What Position Would You NOT Address This Off-Season
So let's suppose we all agree that there are four positions that need to be addressed Offensive Line, Defensive End, Punter, Linebacker.
And let's suppose we only make one more free agent acquisition and don't add any draft picks. So here's my question: What's the one position you'd be willing to NOT address this off-season? Offensive Line Defensive End Punter Linebacker When I say address, I'm talking about using one of our two picks in the first three rounds or a free agent to find a new starter in 2009 (someone not currently on the roster). |
Re: What Position Would You NOT Address This Off-Season
Im gonna go with Punter, because as badly as we need a real punter, we need to fill spots at the other three positions even more so. :)
We obviously need help in all 4, and without it, we can look forward to another mediocre year. :( |
Re: What Position Would You NOT Address This Off-Season
I say Defensive End. I believe Wilson and Jackson could rotate pretty well with Big Al plugging up the middle. I think Haynesworth and Griffin will make the DEs much better. I can see 6-10 sacks from Wilson (seriously, I'm not drunk right now).
HAIL! |

Smith - that's the one FA pick up 2) per all the threads and mock drafts the stud OT's will be gone at 13, and we don't move back because you said no additional picks so we will have to get a LB(Rey) or DE(Orakpu) in the 1st to have a good draft 3) Without Taylor AND Evans, we have to fill the DE in the draft somehow. 4) that leaves OL odd man out playing with an average rightside and above average left if Samuels stays healthy. Now if we alter the rule and make a 2nd FA pickup(which is possible) and get a decent LB/DE then OT can be addressed this year as well. |
Re: What Position Would You NOT Address This Off-Season
Punter, I'd be happy with an undrafted punter at this point if he's better than Ankle-burry.
We just have to address the O-line in the draft. |
Re: What Position Would You NOT Address This Off-Season
I dont care who it is, a team should NEVER draft a punter. There are more important positions out there. And plus a lot of the good punters in the NFL didnt even play college football to begin with. They just tried out for the team. A good example is Brad Maynard with the Bears. The Redskins should now know first hand never to waste a pick on a punter.

Re: What Position Would You NOT Address This Off-Season
Not sure if I understand the question but my next FA move would be Hunter Smith- punter. My next move would be to get on the phone with Evans agent and get him back here. In the draft I would go after a OT. So I guess I'm leaving out the LB position this season
|
Re: What Position Would You NOT Address This Off-Season
With the given criteria I went with OL. I think we can be decent with a starting OL of Samuels, Dockery, Rabach, Thomas, Heyer. It's hard for anyone to pinpoint a game where Heyer killed us, not so hard with Jansen.
We need to address punter, that's been a problem for years. We need to draft either Orapko or Malaugua (I'll learn how to spell his name if we draft him) to play LB. We need to address the DE position. |

Basically, let's assume we are adding four new starters (Punter, Offensive Lineman, Linebacker, Defensive End) but we only have three opportunities to find new starters-players not currently on our roster-one more free agent acquisition, 1st round pick, 3rd round pick. So there is one spot where we'd have to say well let's just stick with what we have and worry about it next off-season. I would say Defensive End myself. The market is kinda bare now in free agency and I don't think there's anyone great in the draft. Guys like Orakpo, Maybin, Brown, even my main man Barwin, are more like 3-4 hybrids. I think Tyson Jackson would be the perfect addition to our team but 13 is too high for him and he won't be there in the 3rd round. Plus, as has been mentioned previously Haynesworth's presence should make things a bit easier for the likes of Jackson, Buzbee, Wilson. Also, we could see some situations where Haynesworth himself lines up at defensive end because of our relative depth at DT and his talents. |

Tough thread. Haynesworth would be interesting at DE |
Re: What Position Would You NOT Address This Off-Season
Safety, WR, QB, WR, RB and oh yeah...WR
I just read the original post so I am a little off base here (sorry Smoot) Did I mention that I don't want another wide-receiver? |
Re: What Position Would You NOT Address This Off-Season
DE. Resign Daniels or Evans and there ya go. A line of Carter Griffin Haynesworth Daniels/Evans is fine
|

But then you're addressing DE, because neither one of those guys is on our roster right now |
Re: What Position Would You NOT Address This Off-Season
I cant believe I'm hearing anything but Offensive line..This team fell apart last yr because they couldnt score(ie the OL couldnt hold up at the end, even Portis suffered at the end of the season..When you have a good OLine you have a good team..period
Sacks can be manufactured(ask Greg Williams) |
Re: What Position Would You NOT Address This Off-Season
I said defensive end too. I think if anything we can resign Daniels since no one is banging his door down.
I also really want to see Wilson or Jackson start for a bit maybe. Rookies aren't going to improve unless they see REAL PLAYING time, not that crap during preseason. |

Re: What Position Would You NOT Address This Off-Season
No brainer, punter. We need all the other positions as of now, unless more signing are made to restock those critical positions.

