Defensive line arrangement

What do you guys think about playing some sort of combination or rotation of Golston, Montgomery and Daniels (if and when he signs) at the DE spots on running downs?
Golston, Montgomery and or Daniels would make a good rotation at DE on running downs. Carter and Wilson can play DE on 3rd down and the long distance scenarios.

WaldSkins 03-08-2009 12:20 AM

Re: Defensive line arrangement

Why would you want that? Golston and Montgomery are only good for depth.

John Denny 03-08-2009 12:26 AM

Re: Defensive line arrangement

They're stout bodies. They'll clog up the running lanes.
Hopefully, we'll draft another DT or DE (one that can actually contribute) next month. I don't want another Bobby Wilson or Shane Collins.
Carter isn't strong against the run. Who else do we have to play DE?

Re: Defensive line arrangement

It would just cause teams to pass on obvious running downs. Our team has been pretty stout against the run. There is no reason to change what already works. We just need a bit more of a pass rush and for our D to get off of the field more on 3rd down. We may have accomplished that by picking up Haynesworth, but as always I am in wait and see mode.

As far as Montgomery and Golston only being depth, I disagree. Both are solid starters, but not anchors. Both of them had good performances in a defense that ranked 4th in the league. They may not be pro bowlers, but they get the job done.

When have you seen either one of them collapse the pocket to pressure the quarterback? Yea they can stop the run but they don't do anything on passing downs.

We are seeing and saying the exact same thing, but we have a different perspective between the their value in terms of depth versus starters. I see them as starters, but not as anchors or a 1 technique. If we were to put it into terms of WR's they are both number 2's. Unfortunately, The DT position does not work that way, their position is determined by what gap they are best suited for. Neither is exceptional pass rushing or taking on the double team like a RDT or a 1 technique. They are both solid 3 technique DT's. With an anchor or a solid 1 technique DT beside them they can excell, but they have not had that luxery yet. Hopefully with the addition of Haynesworth we will see improvment in terms of productivity.

I think Montgomery has the size to play RDT, i just see him more as a backup. Golston on the other hand I always thought as a LDT. I agree that they will show mass improvement playing in the position they are best suited for(Haynesworth also will be a big part of it). I was talking in regards to the comment in switching them to DE. We can't always just plug players into positions and expect good results. We need a LDE, let's draft one instead of plugging a DT in there.

I could not agree more, but those guys you can find a little later on in the draft, usually around the 2nd to 4th round.

Re: Defensive line arrangement

I'd say if any of our DTs spends time at DE it will be Phat Al cuz he did so as a Titan, but it will be limited if that. Daniels seems to be a lock to come back and play LDE for us... Blache loves him and that's that. Personally I think Daniels can only be a rotational player w/ his age and wear and tear but I don't know how we solve that problem. Wynn is available but even if we signed both guys at vet min that's about what we would have paid Evans to start and the FO didn't want to pony up the money. Maybe we try to rotate Daniels and Buzbee (he's the only other sizable end on the roster to be a run-stuffer) but he's totally unproven.

... actually Blache could be very creative w/ our DE group. Daniels can play 1st and 2nd down - AC at RDE obviously - and then for 3rd down we could conceivably see Carter switch to LDE and Wilson come in to RDE as these are the two best speed rushers now. We'll see... Blache still has a lot to work with.

I don't think Daniels can play that many downs at a high level. We have to draft somebody, I would be happy getting somebody in the third round or even later in order to keep the first pick an OT. Also I'd expect Carter to stay at RDE because he's the more accomplished pass rusher, although I do definitely hope C Wilson continues to improve and I would like seeing him in on passing downs.

I was thinking Lorenzo Alexander at LDE. He is around 290 and has a motor that won't stop. He also got some pressure from the DT last season.

I have to disagree.
Rocky McIntosh, London Fletcher-Baker, and Chris Horton were a huge reason for us being so stout against the run. And our secondary played outstanding football last year to compensate for the lack of push our D line got. If anything their performance hindered our D, and kept us from being first in the league. Our corners and safeties played and covered so many times for 5 seconds (sometimes even when we were blitzing) and still shut down plays that it was unreal.

Golston is quality depth, and Montgomery has the gifts to be an all pro. You can see it from time to time, but he cannot or will not consistently produce. I'm not sure what his problem is, but its sad because the guy is probably one of the strongest D linemen in the league. He had his best year last year with 15 tackles and 2 sacks. I know he split time, but he needs to lose a few pounds and get his conditioning right so he can make a constant impact on D.

i guess he will be back. hopefully they arent paying him anything

Daniels is finished. This is troubling if he gets signed because he will start now that Taylor is gone.

His production wasn't too entralling before he suffered the season ending injury last year. I don't really expect him to bounce back and become a factor this year. I hope there is another solution to our DE spot.

