Redskins may sign Daniels and Wynn?
(See Redskins News on this site.)
How pathetic is that? I wish that this damn front office would please decide if we're getting younger or putting together another "Over the Hill Gang". Whatever they decide, signing both Daniels and Wynn isn't going to help get us there. I don't mind signing Daniels as a run-stopping DE but what does the fact that our FO is considering signing both of them say about management's view of the competitiveness of our current team and the futures of our young DE's and DT's? I also don't get the point of signing Haynesworth if the FO doesn't have a plan to surround him with playmakers who can get to the QB. I just find the possibility of adding both of these players to our roster troubling because I think it would be a step backwards in the development of our team. Once again, I'm wondering if our front office has a clue, much less a plan. |
Re: Redskins may sign Daniels and Wynn?
PLEASE STOP!!! Daniels is finished, and wynn is 40!!! We must get a Pass rushing DE in the draft, it is critical if we want a GREAT D... Also what are we doing to help our Offense? It was the worst part of our team last season (Passing Game), and we have done nothing to help it WTF!!!

Haynesworth-Improves pass rush, increasing sack totals for players around him, increasing turnover opportunities Hall-Ball hawk, can catch (unlike Rogers), excellent return skills Dockery-Improves passing and running game Development of 2nd year WR-Expected to have a significant impact on improving the offense Development of Zorn and JC-2nd year in the system, foundation is already there, now it's time to see them build on it and take it to the next level. |

He played significant time on the defending Super Bowl Champions. NY would not have picked him up and played him if he was useless. So he was an important part on a good defense. As for Daniels, I don't think he is done either. I thought he played pretty well in '07 and he essentially spent all of '08 training and rehabilitating because of his ACL. I look at it this way. They easily could have had Evans and they did not want him, in fact they made no offer. So there was a reason why they wanted to let him go. I will side with Blache on anything defense related as he has earned it. It is a stop-gap measure but I would rather have these guys on the roster than hope and pray that Wilson and Buzzbee are ready to start. |
Re: Redskins may sign Daniels and Wynn?
Like it or not you can't have young studs at every position on the team. Daniels and Wynn are clearly stop gaps and they should do fine in that role.

Re: Redskins may sign Daniels and Wynn?
if I were the SKins, I would be trying to do two things
improve where possible. stop the bleeding where no other alternative existed. AND this year choose.....wisely in the draft. Next year, (at least at this point) we have a full boat of picks It seems to me......this is what they are doing |
Re: Redskins may sign Daniels and Wynn?
Umm, wasn't this "Over the hill gang" ranked 4th last year w/o a half decent DT to push the middle of the pocket?
Now just take a moment. Digest it a moment. Maybe, just maybe, we can be 1st or 2nd ranked with Haynesworth to push the pocket. Hmmm, what a thought. Of course the team needs to get younger. but until we actually have younger we can't go in to the season with nothing and hopefully they are like at vet min. especially since no one has probably been calling their agents wanting to sign them. We have: Andre Carter DE 8yrs Cornelius Griffen DT 9yrs Albert Haynesworth DT 7yrs The rest are young: Kedric Golston DT 3rys Anthony Montgomery DT 3yrs Chris Wilson DE 2yrs Alex Buzbee DE 1yr Rob Jackson DE R You have 3 vets and 5 young players. If they pick up 1 or 2 from the draft or bring in undrafted players we should be good. Haynesworth will take up alot of space and anyone around him will look good. |

and...that's exactly what the Skins are trying to fix. With Haynesworth pockets wil collapse causing the QB to have to run from sideline to sideline. If this happens Carter or whoever is on the other side will get a sack. If the opposing QB's try to step up "Sack, Haynesworth." ;) With all the facets put together hopefully it creates turn over by forcing the QB to throw the ball too soon or in a rush to avoid a sack. Other wise a sack backs them up and creates good field position for us. After their meager punt first. lol. |

Well without sacks and scoring our D still was ranked 4th because we did prevent teams from scoring and thats the main thing that any D must do. |
Re: Redskins may sign Daniels and Wynn?
If anything, the disdain KI feels about Daniels & Wynn makes sense when you consider that they didn't try to re-sign Evans. Purely from a football standpoint it doesn't make sense that either of those guys would win the job over Evans, so I'm assuming that the cap #s didn't work to have Evans back & they feel either of these guys will play cheap (can I get a Vet Min.!).
They're also possibly gambling that Jackson/Buzbee/Wilson &/or a pick in the draft will be able to earn minutes & make the team in the future as well. I like both Daniels and Wynn, but you must admit, cutting Wynn 2 yrs. ago & then bringing him back now at his age looks kinda funny. Maybe it was that sack he got on us after beating his buddy Jansen that made the staff think he's still got it? |

