Roy Williams?

Here is something that just kind of farted in my brain so I thought i would let you guys smell it.

Roy Williams is a free agent, according to ESPN and NFL.com. We don't need a safety, however we do need a LB. Now don't get your panties in a bunch, I know he is undersized at 6' and 221, but he has proven over the years that he has what it takes to stop the run. I know I know, the opposing OL will walk all over him. BUT not so fast my friends, I propose to you, the Jury, that their OL will have all they can handle with our MASSIVE DL (Haynesworth is tipping the scales at 340). This would leave Williams, who would would be a very fast LB, with amazing hands for a LB, free to get to the ball carrier. If we can throw him on the weak side, and throw Rocky on the strong side, perhaps this could be a good fit?

Of course there are a couple variables I don't know about, such as why he did NOTHING in 2008. Or if he would be able to adjust to the LB position. But that is just more stink for you to enjoy.

And check out his stats while your at it: Roy L. Williams

Alright, well maybe this brain fart has skid marks, but you can't deny the fact that this guy was an amazing run stopper for them. And at this point it looks like Rocky's injury problems have already started, leaving us with....

haha, he hits pretty good. The cowboy thing is a negative, but if he could put a couple of his former teammates out it would be worth it.

Nah, he's too small and would be playing out of position. No thanks..

He could be a nice special teamer...but not in a million years do I want him back there covering Witten or DeSean Jackson...

You all may not have noticed this, but a month ago Matty added a tremendous feature geared for the lazy ass in all of us when starting a new thread. You simply enter in the title of your thread "Roy Williams" for example and then right next to it you click on "check if already posted" and it will show you similar threads to see if the topic has already been posted. Great tool...thanks Matty!

If he isn't signed in another month or so we may have a threepeat on this subject. :nono:

Re: Roy Williams?

Williams was a good SS at the time he was drafted, because he fit the mold at that time. The division and the league was pretty much smash mouth, run the ball down the defenses throats. In fact if you look at the stats of his first few years in the league, you will see that if you combine the total receiving yards of all the TE's in the NFC East, then compare it to 2007-2008. Jason Witten and Chris Cooley each individually attained more recieving yards in one season than all the TE's in the NFC East COMBINED in Roys rookie and sophomore season.

So the East was primarily a running division, and a big gap type safety was perfect at that time. Not any more though. New rules came along that encouraged the vertical passing game, and RW's "Achilles heel" was revealed.

And yeah he can stop the run, but he was successful when he played safety close to the line. In other words, he had 3 other TRUE linebackers taking on O-linemen and shedding blocks for him to give him a tackling lane.

But this thread talks about making him a LB, and Roy is too small to handle O-linemen on his own, he cant shed those blocks on his own like what is expected of a true LB. It wold look like LaRon Landry and Brandon Jacobs in week 1 of last season.

Face it. Williams is a "gap safety" and the days of the gap safety are gone.

That's why I always referred to him as a "one trick pony".

So if the Haynesworth deal did not go through, you would have been upset with signing Canty?

I would have. The contract that Canty signed for was idiotic and we were going to pay a higher bonus if Phat Albert wasn't signed.

I'd have gone ballistic had we signed Canty period. Paying him what NY did is just asinine IMO. Canty is a decent run-stopper but a pathetic pass-rusher...something like 2 or 3 sacks a year on average.

...onto the bigger picture NY sucked it hard this off-season despite what the talking heads say. Canty won't be anything special, Boley won't have success in the NFC East cuz he's smallish and not a big hitter, and NY's 1st round pick won't contribute much and looks like a niche WR anyway. Probably still the favorite to win the division, although I think Philly is close behind, but I just don't think the G-men did anything impressive this off-season.

Canty was the only Cowboy I ever considered wanting to sign and that was because he went to college in Virginia. I feel ashamed I ever considered it now, and chalk it up to a youthful desire to experience all life had to offer. Just say no to drugs. Sometimes your braincells can play some weird tricks on you.

Dude you crack me up...but since we're having confession I'll admit to wanting Randy Moss before he went to the darkside under Darth Hoody...lol.

I thought that drafting Kellen Winslow would make more of an impact than drafting #21.
