Grade the Redskins Draft!

Well, the picks are in. What is your grade (A+ through F-) and why?

EDIT: Since a few people are questioning what exactly it is I'm asking you to grade, consider: Based on the Redskins needs heading into Saturday, and based on the projections of the players we selected, assign a letter grade to your preliminary assessment of the Redskins 2009 draft class.

1- Brian Orakpo (DE)
3- Kevin Barnes (CB)
5- Cody Glenn (OLB)
6- Robert Henson (OLB)
7- Eddie Williams (TE/FB)
7- Marko Mitchell (WR)

I gvie it a C. LOVE Orakpo, love that we didn't go after Sanchez. Hate that we didn't upgrade the OL, and the Cody Glenn pick is a head scratcher.

Re: Grade the Redskins Draft!

I give it a C as well for pretty much all the reasons you already stated lol.

Re: Grade the Redskins Draft!

Right now, looks like a B-. The buzz about Sanchez was definitely a factor in Orakpo dropping to us. Extremely glad we stayed away from Sanchez. Maybe some post draft trades in the making, possbily Sellers or Davis. Still wanted AQ Shipley though, Steelers got him in the early 7th I believe.

Chico23231 04-26-2009 07:17 PM

Re: Grade the Redskins Draft!

C+ Orakpo could be a double digit sac guy and very happy we didnt move up for Sanchez. I just dont understand why we didnt get an offensive lineman. We needed an OT and the center position had some depth this year...the two OLB we got I have never heard of when researching the position prior to the draft, both appear to be take too high. I think the CB shows some promise. Thought we could have done better.

Re: Grade the Redskins Draft!

day 1 -- A
day 2 -- D

C- overall.

Re: Grade the Redskins Draft!

I would grade it out around an B/B+. Orakpo has to meet expectations.
I do wonder how the FO takes injuries into account when grading, because it seems like we picked alot who fell to us due to some sort of injury concern.
If one of the LB prospects is able to step in, then we would have filled two of our three needs and thats a good thing.
The late picks did leave me scratching my head a bit, but only time will tell.

B.

Love Orakpo and I really like Barnes too.

Kinda scratched my head on the LB picks, just hope they prove us wrong. They both seem like projects.

Williams sounds like he could be a legit FB/H-back type.

Mitchell seems like an intriguing prospect.

Can't really grade yet. Can't really grade last years yet.

I do like Orakpo, Barnes & Mitchell! I think Marko Mitchell could maybe make the team. It'd be sweet to see him do that and see how Thomas & Kelly react.

How are you guys beating us up so hard on 5th round picks on? I guess we should've gotten a starting OT there?

I'm thinking we're going to make a trade for a bomb right tackle...I can feel it.

Re: Grade the Redskins Draft!

6 picks, 2 to possible starters, no OT's picked at what is our biggest need. Why waste a pick on a TE coming back from knee injury and a LB that was a RB with very little experience. I grade it a D cause they could have done much better. They could have traded up for Sidbury or Duke Robinson/AQ Shipley instead of wasting picks.

My 2 cents.

They didn't even need to trade up for Duke. He, Tupou, Meredith, and Johnson were sitting there in the fifth and they took a LB?

Don't think anyone said we missed out on a starting tackle. But we passed on some solid O-line prospects.

Re: Grade the Redskins Draft!

Are we grading the players or the efforts of the FO to make us a better team?

If we are grading the players, ask again in 2-3 years. It takes time to discern a Tom Brady from a Heath Shuler.

If we are grading FO effort, I give us a B-. In the draft we simply weren't going to be able to fill all 3 holes at OT, DE, and LB. Filling two of those holes through the draft would be a good draft. If Orakpo is the real deal, we filled one hole. If one of those LB's turns out to be something like the next Horton, we filled two holes. And let's face it, by drafting 2 LB's we are increasing the chance that at least one of the LB's works out. We all know that the draft is a crap shoot and hedging your bets is not a bad way of going about things. We also may have come up with Sellers' replacement, given that Sellers is 34 years old. But, at best, Sellers' replacement is a project.

It is hard to tell if we picked the right guys to fill these holes. Glenn seems like a strange choice but then again the Chargers once took a basketball player named Antonio Gates. And I do not know why we needed another WR. I'm with those who would rather have drafted Rashad Jennings.

So, B-.

Definately a C-

No OT, OG and No Stud OLB

C - I believe Orakpo could become an perennial all-pro, in which case this drat is an A+. But the rest of the draft im not holding out much hope for. Maybe we can get win the lottery on something.

