Eagles Acquire Jason Peters
Sources: Jason Peters of Buffalo Bills in trade deal with Philadelphia Eagles - ESPN
Multiple outlets reporting this. The cost, reportedly, the 28th overall pick, a 4th rounder, and a conditional 2010 pick. |
Re: Eagles Acquire Jason Peters
LOL Why did this have to start a new thread!!! LOL
|
Re: Eagles Acquire Jason Peters
High price tag. Surprised the Eagles went for the deal. I thought if they were going to do a trade it would be to get Boldin.
|
Re: Eagles Acquire Jason Peters
I am not so sold on Peters. I actually sorta dig this deal. I think they gave up more than he is really worth.
|
Re: Eagles Acquire Jason Peters
Great deal for the Iggles.. Shows what a smart front office does to fill their holes. So they replaced Thomas and Runyan with Andrews and Peters, nice upgrades on both ends of the O-line.
I wonder if they will try to do a 2nd and 3rd or 2nd and 2010 1st for Boldin. They could probably call Cleveland and do a 2nd and 5th for Edwards instead. That would really suck for us if they could upgrade all of their holes like that. |

I guess you could say that the Eagles were smart in acquiring an extra 1st last year by trading back with Carolina, but I think they gave up too much to get Peters and will now have to give him a massive contract. Doesn't look all that brilliant from where I sit. I would be pissed if the Skins made a move like that. Now, on the "how does this impact the Redskins" side, it does increase greatly the chances that Buffalo goes OT at #11 and increases the likelihood that none of the top four guys falls to #13. |

They were in position to do this because of their draft day trade last year to pick up the extra pick. Peters is a pro bowl tackle on the right side of 30. That's a good move for what they gave up. They also signed arguably one of the best tackles on the FA market to play the other side. They got younger, more athletic and stronger at 2 key OL positions. You could make the argument they overpaid but now they are still sitting on a 1st round pick and one less hole to fill. |
Re: Eagles Acquire Jason Peters
Good for the eagles cause he allowed 13 sacks last year, the most among starting LTs

I would bet the farm Monroe and the 2 Smith's are gone by then, so basically Buffalo can take Oher or maybe Britton as a reach. Not sure either of those guys would be immediate starters for us. I mean if Jansen really works his ass off as he's said and then comes in determined there are very few guys who will beat him...keeping him healthy for a full season is a whole nuther question. I believe we need to acquire more OL talent before the season, however it's shaping out there will be limited impact talent available in the draft for us. Still, guys like Levi Jones are likely to be availabe by the end of the month. I'd take him over Peters and it'll cost us way less (nothing in draft picks). ...we're gonna be ok so long as the FO doesn't f the puppy and waste the draft on another QB project :( |
Re: Eagles Acquire Jason Peters
Great move by Philly. I can't believe people are really surprised that a player playing on a UDFA TE contract held out. He's getting nothing pay wise, yet making the pro bowl. He had a down year last year -- but he was also upset with his club. It was a good move by the Eagles, in my opinion. Luckily we don't have a DE that can get the QB anyways, so we neutralize their new awesome LT. Take that, philly!

Still, if the Redskins had given up draft picks for a disgruntled player (Peters) and signed another player who just came out of knee surgery, some people here would be going ape sh!t. I'm fine with the Eagles not getting Boldin though. |

A 1st and a 4th rounder (plus a conditional)- Don't know if the eagles made a good move or not, but I would be upset if the redskins made this same trade (28th overall, eagles 4th rounder) for peters.

im with you and frplg on this. to me, vastly over rated. and they sure did pay a ton for him. i wonder what kind of money he wants? probably alot. |
Re: Eagles Acquire Jason Peters

They still have another first round pick (and ten picks total) in this draft, so they could still get Boldin if they want. This is a steal for the Eagles. A great LT for a very low 1st rounder 4th, and a doo-doo pick in 2010? Wow. Chances are, if they'd drafted an OT that low, he'd end up being a bust or a career backup. Why do i get the feeling if the skins wanted him, we'd have had to give up our 13th overall plus something else? Guess the Bills were desperate... or just too cheap to pay Peters. |
Re: Eagles Acquire Jason Peters
The Iggles traded the 28th pick, the one they acquired when they gave their first rounder to Carolina last year, and additional picks for Peters. Think about it. They could have kept their pick last year and used it on Jeff Otah. They would have been better off player-for-player as well as draft picks.
No, the Iggles don't have a great front office. It's just easy and acceptable to bash the Skins. |

Exactly. He already got a new multi-million contract going into last season. But it wasn't good enough because he wanted to be the highest paid player on the Bills' offensive line. That's one of the biggest reasons we got Dockery, because the Bills were trying to back into making him the highest paid. But it didn't work. |

I agree. Philly put themselves in position to over pay cause they had the extra #1 from last years draft. I like this move and Philly's FO knows what they're doing. |
Re: Eagles Acquire Jason Peters
Good! That means we didn't. Price was way too high!
Does this mean they are aware of a certain Mr. Haynesworth improving or D-Line...hence their apparent desperation to improve their O-Line? |

