Draft Thoughts - The Post-Haynesworth Edition
Since all of the draft threads have probably gotten wayyyy too long by now, and given the acquisitions that the team made in free agency (AH, Hall, Dock, possibly another o-lineman, etc., etc.) I wanted to start this thread to discuss what the Redskins should get with their #13 and the other three picks come April. I am sure that any ideas or opinions you had about this may have change given our acquisitions.
I, for once, am a bit unsure of what the team should go for. Some people have mention that we can afford to go after the best player available. Others have said that we now may have the luxury of drafting what we want and not what we need. Part of me wants to continue to address the offensive line, and get the best tackle available, and part of me thinks that we need to replace Marcus Washington and eventually we'll need to replace Jason Taylor. |
Re: Draft Thoughts - The Post-Haynesworth Edition
we need a linebacker..
|
Re: Draft Thoughts - The Post-Haynesworth Edition
Good thread idea Ruh.
I think we still go OT IF our scouting indicates the available prospect(s), Oher and/or A. Smith probably, can successfully become a LT, not immediately but as Samuels transitions to RT (my own prediction). If the verdict is different for who's available and Rey Maluauga is available then it's a no-brainer IMO. Rey is the hardest hitter in the draft and plays a position we're already thin at. As GTripp has said if Fletcher gets nicked up for any period of time our defense will really suffer. Bottom line is Rey could play SLB as long as London is our QB on D and then transition to the middle... anyway i just don't think we can afford to pass on him cuz he's very special and top defenses need a monster MLB. Our 2nd pick should be OL if we take LB @ 13 and vice versa... 5th round will be a tough call if Sidbury is there and a nice RB prospect is still available. Last pick... punter LOL. |
Re: Draft Thoughts - The Post-Haynesworth Edition
I honestly think that right now the plan seems to be trade down. Take the best linebacker available in which case they take Maluga if he falls down to them, James Laurinaitis, or Brian Chushing and then take one of the second tier tackles should they get a second round pick. Guys like Phil Loadholt, Jamon Meredith, and Steven Beatty come to mind. I also think it's possible that they might have a deal where their trade down looks something like this
Redskins get low to mid first round pick low to mid second round Pick trading teams fourth round pick Trade Partner gets Redskins 1st round pick Redskins 3rd round pick Sort of like how we ended up giving the Falcons our third round pick on top of our first. Anyone have ideas on possible trade partners? |
Re: Draft Thoughts - The Post-Haynesworth Edition
well, it'd be OL, DE, or LB.
I really like everything i've seen from orakpo, but there's a lot of OL talent and some LBs too. if we get a 2nd or high 3rd for golston, that and our other 3rd should be used on OL and the top pick on orakpo or cushing/rey or OT IF someone fell... or trade down if possible. |

I say trade Betts and draft a young RB along with LB, DE, C, T positions. Taylor will be gone after this year, he needs to be replaced, Evans, Daniels, Griffin also need to be replaced after this year or maybe even sooner. Need to keep young DL talent like Montgomery, Golston and Alexander. |

Cushing has one of the lowest durability ratings of the "1st round" LBs and Orakpo has missed time in his last two years with a recurring knee injury. These are guys that will take major abuse as young players in the NFL and to already have injury/durability issues is a serious concern... especially @ 13 if we don't trade down. Curry, Raji and Rey M. appear to be the safest early 1st round picks however Curry and Raji are almost guaranteed to be gone by 13. |

We are so primed to trade back and draft Mack.

Is Mack a legit 1st round pick or someone to take in the 2nd round (if we can work that kind of deal)? |

I don't think it would be surprising at all to see Mack go from #20 on. I would'nt be surprised if Pittsburgh took him at 32 if he's still there. |
Re: Draft Thoughts - The Post-Haynesworth Edition
I just haven't seen him in rd 1 of any mock drafts. Really hard to predict now though as guys will certainly rise and fall...
|
Re: Draft Thoughts - The Post-Haynesworth Edition
whatever we do I say keep building the lines with younger players, then worry about the other positions... I say take the best Olineman or D-lineman available when we pick...of course preferrably o-lineman

Yep, o-line preferably. Alex Mack is the guy I'm gunnin' for. He can certainly replace Rabach and secure that important aspect of our game, center. |

Add me to the bandwagon, I like us to trade down and get Mack and the best available LB, like a Clay Matthews. |
Re: Draft Thoughts - The Post-Haynesworth Edition
:) yeah thats it
|
Re: Draft Thoughts - The Post-Haynesworth Edition
if they dont trade down to pick up more draft picks then at #13 you take the best offensive lineman on the board.
|
Re: Draft Thoughts - The Post-Haynesworth Edition
I want Aaron Curry. Two months ago it looked like he'd be bottom half of the 1st round but now it's looking top 3. I think he is the only "can't miss" in the draft and plays a position of need.
Trade up with Detroit and take him. This year's 1st and 3rd round picks and next year's 2nd round. Detroit needs help at so many spots it would make sense for them and we'd get, IMO, a decades worth of Pro Bowls from the OLB position. Plus, after making the biggest splash in FA we'd also have the biggest splash in the draft. |

