxes. |
Re: Updated: Daschle Withdraws; Didn't these guys have to fill out an application?
If you're going to pedal transparency, good character and judgment you better make sure you're people are clean. I am glad that Obama is dumping these people, except for Timy G they're all retarded.
Did Nancy Killefer really think she could apply for a job that promised to make the government "more effective, more efficient, and more transparent" and no one would find out she has a 1 million dollar lien against her? What a f*cking moron! |

Neither do I, usually. But when was the last time we saw an incoming administration with such high expectations? And when was the last time we combed through each cabinet selection with a fine tooth comb? Not in my lifetime, that's for sure. No, I'm not suggesting that the President is responsible for these folks' actions, but I do think his theme has taken somewhat of a hit. As far as Dems taxing the rich and cheating on their taxes? Yeah, I'm sure this is true across the board. |

It just seems like, after all the "Change" rhetoric, we are getting more of the same. It is particularly eggregious after that lengthy application process that most applicants were required to go through. I think it was you, Saden, who said one of your big concerns was that it seemed the lobbyists were running the shop. Who in particular were you concerned with and why? (If it wasn't Saden, then this is directed to whomever made the statement) (yes, I am too lazy to search for it). |

There's no way for president to know this info unless the person comes clean before they are picked. |

I screwed up, Nancy Killefer has a $946.69 tax lien against her home not 1 million. Don't ask me how I miss read that. Still, that's very bad.
Anywho, Obama is at least apologizing to the country and owning up to his mistakes. All I ask is you try and I can't say he isn't trying. |

Here is where Obama is making points with me. Ignoring policy debates and politics in general the one thing that killed me about Bush's administration, and most politicians in general, is that when they did screw up (and they all do) they never owned up to it. I don't know why it is so hard for politicians to say "yeah we f'ed that up". A lot of the stuff anchoring Bush was smaller stuff that they could have diffused with honesty and openess. Instead it was always cloak and dagger/stay on message. What is it with these people? It's like they have no clue about actual human social patterns. Seriously, they all need to take a cue from the Simpson and appoint a Secretary of keepin' it real. Looks like Obama is trying. |

Not closely related, nor threadworthy, but....
Did anyone see Letterman just straight up trash Blagojevich tonight?? Hilarious. I've never seen such denial in my life. The former governor is either mentally retarded or a sociopath. Either way, he's done. He's the Roger Clemens of governorship. |

It is so easy to say I messed up, the sooner you say it the sooner you get out of the doghouse. I never got cover-ups either. The cover-up is always worse than the lie yet some folks still have a hard time with it. The Bush folks were a special bunch. Even in their attempt at appealing to the public in their exit interview was a miserable failure. |
Re: Updated: Daschle Withdraws; Didn't these guys have to fill out an application?
Well what else could Obama have said? He push this "Change" thing and then within his first days in office tried to bring in people that did not represent any form of change. I guess the good news is that he brought in about $200,000 to the IRS in unpaid taxes.
|
Re: Updated: Daschle Withdraws; Didn't these guys have to fill out an application?
does that make you wonder how many politicians are NOT paying their taxes? one of those things that make you go hmmm?
