What's Your Phobia?
 

Feeding off Frost's fear of flying, I'm wondering what other fears/phobias people here have.

I have a tremendous fear of knives (it's gotten worse over the past couple of years), like cutting knives for cooking (Chef's knives). It gets me out of cooking :)

But seriously when my wife is cutting up vegetables, such as a squash, to cook the sight of the knife makes me shiver. I generally have to leave the room.

What fears do you have?

I have a....aversion to soft stuff. Anything from teddy bears, the brown blanket under the comforter at hotels, paper towels, and certain clothes just give me a weird feeling when I touch them.

I'm also kind of scared of cock roaches, bastards are tough fast, and know how to use the corners to their advantage, and found myself terrified the two times I lived in a place where mice where running about (and I lived in nice places to). If I see them outside my place it's fine. I actually stood and looked at a field mouse I saw on campus for a good minute thinking 'oh so this is what they look like'. Of course when I laid out a trap for one in my apartment I got freaked out when it was caught.

I remember walking in at night and seeing scratch marks on the poison blocks I laid out in the kitchen. I then peaked around the corner and saw the mouse trapped on the glue trap screaming this high pitched scream that terrified me. I went to bed and had the maintenance staff at my apartment take care of it the next day. I didn't even know if it was there still and was freaked it would chew it's leg off as I read they were prone to do that. I figured since my roommates at the time were hunters they would finish it off but even they were freaked out. When I cleaned out my room at the end of the semester I leaned that the mouse had been living in the second drawer of my dresser (I hadn't used it very often making it the perfect hiding place).

Freaked out to the first time I saw a house centipede in my basement as I had never seen one before and the one I met first was fast as hell. We still have them but they don't scare me as much anymore. I actually kind of get perplexed at how their legs still twitch after you kill them.

STD's are also a huge fear for me, and when I say that I mean more then most people. I remember almost passing out in 8th grade health class. I used to be terrified of needles but now I'm one of the easiest people to get shots as well as blood drawn.


........damn maybe I'm the one that needs therapy.

The sight of a gun, loaded or not, freaks me the hell out. My buddy got a big ole shotgun he uses to hunt with, so while we were playing poker he went to get it to show it off. He's responsible and never keeps it loaded, and I fully trust him. But still, the sight of it made me very uneasy, I couldn't relax all night.

I also freak out about potential ways my kids could get hurt. My boss was telling me about when he visited Ireland, he found there were cliffs along the shore that led to a straight drop down to the rocky shore. He said there were no railings of any kind. I couldn't help it, my mind immediately imagined my family and I at the cliffs, with my little two year old daughter. I couldn't help but imagine her getting curious and walking right off the edge. I couldn't shake the image, and even now it's giving me the creeps. That's probably normal fatherhood stuff, being a protector and whatnot. But I'm constantly worried about anticipating her next move to make sure she doesn't get hurt.

I have Colt Brennan-a-phobia. I'm scared S***less of Colt Brennan taking a regular season snap :silly:

Seriously though, I don't think it's a phobia, but that 301 bridge is no fun especially with 18 wheelers barrelling down the other side. Neither is Rt. 40 from TN thru NC late at night.

Also, my wife just had an MRI and she said she was in a tube with only a few inches around her face/head. I'd have to be out (or really self-medicated) for that one. Along that line, I don't like anyone touching near my eyes.

The only phobia I really have is a fear of heights (acrophobia). If I look off of a tall balcony or out a window of a tall building, I get this weird kind of chill and spinning sensation, and my knees get totally wobbly. The strange thing is, I don't have any issue looking out the window of an airplane (even though I don't like flying, that aspect doesn't bother me), and I can ride rollercoasters with no problem. It seems to be only when it involves being in a solid structure and looking down.

The first time I can remember it manifesting itself was when I was 8 or 9 years old. My family was on vacation in Paris, and at the top of the Eiffel Tower, my dad picked me so I could see the 360 degree view of the city. It was all fenced in and totally safe, but I remember screaming for him to put me down. I was totally freaked out.

I'm with you there. I wouldn't call it a phobia, but anyone other than my girlfriend putting their hands anywhere on my face is a no no.

It's not a fear per se, but I don't like being in crowded spaces with several other people. Even at meetings, I always need to make sure I'm not sitting between two people

When we have presentations, trainings, corp meetings, I always try to sit in the back and get postioned so no one is right next to me. I don't like crowds at all, crowded restaurants, the mall on a weekend, etc. I keep telling my wife, we're moving to Wyoming.

