OT Michael Oher is still the top mock pick for the Redskins at #13, but only with 21%. I tend to think we will take an OT at #13 or trade down, dependent on what OT is still available. |
Re: Database Update: Consensus Projections, DE, OT, and LB ranking links
Good stuff. Still hearing that Andre Smith is slipping in the eyes of some execs around the league. Redskins met with him today. I don't know that he'll fall that far though
|
Re: Database Update: Consensus Projections, DE, OT, and LB ranking links
If were going to draft the 13th and not trade down then I'd like to get Jason Smith. The other Smith is going down for a reason right?
|
Re: Database Update: Consensus Projections, DE, OT, and LB ranking links
Jason Smith and Michael Oher seem to be moving up (especially Smith), which is knocking Andre Smith down. There are some "concerns" that Andre Smith is better suited for guard (maybe RT) and I guess he has some consistency/focus issues as well. But who knows, it could all just be posturing right now.
I know Orakpo is getting a lot of mention but my gut tells me that if VC has his way we go OL in the first round and then LB (maybe Marcus Freeman) in the 3rd. I think he feels there's a deeper LB pool than at OL. And if he really gets his way we add a 2nd and/or 4th rounder via trade. |
Re: Database Update: Consensus Projections, DE, OT, and LB ranking links
How/when will we know whether comp picks are headed our way... i never really understood them.

But remember he's not going to take an OL just to take one. If let's say the best OL at 13 is Eben Britton, I seriously doubt the Redskins will take him there (as much as I like him) and if they can't trade out then they'll go with another position. |

Perhaps Peria Jerry? |
Re: Database Update: Consensus Projections, DE, OT, and LB ranking links
I'd really love to trade down and grab a few extra picks. Guys like Larry English, Ziggy Hood, Darry Beckwith, Michael Johnson, Connor Barwin and Fili Moala on defense and Eben Britton, AQ Shipley, Eric Wood, and William Beatty will all likely be available outside of the 1st round (save for maybe Britton).
This year would be a great year to have 3 second round picks, especially for a team that needs to build on the lines... |
Re: Database Update: Consensus Projections, DE, OT, and LB ranking links
I saw an interview with Jason Smith , and I tell ya the guy doesn't lack confidence. You have to like that in an o-lineman..

Re: Database Update: Consensus Projections, DE, OT, and LB ranking links
I wasn't surprised to hear both VC and JZ talk about Chad Rinehart needing to step up in 2009, but I was surprised to hear them both mention Devin Clark. I hope they're not thinking in lieu of someone like an Oher or Smith at 13 they'll think "well we have Clark"

I'm sure Clark will step up and do a fine job. Now we can draft Brandon Pettigrew at 13. You know, for those, "three tightend sets". Awesome! |

Re: Database Update: Consensus Projections, DE, OT, and LB ranking links
Kind of what I've been talking about the past couple of weeks about concerns about Andre Smith's focus
NFL.com Blogs » Blog Archive Alabama OT Smith skips combine workout «
Offensive tackle prospect Andre Smith said earlier this week he wasn’t sure whether he would work out for scouts at this week’s combine. Saturday, his decision became obvious, but in confusing fashion. Not only did Smith skip Saturday’s workouts for offensive linemen, according to an announcement inside Lucas Oil Stadium for the benefit of scouts in attendance, there even was some question as to his actual whereabouts and conflicting stories about why he was missing on Saturday morning.
|

NFL.com Blogs » Blog Archive Alabama OT Smith skips combine workout «
Wow. Get your sh*t together Andre. Millions of dollars and a career are at stake here buddy. This is a big red flag for him IMO. At one point he was being talked about as the #1 overall pick. If he can't pull it together long enough to put his best foot forward for the combine... If I were a GM, I would be pretty concerned about using a high pick on him. Plenty of guys who end up being busts work hard as hell to put up the necessary front(s) to come off as a solid draft pick. This guy can't even pretend to care. Remember he was also suspended for Bama's BCS game vs. Utah. EDIT: Apparently Mike Mayock of NFL Network agrees- Per PFT: Smith, who isn’t working out at the combine because he’s admittedly not in shape, just got ripped big-time by NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock. “I’m dropping him down on my list,” Mayock said. “You don’t show up in shape for the biggest job interview of your life. You don’t lift. You don’t run. You don’t show up. It’s the worst thing you can do. How can you not show up in shape for this?” |
Re: Database Update: Consensus Projections, DE, OT, and LB ranking links
If we don't get Mack at C there's another intriguing C out there, Juan Garcia out of the U of Washington. That guy is STRONG, he had like 30 some reps on the bench press and is a pretty decent player.
|
Re: Database Update: Consensus Projections, DE, OT, and LB ranking links
Soooo...... even if he (A. Smith) falls to us we don't want him right? That leaves three top OTs who are all very likely to be gone by 13. It's looking more and more like a prime year to trade down but 1) who will want to trade w/ us to grab someone at 13 2) how are we going to find a real starter at RT, SLB later in the draft? Not looking very promising right now IMO.

