Anti-Marijuana Ad Targets Video Game Players

OK, I haven't really smoked pot in a few years, mostly because I don't want to have anything in common with hippies, but I had to comment on this. The government, in a continued attempt to get the attention of today's coach potato youth, is advertising that smoking pot can impede your video game skills. Um, let me just say that this has NOT been my experience. If you want to effectively deter pot smoking, tell the truth. Say that it causes you to eat unhealthy foods like poptarts, or watch cartoons well into your twenties, or hang out with an awkward posse of hippies and fake suburban gangstas, or drive around for hours listening to trance music, or, you know, spend all your time playing video games when you could be like reading or studying. But pot is like video game steroids. It seriously makes you way better. I call ridiculous on this. |

I had a roommate at college and he use to get like, you know, the big ziplock bags of weed. The ones your mother puts a spiral sliced ham into or something and no one could beat this guy at any video game. In the very early Madden game on Sega Genesis, he would sack your QB before you even knew the ball had been snapped. On Nintendo, I never saw him lose in RBI baseball and he played half the school. And, he could finish Contra without the 30 men cheat code. |

Re: Anti-Marijuana Ad Targets Video Game Players
Stopping people from smoking pot is the biggest waste of money for our government. I mean lets look at the facts
- The gangs police go after profit highly from pot sales - It cost way to much money to incarcerate someone for smoking pot. - It's technically less harmful then alcohol and on a user basis cigarettes (meaning the fact that you smoke less in comparison to cigarettes makes it better). Still I'm with you DJNemo. Despite smoking it in the past I definitely think that it's among the stupidest drugs you can use. Of course with every other moron playing with an online handle including the words like reefer, 420, smokes, stoner, etc in their screen name it's no wonder they choose to go after video game players. Ironically though ads targeted at getting people to quit a particular substance just makes them more likely to go out and use after seeing an ad even when they're trying to quit. At least thats what market research tells us, so bravo more government money down the drain. |

I'm currently making love to Marry Jane and playing Madden 09. I'm going to watch Family guy later on while I munch on Honey Bunch cereal...good times...American Dream shit. :cool-smil

Well, since the rudiments of a legalize drugs debate are taking form - unintentionally on my part I swear - let me direct everyone to an economist editorial from this week, which I think lays out the case for legalization pretty convincingly. The war on drugs is clearly a colossal failure, the only thing it has succeeded at is wasting money and lives. |
Re: Anti-Marijuana Ad Targets Video Game Players
didn't they need a breathe test or some way for cops to get proof of DUI before they can legalize it? I think that was one of the hurdles.

kinda hard to fight a war when you're not allowed to go after the manufacturers or wholesalers... i mean, bust the kid on the street is great, but the guys pumping out the major narco product already got paid 6 links ago, so it doesn't dis-incentivize the production chain, only the local guy. |

Re: Anti-Marijuana Ad Targets Video Game Players
Marijuana will neve be legalized. The alcohol and cigarette industries don't want any competition from a substance you can grow in your back yard and the government can't tax it.
|
Re: Anti-Marijuana Ad Targets Video Game Players
I think it's more about no one wanting to stand up and be the guy to say I'm gonna push for drug legalization. Bill O'Reilly would hit the roof.

Re: Anti-Marijuana Ad Targets Video Game Players
Watch this doc then come back and we can talk about how much of a waste and fraud the war on drugs is.
American Drug War: The Last White Hope - War on Drugs Locking up non-voilent drug users is this biggest joke and waste of US tax dollars, why not help these people instead of amplifying their problem? Best line from that doc is this: Betty Ford had a drug problem (alcohol) they built a clinic for her, Robert Downey JR had a drug problem also (cocaine) they threw him in jail. Does that make sense to you? Also catch the the Cocaine Cowboys, that is a awesome doc as well. Cocaine Cowboys (2006) |

Maybe, but there's no breath test for stuff like cocaine and other hard drugs though. A field sobriety test is all a cop needs. |

Legalize it, it can then be mass produced and they can tax the hell out of it.
I agree Matty. You could grow your own tobacco but who really does? Plus most pot smokers are pretty lazy (shocker) and I could see them just walking down to the 7-11 to get a pack instead of actually taking the time to grow it. Also if you grow it inside for the casual user it is pretty expensive considering the lights and all that stuff. Plus, you would be able to control who actual gets it. I rather have a clerk sell it to people and checking IDs, instead of some slim ball on the corner who is selling to kids. Did any one see Last House on the Left? I personally don't smoke and never have ( I have never been able to inhale any smoke, I cough like crazy) but it is just so dum how much money we spend on trying to stop this drug and what we could be getting from this drug, tax dollars. There is also still all the medical benefits of it. |
Re: Anti-Marijuana Ad Targets Video Game Players
This one baffles me. I have never understood why the government doesn't legalize and regulate it. I think mredskins off-hand point of pot-smokers being lazy probably is as close to a reason as any since no group is going to lead the charge on this one. of course it could be that everyone fears the fate of the [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sHzdsFiBbFc"]spiders[/ame]. I Love that clip!!