I get baffled at how I'll think about or watch something on TV and then have someone else talk about it within 24 hours. Like yesterday I found my Friends DVD's so I decided to watch them for all times sake(I have every episode so it's 40 disc). And the one I watched featured an episode highlighting how Rachel didn't like anything near her or someone elses eye. It's like what are the chances of me picking out that disc (out of 40), featuring that episode and then have someone talking about something like this the next day?

Stuff like this usually happens to me a few times a month. And it can be anything from a nightmare to what I think about when I day dream. Someone will bring it up and I'll just be shocked at how it continues to happen. Anyway sorry for going a little off topic.

I'm with Smootsmack though, for the most part I hate crowded places. Especially bars. It usually ticks me off to when theres a bunch of empty seats and someone that isn't a cute girl chooses to sit right next to you.

Overcrowded bars SUCK. Crowds in general don't really bother me though, however I hate being on a full elevator.

I don't like being in a warm place while I'm eating. Unless it's room temperature, I have a hard time doing anything more than nibble on my food. No idea why. A strange twist to that is that I love spicy food.

Hands down...... Thunderstorms. I refuse to be outside during them ever. I love watching them... but they freak the hell out of me.

I'll be at a party, hanging out... and a summer thunderstorm will roll in and I will lock up. I'll go inside and sit down and watch the weather channel for updates. I get nervous, pale in the face, the works. Everyone always says I'm crazy... but I still think its a legit fear. What the hell is scarier than lightning (one of the hottest things in the universe) and tornadoes? Answer... Nothing.

Right now I'm imagining a bar on top of the Sears Tower during a thunder storm with a hibachi chef in the middle and tons of people everywhere. Mice and rocaches are crawling all over the place and an MRI is chasing around Sammy with a bottle of visine. Also turns out the bar has run out of booze and the dealers don't have anymore party favors. All the while theres a press conference on the TV announcing Colt Brennan as the Redskins new starting QB because JC had an accident where he fell off a cliff. In the meantime the only way to leave the bar is to catch a ride on a helicopter.

I hate tight places, which really sucks because sometimes i help my friend do hvac work under houses. I can put up with it but definitely gotta muster up the willpower before i go in the crawlspaces.

And its wierd because even though i dont consider myself a safe person with my own dealings, im very protective of others. I'm always worried someone might hurt themselves, hard to explain.

When i was in the military i lived on the 3rd floor of the barracks. I was always afraid of drinking and goin on the stairs made of cement and falling and hitting my teeth on the steps and knockin em out. dont know why that always went through my mind,hence the reason i always drank in my room.

I'm over by the window with wobbly legs and I'm ready to faint like an old lady, 70chip, already agitated over the empty pill bottle in his pocket, is cussing out the bartender for being out of his favorite single malt, SmootSmack is ready to lose it because he's stuck next to the hibachi chef and can't get away because he's boxed in by the crowd, and SlinginSammy is watching Redskins Report on the flat screen behind the bar with tears rolling down his cheek while Colt does his first interview as a starting QB with Larry Michael. Meanwhile, we can't get RobH's pasty white ass out of the handicapped stall in the men's room because the power keeps flickering due to a lightning storm and we're on the top floor of a friggin skyscraper, Schneed had a few too many and is on the roof looking for his two year old daughter even though she's safely at home tucked in bed, and Frost is busy looking for 70chip because he heard he's got the Xanax hookup and his flight is booked for first thing in morning.

And to top it off, Dirtbag missed the whole thing because he's at home watching Friends and hiding from his fuzzy teddy bear.

I used to have real bad reaction to spiders. Not so much anymore, although I usually make the big ones I encounter a deal. I tell them , "You stay over there, I'll stay over here. As soon as you start coming over here though, you're dead!" But lately, I haven't really been that concerned about them.

I was watching "Dirty Jobs" one night & he was doing some spurlunking thing where he was gathering data from the bottom of a cave. At one point, he is trying to squeeze himself into this crevice between a floor & ceiling in an area in the cave & he gets stuck. I found myself gasping for air & kinda feeling like the world was suddenly very tight. It wasn't anything serious, but it made me realize that that is probably something that would scare the absolute shit out of me.

I feel the same way. I'm always the first one to jump off the swings, regardless of what might happen to me, but then watching a kid try it scares me they are going to hurt themselves. Or anyone, for that matter. It is strange...and as you said, hard to explain.

Really interesting thread.
A few things really do me in:
- seeing knee injuries of any degree. I have never had one, but if I see any knee injury I feel sharp pains in my knees and they get pretty weak.

- I know this one is weird, but standing water, even pools, baths, etc. I always have to talk myself into them, or i will stand at the edge for a long time.