Waiting for the obligatory "I like Orakpo" comment even though the guy isn't making it out of the top 10 and he is basically a younger Andre Carter.

Re: Defensive line arrangement

If we stay pat with the FA's that we have right now, what line position do you think will be addressed with our first pick in the draft? OT or DE?

For our sake I hope it's OT because we are coming off of a year where our defense ranked 4th in yards overall. Let them deal with deprivation because they are the most suited to handle it.

Our 13th pick overall should be OT. Our team is not that deep in depth so we don't have the luxury of being able to pick the best athlete. Our draft choice has to be narrowed down to OT.

Re: Defensive line arrangement

I wouldn't be surprised to see some cases of just that, where Haynesworth, Griffin, and Gholston/Montgomery on the line at the same time.

One of the bigger disappointments of last year was Gholston beating out Montgomery in the depth chart, after Monty had a much better year the season before. Clearly we have an issue at one DE spot. Daniels is ancient even though he's going to be paid very modestly.

I hope that C Wilson can have a big year. I'd hate for him to wander off to another team and find a niche like Evans, Clemons, and Kalu have done in the past.

Tyson Jackson would be the perfect fit at DE, if we trade down in the 20's

OT Jamon Meredith in the 2nd

We need a DE that can get some heat on the QB . If Ac goes down , we will have no pass rush . I know Al H. is an awesome talent , but you can't have 1 DT to get to the QB . Are front 4 could be championship caliber with a DE that teams have to account for, not to mention , it would take some of the pounding of constant dbl teaming of A.H. Hopefully we can also find a T .

There's nobody (available) who fits the bill. Orakpo isn't falling to us and we'd be a bit silly to take a DE w/ our first pick anyway considering our predicament at OT and OLB. Honestly I think Blache might have enough to work w/ after we re-sign Daniels. AC can go all three downs and while we want the most from his pass-rush he's strong enough to play LDE here and there. So downs where we want maximum pass rush ability Carter switches to LDE and Wilson comes in at RDE.

that's also part of the scheme unfortunately, when you play for the run you've given the blocker an advantage on a passing down and don't as quick of a burst

Re: Defensive line arrangement

Wilson has impressed when he has gotten the chance and its not even that much. He only plays about two snaps a game. But, when he does play those two snaps he does pretty well. I say throw Wilson in there. Make him a starter. Lets see if he's got it or not. Daniels can back him up and rotate in there when Wilson needs a break.

Re: Defensive line arrangement

We need a guy like Daniels to complete the "running down" package. The guy may be ancient, but he can hold his ground and keep contain. I'd put Haynesworth and Montgomery inside and Carter and Daniels on the ends. Last year Montgomery was commanding a double team most of the time (even more than Griffith). You can't double him and Haynesworth and expect to keep Carter off your QB. I'd love to see the blitzing lanes if those two guys can start dominating at the line.

I'd like to hear from Gtripp on who he would rather see next to Haynesworth, Monty or Griff based on the tape he was looking at last year.

[I]"Tyson Jackson would be the perfect fit at DE, if we trade down in the 20's

I'd have to agree with this statement...since there is alot of depth at OL, DE, & LB in the draft then trade down, pick up the best DE/LB available in the first, pick up the best available OL prospect in the 2nd and draft the best DE/LB prospect in the 3rd (which ever position wasn't picked in the first)! Putting Gholston or Monte on the edge isn't needed if we pick up a younger faster version of Daniels in the draft (Tyson Jackson) and Jamon Meredith is a sleeper in the second. The man is a beast and can compete for the right tackle spot!

We better not bank on the DE's we have now . I know we have a very good Defense , Im not sure we can slowdown the better teams without finding a DE that can get upfield and beat the opps Tackle . AC is a damn good DE , but he rarely beats the guy accross from him . We will still have one heck of a D , but we need to get lucky and find a DE in rd 3 .

Re: Defensive line arrangement

The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of bringing Daniels back as a starter. He's a good run stopping end and he can slide inside. The Titans moved Haynesworth around the line all the time. I was hoping we could get Canty to do this, but we could have Daniels on the outside on 1st and 2nd downs and then move him inside, with Haynesworth lining up at the DE on 3rd and long.

I wouldn't do this on every single 3rd and long, just sometimes. Other times I would bring in Wilson and hope that he can shed some blocks to get to the QB.

There's probably going to be a run on QBs between 17 and 20. I'd imagine that one QB (probably Stafford) will go in the top half of the round (and you couldn't pay me enough to guess who likes him enough to trade up), but with NYJ, CHI, TB, and DET picking right there, I bet Sanchez and Freeman are gone in that part of the draft.

I'm wondering what the market for Stafford will be if he slips out of the top twelve. I'm guessing it will be a divided market, which hurts the value of our pick a bit.