Think what a economic boon it would be for the potato chip, and snack food industries?

Re: Anti-Marijuana Ad Targets Video Game Players
Yeah, I'd certainly invest in Frito-Lay, Krisky Kreme, and whoever makes Doritos quick if this legislation was about to pass.

Re: Anti-Marijuana Ad Targets Video Game Players
So once legalized what is a fair price for a 20 pack of ciggaweed? Can people grow it at home? Because if they can, that shit ain't getting taxed.

yo ucan grow a ton of crap on your own that is currenly taxed, the thing is people are not going to go to that kind of trouble. I am taxed on corn but you don't see me growing my own for consumption. |

I'm not sure about an adjusted price if it were legalized, but i have an idea. My buddy has a prescription and according to him, all the dispensaries sell it at about street value. Depending on strain, an eighth is around 50-70. I'm guessing since it's illegal in most places, the price is naturally driven up. Keep it around street prices when it's legal and people can still make a profit (even with taxation) since there's less links on the distribution chain. |

I am taxed on corn but you don't see me growing my own for consumption.
I thought about that, growing a few plants in your basement is more cost effective than growing your own corn, especially if we're talking about keeping prices street price high. I mean, the growth period for marijuana is shorter (~8 weeks) and amusing you're not a weedhead the consumption rate is smaller (2/3 times a week). I suspect once it is legalized prices will plummet cause every stoner will have the great idea of starting their own weed business. Of course if the government taxes it to death and prices remain as they are it'll give people more incentive to grow their own or find a friend that'll share their stash on the cheap. |

Legalize it, it can then be mass produced and they can tax the hell out of it.
Back in my youth I grew pot. It is easier than Tobacco and costs next to nothing. With a hand full of Schwag seeds I can grow about a lb to 2 lbs of high quality Mary Jane. That's without effort. With the same amount of care that I give my tomatoes and twice the amount of Canadian seed bank seeds, I can grow about 10 lbs of primo. This is all without lights. I can also grow a room full of mushrooms with about five spore prints. Trust me, you cannot tax pot. There are just too many people like me who can grow it. Tobacco takes a good soil rotation and a lot of land since it depletes all of the minerals from the earth. It also has to be dried and properly blended. I can grow pot in my ditch. Disclaimer: I do not advocate the use of illegal narcotics or the sale of them. I've not used or grown any illegal substance in many years and do not suggest that anyone manufacture controlled substances for any purpose. I've been in pleny of automobile accidents too and I wouldn't recommend them either. |

I can brew my own beer or grow my own tobacco too. |
Re: Anti-Marijuana Ad Targets Video Game Players
That is what I am saying the convenince of it being in the store. not everyone is going to try to grow the stuff.
Even simplier example. I could have made dinner last night but it was easier to order out pizza and the pizza was taxed. |

Not everyone has the time and knowledge to grow. People are lazy, they want things now and are willing to pay for convenience. |
Re: Anti-Marijuana Ad Targets Video Game Players
^ Correct, espically lazy pot smokers!
It is just like Mr. Beer you could make your own and it is fun and all but there is going to be a time when you just want or will have to get store bought(if it is brewing and you have none you will have to go to the store). |

I made some beer last weekend and it was easier than growing pot and will be ready in 1/3 of the time. Do you really think legal pot sold in stores wouldn't be a raging success?? |
Re: Anti-Marijuana Ad Targets Video Game Players
I am sure people will buy them in masses but I don't know if they'll continue to pay $50 for a few joints. I suppose all of this talk is premature, the market will decide prices.

Agreed, if it were to become legalized, then you take most of the danger out of distribution (dealers etc.) prices will drop. From that point on supply and demand will determine cost. For a while I can still see pretty steep prices (still cheaper than when it was illegal). After the craze is gone and the market selltles down I can see them being slightly more expensive than cigarettes. On the other hand they could be as expensive as Cigars too. We'll see. |
Re: Anti-Marijuana Ad Targets Video Game Players
It really doesn't matter. I'll bet my bottom dollar that it's not legalized in my lifetime.
|
Re: Anti-Marijuana Ad Targets Video Game Players
I'm going to say there's a chance it might be legalized in the next 25 years. Better than a 50/50 chance.
