Om Field: Reaction - DE Brian Orakpo
Reaction: DE Brian Orakpo
April 27, 2009 I admit it. When the NY Jets moved up to grab Franchise QB-designee Mark Sanchez with the fifth overall selection of the 2009 NFL Draft on Saturday, and the realization set in that there would be no tumultuous quarterback transition in Washington this offseason (or at least this weekend), I experienced a moment of vague disappointment. In fairness, it was probably due as much to the sense of “losing out” to another team—the competitive juices flow hard on draft day—as it was legitimate concern over the long-term best interests of the Washington Redskins (talking QB changes everything). Nonetheless, in that instant I felt a little deflated. It didn’t last long ... CLICK HERE to read more |
Re: Om Field: Reaction - DE Brian Orakpo
Glad it didn't last long...my initial reaction was that of elation that we didn't do something stupid...instead we stayed put and addressed a serious need for years to come. If Sanchez becomes a stud, then I will apologize, but when he never becomes a star in this league, I'll know I was right with my reactions.

Re: Om Field: Reaction - DE Brian Orakpo
Yeah I was thinking we'd move too, but became relieved that we didn't.

Re: Om Field: Reaction - DE Brian Orakpo
I was relieved as all hell when the Jets traded up.

Re: Om Field: Reaction - DE Brian Orakpo
I was working out and listening to the draft. From pickw 2-5 I was getting stomach aches thinking at any minute we'd consumate some damn trade. When the Jets moved in I did nice fist pump in elation.

Re: Om Field: Reaction - DE Brian Orakpo
I had a good feeling Orakpo was going to be there at 13 when we picked, and I thought we'd pick him up...until Friday night when I started hearing Sanchez looked like he was going to drop to 8th (which put us in a good spot to get him), and that if that didn't happen Rey or Cushing were our likely choices at 13. Then I just didn't know what to think.
I was frantically trying to text Matty whatever info I could get while arguing with my wife on the streets of New York about my attachment to my blackberry when she's trying to talk to me (it's the NFL Draft!) This thread is turning into a "Where Were You When You Found Out the Jets Got Sanchez?" :) |
Re: Om Field: Reaction - DE Brian Orakpo
As most of you, I was on cloud nine when the Jets moved up and saved us. I wanted a DE, but thought we would end up with Ayers, and then Orakpo landed in our laps. I loved how we had a jersey on hand with his name!
Thanks Bears, Thanks Jets. Now prove the nay-sayers wrong Jason. |

I was planted right in front of the TV, ahhhh, the single life! |

Thanks Denver! Kept Philly from getting Moreno & we got Orakpo. Glad the FO solidified the DL in a big way this off-season! |
Re: Om Field: Reaction - DE Brian Orakpo
Jets saved us from another danny vinny blunder. Thank you New York

Re: Om Field: Reaction - DE Brian Orakpo
I'm f'ing giddy about our defense this year. Hail!

Re: Om Field: Reaction - DE Brian Orakpo
I was at a 4 year olds birthday party. I had timed it just about right, i slipped into the host's home to find the tv. Where i discovered the owner of the home, and grandfather of the 4 year old watching a lifetime movie, curled up under a f'ing blanket. This guy drives a harley davidson in his free time. I was shocked, and ran to my car to listen as we drafted.

I was glad that another team took the gun away from next year's draft..
We will have a 1, 2, and 3 !!!!!!! |
Re: Om Field: Reaction - DE Brian Orakpo
Was the NFL Draft this past weekend?? You mean I missed it?

Re: Om Field: Reaction - DE Brian Orakpo
Although I truly think the Redskins were never going to trade up to get Sanchez (otherwise Florio would have been posting this everywhere on his site), I was relieved when the Jets took him.

Re: Om Field: Reaction - DE Brian Orakpo
I was pretty relieved when the Jets moved up but was anxious that Orapko wouldn't last until the Raiders picked DHB. Then I started to feel like it was going to happen. I was pumped when I saw Goodell going to the podium like 11 seconds after he made the Broncos announcement.
Great pick, perfect selection at that point. |
Re: Om Field: Reaction - DE Brian Orakpo
I was anxiously watching as #13 arrived and the Redskins were on the board and then BAM! Before I even had time for my stomach to get twisted..."The Redskins select Brian Orakpo, DE, University Of Texas!" There was some disappointment about Alex Mack, then my mind immediately went to "If this guy is as good as advertised, our defense is going to kick some serious ass this year!"

Re: Om Field: Reaction - DE Brian Orakpo
how could a Redskin's fan, regardless of what anyone thinks we should have done on draft day, be disappointed after watching that youtube vid? This guy is a BEAST and I admit to foaming at the mouth when I watched that. I have a good feeling about this guy and even if he is not as good as advertised, even a mediocre DE would excel with AH plugging up the middle and drawing double and triple teams. If he is at all good we are going to have a historic defense next season!

I'm not complaining, but if he's only mediocre, we wasted a pretty high draft choice. You can get those in the 3rd round or later. Doe's being a little disappointed that we didn't get a guy that I thought would help our o-line become a lot stronger and therefore win more games make me less of a fan? Get real dude. If Orakpo is as good as advertised, he's a great choice and our defense should be formidable to say the least. But to say that even if he's mediocre he will excel playing next to Haynesworth....looking at it that way, why even draft a DE? We already have some mediocre DE's. I'm happy now, but at the initial call I was a little disappointed that we didn't pick the guy I was hoping for. |
