Willis picks Seahawks over SKINS
Per the Redskin Insider. This doesn't break my heart.
Redskins Insider Willis Picks Seahawks Over Redskins Jason Reid checks in with this bit of news... Guard/tackle Ray Willis, the Redskins' top free agent target to play right tackle, has re-signed with the Seattle Seahawks, a league source said. Willis chose to return to Seattle instead of accepting the Redskins' free agent offer. The Redskins are now expected to pursue Arizona guard/tackle Elton Brown. |
Re: Willis picks Seahawks over SKINS
Neither guy is too exciting. But money is starting to get tight. Hope we don't miss out on Elton John...I mean Brown.

Re: Willis picks Seahawks over SKINS
How about the Insider actually coming through with some info???

I'm just shocked they had the story first.

Re: Willis picks Seahawks over SKINS
Do we know why Brown is the 2nd choice?
|
Re: Willis picks Seahawks over SKINS
You snooze, you lose. Maybe they think Heyer and Jansen can play RT, I don't see Brown as an improvement over either, the guy didn't even start.

How was Willis an improvement? Brown is actually rated a bit higher as a lineman than Willis, and played in a much better offensive line. |
Re: Willis picks Seahawks over SKINS
How is it "You snooze, you lose." We offered him a contract, he picked to go back to his team -- no huge surpirse. Skins probably made a fair offer that was his market value and he decided to stay where he's comfortable. Understandable.

I don't hear this being said about Brown. Ray Willis agrees to sign two-year deal with Seattle - ESPN |
Re: Willis picks Seahawks over SKINS
How does FO go after AH without DE's. I mean VC could'nt have asked JT about this workout BS 6 weeks ago? Then JT would have jet and we could have had AH and Canty. This really frustrates me. Last year the excuse was. Were not getting enough pressure up the middle. So our DE's are to late to the QB. This year its going to be. We have no pursuit from the outside. QB's are rolling out with no containment and AH cant get to the QB. Sorry, I was typing as I was thinking. :)

His youth and versatility, I think. And the fact that he probably commands less on the open market |

Ray Willis agrees to sign two-year deal with Seattle - ESPN
I was talking about the Scouts Inc rankings. They have Willis as a "good back up" ranking (51) and Brown (64) as an "average starter". |
Re: Willis picks Seahawks over SKINS
I wonder if Snyder is thinking of pushing all the chips to the center and going after Suggs? Yes I know he's (F) and want's to play 3-4 D But.... Suggs and AH...

If they had gotten a good offensive lineman in free agency (not Willis or Brown) I would say maybe. Otherwise, we don't have enough ammo to go after Suggs, and I hope they don't give up any future picks (is there going to be a draft in 2010?). |

If Suggs was in that 2010 draft would you draft him? I would. Why not draft him now. 2010 We can afford the best FA's in the league |

I'm trying to find somewhere online some type of database on player fouls. Suggs is a helluva player, however I think he gets into foul trouble, I know I've seen him commit one too many personal fouls, especially roughing the passer. Other than that, I would probably take him, however could he play as a DE in the 4-3? He was a DE in college, but all he has played in the pros has been the 3-4 defense. |

Looks like we need one more season to put this team together SOLID. |
Re: Willis picks Seahawks over SKINS
Thank god, he is trash and we are fortunate to not have signed him.

Re: Willis picks Seahawks over SKINS
Who care's about Willis? What has he ever done to warrant a starting RT position. He's probably on par with Heyer and we'd have to pay him more.
As far as Suggs goes, is this even possible? Is this just talk from fans kicking the can around or what? If it is true and we could possibly get him (I'd really be amazed if we did but then again, I said that about Haynesworth too and then again when Hall resigned and yet again when we scooped Dockery) we could definately run some 3-4. Haynesworth would be the undeniable force at NT with Griffin and Daniels (assuming he's resigned) playing the ends. Then we'd have Suggs and McIntosh playing OLB with Fletcher and Blades playing inside. Blades might be better suited as a special teamer but could produce at a high level given the amount of talent surrounding him. And if we were really considering Suggs, I'd imagine we'd have to give up our 1st round pick if not more (high 2010 picks most likely). I'd rather draft Maualuga if he's available if we were to continue upgrading the defense and keep our future picks. |

Re: Willis picks Seahawks over SKINS
Willis could'nt have been but so good to last this long. I doubt he's any better than Heyer.
|
Re: Willis picks Seahawks over SKINS
That's what I thought. Plus there's no way to pay him.

Exactly, It looked seemed like we might sign him, but to see him on the arket so long raised some questions. Sign Crowell, draft Smith or Oher, and find a DE in the 3rd. |

I only said it to stir the pot of ideas a little. But with that said. I don't put anything past snyder. Nor do I doubt his ability to do the impossible anymore. I wouldn't mind Suggs at this point. |
Re: Willis picks Seahawks over SKINS
I think it's become pretty clear that the Redsklins are drafting a right tackle with their first pick. If they don't like the value at #13 then they can trade back ten to fifteen spots and pick up a RT with a late first round grade and pick up another first day selection. That right tackle from Connecticut has a late first round grade. Or they can do the same thing and draft Alex Mack in the mid to late 20's. Either way they have no choice but to draft an offensive lineman. I think all this talk about taking a linebacker in the first seems more and more unlikely because the offensive line is a much bigger need. NFL linebackers grow on trees compared to quality offensive linemen.