I think the Eagles had to make this move so good for them. However, there are factors which mitigate against such a positive take on this. One is Stacy Andrews' injury history. Another is the $10 mil. that Peters is seeking - that's a big cap hit. Another is the uncertainty about Peters - will he be the beast version of 2007 or the creaky version of 2008 or somewhere in between? |
Re: Eagles Acquire Jason Peters
The Bills' O-line sure is taking some hits this offseason.
|
Re: Eagles Acquire Jason Peters
The thing that worries me is that the Skins may now not get a shot at a decent OT in the draft...perhaps we will finally get a DE after all these years.

I think Jon Runyan is still on the free agent market. The Redskins could not afford to trade for Jason Peters cause we are still catching up from previous years of misused draft picks like .... Jason Taylor 2nd, Brandon Lloyd 3rd, TJ Ducket 3rd, Mark Brunell 2nd. We are always looking for a quick get to the Super Bowl plan instead of using the draft to upgrade the team. If we had 2 first round picks and we were under the cap maybe we could have thought about trading for Peters for a postion of need. |

That is quite possible. Depends on what the Bills want to do. An alternative way of looking at it is that Philly no longer might trade up with the Jags to take an OT. It may work out ok. |
Re: Eagles Acquire Jason Peters
Actually, I don't see anything wrong with this move. The Eagles have tons of picks to play around with and to give up only a late 1st rounder and a fourth (plus a 6th next year) isn't a lot when you're talking about adding a PRO BOWL LT.
They still have picks to fill holes (Dawkins, RB, LB, DB, and WR...still). If we had 8 picks and a decent cap situation, I'd have no problem pulling the trigger on a deal like this. Peter's is a NFL ready tackle and will most likely better than any other tackle they could draft at the 28th spot. Yeah they could've drafted Otah last year and kept this year's pick but that's hindsight. We have four measly picks, so trading two of them doesn't make sense, even for a player of Peters caliber - we have way too many holes to fill. And as far as Peters giving up 11 sacks last year, he might have trouble with the Giants and Cowboys but I'm sure he'll shut us out seeing how we have no real threat to rush the passer. As much as I hate the Eagles and their fans, I think it was a good move. |
Re: Eagles Acquire Jason Peters
Assuming that Peters continues to play at the level he has the last several seasons, this is a fine move. The contract, while large, is money well spent on such an important position. They do as good a job managing the cap as anybody so I don't agree that there is any sort of future risk of cap overload. And the cost in draftpicks is nothing they can't afford either, given the surfeit that they had going into this draft.
So while there is a legitimate risk of Peters not living up to his billing or growing complacent in wealth, these are risks that are manageable, and ultimately worth taking for the chance to secure a young truly elite LT. |
Re: Eagles Acquire Jason Peters
A rookie that can be drafted and turned into a Pro Bowler Vs. A current Pro Bowler
Seems like an easy argument, but Peters has shown how much of a headache he can be when he does not get his way. If I were the Eagles, I would have held on to that pick. What sucks for us is now we pretty much know that the Bills are going after an OT and they pick before us. Looks like we will be after a DE or OLB unless we either trade up, or get lucky. |

Thats why we only have 5 picks now. How or why would we try to trade up knowing we would need to give up more picks this year or next. This thinking has put us chasing picks every year. Lets just suck it up and keep our 13th pick or if we get a chance to aquire 2 lower 1st round picks then pull the trigger. More picks doesn't necessary mean better players if you can't evaluate talent. I do believe it does have some luck envolved with drafting the right guys especially in the 5th,6th, and 7th rounds. |
Re: Eagles Acquire Jason Peters
Oh also i heard that Philly is has 42 million in cap space. Is this true? If it is I guess it would be no issue for them to give Peters a new contract. You no we are strapped for cash after signing Haynesworth, Dock, and Hall.

Re: Eagles Acquire Jason Peters
For everyone who is screaming OL, OL, OL for our #13 pick, remember that Peters was an undrafted FA who developed. Not to say that is the norm or even frequent, but with the right player and coaching you can develop late drafted or undrafted linemen pretty much better than any other position.

Oh you mean like Heyer. I'm not giving up on Heyer just yet, he has been injured a little the last 2 years which may have cost him to get better. We need to develope since we dont Draft Lineman in the 1st or 2nd round. |
Re: Eagles Acquire Jason Peters
The Eagles can have Peters. I have doubts about his conditioning and work ethic especially when he gets his new deal. For us it wasn't worth the price or the need to trade for him.
|
Re: Eagles Acquire Jason Peters
Hrm, you guys are absolutely right about the contract. No more listening to people I know. My fault! I still don't think he's necessarily a head case, but it does add a bit more concern.

That could help us some...but then again I think you said we may be looking beyond the oline too. |
