If we had to part w/ one more player...

In all honesty I've been thinking about this question/thread since we saw our cap space tighten up a bit. I suppose there could be other reasons for cutting a player as well :D so all things considered, if you got to choose one player to erase from the roster who would he be?

Ladell Betts. I don't know what it is, but I hate him as a player. I cringe and curse every time I see him on the field for the past 2 years or so.

Betts had over 1,000 Yds Rushing In like 8 Games!!! He's a Solid Num2

Re: If we had to part w/ one more player...

Note that I said over the past 2 years. He's been averaging about 3 and a half yards since his break-out season.

Right now, it just feels like a severe drop-off when he's on the field. I stand by my statement.

That's actually a pretty good call. He's a less talented version of Portis and doesn't bring any different dimension to our offense. I'd much prefer our 2nd RB to be more of a change of pace style runner. Betts is definitely expendable.

Betts is a fumbling machine who makes my head hurt.

He always picks the BEST times to do it as well. i.e. Seattle game last year

Re: If we had to part w/ one more player...

I guess it would have to be a player whose cap hit would be less than what we would pay him in 2009. I mean if you're mentioning the cap, I guess it would have to meet this criteria.

Rabach.

I'm still bitter about his penalty against the chargers a few years ago.

Uh, Rabach. Then, like, Rocky.

Can we not sign DHall? You mean we paid him like a No. 1 corner? Crap.

do you mean despite cap implications?

cause right now rabach can clear 2mill and thrash can clear, like, 400k. I'm not cutting rabach without a replacement though. not unless you guys thought that whole cory raymer episode was good times.

Thrash. i don't know why, but to me, he brings nothing to the skins. and Betts would be a close second

Re: If we had to part w/ one more player...

Cartwright and/or Betts. We have picked up a Denver back and a third back that is also a kick return/special teamer through free agency. We could clear some cap room, and still have backup depth. Keep Rabach since we have no solid backup at Center per starting roster looks from last year.

Re: If we had to part w/ one more player...

Personally I like Betts, I just think he's a guy that needs more work to be effective. I think if he got 10-15 carries a game rather than 5 or less we would see better results. And a fresher Portis by year's end to boot.

Poor doesn't come close to describing his punt returning last year. If only running sideline to sideline counting towards his average. On that note id let go of ARE too.

Which brings up the question: Why haven't we signed a real kicker and a real punter?

As for who I'd cut: Thrash. That's because he really won't have a role on this team if the young WR's do anything this season and we would clear $850K in cap room by cutting him.

BTW, it is short-sighted to say we should cut Rabach. Even if we brought in another center to push Rabach, that player would have a lot to learn before he could effectively take over the position. That's why Rabach needs to stay. What we should do is draft a center this year, because there are at least five promising ones available in the 2009 draft, and that player could be groomed to take over the position down the line.

RABACH!!! He's always been mediocre and with 2 prospects available at C (Mack and Unger) we can save 2.3 mil releasing him.

I think there are at least five good prospects available at C in this draft (see my edited post above). Nevertheless, even if we take one, I think we're going to need Rabach for at least one more season until the young C is ready.

Re: If we had to part w/ one more player...

Probably Betts. Aside from the occasional first down catch he seems like more negative happens when he is out there (missed blocks, fumbles) than good.

Also, Thrash. He's a special teams stud and a all around pro, I get it, but I've watched a few of our '08 games recently and he drops so many passes he makes me miss Rod Gardner's consistency. He should never be inserted on offense ever again.

It's not a popular pick, but I don't care. London Fletcher for the age and Salary cap factor only. In no way do I believe that he cannot play the position anymore or that he is too old now. This would strictly be a youth/salary cap movement.

I like London Fletcher, but this is a business.

So... get rid of arguably our defensive MVP in the name of youth and the cap?

We're not that desperate for cap space you know.

Edit: LOL, I knew I was going to catch hell for that. I believe that Blades is a year or 2 from being able to replace him with the same type of production. Like I said I do not dislike LF. I hope that we do not get rid of him, but the question in the thread was "If we had to part w/ one more player..."

I justified my reasons and I will stick with it.

I'd probably say Jon Jansen in all honesty. Love the guy, but he's struggling just to stay upright it seems. I don't know if he has much left to give and it would (hopefully) force us to realize we need to go after an OT