Southern California … The Bears gave the Trojans all they could handle before USC escaped with a 24-17 victory … Mack delivered two touchdown-resulting blocks among his seven knockdowns, keeping All-American nose guard Sedrick Ellis out of the backfield all game … Ellis was upended by the Cal center on a 17-yard scoring burst up the middle by tailback Justin Forsett in the first quarter … Late in the third stanza, he bounced off a block on Ellis to flatten linebacker Brian Cushing on a 20-yard touchdown pass from QB Nate Longshore to Lavell Hawkins … Head to Head Competition-NG#49-Sedrick Ellis (6:02-305)-Five tackles (2 solos) … Offensive Impact-Mack recorded seven knockdowns and two touchdown-resulting blocks, grading 87 percent … Helped the team gain 200 yards with one touchdown on 45 carries (4.44 ypc) and generate 399 total yards on 74 snaps (5.39 yards per play). I'd like to think an OT (or OG) will be their first pick, whether at 13 or down later in the first. But I'm not convinced it will be. |
Re: Willis picks Seahawks over SKINS
Be interesting to see how Willis progresses in Seattle. What I haven't understood is how people classified him as a hum-ho prospect when at least statistically it looked like he was a best OT left on the market. For instance i keep hearing Willis and Barnes come up together. Barnes gave up 7.5 sacks last year and otherwise just performed poorly. Willis started 10 games played in all 16 and gave up just 1.5, so that's the pass protection stat, but also from the little bit i read on Seachicken boards he's a mauler too.
... anyway i tend to think now it's worth waiting till after the draft to sign any more FAs. Who knows which players teams will cut once they've got young studs to put in the line-up... |

Alex Mack, California, NFL Draft - CBSSports.com Football
Rabach is 31 and declining. A player like Mack does'nt come around very often. He would make this line so much better. He could easily anchor this line for 10 years. We're not gonna get Jason Smith. We're not gonna get Eugene Monroe and every other elite tackle has questions about him. He would improve our line better than guard Duke Robinson. If we're looking for a solid lineman who is going to help this team for a very long time and has no "issues". If we're looking for someone who will actually help us win ballgames for many, many years and not just a big name that sounds really cool that we got him.....Mack is the man. He is an outstanding football player and a hard worker. He has put Ellis and Cushing on their ass and there is no doubt in my mind that he will continue to be outstanding in the NFL. Even if we have to play Heyer at RT this year, we'd be crazy to pass on a player of this calber. We will not get another chance to get a center like this, how long do we wait to get Rabach's replacement? A year too late as usual? If the idea is to make every position on your team the best it can be.....you won't find better than Alex Mack. Not this year or next year or the year after. He is the best center prospect to come out of college in YEARS. If you really want to make your line elite, you take elite players. Mack is the man. |
Re: Willis picks Seahawks over SKINS
I think Smoot mentioned it but the Raiders didn't pick up Barnes. I honestly think that we should turn our attention to him as either depth or a potential starter on the right side in case one of the big 4 dont drop to us at 13. I'm starting to get worried we're going into the season with Jansen, Heyer, and Clark as our potential right tackles. That is scary to me

I just read this article from the SF Chronicle regarding Barnes and his unlikelihood of signing with the Raiders. The article mentions Barnes wanting to be a left tackle or at least get left tackle money. My question is...are people willing to give Barnes LT money to play RT? Re: Willis picks Seahawks over SKINS
this guy Mack is the real deal.. a tough, hard nosed guy that is versatile
with the lateral speed to get up and down the o-line. he generates a good push at the point of attack that our running game needs to get the important yards. he has good extension to hold up in pass protection, and with a little of coach Bugle's influence will eclipse Rabach quick..( while a good leader, Rabach doesn't really have the push strength Our team needs.) this guy, with Dockery, Samuels, and hopefully a matured Heyer, could easily beat up the D-lines in the conference and beyond and open gaps for the running game. |
Re: Willis picks Seahawks over SKINS
As much as i would like to draft Mack, or any of these "Elite" Lineman, but who's saying that these guys will actually be studs? I mean sure they were the best in college, but thats college, this is NFL. There have been many times where this person or this one was stated as the "Elite" of this or that, and many of them turn out to be bust. BUT dont get me wrong a lot of them do live up to there title and do become elite, or atleast good. So im divide on what we should do. We have a poorus RT situation which needs a solution, but as someone mentioned before, last year we didnt have the up the middle push for the DEs to get to the Qb, now we have the push up the middle but other than Carter, nothing at DE. Sooooooo....
Redskins pick 13?.....I have no clue |

Redskins pick 13?.....I have no clue
I think the offensive linemen that have been drafted at the top of the 1st round for the past couple of years have fared pretty well (D'Brickashaw Ferguson, Joe Thomas, the guy Miami picked up last year...can't remember his name). So I think it'd be a smart investment for the team to pick up a tackle or guard (preferably a tackle) at #13. |
Re: Willis picks Seahawks over SKINS
With two needs (impact defensive player [DE or OLB or hybrid DE/OLB], offensive lineman who can play on the right side as a rookie), that Jason Taylor trade is looking really harmless now, ain't it?

Re: Willis picks Seahawks over SKINS
As far as free agent lineman go who aren't old, Elton Brown is pretty much the only guy left on the market. Duke Preston (Center, Buffalo) is only 27, but he's been a bust to this point in his career.
After that, there's 27 year old Kwame Harris and 27 year old Rob Pettiti, but those guys are awful. After that it's all old guys. Still, better to have a bunch of old guys who can play than a bunch of old guys backed up by late round draft picks who cannot. |