- and Hell, throughout my life, I have had several dream/nightmares each one presenting a facet of hell, some are humorous in hindsight (one in particular where I was in a never ending fall being pelted by McDonalds hamburgers in a constant barrage- strangely, I am not adverse to McDonalds, just hell)
The dream/nightmares of hell always wake me up sweating and petrified because of how detailed and kinda off the wall they are.

Heights and medical stuff for me.

Heights make me wobbly. It used to be a lot worse, but I've learned to control it to a certain extent. It's all in my head. ;)

I can't take the sight of blood or other noticeable physical injury. Like the Theismann broken leg. I just brought myself to watch it for the first time a few months ago. (I was 3 when it happened, so I didn't see it live). The sight of needles makes me very uneasy; upsets my breathing and my heartbeat. I've cut myself pretty bad in the past (not in an emo way) and every time, I end up nearly blacking out. When it happens, I stop breathing, but realize it once I'm on the verge of going down and can usually catch myself and correct it.

This is weird, but I hate stickers and band aids, mainly used ones. They make me gag like a $2 hooker. I hate that when you buy fruit there are stickers on them and I've actually sent back drinks at a bar because the bartender forgot to take the sticker off the lemon or lime slice in my drink. I just gaged typing that.
My family jokes that it's a phobia but I know it's not because I can function around stickers, so I consider it an aversion.

As for more classis phobias, I'm not a big fan of swimming out in the open ocean. If I go to the beach I'll spend half the day in the water and be fine, but I think if I fell overboard a little ways out I'd probably freak out. At the same time though, I've always wanted to go scuba diving.

I saw that epsoide and it scared the crap out of me too and I am not afraid of small spaces. I was like if he is stuck no one can help him. I guess after a few days of not eating he would lose weight and be able to free himself.

Here is another thing, why the hell is it so easy to get in to something put sometimes impossble to get out. Like sticking your hand in jar and then it is stuck, should it not fit in the first place. Man god does some f--ed up stuff to us sometimes.

This is a true story. A co-worker of mine lost his son a few years back. He died because he went hunting and followed a rabbit or racoonon or something into a hole and got stuck! Nobody know where he was and he died in the hole. OMG that is the worst death I have ever heard of. Could you imangine being in that hole for days waiting for death to take you?

Having blood drawn freaks me out. If I see it I'll instantly get dizzy and nauseas. Not a big fan of bugs either. Big bugs. And bees of any kind, I'll run like a girl when a bee buzzes around me.

Sunken ships. Being near them or even watching them on TV really weirds me out for some reason. I don't think I could ever throw on some SCUBA equipment and go exploring one of them. I don't know what it is but they just are too creepy to me.

I'm not a big fan of ladders or being in high places without some sort of railing/security. When I was 7 or 8, frisbee got stuck on the roof of a garage at the beach. 8 foot garage, told my Dad I'd go get it. As soon as I got on that roof, I froze. Dad had to come up and help me down the ladder.

Also not a big fan of fire, although I'm slowly conquering that one. In 7th grade science class, a buddy of mine was playing with a striker near the gas supply where you hook a hose up to connect to a bunsen burner. Needless to say, the gas wasn't completely turned off, and he hit the striker near the supply and a fireball flew in my direction. I lifted my binder in front of me to block it. Scorched the back of my binder pretty good. So ever since then, matches, lighters and I aren't very close buddies.

And while I'm ok with my own blood, if I see enough of someone else's blood, I get hellaqueasy. And while I'm getting blood drawn, I completely look in the other direction. Learned I can't watch my blood being drawn the hard way...almost passed out on a 5 foot 100lb phlebotomist...

I don't like being around sunken ships or in the deep ocean. I'm fine on a boat or ship but as far as getting in, F that. That's where the sharks live and the fish take a dump. I don't like closed in places either, like submarines and airplanes. The smell of recycled air makes me uneasy. These aren't real fears. I can do all of those things, I just don't like to. I probably wouldn't like being in space either.

Zombies have always creeped me out just because you can't kill them without a flame-thrower. But since their not real it's not really a big deal.

I am the same way. Everyone has to be at least an arm length plus 6 inches away from me. I do not like it when people stand right behind me in lines, sit next to me, or try to get close to me when I am talking.

On top of that I have an unhealthy fear of needles. I have seen bullet wounds and amputations, so gore does not bother me, but I cannot stand the sight of a needle going into the vein.

I also do not like people touching or going anywhere near mine or their own belly button. It irks me kind of like nails on a chalkboard.

I have an unnatural fear of the ocean. I love lakes, rivers, and anything freshwater, but honestly I've had recurring dreams of me dying in the ocean. There's nothing that has caused that, but it does.

Yikes! I would cry if I saw one of those up close. A grown man crying because of something like that...just pathetic, but it would probably happen.
