Apparently we got a nice stop gap at OLB now especially if the Chris Wilson experiment doesn't work. Hopefully this will give us more freedom on draft day.

Re: Redskins sign Robert Thomas

This guy played 2 games last year. He isnt a stop gap he is just a training camp competition guy to see how he does. Is is no more of a stop gap than any other linebacker on the squad looking to take Marcus' spot.

The Goat 04-07-2009 08:51 PM

Re: Redskins sign Robert Thomas

I don't get it...per the insider section this guy isn't even a legit backup. He's a special teams player...probably a downgrade even from Khary Campbell. And if this means we're def not re-signing Marcus it's a lousy situation.

Edit: his 68 insider rating on ESPN places him as an avg starter; however, he doesn't look to have started much. Oh well, maybe Blache can make him better. Godfrey played very well for us during his brief stint and Thomas is way younger.

He had some significant PT earlier in his career. He does have more starts than most of our LB's. Maybe he was brought in as a teamer to take KC off of teams. Who knows?

This statement is not an endorsement of his ability, but he was a 1st rounder in 2002. He was also a history major at one of America's great public universities so you know he is bringing something to the locker room :)

Taken just before Ramsey

With him, that means we have had five different first round picks from 2002 on our roster (not all simultaneously of course): Haynesworth, Duckett, Rumph, Thomas, Ramsey

I can't believe Duckett was a 1st rounder...

Well i tend to have more faith in our defensive coaches maximizing talent than a do the offensive folks. I dunno...maybe this turns out to be another diamond in the rough situation for us. Would be very sweet.

I would still like to see someone aggressive from that side of the line by way of the draft. WE have to take advantage of having Haynesworth in the middle.

He's a stud but I've read he projects more as a 3-4 DE.

At 296lbs yeah he's def 3-4 DE material. However, many around here got hot and bothered at the idea of Canty coming in to play LDE...he's right under 300 as well but Canty doesn't rush the passer like Jackson has (in college at least). I will say it'd be nice to have a young stud who acts as a wall on the left said and get collapse the pocket on pass plays...evidently Jackson excels at just mashing his opponent backward and flushing the QB out of the pocket. I guess if A. Smith, Raji, Oher and Rey were all taken and our trade-down scenarios don't really materialize Jackson is a good pick at 13. Probably a very safe pick too....

...btw a lot of mocks have Oher falling well past 13 now (with us passing on him obviously), i just find this interesting. The "experts" and analysts have evidently found their ? guy of the draft cuz I don't think there's any debate Oher has the talent, i guess it's personal stuff and work ethic at issue here. I'm still game for drafting Oher though...his story is remarkable and you'd really hope w/ Samuels, Jansen mentoring him (and hopefully Buges investing time and effort on him too) Oher would flourish in the capital.

Jarron Gilbert out of San Jose St looks like the same type of DE/DT
probably can get him in the 3rd-5th...Seems like T.Jackson in the 1st round would be way to high

I've read that Oher has issues "learning." As in, he's not the sharpest tool in the box. This is a concern I suppose, but like you mentioned we have good veteran guys on the OL. If the big 4 tackles are gone, I wouldn't object to Tyson Jackson, but I'd prefer OLB in that case.

I saw a mock draft today that had us taking Robert Ayers at 13. I think it was Kiper's latest Mock, but I forget. I stopped paying for Insider, so I have no link.

I do know that Mike Mayock from NFLN has Ayers at the #5 overall prospect in the entire draft.

Yeah, alot of people have Ayers ahead of all of the DE's. I think it doent matter, because I think we are going after Sanchez. I just have a gut feeling.

You said you'd like to see us give up this and next year's 1st rounders, and this year's 3rd plus Campbell, for Jay Cutler. I'll give you credit considering the Bears did the exact equivalent to land Cutler.

But there's no way in hell we take a QB at 13. If we did, we'd have to trade Campbell, which we already tried, and didn't have much luck. So say we take Sanchez at 13, a few major things happen:

1) We have a really awkward situation with Campbell. He'll be the starter in 2009, a contract year for him, despite having Sanchez as the clear QB of the future drooling on the sideline. If Campbell isn't the starter and gets sat in place of a rookie, things could get ugly.

2) Collins gets cut and vanishes. So we absorb his hit AND sign Sanchez to a deal worthy of a top 15 pick.

3) We're still left with glaring needs on the O-line and LB.

4) Locker room chemistry takes a big hit.

With Jackson you have a guy who fits Blache's system (its not just for cap reasons that we have Wynn and Daniels and its not an accident the DEs don't get after the passer) so it makes sense. He also has the size to kick down to the 3-technique once Blache leaves. I mean it seems to make more sense to me than taking Raji and giving us a fourth guy to play nose or Maualuga and having a Mike who we will try and play at Sam. At least Jackson would fit the system. As you suggest, though, I think OT gets priority.

I hope this is one of at least a couple more fa OLB's they bring in to compete for a job. As someone else said earlier, I also hope this isn't a signal to MW that they've moved on & won't try to sign him.

Man Raji is just too good to pass on IMO...it would mean we're overloaded w/ DT talent (ok who the hell ever thought you'd say that as a Skins fan lol). That's when Vinny has to earn his pay...work a deal to trade Kedric (maybe packaged w/ a late pick) for a 2nd rounder so we can still address DE, OL or OLB in the draft.

Seems like the ball is in MW's court right now. He reportedly does not want to sign for the vet min which is all we're offering him.

Thomas doesn't make this team any better really, because he doesn't bring anything to the table that's particularly hard to find, but he's a nice player to have around come camp battle time.

Write this down: Conner Barwin is the next Jason Taylor/Mike Vrabel. He's got speed and athleticism. He's going to excel on offense, defense, and special teams. I hope like hell he doesn't end up in New England.

I'll take Barwin, the best available defensive tackle, and give you the rest of the draft.

My point was that Raji is best suited for the nose and we already have three of those guys and only one guy who is really suited to the 3-technique. I just went and watched some highlights of Raji and (drug test implications notwithstanding) he does look pretty awesome. If he were to fall he would be a good value. The Skins would never see anything close to a 2nd for Golston, though, and I don't know where that thought comes from (I've seen it a couple of times ... is it because he got the 2nd round tender as an RFA?) Teams give up 2nds for Pro Bowlers not for part time effort guys. Maybe we could see a 6th, maybe.

Apparently Thomas can play all 3 linebacker spots. I think he's being brought in for depth. He can start in a pinch and solidly back up any of the 3.
