That wasn't particularly encouraging stuff from McShay...just raises the question higher of where Orakpo fits in our system, other than replacing Andre long term. Like McShay said, this isn't a guy to rely on dropping back and covering the good TEs we see every year.

Re: Meet the Beast: Brian Orakpo

13. Washington Redskins
The pick: Brian Orakpo, DE, Texas
What he brings: Orakpo came off the board this early because he can get to the quarterback. He has excellent first-step quickness, he can redirect insider after starting outside and has better closing speed than his 4.7 40 suggests. That's not to say he can't defend the run. He has excellent upper-body strength and is tough at the point of attack. Still, he could stand to add five to 10 pounds to his frame.

How he fits: Washington must have been ecstatic that a pass-rusher of Orakpo's caliber was around at the 13th pick. He fills an immediate need with the departure of Jason Taylor combined with an aging Renaldo Wynn and Phillip Daniels. He is a nice addition to play opposite of Andre Carter and next to Cornelius Griffin and Albert Haynesworth in forming one of the better defensive lines in the NFC.

If we're relying on Orakpo to drop back and cover TEs, we've got bigger problems in the front 7.

This was a sick pick and we were lucky to land him... the dude is a straight beast upfield and we're going to see a totally changed defense with a line that can blow up things for the backers.

Watch the secondary get more INTs, too.

I suppose I am just gunshy after last years injuries:
Injury Report

2007: Suffered a right knee sprain in the season opener vs. Arkansas State (9/01), missing the next four contests vs. Texas-El Paso, Rice, Arkansas and Colorado.

2008: Left the Texas Tech game (11/01) in the third quarter with a left knee sprain, sitting out the next game vs. Baylor and only appeared for a handful of plays vs. Kansas (11/15).

2009: Could not complete the agility tests at the NFL Combine due to a hamstring strain.
I wish we had gotten an OT but the chips did not fall that way. I think the FO did a good job of maximizing value for the pick.

Re: Meet the Beast: Brian Orakpo

A+ pick...he was the one guy I really wanted but thought it was unrealistic to have him there at 13. I was getting more and more excited every time a team took another player. Make no mistake, this kid is a beast, and we got a steal. Yes, he was at 13, so how much of a steal can he be? Well, he will put up numbers worthy of a #1. Smart pick...thank you FO for not kicking the team in the nutts with a dumb trade for Sanchez! We are MUCH better off! This gives us an amazing line. I am super excited for our pass rush this year! I don't recall the last time it looked this good!

Re: Meet the Beast: Brian Orakpo

Yeah that is why I wanted Oher. THis guy is a beast, but if he has a weak knee that might come into play sooner than later. The combine stuff doesn't faze me though. Since we were smart and kept JC and didn't go for Sanchez, you would have thought we would have decided to give him some help up front. Still we addressed a glaring need of ours and I give the pick an A!!!!! Just hope that knee crap can be chalked up to "shit happens".

I do like the pick, also he said first thing he is going to do--- Buy a BIG bed. Great answer. With our DL rotation I think our D will be fierce.

Just sprains. Don't ever look too deep into "combine injuries", they are often ways to get out of doing the combine. Sprains are common, he has no structual issues, and with professional trainers, he will only get stronger.

Which KNEE are you referring to? He's sprained both.

So best starting front four in the NFL, Cater Grif, Hay, and Rak? On paper looks like it.

Also gotta love Rak's answer to what he was gonna buy with his first pick. A huge bed, nice. Also he looked generally happy to get pick by Wash.

MTK 04-25-2009 07:35 PM

Re: Meet the Beast: Brian Orakpo

I wouldn't say the best front four, but I will say it's a considerably improved front four. The best we've seen here in quite some time.

Haynesworth is going to help his progress a bunch- both on the practice field and on gameday.

We still have a 3rd rounder don't forget, and there has always been decent help left in the 3rd round for OL.

I challenge any team to put up a better front 4. This is a top notch crew now. Once the chemistry is there, we will be outstanding.

Also gets to learn behind some real pros in Daniels and Wynn, assuming they make it to the final 53.

I know the defensive line is happy. You really can't double team anyone, its almost like pick your poison.

We have a good secondary too...I LOVE the look of our D this year...we should be a top 5. If we can get the offense looking good, we will have a tough team to beat.

Even if we don't draft an OL, I'm sure there will be some good OL help on the FA market after the June cuts.

Agreed. 500 is extremely stout for a 263 lb man. Another quarter and dude's repping twice his body weight. That's not easy to do, I don't care how much you weigh...