Brandon spikes of Florida I think will be a beter pro than curry, so I think we could stay/trade down from where we are ... Plus we have HB blades and Jason Taylor who can replace marcus for this year if nothing works out come draft time |

Keep in mind that mack would have to learn the schemes and how to pickup blitzs etc. Which would take a while, and seeing that we're built for this year, we can't be fooling around with a rookie center, plus I don't think he'd play that much this year anyway so it be a rinehart type pick (sitting on the sidelines all season)... Yes I know what your gonna say, that he can play guard, but we just got dock, and homas I hink will still be here next year, so we need to draft a RT not exactly a center...right now...(we also need an OLB a lot more than a center) |

The two perfect partners for the Skins are the Patriots (which will never happen) who have picks 23/47 and the Dolphins 25/44 (Redskins pick). If you add those picks then you are basically looking at enough value to move up to 13 and get a 5th back (but not the third). Basically any team in the 20's would have to give both their first and second to move up to 13, but the Skins would not have to include a 3rd. I just don't know if a team would see tremendous value in doing that. Depends on who falls to 13 I guess. |

yes lets get beef on the o line like the ravens

Most reviews of Mack have him starting as a rookie. The ideal situation would be to have him sit the first few games then start around the 5th or 6th game of the season. The middle of our defense just became VERY strong with the addition of Haynesworth. The addition of Mack would make our offense very strong up the middle as well. We could run up the middle and also have a pocket for Jason to step up into. I think there are a number of players who could fill the RT position. Having said that, I think right now our most likely pick would be Oher, Smith, or Orakpo. |

The Lions have two picks in the 1st Round, #'s 1 and 20. If there is a player available at #13 that they feel they must have, then we could trade #13 for #20, the 1st pick in Round 3 (#65), and possibly the 1st pick in Round 6. That might be a nice deal for us. |
Re: Draft Thoughts - The Post-Haynesworth Edition
I've been on record asking for line help. Now that we got AH and Dockery, I'm leaning towards a different direction with the 13 pick. If Rey is there, we should take him. He has the SOLID potential, make that likelihood, that he's going to be a special player. The team has the advantage now of being able to take a special player like Rey as opposed to what had been a more immediate need like OL.
Rey, in his own way, could turn into a Merriman type pick for us. He's a dominant player. Five years from now, look back and compare him to the other players we've considered at this spot. That's the choice. |
Re: Draft Thoughts - The Post-Haynesworth Edition
With the signings we have made thus far, I don't see us having enough money to sign a player that we would sign at 13. However, I was watching Redskins Nation last night and Vinny said that even with the signings the 13th draft picks budget has already been put aside. I really impressed on how the Skins are able to manage the cap. It looks like we were the ones 61 mil below the cap. Anyway, I would definetly go after a LB with our first pick, we definetly have a need there, with London getting up and age and the loss of Marcus. I just can't see Blades filling that position. I think the signing of Dockery bought our line a little more time. However if we do go after a lineman, I would think the Center position is the most pressing need for the team right now.

If the Elfin article is accurate and we are done in FA I think we almost have to approach the draft like we're gonna pick two legit starters at RT and OLB. To me then the key is getting a pick in the 2nd round via trade so a deal w/ the Lions makes sense... they get the 13th overall and we get their 1st and 2nd rd picks. If we have to sweeten the deal by giving them our last pick (6th round?) we ought to, again just to guarantee we get a shot at 2nd round talent. ... at 20, if all this works out, I think we would be really fortunate to get either Oher, A. Smith or Rey M. If any one of them is available it's an easy pick and then we take the other pos of need in the 2nd round. Anyway, I don't think Vinny can really take the BPA approach, which I thought was just some made-up bullshit from last year anyway. We have to get RT and OLB studs in the first 2 rounds. |

Getting a guy like Smith could add about 100 to 200 yards to our rushing total next year. |

Sorry I was just using the Falcons trade last year as a templete, but keep in mind teams have thrown the draft chart out the window and given up huge amounts of draft pick value to insure that they get their guy. Brady Quinn I think is the quintessential example. |

That is what I'm hoping for, for Sanchez. I think if he falls to 13, it might be real easy to trade that pick for good value. |
Re: Draft Thoughts - The Post-Haynesworth Edition
The D was 4th overall last year. The focus should be more on the O side because they cost the team some games last year by not producing.

i dont think we need him, but he'd probably be an upgrade over campbell in only a year or two. crabtree would REALLY help the O, but he won't be anywhere close to our pick, we have a lot in WRs already (none of his class though), etc etc. he has the same type of potential as Calvin J or randy moss though, to be prolific. too bad we can't trade our WRs from last year for him :P campbell, a good WR, and our D should be enough to win with though. |
Re: Draft Thoughts - The Post-Haynesworth Edition
Andre Smith or Brian Cushing will be the choice if we dont trade down.
I hope we do trade down and get an Alex Mack who can backup at center and guard in year one and then take over for Rabach next year. |
