News from up North

We signed another player from the CFL. He seems good.

Did they already announce the field goal kicker we signed from Canada also? Dave Rayner.

Here's another story on it:

Let's hope he's talented enough to stay on as a punt returner. We need one.

I like the idea of having a weapon on Special Teams, Rock is great, but maybe some younger legs can break some big plays for us!

Re: News from up North

Here are his 2008 CFL Stats (Att-Yds-Avg-TD):
Kick Returns: 50-1257-25.1-1 (4th in league)
Punt Returns: 63-752-11.9-1 (4th in league)
Rushing: 64-410-6.4-2
Receiving: 15-286-19-0

I'm guessing he'll compete with Rock for the 3rd RB/KR spot...

I am not getting excited yet. He hasn't made the final 53 man roster.

On a side note we can trade Betts and Randle El now and either promote or cut Rock.

In one sentence you're saying don't get too excited because he hasn't made the final roster. Yet in the next, you're talking about getting rid of 2-3 similar players

Pardon. No, I think he plays up there also. Not a native of Canada.

This would be an upgrade at the RB position maybe and it would be the scat back the RB coach was requesting to play along side Portis. I wonder if this is the end for both Rock and Betts?

The Redskins also signed Michael Grant

He could compete for some DB depth

They made a bunch of other signings as well, but mostly camp filler I think

Darn it. I was about to call it too. I was going to say something like Dorsey will be called by some as camp fodder. I didn't put it in my previous post for what ever reason. Man oh man.

Not to be a downer but can anyone think of the last Canadian prospect that would make the kind of impact that is being suggested.

I have a hard time getting excited for these undiscovered prospects who get cut annually during training camp.

Can someone put the Marcus Monk name in the Redskins ear at some point. Another young WR perhaps on the cheap to try out would be nice also. lol.

But there are plenty of undiscovered prospects league wide who don't get cut and make an impact come the regular season.

But what kind of impact are we expecting here realistically? This guy isn't going to be the #2 back behind Clinton, and he's not going to line up opposite Santana as the #2 WR either.

Don't know if he was or not. Monk was picked up by the Giants then cut so he is available and could be tried out to replace Thrash.

I'm just sraight up confused right now. I am trying to understand the motives behind the move. I am skeptical about the player we chose if those are the intended motives.

The way I worded my thought process was backwards in the first post.

Re: News from up North
What exactly are you confused about?
Why they would scour the CFL for a return man...one that is already 3 years into his professional career at that. Why bring in a 4th RB to compete for the return job already held by the 3rd RB unless you are planning on getting rid of him or promote him. In that case some other RB might be out via trade. I could add a couple of more things but I believe that my next sentence will better explain my position.

Right now the Skins should be posturing for the draft (they claim to want more picks) not just adding camp bodies. So either somebody believes that he is a viable replacement to a player or 2. Or somebody has their head up their ass. I believe that this guy is a camp body, but why add one now? There will be plenty of time for that later, especially after the draft.

Why this guy and why now? I understand the pickup of the Kicker, but this doesn't make sense yet.

Re: News from up North

Wait, is this the new Chris Wilson thread??

He's a great player in the CFL. Not sure how that will translate. Some players have made the jump, more have not.

Anyone know his times? At work I can't get the youtube links so I don't know how impressive he looks. I would suggest that, if he looks fast b/c his running past CFL'ers, he would not look as fast in an NFL game. The CFL is simply a slower game (competive b/c EVERYONE is slower). Not saying he won't make it (I hope he will), just that, when viewing CFL footage, put it in perspective. There is a reason that few CFL'ers are stars in the NFL.

With any luck he turns out to be a decent return guy and hopefully ousts ARE.

His CfL stats for KO return numbers are no better than Rocks in the NFL and rock has ave. for the past two years is 25.7 yards with over 1300 total each year. Maybe they are looking at him for punt returns but I don't think they would bring a guy in just for punt returns.

Well, NFL (or maybe it's CFL) rules state that if any NFL team wants to sign a CFL player currently under contract to a CFL team to potentially add to their 2009 roster, they have to do it by the end of next week. I think maybe February 15th is the deadline.

That's why you see so many CFL players being signed around this time.

Whatever interest they have on him, they had to act on it now.

REDSKINS PARK, LOUDOUN COUNTY, VA. -- The Redskins have signed kicker Dave Rayner and running back-kick returner Dominique Dorsey.

Rayner has been with seven different teams since entering the league in 2005.

For his career, he has played in 43 games and connected on 42-of-59 field goals and 48-of-49 PATs.

Rayner, 6-2 and 210 pounds was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in the sixth round of the 2005 NFL Draft.

He played in all 16 games for the Green Bay Packers in 2006 and connected on 26-of-35 field goals and 31-of-32 PATs for 109 points.

Since then, Rayner has played for the Kansas City Chiefs, San Diego Chargers and Cincinnati Bengals. He has also had short stints with the Miami Dolphins and Detroit Lions.

Rayner played college football at Michigan State.

Dorsey, 5-7 and 170 pounds, spent the last three years as a return specialist and running back in the Canadian Football League. He played for Saskatchewan in 2006 and Toronto in 2007-08.

Dorsey was a CFL all-star with Toronto in 2008 and also earned the John Agro Special Teams Award as the league’s most outstanding special teams player.

Dorsey played college football at UNLV.
