This was pretty hilarious. He was promoting his new Bruno movie, and who else to promote it to than America's Gay friendly rapper, Eminem!

uh, first off, I know jack shit about the world of rap/hip hop. that said, wouldn't something like this basically make Eminem look like a punkass to that crowd? I mean, if I'm a hard core rapper and some dipshit puts his brown eye on the tip of my ****ing nose, i would think security is gonna have to haul me off of him. Don't really see the motivation from eminem's point of view to do something like that. To me, it's funnier if he didn't know a thing about it.

I tend to agree it was staged. I'm not sure the motivation from Eminem's standpoint other than maybe he is working on an album and maybe an upcoming release. Let's face it, he's not exactly in the news at all, and we've all heard the old saying "any publicity is good publicity". We'll just have to wait and see.

ps- if Eminem was REALLY that upset, he would of punched that guy in the nutt sack. That's an EXTREMELY docile rapper if you ask me. How many real rappers would allow a nutt sack in their face like that if it wasn't staged?

My thoughts too. Especially his crew; why wouldn't they kick his ass? I doubt someone can control their anger in that kinda situation, especially in the homophobic world of hip-hop and Eminem.

Eh, I'm still not convinced... it's either spin control by either MTV or Em's camp (blowback from reaction). The dude's built a reputation in a genre of music that isn't exactly gay-friendly and it would really surprise me if he consented to this particular stunt to push his album. I don't think he's so irrelevant that he'd need to risk a lasting image of some dude's junk all in his face (in a psuedo-69 position) to sell records. Everyone was in on it, except for Em. False leaks to the Hollywood press are often used for damage control and this doesn't add up.

It was a total fake. Why would Eminem have a live mic on him throughout the incident if it wasn't staged? Also, you mentioned some of Eminem's anti-gay disposition... Is the character "Bruno" pro-homosexuality? I actually think Bruno is probably offensive to the gay community. He's way over the top with the character and works off of a lot of stereotypes. So if anything, Eminem was probably all about something poking fun at homosexuals.

But I probably wouldn't read that far into it. IMO it was just two people who are very popoular right now doing a stunt to have some fun.

I don't think Cohen is trying to be pro-gay or anti-gay. His character is definitely offensive to the gay community but I think he is trying to make a point of how stupid the people are he interviews. I recommend you guys watch some of the Ali G show and check out the skits. Some of them Bruno interviews people from the fashion industry(more people like him, really flamboyant, etc.) and other times he goes to places like Alabama and almost gets killed. It's funny because one time he is at a gun show interviewing a dude talking about rights, and the right to choose to bear arms, and the guy pretty much says gays don't have that right, lol.

I think I've seen just about every episode of Ali G. I think it's hilarious. That guy at the gun show was about ready to knock him out.

I agree that he's not trying to be pro or anti gay, I was just speaking about Eminem's participation in a skit with a guy who is obviously offensive to the gay community. itvnetop was arguing that Em wouldn't willingly do that because of his homophobe reputation.
itvnetop was arguing that Em wouldn't willingly do that because of his homophobe reputation.
It's not so much of a reputation- I said it's a rep built within a culture that is traditionally homophobic. His first few albums had derogatory terms for gay people all over the place, but I doubt he's running any kind of anti-gay movement... aside from the Elton John performance, he actually considers him a friend he's turned to during his depression. The dude slams everyone on his albums.

His original fanbase includes listeners of Snoop, Dre, etc... now that he's ingrained in mainstream pop culture with little suburban girls hanging his posters on walls, I'm not surprised I'm hearing "Eminem rehearsed the skit." His career doesn't need any more negative publicity when it's obvious homosexuality is prevalent in pop culture... At the same time, I find it hard to believe he would proactively go out of his way to wear some dudes legs as earmuffs for any reason.

Again, you guys can take the words of MTV writers (Andy Samberg's, anyone?) and blogs... but I've lived in LA for a very long time. And these sources are more about PR than anything. Of course I could be wrong, but it makes for good discussion.

Em is the only one not speaking about it

I never said the stunt wasn't fake- I said it was staged, but I feel everyone except Em was in on it. And if anyone is wondering how SBC dare do this to an unsuspecting victim, it was mentioned above that this is Cohen's shtick. He makes people feel uncomfortable... specifically those who he thinks would feel awkward around some group or culture. While Eminem probably isn't homophobic, he's probably the last person to laugh something like this off... If he eventually comes out and says that he was in on it himself, I think he was instructed to by his management ("hey, this proves Eminem is not only a friend to gay people... he's a great actor. Let's cast him!"). There's a reason why he didn't confess it within a day- it's because he wasn't in on it and he's trying to figure out how he's going to play this.

Like I said previously, I think he's totally spinning it (damage control)... case is closed for people that want to believe him. All signs point to him tripping over himself in front of a bunch of people and saying "I meant to do that"... as opposed to risking alienation in the rap game as an unsuspecting victim who got tea-bagged. The dude sold over 600K copies of the latest album the week before this stunt, so it's hard to believe he would give other emcees battle fodder willingly to sell more records (when it's obvious he didn't need to). Now his competitors still have material with which to clown him... but hey, at least "he can take a joke".

There's also a pretty strong rumor floating around that Em actually did agree to a stunt with SBC beforehand- but it was suppose to be some sort of confrontation... SBC and MTV switched it up last minute to make Em the "butt" of the joke.

This is Hollywood- don't believe everything you read (much less what someone says to protect themselves).

I dont know man. The more I think about it Em's crew would have kicked Cohen ass. And he slowly feel with anus over face, I am sure Em would have gotten up if it wasn't staged.

Furthermore it would be a terrible way for Cohen, who is just making it big in hollywood, to burn bridges like that (tricking Em).

Just knowing Cohen's style, I am almost certain he doesn't care about burning bridges... his movies make a grip of money regardless and he's got a built-in audience that will keep him comfortable for a very long time. In fact, his humor is all about burning bridges, so to speak.

As for this situation, I read this quote on another board:

"When the time you wait to back up a story takes the same amount of time it would take to re-create that story, BS meters start to go off."

Logically, this entire sequence fits with a hidden truth. I'd say over half of the people I've conversed with (here in LA) totally don't believe Eminem's latest admission (including most of the people in the industry).

I have seen pretty much everything ever put out by Cohen and I agree with that statement but the strong majority of those he burns bridges with are not huge named movie/music celebs, but mainly random people and politicians, etc.

And he has slowly changed his tactics as he has entered the movie industry. First the Ali G Movie, Borat(Pamela thing was setup) and now Bruno. He doesn't target big name guys rather random joes and c to d listers(fashion guys, etc.).

djnemo65 06-05-2009 03:20 AM

Re: Sasha Baron Cohen(Ali G/Borat/Bruno) shows Eminem too much

ivnetop, while you are perhaps correct that there would be a theoretical motivation for Eminem to "spin" this had it not been planned, the problem is that that means there is a litany of other people lying on Em's behalf who have absolutely no reason to do so. Why would people with no connection to Eminem cover for him? It makes no sense at all. Moreover, if Cohen cared so little about Em as to orchestrate this without his permission in the first place, why wouldn't he come out now and say, "no way, he wasn't in on it at all." That would make this the biggest celebrity controversy of the year, right in time for his new movie.

And we are talking about a guy who raps about getting ass raped by his stepdad on his new album and dresses up as a woman in the first video. I don't think he's worried about other rappers making gay jokes.

Your theory was not implausible initially but I think it's time to let it go.