Re: Redskins may sign Daniels and Wynn?
If they sign Daniels and Wynn, they still have to go to camp and make the team. You are assuming a lot if you think they will both make the final cuts. A lot could happen; a young DE like Rob Jackson, Chris Wilson or Alex Buzbee or a rookie might step up and make Wynn and Daniels dispensable.
Wynn and Daniels will most likely be signed to non-guaranteed contracts, thus making them very easy to cut if the do not produce. |
Re: Redskins may sign Daniels and Wynn?
we need to put in the young guy's and give them a chance, how long do you develop players? I say it's time for them to perform or get gone...if we can't play them and sign the over the hill game, and we just have them there for the hell of it I'll take that job I'm 6'3 246..lol

You are definitely right about that: Rabach 32 Samuels 32 R. Thomas 33 Jansen 33 Griffin 33 Fletcher 34 Thrash 34 Daniels 36 Wynn 40? |

Where is this Wynn is 40 thing coming from? He's 35.
I think both are very underrated and underappreciated, but I don't think we need them both. |

I think both are very underrated and underappreciated, but I don't think we need them both.
You might be right, but with no impact free agents out there to be had and salary cap space not very tight, we might as well grab them both and let them fight it out in training camp with whatever young guys we can get our hands on. And I agree they are underappreciated, especially Daniels. I still think his strength at the point of attack goes a long way to allowing the LBs to make plays on the edge. Justin Tuck he's not, but at this point he's better than anybody currently on the roster. |
Re: Redskins may sign Daniels and Wynn?
Perhaps the pursuit of both is due to Daniel's health... Maybe once they get to camp and he shows he can hold up they would let Wynn go?
|
Re: Redskins may sign Daniels and Wynn?
OP makes it sound like "Over the Hill Gang" was bad, some of the skin's best years were during this time. Nothing wrong with having ton of older players on team, ask the patriots bout that.
|
Re: Redskins may sign Daniels and Wynn?
I'm all for stockpiling bodies on the lines, but both of these guys are 35+, and injury is a concern with Daniels. A 36 year old coming off knee reconstruction doesn't exactly give me the warm and fuzzies. If we do sign Wynn, I could see him getting cut if Wilson/Buzbee/Rob Jackson step up in OTAs/training camp.
I still think we should have made it a higher priority to bring back Demetric Evans. |

Yeah people fail to realize the older players still have much to accomplish. If healthy. Gibbs hired older players all the time because they were smarter and knew how to get the job done and wouldn't make mental mistakes. Funny how the "Over the hill gang" was actually the hogs when the Skins went to the SB's. Someone mentioned in the Elway thread that after Gibbs left so did all his linemen and that had Gibbs been able to aquire Elway he probably would have stayed and the linemen. I think it's totally wrong. Gibbs left cause he was burnt out, plus the CAP was going to be implimented. There were alot of questions about what the CAP was going to do to teams and coach's. I don't think Gibbs agreed with the CAP and felt it would hinder coach's and he didn't want to be apart of it. Having said all that.....the linemen were old. Gibbs would have had to start a new with the lines which with the CAP would have created a problem. Although my arguement may be garbage considering Norv stepped in shortly after and started making changes which kept us at the top of our division and into the playoffs a couple of time only to not get to the SB. Wow, Norv has not changed. lol. |
Re: Redskins may sign Daniels and Wynn?
Demetric Evans was a young, versatile option to plug in all over the D-line. Ya, probably should have kept him.

If his leukemia is in full remission, I'd love to have him. Isn't he under contract with Minnesota through 2009 though? |
Re: Redskins may sign Daniels and Wynn?
Yes, but there's some talk that he may be let go. He's reportedly doing really well and is ready to go. Just may not end up making the final roster in Minnesota. I don't think they'll let him go until after minicamp at least though.

The original "Over the Hill Gang" was good because we hadn't made the playoffs in a long time before they came here and we did after they came here. Daniels and Wynn were here before and we didn't make the playoffs with them. So, the more recent edition of the gang ( which now includes Jansen, Randy Thomas, et. al.) is not good because we haven't made the playoffs with them. And, yes, my definition of good is making the playoffs. So the question I would like to ask the front office is "What is your personnel plan to help this team make the playoffs"? If their plan is to start most of the same people who couldn't get it done before and then bring in a few more (Daniels, Wynn, and Dockery) who also couldn't get it done before in Washington, then why wouldn't I have reason to question their actions? Do you really think that adding one great DT will get us there? I don't. |