Re: Database Update: Consensus Projections, DE, OT, and LB ranking links
This kind of stuff hasn't been known to discourage VC in the past. He's much more about what players do on the field in game situations and in that sense Andre Smith has been great.
I think if he falls to us we should take him. |

He might start at Guard even

SS are you starting to think JJ or Heyer might start at RT this year? |
Re: Database Update: Consensus Projections, DE, OT, and LB ranking links
The Cowgirls have had fatasses on the line for years and they've done alright.

LOL what? Yeah having the choice between small, old and slow lineman and some great big fatties who can at least slow down d-lineman... i'll take the fatties. |
Re: Database Update: Consensus Projections, DE, OT, and LB ranking links
Take another angle... if A. Smith is available but so too is Rey M. who should we take?
Assuming we can't make any trades to get more picks then I'd probably still say Smith. Rey M. is very tempting because he can play all three LB positions (you could probably put him in at the weak-side right away and slide Rocky to MW's old spot). Still, I think that there's better opportunities to get a LB in the 3rd round than an OL. Someone like Larry English might be around then |
SS are you starting to think JJ or Heyer might start at RT this year?
Right now, Jansen is the starter. Don't know how long that will last but Zorn has said that going into the season, as of right now, JJ will be the starter. |
Re: Database Update: Consensus Projections, DE, OT, and LB ranking links
If Andre Smith is there for us to grab, we would be so stupid not to take him. Samuels will mentor him and turn him into a LEGEND!

It's definitely worth noting that Andre Smith and Samuels are both Bama alumni. It would be pretty cool to have possibly the two best tackles in Alabama history on our O-line at the same time, drafted exactly 10 years apart. Andre Smith's latest blunder here would make me wary of spending a top 5 pick on him, put I'd still take him in a second at 13. |

But GTripp's game analyses, which are invaluable IMO, basically show that two guys struggled the worst - Rabach and Thomas. These guys probably start again based on what we're hearing, and the improvement we desperately need along the o-line starts w/ them IMO. Yeah i still want a stud RT drafted and would like to see JJ compete on the interior, but Rabach and Thomas have to rebound or '09 isn't going to be much different from '08 when it comes to protecting JC. |
Re: Database Update: Consensus Projections, DE, OT, and LB ranking links
Interesting side note: Andre Smith and DeAngelo Hall have the same agent
|
Re: Database Update: Consensus Projections, DE, OT, and LB ranking links
Anyone see the USC kicker David Buheler work out? 25 Bench Press Reps and a 4.6 40! He benched more then Michael Oher and Eugene Monroe.
|
Re: Database Update: Consensus Projections, DE, OT, and LB ranking links
Andre smith is dropping his draft stock right now, if he falls to us we unquestionably have to get him, he can play guard or tackle

If he just left the combine without telling anyone, that may raise a bunch of red flags for a bunch of teams. Do the Skins see those flags or do they trade down to the late teens-early 20s in hopes that he falls even farther? |

Of course. Everyone knows that 40 times and bench press are the greatest predictors of success in the NFL :D Especially next year with the new overtime system in which you have a race in the 40 yard dash and a bench press in the middle of the field. |
Re: Database Update: Consensus Projections, DE, OT, and LB ranking links
It's been a bizarre few days for Alabama offensive tackle Andre Smith, considered by most to be a top five pick. Immediately before the second group of offensive linemen were about to start their workout, an official announcement was made stating Smith had left the combine headquarters unannounced. After a long search, Smith was found 30 minutes before the workout began. The announcement went on to say Smith and his agent were giving conflicting stories as to the reason of his disappearance. Sources later said Smith's interviews with teams have been going horribly. He's been inappropriately dressed and has been giving a number of conflicting statements as to why he was choosing not to workout at the combine. Several offensive line coaches have already suggested Smith be removed from their team's draft board and there's no doubt his draft stock is falling.