But if the point is to use what picks/signings we have available to upgrade our team the most, Punter has to be considered. Right now our only signed punter was not even considered good enough to beat out Plack during the season, and there is a proven high quality starter seemingly available in Hunter Smith. Every other position we at least have starting talent signed to cover the roster spots, and any signing/pick even if an upgrade would not be a "dramatic" upgrade (excluding the 1st round pick, since that Obviously would not be used on a punter.) Of course we could always call Joey T. and see if he would punt for free :) |

The cowboys found Paulescu after McBriar got hurt and was ok for them, he will probably be available on the cheap side instead of Hunter Smith who would cost more. |

I disagree with this. First, consider how our team is currently constructed, our draft picks and all of the free agents available. If you had to pick one player who would have the greatest impact on our season next year, the choice would be Hunter Smith. Defense is our strength. We need to start playing to our strengths instead of looking for the next big jersey seller. If we make the playoffs and win a game or two, the jerseys will sell themselves. |

I think this is a shortsighted view that, to date, has been shared by the front office. We just signed three players for 180 million and then we look for the cheapest punter and place kicker. When every game is a death match, wouldn't it make sense to have the best punter and kicker? With this team an extra 3-6 points per game by additional made field goals and improved field position would be worth it's weight in gold. |
Re: What Position Would You NOT Address This Off-Season
Maybe I'm reading the question wrong but I'm taking it to mean one position would not be addressed in the draft OR free agency. Which means you can't say punter and then say we can get a punter later in free agency. One position would not be addressed at all. Am I reading this wrong?
|
Re: What Position Would You NOT Address This Off-Season
Pockets, do you agree with SFRedskins or not? I couldn't tell from your two posts.
I think we should sign Hunter today, been calling for him for a while. He wants to be here and we need a punter. |

Nope, others just don't know how to read and comprehend. |

You're reading it right. And when I say free agency, I'm talking about the market for free agents right now. I'm not talking about an undrafted free agent that doesn't get drafted, and I'm only talking about our first two picks. I realize that a 7th rounder started at Safety for us last year, and a 5th rounder at DT but let's assume we won't find a legit starter year one in either of those rounds. |

I disagree that we should try the "wait and see" approach to finding a punter. I don't want the Cowboys (or anyone else's) second punter. I want Smith who is arguably the best punter in the league. I don't think it makes sense to spend $200 million and then try and find a punter on the cheap. |
Re: What Position Would You NOT Address This Off-Season
I would have to go with DE seeing how we now have the best DT in league playing on the 4th best defense in the league.

Why should a punter be found at low cost? and I don't think many cowboys fans would say they were ok with Paulescu after the Steelers game where special teams lost it for them. If we are going to have brutal slugfests every game(and in our division, I think that is a guarantee in atleast 6 of the games), then we ought to have a weapon that can pin back the opponent every time we have to punt. I don't think Hunter is asking for a huge deal, I honestly don't know, but any reasonable deal to lock this guy up ought to be made sooner rather than later. |

I would much rather address the other positions first, I agree that having a good P is necessary, but they can be found on the cheap, other teams do it, we just happen to have a hard time finding one whether through the draft or FA. |

Of these choices, it has to be LB.
Funny how so many people picked punter when we don't have one now. Wasn't Plack cut? I guess Randel El can start punting instead of being on the other end of the kicks. :D |

Ya know, that's probably the most discouraging thing I have heard said about the FO. I am a big supporter of them in general, but if they went out and used a draft pick, and it was a bust, the next way to get one is to find one who is a known commodity. C'est la vie. |

Not speaking on behalf of the Redskins here, but some of the concerns I've heard about Smith are his age and the fact that he's punted half his games in a dome each year throughout his career. |

I would say punter, but we I don't think we currently have one on the roster, so it's pretty mandatory that we pick one up. Given our current state at the LB position (I mean right now, today), we won't function properly on D without adding OLB help. Like CRedskins said, no Evans or Taylor leaves us in a bind at DE. Daniels will probably be back, but who knows how effective he can be given age/injuries. Chris Wilson is a small, situtaitonal pass rusher, and Rob Jackson didn't even see the field last year. If Carter and/or Daniels missed even 1 game with injury, we'd be in trouble. So I guess O-line it is. |

Hopefully we find a way to address all four positions. I'll be really annoyed if we don't draft an O-lineman. |