Todd Yoder was playing on the O-line last year and Stephon Heyer replaced Samuels when he was injured, that's why.

Are you trying to tell me that out of the entire draft we couldn't have gotten o-line depth, especially in the fifth? It was chock full of OTs.

Re: Grade the Redskins Draft!

D for sure we don't need a TE/FB and the LB from Nebraska that played 9 games as a linebacker and missed the last 2 because of disicpline problems. What an awful pick

Yeah, the past two drafts have been VERY deep with O-line talent, particularly tackles. In those two drafts, with a total of 16 picks, we walk away with.... Chad Rinehart. Awesome.

C+

Orakpo coule have been the best overall player in the draft. mark my words on that one... he has future savage DE all over him.

We didnt get that O-Line upgrade like we wanted... so, C-

but im sure theyll be somebody that will produce from our late round picks...

OL-In the presser Jim said the Redskins are going to "upgrade their new OLine."
DL-I personally think the D-Line is officially set.
WR-would be set if Mitchell+Devin&Kelly+Moss&EL combine to make a decent WR corp.
Secondary-SET
QB-???????????????????????????? Unless....JC pulls a rabbit out of his lip....or hat.
TE-SET
Return Specialist-Dorsey.......................Point Blank (SET)
Special Teams?????????????????????? Competition for both K and P

So we're set at return specialist b/c we have a guy who has never played a snap in the NFL?

Competition for punter? Did you sleep through the Hunter Smith signing this week?

D-
Loved the Orakpo pick, the rest is not good.
Cody Glenn (OLB) and Robert Henson (OLB) better turn out to be good because there were several good OL left when we took these guys. I am very disappointed we could not take a Duke Robinson (taken 5th rd. pick 159) or Fenuki Tupou (taken 5th round, pick 159). Both were taken right after we took LB Cody Glenn. Cody Glenn? Really?

redskingrove 04-26-2009 08:25 PM

Re: Grade the Redskins Draft!

C+ grade...Orakpo was a great twist of fortune, and depth at LB was needed but Orakpo can play LB also. O line should have been the 3rd round selection. We definitely didn't need another WR or TE right now. CB could have waited. We are set up well at that area for the year already. The front office has put all their eggs in the same basket, as for the O line, as last year. If we can't stay healthy, then we are in trouble and will have to shuffle players around which will mess up the chemistry of the Offense. We did acquire FA Williams as an O lineman but will it be enough? He can play G or T. Who will backup at C though? With many teams going to a 3-4 defense, the C will be getting beat up and we don't have an adequate backup on the depth charts. Most of my C+ grade is for the acquisition of Orakpo.

theJBexperience 04-26-2009 08:25 PM

Re: Grade the Redskins Draft!

C-

Orakpo was a solid 1st round pick. My only concern with him is durability, but I think our DL will be really tough now.

I don't like what we did on day two because I think we passed on some quality depth that was available again and again. I'm least upset about the Barnes and Mitchell picks. I like Barnes' physical play, and he looks like a guy who loves to play the game, but again, I don't like the injury history. He may be a bit gun shy too after tearing up his shoulder and ending his Terps' career on such a big hit. I like the Mitchell pick because it was late in the 7th and what can you really expect, but now, JC has a big target that he can overthrow and have no excuses. Cody Glenn is by far our worst pick. But maybe not, he might get me a good deal on tickets.

Re: Grade the Redskins Draft!

This draft is a C+ at best and that is if Orakpo is a double digit sack guy and the corner turns into a potential starter.

Dan Snyder really needs to focus on business.

I believe Brian Orakpo will be our best draft pick since Chris Cooley. (I'd say since Sean Taylor, but Cooley was drafted shortly after him. As a matter of fact, with the way Cooley keeps churning out awesome seasons, you can almost speculate that we picked potential Hall of Famers with consecutive picks).

The fact that we didn't blow our wad on Sanchez restored some faith in the FO with me. However I'd love to hear an explanation as to why we ignored the O-line.

SmootSmack 04-26-2009 08:40 PM

Re: Grade the Redskins Draft!

You gotta wonder why so many teams, not just us, passed on OL like Duke Robinson. Orakpo and Barnes are great picks. Glenn is borderline. Henson and Williams I don't get really. Mitchell could be a steal, but I hope not because more than likely it would mean that he got playing time because Kelly couldn't stay healthy.

I'll give it a C, but I'm not one to grade off-seasons based only on draft.