Wasn't he a starter before his illness? I know they signed Jared Allen, but if Udeze is really doing so well, wouldn't he at least be good enough to make their 53 man? If not, I'm not so sure I'd want him. I'd take him over Wynn though, for sure. Btw, "Andre Oher," huh? A little indecisive on which O-lineman you want today? |
Re: Redskins may sign Daniels and Wynn?
I've been reading these posts and I see some good points...however...
There is little risk in signing 2 DE's that are ex Starters ...in fact, it is pretty wise. The only question is...what do they have left. I truly believe that Daniels is still a starter in this league...he is very underrated and he is stout against the run...which worked quite well the year before he got injured... His injury essentially cost us a 2nd and 6th round pick last year...that should tell you his value to the Front office...and ya know what?....his performance was WAY better than his replacement....on top of that, he's got an amazing attitude and is great for the locker room...not to mention something to prove...I hope they sign him for 2 years...maybe 3...he's in great shape.... I see Wynn as nothing more than a veteran backup in case Daniels aint ready to go....as well as a backup if Wilson, etc, continue to be situational players only...which at this point....they still are. Either way, if Daniels is injured...we are kinda screwed for a starter and may need to go back to Taylor or others....or we go with a rookie from the draft with wynn, others by commitee. To me, the best option is to sign Daniels now..he is quite motivated and we know what he can do...if we go into the draft without signing a starter, we will be forced to draft a DE high, and you know the FO will NEVER do that. I think Daniels is a classic Redskin, a ton of heart, amazing attitude, very coachable and pretty damn good at stopping the run...sign him! |

Re: Redskins may sign Daniels and Wynn?
Might as well bring back Erasmus James, he's gotta be healthy by now.
|
Re: Redskins may sign Daniels and Wynn?
Daniels is coming off a serious injury, didn't play or practice for a year and is in his mid 30's. Sorry but I really wouldn't count on him to be as an effective run stopper that he once was....and he was never a pass rusher. We need to draft someone or have Jackson step up in the worst way possible.
I was reading NFL.com today and Kyle Vanden Boush was signed as a minumum wage free agent a few years ago by Tenn. Now he's a pro bowl player and a top NFL DE. Maybe we can find someone like him. There are players out there that can play, some just need the chance. |
Re: Redskins may sign Daniels and Wynn?
You need at least one veteran D lineman to compliment Haynesworth. Putting all rooks or guys still with water behind the ears might lessen the impact of having Haynesworth. Sign the guys to a one year deal and see what happens. Who knows, maybe the will get beat outright for the starting positions, and this will be a moot issue. Remember this is a make or break year for Zorny and probably JC. I don't think the FO wants to roll the dice with rooks.
|
Re: Redskins may sign Daniels and Wynn?
Remember defense wins championships...worry about the dline and linebackers in the draft first then Oline second
|
Re: Redskins may sign Daniels and Wynn?
I'm not surprised there's a fair bit of disagreement about Daniels/Wynn. My take is if we have the cap room it's smart to sign both i.e. as long as it doesn't preclude us from signing help at our other positions of need (OLB and OT). Daniels still brings something to the table: bad-ass run stuffer, fantastic locker room guy, experience. Last year seemed like a freak injury but obviously age is a concern, which is why we need a legit guy to rotate at the position. I believe the only guy currently on the roster who can legitimately handle LDE is Carter, not any of the young inexperienced guys. That's why we sign Wynn too. Then we draft a DE in the 3rd or 5th round... Sidbury would be intriguing. My guess is the drafted guy beats out one among the current youngsters for the final DE spot on the roster... probably Buzbee or Jackson goes because Wilson has shown some flash as a speed-rusher RDE.
... from what others have said Blache really likes Daniels, however Blache is still a professional and clearly he believes a healthy Phillip is better than Evans. I'll trust his judgment. I would also guess Blache knows we're gonna f'ing fly on defense this year, and if Zorn can make something happen on the other side of the ball it could be a special year for the Skins... so maybe he also thinks Daniels deserves to be in on this cuz the guy has given heart and soul to the franchise in good times and bad. Maybe we're seeing loyalty where it's well deserved. Or maybe i'm just being sentimental. |
Re: Redskins may sign Daniels and Wynn?
Im kool with Daniels coming back, because if he is healthy he can be a nice strong veteran run stopper at DE. He can also slide inside if needed due to injuries inside. No problems at all bringing him back BUT Wynn???????.. Please!!!.. gimme a break, nice guy and all but he brings NOTHING to the table besides perhaps knowing our defense. He is a bit too small to be effective inside and too slow to rush the passer outside! Why waste our time with him? I would MUCH rather just give the time to Jackson, Buzbee, and/or Wilson and see what they can do....rather than resign Wynn..... Id rather sign La
|
Re: Redskins may sign Daniels and Wynn?
Neither Daniels nor Wynn represent the quality which is desired. Both are serviceable at best.
But there are too many holes in the roster. RT for one. SLB for another. DE for sure. Depth almost everywhere would be good, too. Given this situation, and the fact that the team has only 4 draft picks (only 5 even in a trade-down), warm bodies of even mediocre quality are needed. Given the pickings left at RT and SLB, getting Daniels and/or Wynn, and seeing who performs in camp, is a good idea. Sadly there are too many holes and not enough draft picks to fill 'em. Gotta make the best of a grim situation. |
